[Q] help with flashing - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

ok, so this is my first time flashing, i used odin to flash the kernel dr. honk posted here [Kernel][GB] Stock Kernel + CWM + Voodoo EXT4 Lagfix, it flashed fine, but when it rebooted it says, everytime it tries to startup "convert data partition, not enough space on sd card, convert system partition, not enough space on sd card"
am i screwed? is my phone bricked? is there anything i can do to recover it or to fix the problem so it can continue loading the kernel?

Go back to cmw go to advanced and create a new partition with 1028 for space. Restart phone and see if linda converts it. If she said not enough space do the same thing but with a 2048 size partition

No offense, why would you every tell anyone who has no idea, to reparation their sd.It wipes data.
Answer to question
If your phone boots up saying "GALAXY S 4G" you aren't bricked. Also, If you wait long enough, the phone would turn on. Anyway, turn your phone off by pulling out the battery. First, press volume up and down together. Hold it. Then hit the power button for 4 seconds. Release the power button. After some time, you will be in recovery mode. (red with writing). Using the volume up and down buttons, navigate to the section that says voodoo lag fix. Press power button to click. Then disable voodoo lag fix by clicking disable and disable system lag fix by clicking disable. Now navigate to the "go back" button, and go back. click reboot system and it will work.

Also, Don't flash the kernel unless you are running KH2, audiophile FTW or valhalla, If you don't know how to flash these, don't flash kernels.

It didnt wipe my data when i made a partition but make a backup incase. Thats if you want ext4.

It didn't wipe my data either. It may wipe it if you don't have space for the partition. OP, pm me if you are still stuck

helpp?
So i tried this also and it also said "Not enough space on SD card" so i then tried to disable Voodoo Lagfix but when ever i try rebooting, linda do doesnt speak anymore and my phone stays at the "Tmobile Sidekick 4G" and it keeps vibrating. Is that it? am i bricked?

theres a guide for this somewhere in the threads
edit: here you go....took about 5 min of searching, let me know if helps

next time please this isnt cha cha, try searching

im also having a same problem on T959V. Linda says "not enough space on partition, convert system partition time estimate 2 minutes." Please let me know if you have found any fix for this.
Thanks.

connect your sd card onto your computer and move every single file onto there. Delete all the files on the sd card, then put the sd card back into your phone, boot the phone up and let it do its thing. After your phone is fully loaded, you can move all the files back to your sd card.
If you don't have an sd card... Well... Get one.

