[Q] Wifi, or 4G? - HTC Sensation

I just got a sensation and I absolutely love it! I just have some questions.
First off, I have a great connection with My Home Wifi and T-Mobiles 4g network, so what should I be connected to at my house? What saves the most battery?
If it is wifi, how do I disable the Wifi Calling Notification that just tells me "Wifi Calling Ready" Like I get it.. I don't need the ugly notification reminding me. I can't find out how to disable the notification, without disabling my calling....
Thanks!

WiFi, would be better. I don't know the second question, I don't have a sensation.

Uh, yeah you can. Turn it off.

Turn off wireless LAN unless you are using it. But for web browsing, cellular data provides better battery life than using WiFi.

WiFi is easier on the battery and in some cases faster than your mobile network:

To turn off the notification, pull down the notification bar and tap the offending app.
You should see this screen:
Now tap the off button and the offending app notification goes away. Keep in mind you now will make all calls through your mobile network. =)

Dude, battery life shouldn't be your main concern when it comes to WiFi vs. mobile data. You should be using WiFi whenever possible so as to save as much of your allotment of data as possible. As pointed out, WiFi can be faster than mobile data. There's no reason to be using mobile data when WiFi is available unless your battery is extremely low (which shouldn't be an issue when you are at your house).

The JuiceDefender app is good here also, as you can configure it to turn on your wifi radio when you are at a known location such as your home (it learns and knows where you are based on which cell towers you are connected to), the wifi then gets turned off when you are out and about.

Also, it depends on the strength of your wifi - if you have bad wifi signal in some you might be better off with using your 4g network so that you don't drain your battery by having your wifi radio on all the time
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App

wifi definitely saves the battery at least in my case. keeping phone on tmous signals is a big battery drain. also i will recommend using juice defender to prolong your battery life even more.

Wifi saves battery and data. No one likes being throttled lol

Sloooow WiFi download speed!

Holy crap! My wifi download speeds are averaging 800kbps, while my Droid X is getting 8mbps. And yes, I am on wifi. Upload speeds are actually a little faster than the X at 2700kbps versus 2200. What gives?

try menu-settings-wireless & networks-wifi settings-hit menu again to pull up the advanced menu. From there I set my wifi sleep policy to never and there is a toggle the best wifi-performance, which I haven't tried yet because I never needed it. Have you tried that yet?
Wifi calling appears to be the culprit. I rebooted the phone and ran speedtest several times and got download speeds of 12-13mbps but once I enabled Wifi calling the dl speeds dropped to ~800kbps and remained there even after force closing Wifi calling. Confirmed! A second reboot gives me my speeds back.
Yeah same here when I restart it I get the speed back up but again after awhile it slows down big time don't know how to fix it
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
I just finished a factory reset and the only app I have installed is speedtest.net. With wifi calling on I cannot reproduce the problem now. I hope the factory reset fixed it but I suspect the problem may be caused by some other app I installed earlier. Google Voice maybe? More investigation...
Nevermind. I installed GV and my download slowed again so then I uninstalled it but the issue was still there. I had just booted up the phone before I was trying this so maybe it just happens over time. Anybody else reproduce this?
Same here, I pretty much can pinpoint the Android market at this point. After freshly restoring my WiFi I get 20k Download/ 5k Upload using speedtest.net app. After visiting the Android market and screwing around in there a bit I get 3k Download/5k Upload every time. Tried with multiple apps it seems to be the market that causes this every time for some reason.
I don't know about the market being the cause. I cycled the wifi off then on again and now my speeds are back. I even opened the Market again once I read your post but my speeds aRe still normal. Maybe you have to download an app from the market over wifi. Checking now.
Yeah I don't think its the market I restarted my phone got the speeds back up then went to market speeds were good then after awhile the speed dropped back down as low as 400kbs compared to the 4 or 5 mbs I got after restarting.

I think I figured it out. I have been playing with my phone for about an hour and a half and I could not get it to slow down until... I plugged it in to charge. I ran a test right after I plugged it in and sure enough it was slow. I then cycled wifi and got my speeds back. Can someone else try this to confirm?
Nevermind. That didnt work the second time I tried it.
Bump. Just got a Sensation today and am having the same issue. Anybody figured a workaround or fix yet?

