Toggle EDGE or GPRS? - HTC Inspire 4G

Is there anyway to toggle the Inspire to use only EDGE or GPRS for data?
When I used my Inspire in Europe with a european SIM card, I could only get GPRS, which worked fine for checking e-mails and whatnot, but made a huge difference in battery life.
It would be nice to be able to toggle from H+ to either edge or GPRS so that I still get e-mails in the background while saving battery life, but have the ability to toggle back to H+ when I want to surf, etc.
Thanks!

There is. Enter this into your dialer *#*#4636#*#* then select phone information and under "set preferred network type" select GSM only. This is the only way that I know how to do this.

Certain roms give you the option to change networks by going into wireless and networks and selecting mobile networks. Virtuous lets you I think.

THANKS!
I don't suppose anyone has an App to do this automatically?
My inspire is stock, so I don't use different ROMS.
Edit: I tried saving the number as a contact, but didn't work...
Thanks

EDIT: Typed the *#*#4636#*#* code into market, and there are several apps that automatically get you to the phone info screen. Downloaded one called Phone Info.
Thanks

In Wireless & Networks I see no place where I can select 2G.

I remember it being there, though I haven't ran stock in a while, maybe I'm mistaken

It is there. At least on my ROM. Stock Desire HD ROM. Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Network mode > Select GSM only. My phone immediately switched to "E". and stayed there. Can't believe I never noticed this here before.

The inability to switch to Edge or 2G will cost AT&T this customer when my contract is up. At work my phone is useless as it tries to hang onto the smallest trace of H+ instead of switching to 2G. When it switches to 2G for short amounts of time I get 2 bars and I can use the phone. Ten seconds later it goes back to H+ with no bars and I lose the connection. All this while my colleagues with Verizon or Sprint have solid 2 bars minimum 3G signal.
If I could set the phone to 2G (using the stock ROM) I would be happy.

You are in a marginal area. I have this problem at home, which is why I run a Microcell. Fortunately, I get a better signal at work. I assume my previous WinMo device had a much better radio because I got excellent reception with it at work, although data was slower. At home, I shared the same frustration of having a crappy 3g connection, when I could have a good edge connection with steady bars and no ability to lock it. I don't understand AT&T's decision with this.

itd be really nice if people who have been running a non-stock rom since 2 days after they got their phone would stop commenting on threads where they obviously have no clue what they are talking about. Ive been searching around for this 3g/4g toggle solution and in no less then 4 of the threads (everyone ive looked in) some dope is telling us ITS THERE ON THE STOCK ROM.
No its not, and your wasting everyones time.
Thanks

If it is not there then why do you keep wasting your time looking? Who is the dope now?

Do I really need to say it? Lets keep it civil. Now if it is not there on stock then it is not there. Simple. Let it go.

bad signal related to the radio version?

So I decided to Root, S-Off and flash Coredroid v4.7 on my Inspire, but I leave it with the stock radio (12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M), but the signal seems pretty weak even on places where my Nexus one was at full strength my Inspire seems to only be able to grab 2 bars at much, and the WiFI connection seems week too, on my N1 I used to be able to get full signal from more than 20 meters, but my Inspire seems to lose it after 15 meters.
I read some posts and other blogs/forums and some attribute those issues to the radio version, so I hope someone can give me an opinion and tell me if I should Update the radio and to which version if so.
Thanks in advance.
Try this
For phone signal, try *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. This will bring up a screen that has 5 options, I went to phone and scroll to the bottom. Under the preferred network I changed it to GSM only as its an AT&T phone anyway, I was getting 1 or 2 bars at home and was missing calls left and right. after setting this, back out and shut the phone down then restart. I have all 4 bars now. It would also eat the battery, mine was on WCDMA preferred and I think it was searching for that signal constantly. There is a screen for wifi also but there is nothing adjustable there.