cwm cant mount /system and /data

Hey guys I need your help
I've been using cm7 for a couple of weeks now. I havnt had problems until today.
I flashed build 32 over and for some reason it wasn't booting up. It was on the splash screen for a while (it usually does that and when I take battery out and restart it boots) so then I took the battery out. Next thing I know is that my phone is stuck on the mytouch screen... I went to recovery and when it booted into cwm 3. I got a error saying it couldn't open system/recovery/log or something like that... it still went to cwm and I checked the mounts and it said /system and /data wasn't mounted. I clicked it to mount and it gave me an error saying it couldn't ... therefore it wouldn't let me install cm7 or do a wipe... is there anything I can do to fix this? It seems to be that the nand. Is corrupted or something...
I think, based on your description, that pulling the battery at the particular instant caused the secondary problem.
A "factory reset" reformats /data and /cache. But not /system. You can do that manually from the mounts and storage menu, then either restore a nandroid backup or install cm7 and gapps.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #33
Hmm I font think its just two directories... I think my whole internal storage is messed up. I tried using the reformat option from cwm but no luck
Time to discover what you might be able to accomplish with Fastboot and a USB cable.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #33
I think a lot of people are having problems with clockwork 3 in the nexus forums, and more specifically with it screwing up partitions. I was luck just to lose my ext position on my sd...
Reformat and reflash seems to be the easiest fix...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
i dont know how to repartition the phone storage :/
i tried doing it off cwm and it wouldn't let me... is there anyway to do this through adb? i think adb is working...
Reformat the whole card, and then try to repartition. This will write your data, so back up first...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
how do i do that? o_o through cwm? i tried formating everything including system data cache... and i dont know how to repartition through cwm. cwm is the only thing i can get to right now :/
Sorry, looks like the only option in clockwork is to partition. Can you not do it from your pc?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
yeah it gives me error when i try to do :
fastboot erase system -w :/ is there anything else?
guys... ((((( am i totally effed up? i couldn't find anything i could do.. no matter what i did, the /system and /data would NOT mount... so i cant format it
I have never tried this, but you might consider it.
In this thread is a method to return your phone to stock -- it uses the bootloader's ability to repartition and reformat everything somewhat automatically, using a file called PD15IMG.ZIP from the SD card's root folder.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11011692&highlight=pd15img.zip#post11011692
There's a link in the thread to the .zip file -- look to post signatures. Put the file on an SD card (with another phone, or camera, or Micro-SD to SD adapter, etc.) and boot into the bootloader with that file on the SD card.
I do not know if you can rename the .zip it to update.zip and force it to flash with Fastboot's update command, because the PD15IMG.ZIP is a specific thing this phone's bootloader looks for. As stated, I have never tried this, and do not recommend this. It might work, or, it might cause more damage. Putting the file on an SD card without Fastboot will be safer.
You could try to boot your phone into fastboot,
and then type
fastboot erase -w system
Your phone wont boot after that, but you should be able to flash a new rom from clockwork.
ive tried both the pd15img.zip method. it says "partition update fail"
and i also tried the "fastboot erase system -w" and it did not work.. it says that it can't be done. i also tried to format /system through adb and cwm, and both says it can't because it must be mounted before
From your description, it seems to me that the internal flash memory has a damaged partition table -- easy enough to repair if this were a hard drive you could remove and take to a linux system somewhere. But it's a phone, and a bit of flash memory that can't be removed.
Flashboot has an "erase <partition>" command. I don't know what it does, since it's not well documented. Does it reformat an existing partition? Or does it remove the partition from the partition table? There is no commensurate "create <partition>" command, so perhaps it recreates an empty partition. But I tend to doubt it.
I would think such work might be done from an engineering bootloader or engineering recovery system -- one available to HTC service technicians, for example.
Since you're not getting a great deal of help in the MT4G subforum, you might post your question in the top level Questions and Answers forum.
Sorry I'm not much help with this.
One last thought. The bootloader itself has a Factory Reset. That might do it. Might not. But like chicken soup, it probably couldn't hurt. Boot into the bootloader (volume down while powering up), select BOOTLOADER with the volume control and then the power button, then select FACTORY RESET. Perhaps it will do something positive.
eh.. i couldnt do anything. i tried all options. its like impossible to reformat or repartition the drive..
i actually called up insurance and they'll be sending me a new mytouch 4g..
we have just told them that it doesnt go past the mytouch screen.. would they figure out that it is rooted? i mean.. choosing recovery from the bootloader menu takes it right into cwm lol
Just flash the stock recovery back via fastboot...

Is "Settings > Applications > Unknown sources" checked? If not, that's probably your problem.
If anything, you could always just Odin KC1 instead. As what everyone has been saying, KD1 has a faulty system partition.
As for the 8GB sd card, Samsung decided to cheap out on the newer phones. All of them come shipped with 8GB sd cards now.
I would recommend odining kc1 for a fresh start plus you will have root. Then grab cwm final by krylon 360. Once you have all that up and running make a backup of the 8gb sdcard on your pc and format it inside the phone ,replace all the files you want plus the update.zip. reboot into recovery and see if you can adjust the mounts. If so now try flashing a rom. Most roms need the ext4 converter to install properly should it require this it should be stated in the op of the rom you intend to install if not read through the post a little to see if anyone else has had similar issues or had to use the ext4 converter. Hope this helps and you get things going for you girls phone.
Edit: also do not use rom manager as it is not for our phone yet.

What do you mean it won't work? did you make sure to press the mount r/w button before pasting the file? If there is an extension in the filename, remove it. And you don't install the update.zip, you just place it in the root of your sd and leave it there.