Mine can not hang on to a network for nothing, even after enabling "never sleep" policy. Speeds are random: sometimes it's slow, sometimes it's ok.
It looks like it's been a few months since anyone has posted on this problem. I just got my Sensation and am having the same issue. I also have a My Touch 4G Slide and noticed that it did the same thing. But once I went into the Wifi settings and check the max speed box, it solved that issue right away. I tried it on my Sensation with no luck. I have to disable and enable the Wifi in order to get my speed back up. Anyone have any updates/fixes on this problem? Is this a software or hardware issue?

Best Battery Saver App Ever!!

Ok so i have tried many battery saver apps and have come to the conclusion that most of them are a joke. Until i tried BatteryXL. With a bit of setup this app has give me over 20 hours of life with use. I am talking about web surfing, texting, gaming, calls and some picture taking. I use my phone a lot and it just would not make it half the day. I even tried an extended battery. But even that sucked. Juice defender isn't bad if you buy the pro version, but BatteryXL is free. There have been a few glitches , as it is still in beta, but they are very minor and didn't effect its usage. So if anyone is looking for an app to help with battery life try it and see how it works for you. I am no way affiliated with the creators of this app. I am just a big fan of it and i know how many evo user complain about battery life. Also if you want to know i am using Sinister rom version 7 and anthrax kernel 009. The rom and kernel you use will affect how much this app helps.
Again i have no affiliation with the make of this app so don't ask me if you have issues. Submit then to the maker.
EDIT: If you don't have an intelligent thing to say, then do the world a favor and keep your mouth shut. The air is polluted enough as it is
Guys, please do not make me close this thread. Stay on its original purpose instead of attacking each other.
Consider this a warning. There is no point on either use so much exclamations marks, replying in such way to it and then attacking back in the same way.....
I am telling you the nicest way, stay on topic.
YOU ARE WARNED!
Thank you D.O.C. I just wanted to inform others about this app because i know battery issue is a big problem for most of us Evo users. And i am sorry for the off topic spat
BatteryXL has saved my battery.. i've been under 50% for over 4 hours already and still have 39%..
thanks for sharing...
Interesting
I switched over to an ICS rom and it still is getting me around 15 hrs or so. I love this app.

Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Yea I've tried using this app but it just doesn't work like juice defender... this app doesn't auto sync 3rd party email apps or twitcaster... juice defender makes it possible to sync specific apps during a specific time frame to resync information while the screen is off.. I haven't seen this app (battery XL) do that at all...

Yeah, I'm a bit leery of it myself, after reading all sorts of comments about people having issues getting various radios to come back on. Would like to see more feedback about it, though.

Only issue I have had is every now and then it won't turn my mobile data back on. I will take that since I can get almost 20 hours of use every day. I will post a screen shot of it later today to prove it.
Yeah, I enjoyed this app until I too had problems with it randomly turning off my data, other than that it is great at saving battery life.

Here is a screen shot of my battery status s of right now. 12 hours and still over 60%. Not as much use today but still, about 1 hour of web and games, and lots of texts.

What does this app do exactly..? In what ways does it save battery... does it lower cpu usage or does it disconnect wireless connections when not in use or what..?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Like most battery savers out there it controls connections and other features. But unlike most others this one actually does help get you more battery life. Before using this app i would only get about 12 hours total before I needed to charge. Now as you can see from above I get about double that.
@OP.
prior to using this app, were you one of those (like me) who always turn off unnecessary radios and services manually? Cuz I've always done that, and if this app makes an effect beyond that, I might be interested.
But I prefer to do it manually, myself (not to mention, due to OCD, I would always turn off radios manually). Are you not in that camp?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
No. I can't say I am. I never remember to turn them off so this app is great for me. It does have some other cool stuff. Check it out is all I can say. It is free. So if you don't like it you aren't out anything.
Simply put, the app sucks. Sucks bad. The concept is good, but the app, it sucks

Battery life with native sip client (incoming calls enabled)

Curious if anyone is using this feature on a daily basis? Just got a Sensation. ARHD, tmobile wifi calling all day along with the sip client, so no gsm at all. Didn't use it all too much. Maybe 40 minutes total of screen time, and 20 minutes of sip calling. Battery lasted about 11 hours.
Retrying today with a new Anker battery.
Here to but I use phone so i get less
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
I use talkatone, does that count?
My phone definitely gets less than 11 hours but i use my phone more than you are describing.
I was hoping there was someway of staying at 2g speeds untill a call comes and then switch to 4g if available for the duration of the call. 4G Radio uses more power than 2G
There is
Settings network somewhere in there will say cdma auto put it on GSM only
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
I used Talkatone as well with my last phone. It was the only solution that worked reliably with that POS phone. But the Sensation's native SIP client works just great, so I've been using that.
On my first charge with the Anker battery, I've logged 8h11m so far, with the screen using 53% (1h29m), voice calls at 8% (7m), and 41m of music streaming over 4g. Lots of screen+4g usage from my extended lunch break today.
Still at 41% so far. I did notice that it stuck at 100% for over an hour off the charger today, and then dropped very slowly until I started using the phone. Is this typical of the Anker battery? Not calibrated yet? Or is it really that battery conserving when in wifi calling + sip mode when there's no major partial/kernel wakelocks in effect?
Need to find a screenshot taking program sometime, or upgrade to a ROM that has native support, preferably from the power menu.