Odd that it would have WCDMA preferred as default. I just adjusted this as well and it improved the signal in my office. Good catch.
Gsm only does not work for me, my lame carrier runs on gsm but their mobile internet runs on their 3g so I need to connect to both. Setting it to wcdma/gsm auto seems to have improved the signal

Hey all, I'm on AT&T running radio 26.06.04.06_M. Any specific recommendations? GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) seems to give me the best service based on bars, but that doesn't necessarily mean much (I'm on an HSDPA connection with 3/4 fluctuating right now).
Also, I think I might not have HSUPA enabled with this radio, I'm only getting .56Mbps upload and around a 2.79 download (Whereas on standard 3G with my old iPhone I typically pulled around a 1.2). HSDPA is without a doubt enabled and it shows that I'm connected on that network, but is there a better radio I should try out?

Only 2G network. Disable 3/4G

Sometimes while the battery is low, I like to put the phone into 2G mode also known as edge and get off the 4G network. I remember my myTouch had this with cyanogen and really any other asop Rom also had it.
How do we enable it on a device running sense? Or this phone for this case.
Thanks

It should be under the Mobile Network sub menu.. it's not ASOP or Cyanogen exclusive.
The option doesn't exist for us on our ROM. I like that feature too. Here is a workaround. Go into your dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* and a menu will pop up. Go to Phone Information and you'll see a drop down that shows WCDMA Preferred as the default. Go into the drop down menu and choose GSM Only. It will cycle the radio off and then back on and then you will have Edge only. Alternatively if you select WCDMA Only, you will only ever have 4G. This is useful if you live in an area that is right on the cusp on 2G/4G. Our phones will drop to Edge if the Edge signal is stronger than the HSPA signal. Sometimes this is annoying since you could still have 4G speed if the phone didn't automatically switch to Edge.
Also, I don't remember who the dev is, but there is an app in the Market called Network. This app allows you to go right into that phone info menu mentioned above without needing to put that code into the dialer. It can be hard to find since there are so many search results if you search for "network" in the Market. If you are interested I will look up the devs name for you and you can find it that way. Hope this helps.
Edit: The person above is correct actually, I didn't see it before but you can choose WCDMA/GSM Auto, GSM Only or WCDMA Only from that Mobile Network submenu in the Wireless & Networks menu in your standard settings menu. Thank you for pointing that out.

Putting 2g only on kills battery faster....harder for stuff to sync faster ...phone stays awake longer. Google put out a whole video on YouTube about it.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
wow, totally forgot to try this trick at work. My phone sits there with a full strength 2G signal, but the bars lie, it's very unreliable and cripplingly slow (much slower than edge is capable of). Now I have a 1-2 bar 4G signal and am getting very acceptable speeds. 1.8Mbps down 1.3Mbps up (FCC mobile broadband test, 3 tests averaged).
I just wanted to add that I hunted around for widgets to provide a quick toggle for this function, whether that be forcing GSM as some need to do, or forcing WCDMA as others need to. My search turned up a few like EasySwitch but it seems that none of them work with gingerbread.
No need for the special code...
You can find that here too:

Best option is menu>settings>power>"enable power efficiency"
The S series, and Sensation, use less power in 3G mode than in 2G mode. RTFM.

Keeping it on disk space may use more battery charge, but it helps preserve my 2GB 4G data cap. It seems like a reasonable trade-off for me. Does anyone know if the "Data Used" number shown under the "My Account" app is accurate?

3g/4g/LTE Toggle

so i was playing with my friends s2 which is on sprint and he has a 3g/4g toggle. is it possible to do this on ATT? is it possible to run sprint roms on the att version?
i would love to be able to move data to 3g/edge while i am not really using the phone and this can save me tons of battery.
if someone knows please help.
also, ive tried the manual mode but it doesnt let me select other options in network settings.

Please do not even think about trying.to put a epic 4g touch rom on the skyrocket. Or anyother phones rom. Do not flash anything other then skyrocket. , and tmobile galaxy s2 roms on your phone or you will brick it. And no there is no toggle to turn off lte. You can edit the apn settings so it will not use lte. A quick search will explain how u can do that
Not sure about AT&T but the Rogers ROM has a fairly quick way to switch... In Settings-Wireless and Network-Mobile Networks, there is "Network Mode" which allows you to pick from GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto mode), GSM/HSPA (Auto mode), GSM only, or HSPA only... I switch it to the GSM/HSPA (Auto mode) when I am not in Ottawa (no LTE in Deep River) and it saves a fair bit of battery.