Is your recovery file named "recovery.bin"? If it is, you have to rename it to just "recovery". It won't overwrite properly if you don't do it that way. Maybe you should try using another root explorer. I use Super Manager and it works perfectly. Be sure to enable root function and r/w mode though.
What do you mean that you tried to reinstall via update.zip?
EDIT: Seems like jager555 beat me to it.
Also, you could redownload the recovery file and update.zip. Who knows, something might've happened during the download process and messed it up.

thanks for all the tips, while using root explorer it was in r/w mode and the update.zip i use so CWM works, on my phone sometimes it will go into the stock recovery (blue in color) i got to the second option reinstall pakages and it will do a quick flash and boot into CWM recovery (yellowish in color) im now running CWM red on my phone so its not an issue but cannot seem to get it to work on the GF phone, i have tried everything i can think of and followed all the tips here and still cannot get it to work
leave your sd card and sim card out of the phone and odin to kc1. when it is complete, let the phone sit for 10-15 minutes. put the sd card in and then redownload krylons cwm final and move the two files to the right locations, making sure they are named properly and you OVERWRITE the files that are already there. once it is done, power off the phone, remove your sd card and do a full format. when this is done, put back the update.zip on the root of the sd card, put on the ext4 converter, as well as icbinb. these are the only 3 files you will need right now. start up the phone by pressing the 3 button combo and go into the orange cwm final. wipe cache and factory reset. check mounts, flash ext4 converter and then flash the rom and reboot. im not sure why your cache is the problem. you can try to odin to kb5 and see if that gives you different results. but if that doesnt work, i dont know what to tell you.

[Q] Flashing Rom can't find sd card in recovery.

First off, I have never had a rom for this phone that works well for a long period of time. Every single one slows down eventually and will get random shut downs and other problems. This time, I decided to reflash it to a fresh start and put Valhalla Black edition on it. And I mean completely fresh. I backed up my few files, formatted the sd card, factory reset the phone, and flashed stock KD1 in Odin. Up until this point, everything had been going perfectly fine and the ROM installed just fine. At this point, I put Valhalla onto the sd card to flash and boot up into CWM. This is where I am lost. First, I go straight to "install zip from sd card" and almost get ready to install, but then remember to double check my mounts. Mounts good, but as soon as I select "install from sd card again", I get the error that the sd card can not be mounted. I restarted the recovery and tried to install, and I got all the way to selecting "yes" to install the ROM. But still, Error: can not mount sd card.
So basically I have figured out that I can navigate to the rom and attempt to install before I get the error, or I can just check my mounts and not even get past "install zip from sd card" before I get the error and have to restart the recovery. Could this just be the card's problem and I need a new one, or is it something else? I need help, I am completely lost at this point.
Thanks guys.
EDIT: I may want to add that this same sd card completely crapped out on me about a month ago and I had to reformat it to get it working again.
Also, does anyone else always have their roms slow down after awhile? I would say that the average time for one of my roms to start getting random restarts and constant app closings is about one months time.
Format it on the computer. Fat 32
If that doesn't work try using Panasonics SD card formatting utility.
If that doesn't work maybe try changing voodoo.
Okay I am finished cutting and pasting what I found regarding this issue using search.
Hope one of them helps. If not... utilize the search in the forum. It is pretty neat!

Ok. Also, I have a question for you. I noticed that you are using your device on AT&T. Did you have constant notifications popping up about a Tmobile contacts backup or anything else? That is another thing that I need to find a way to get rid of.
I am on t-mobile. But I uninstalled t-mobile back up and use google. The Panasonic sd card format worked for somebody else. So did following the gb starter pack. There are a lot of posts regarding this issue. Different things have worked for different people.
System Toolbox is my preferred app to uninstall system apps like t-mobile back up.