That won't allow you to switch up to 4g to take the call though. Don't think latency with EDGE will be completely acceptabel for voip.
I use pbxes and Google and get about 8 he's of battery and then switch it out unless I go out
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
ouch, craven. That must be a ton of usage too?? I hammered my phone fairly hard (as hard as I ever normally would without knowing I'll have access to a charge or have extra batteries on hand).
13h with 2h screen time/data usage, half an hour of streaming music, half an hour of sip calls, and am at 18% on the first charge of an Anker battery.
I think I might be able to live with that. Will try to see how it does with wifi off and sip set to receive calls, all without much screen usage. Most likely will need to wait until honeymoon period is over.
How much drain does wifi on have? How about wifi on but no connection? Haven't installed any battery/wakelock monitoring apps yet in case they affect actual results without them.
What sip service do you guys use, I use grrove ip but I'd prefer to use a native app, links?
Sent from my sensational sensation 4g
Native app as in the internet calling feature of android starting with 2.3. It's a native sip client, so you'd need sip service that's trunked to Google Voice.
I've been using a pbxes account with great success recently, although I'm looking to implement my own server soon with some added perks.
The easiest way to setup a free pbxes account is to download sipdroid and use that app to sign up for a pbxes account. The free pbxes account is technically not supposed to allow trunking google voice, so this is one way of getting it to work.
Once you sign up with sipdroid, you can delete the client and use the native client. Or you could install csipsimple, a much better client than sipdroid. You could play with your pbxes account and setup hold music, etc (native client does not support hold, but csipsimple should).
You will need to login to your pbxes account and fill in your personal information or they will delete your account after a week.
There are other solutions as well. Let me know how it works.
Well I switch out battery cuz I need alarm in am lol scared it won't be on lol ill run from wake up till night and post info

Op, are you rooted? I noticed my battery goes a little quicker since I rooted and flashed cm10. I also noticed you are on 3g, did you disable 4g, is 4G available in your area? Maybe the phone constantly searching for 4G is draining. Not sure how that would show up in battery usage stats though.

Yes I am rooted. I noticed the battery draining faster after I flashed Google Wallet. I am stock rooted though. I turn off NFC when I don't need it, and the app doesn't sync often.
I'm not in a 4G area, but that has never drained my battery before. I can't imagine Wallet would be draining my battery..
I should also note that my brightness is set to full at all times. What's of interest to me is the fact that it isn't draining so much when the screen is on, it's when the screen is off is when it drains the most it seems. I'll leave the phone off for at least 20 minutes and when I turn it back on it'll have lost a few points.
Can't seem to figure it out. Like I said, it seems like I started noticing the battery draining quicker after I installed Google Wallet.

Spare Parts any use?

So I charged my phone last night, went to bed at 99% n woke up to it at like 76%. Sync was turned off as usual, so no idea what would cause it to wake constantly like that. I remember using spare parts on my OG there was a option to see what apps were causing wake. I'm still stock right now, not even rooted. What's the consensus for background processes in settings-> development? Standard limit or limit to 1 or 2 processes? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Little side note, what's the preference on using the power saving option?

I do not use power save and my phone will only lose about 8-10 percent at most. I'm all stock as well so I can't tell you why..... but if you are setting your phone in an area at night that gives you low signal it will eat your battery fast.

yeah signal strength and background data can hurt battery a lot, even when sync is turned off a lot of apps will still update automatically, for example weather, news, and the like. The easiest way to check that is to disable mobile data next time you leave it overnight, if it still has high drain then you have an app putting it in a wake lock which you have to use another app to find the culprit.

I stay connected to WiFi the entire time that I'm at home. Probably the only times I use it. Then I'll turn it off walking to my car. That's one of the reasons I use it, so I know I have a steady signal and not connected to data so that a fluctuating signal would cause overnight battery drain.