Could be. I don't recall. I've seen it in others as well. Was surprised as I had already known ATT didn't have it in stock.
It is. Att base roms this is what you get
Type: *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer and hit the first one, there at the bottom u can turn off 4g Lte and 4g HSPA
Which setting do you use though to shut it off to 3G only on AT&T? The options aren't very descriptive. Some are obviously not used but I'm not sure which to try. Here's the options I get by putting in that *#*#4636#*#*:
WCDMA preferred
GSM only
WCDMA only
GSM auto (PRL)
CDMA auto(PRL)
CDMA only
EvDo only
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Unknown
GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto [This is the one that is selected]
Also, it seems like it doesn't let me change it. I tried setting it to GSM only and when i came back to the screen it was still on the LTE Auto setting.
Yeah I'm confused what to choose to o

3g or 4g, with no LTE would be stellar. It would get me more play time on Pandora and Tunein. I use Nav and Tunein, when I am on the road, and use a 1Mah charger, and it's a very slow and steady drain, I suspect when I am in and around home, St. Louis, I am running LTE and eating battery.
I suppose if I have to have LTE constantly, another option would be better pricing structure. Maybe 5gigs for 30 a month, or unlimited again.
The att radios are rat locked.
So no you can not change these settings.

Switch to 3G - save battery?

Hi -
The battery on my Skyrocket is draining so fast (and I do not browse internet, do not play games and sometimes do not even make any phone calls!)
So I have been looking for ways to save battery-
I found one idea: LTE & 4G uses more battery than 3G/GSM, and since my phone is usually on LTE or 4G- why not switch it to 3G?
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone Information
Scroll down
uncheck GSM/CDMA/4G/LTE
check WCDMA only
So this should switch the phone to 3G - but for some reason it doesn't (in the phone status it still shows that the phone is using LTE- although LTE doesn't show in top bar)
I wonder, should I also put something in "SMSC" field after I change to "WCDMA only"?
Something else drain your battety. I dont think its problem in network.

If you add the option in Settings.apk, it'll force it to stick onto one network, since it'll turn off the MIMO antenna, which kills LTE.

[Q] HTC One X - Force LTE connection?

I have ALWAYS had very poor AT&T service in my house, from my iphone 3g, iphone 4, iphone 4s....as soon as you pull in my neighborhood AT&T service just goes to ***
I got the One X however and realized I can pick up LTE here when the radio first turns on! I can put it on airplane mode, take it off...and I'll get LTE for about a minute. I get 10mbps down instead of the 1mbps when it's just on "4G"
However..this can barely make it through a SpeedTest as it's 1 or 2 bars of service...then it switches from 2 bar 4G LTE to the 3 or 4 bar "4G"
The phone is thinking I get better service with just the plain 4G so it forces me to connect to that....in reality it's a tonnnn slower and much worse.
Is there any APN setting or any root hacks to force the LTE connection? I get LTE pretty much everywhere in town (las vegas) but like I said my neighborhood doesn't seem to be on AT&T's maps!
If you go to your dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* it will take to a screen where down a bit from the middle is the option "select network type" tap that and there is and "lte only" option. I have read that this works to force only hspa+ but can't confirm it for forcing lte. Give it a shot though.

This does NOT work for forcing either HSPA or LTE. It always reverts back to auto. AT&T does not let you choose your network, period. We will not be able to choose the network unless and until we get the Rogers ROM working on the AT&T units (or until someone builds a custom ROM giving us the functionality of Rogers).

Sure it does... rogers devices and debloated ROMs are the only ones that can be forced into LTE mode. It's AT&T ROMs that can't

If you are rooted and have an unlocked bootloader, try a version of CleanRom or a stock rooted rom which is not an AT&T base. I have been able to lock my radio to LTE (only when not making calls that is) with CR V and I am on AT&T. The only thing is that when you make a call you get bumped to 3g/HSPA because AT&T doesn't do voice over LTE