Thanks for all the replies! Ill attack the phone again in awhile and see what I can do.
I had this problem too after a failed restore sent my phone into a bootloap. When I odin'd a new kernel, it wouldn't mount, even though I had CWM. It wouldn't work until I odin'd a new rom. I used FB's starter pack and it fixed it perfectly.
Also, about the T-mobile contacts, it's annoying as hell because I don't have T-Mobile either. Once you load a KJ6 rom, use FB's debloater to get rid of T-Mobile contacts backup. You will notice a large amount of ram is freed up from deleting all of the t-mobile items.
Also, if you are starting from KD1 froyo, you need to follow FB's starter pack to make sure you get the proper gingerbread boot loaders on your phone.
Your SD card may be going bad, is there another one you can try?
I've had the same rom for months and haven't had issues or slowdowns. It might be caused by a specific app you are using. Though it may not be a bad idea to go into CWM every now and then and wipe cache, dalvik, and fix permissions.

Infuse 4G reboots while still in Android??

It's hard to explain what in the hell is happening with this phone. Here's what it does, when you turn on the phone, it goes through its usual process of booting up. After booting up, and at least use the phone for ten second, the phone's screen turns off, the phone vibrate for one time, the screen comes back on at the lock screen, vibrates 3 times, and it repeats this process forever. I had a video for you to see what the phone was doing, but im a new user. so i cant show you the video on youtube. ill probably put the video in a zip later on tonight.

go into mounts and make sure you sdcard is mounted......like how in JB and KK in recovery sdcard0 is internal and sdcard1 is external but make sure that the internal is mounted...and right above the go back text is mount usb storage where when pressed will give you the ability to put files on either internal or external sdcard when you finished adding them to your internal sdcard just click unmount usb storage and check after like 5 sec that one or both sdcards are mounted then look for the files through the install folder and if found go back to mounts and wipe cache, data, system, and datadata then go back and go to advanced then wipe dalvik then go to install and flash the files you put into your internal sdcard then to be safe wipe cache and dalvik again then reboot

Link2SD hangs phone

Hello. I've been using Link2SD to link apps to my ext4 SD card partition with no problems, but yesterday I deleted some system apps and now, after booting and showing the lock screen (I can unlock and use my phone for a few seconds) the screen turns black, but it's still on because I can see the backlight on, nothing responds, even the bottom bar with the triangle, circle and square buttons dissapear.
I hold the power button and it does nothing, I have to force power off by holding the power button, and when I turn it on again, it boots normally, then shows a "Android is optimizing applications",, after aprox 15 mins optimizing apps, it boots normally , and then hangs with the black screen again, and the loop continues unless I remove the SD card and none of my linked apps shows (thats why I guess the problem is with Link2SD).
Can anyone help me here? I don't know if there is any way to log things that happen before the phone hangs, and never had this problem before, so I'm kinda lost here.
I deleted the apps "My consumer cellular" and "My extras", without making a backup first, and I don't know what's their real function. Maybe all this is happening because I deleted them? Because the other are Google apps that I don't think will cause this issue.
I attached the apps that I removed before the problem started.
Thanks for any help.

Wow, glad someone can help me!! Yes! I wiped both partitions using TWRP recovery. Right now I'm experimenting with wiping the ext4 partition (I backed it up) and link some new apps to see if the problem persists. If not, I'll copy all my old apps from the backup and try to boot again.
Strange problem, if the problem persists after all that, I guess I'll have to flash the ROM like you did.
Edit: I noticed an issue that happened to me me before while copying files from the ext4 partition. There were 2 files that I could not copy because of an error, the same error happened to me before with this phone while I was copying apps files from the SD card (FAT partition, using the normal "Move to SD card" Android button). Those file that I could not copy were causing my SD to be unmounted after boot, and I would mount it again and after some seconds, unexpectedly unmounted again!
I can't copy all the files to the ext4 partition, probably the mounting software I'm using is doing something wrong, because I copied the full sized folder from it to my pc. I'll have to reinstall all the apps, but at least my phone won't be hanging again (I hope!).
Did flashing you ROM again solved all the issues for you? Doing that wipes data? I've never flashed another ROM.

If flashing the stock ROM or a custom ROM will solve the problem.
hint:
If you want to do backup applications, you can use the AutoMoto! "Backup / APP" This option is being tested, but so far did not matter with me.
