[Q] enable wifi hotspot - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Please excuse my ignorance, I am very much looking forward to purchasing a Samsung Galaxy S 4G on AT&T.
I currently have a Nexus One and love all the features (tethering and wifi hotspot), now I found out that if I want to keep my features. I will have to buy an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S 4G just like my Nexus One.
<here is where I get all newbie>
Can I buy the AT&T locked and someone enable the above features and get around AT&T charging me and arm and leg?
thanks

Well the sgs4g comes with the option to tether...its on settings, wireless and network, tehtering and portal hotspot, mobile AP...all you do is activate it and it works...just dont go over your data limit and i think you should be fine

I have an unlimited plan, but according to AT&T, if I attempt to activate the option, there will be an 'account' check and it will determine that I do not have the tethering or Wifi option on our account. My wife has the ATX and she is not able to use either, unless you calls AT&T and asks for the feature in which will cost a ton of money.
My Nexus One is unlocked and I think (again.. I am a newbie) that is why I can use it, so.. will the AT&T SGS4g come unlocked when I buy it from AT&T? (i don't think so), so ... how do I proceed?
I think .. I am going to really like this phone, just do not want to looks the features that I use from time to time.

If you do manage to unlock your device to permit the hotspot feature and AT&T discovers this, they may attempt to charge you for it. I would recommend switching to T-Mobile if you want to use that feature without ridiculous charges.

T-Mobile will start charging $4.99 for WIFI HOTSPOT

Yesterday, i was talking to T-mo Customer Representative and she tried to convince me to signing up for WIFI HOTSPOT for EXTRA $4.99 per month. i was like, "i can already to that to my phone it's part of the feature of the sensation." She said " that feature will soon be removed so in the future if you have a problem using your phone as a WIFI for other devices, your going to need to sign up for the service.
So guys is there any truth to this? is there a way to still use our WIFI HOTSPOT in the near future and not get charge?
Its kinda the truth. They do charge for hotspot, but if you don't over use it they never notice you are tethering and so they don't make you add the feature to your plan. If you use it too much they can and often do block you and make you add on the feature. The part that is news to me is the price you were told as the feature used to cost $15 and its still listed as such through tmo.
It is still 14.99.

Wow, this feature should be free because...we're using our data plan. This sucks
Can't we just root the phone so it becomes free again?
Root or not, they CAN tell if you are tethering. Now they won't bother looking into your account unless you use it excessively. If you do they will block you and you will be presented with a message that your account doesn't support tethering and that you need to upgrade.
My provider here in aus does this crap with enabling tethering.. They charge 10 extra a month i jailbroke my iphone and didnt pay and now i have a phone that rnables better features and still dont pay.. Just root and flash and do as u please till they find out they only trying to screw u.. U dont buy car with headlights then the government tell u to take the headlights out to drive on the road unless u pay.. Screw em lol as u can see this tethering annoys me lol

[Q] Can I use WiFi hotspot on my Sensation 4g without paying T-mobile?

I recently just noticed a 14.99 charge on my T-mobile bill and I don't think I should be paying for a feature I've been using for free for years. Is there any app or rom (since I'm S-OFF and rooted) that I can use on my Sensation 4G instead?
It IS free (at least on this phone). Call them and ask for a refund, since you never ordered that service. Now if they ask, just tell them you don't even know what that "Hotspot" is...
WiFi Hotspot that comes preinstalled on stock ROM or ARHD should work fine. No need for any other app.

In Germany the "Deutsche Telekom" mother company of T-Mobile is also marketing WiFi Hotspots in public locations under the T-Mobile brand.
Just to give another idea of what that point on your bill might refer to as the other user thinks it should be free.
However if they are really refering to the use of the Hotspot app, that will not change with using a different app for that purpose, they just bill any traffic not originating from your cellphone seperately (maybe as an additional flat fee).
At least that's what some providers in germany say in their terms about using their phone SIM for any other purpose but a mobile phone.
Also- I have been using the hotspot feature for free since June '11... Don't know if avoiding this charge is a function of my refusal to set up the 'T-Mo sync" sw that they constantly request of me. Otherwise I am up to date w all other requested android updates on my Sensation 4G. Now I finally want to sync device as they have informed me that I cannot play my first android market purchased mp3 w/o sync set-up. Q? Is my free ride a function of my non-set-up of sync? PS- I think device is rooted as they complied w my request for some such so as to be able to use device w other carriers when out of country. Afterward I paid the 200$ to go 'value plan', own phone, off contract. Thanx in advance, VecZed

is my Samsung Galaxy S modified ?

I have a samsung GalaxyS 4G SGH-T959V Prepaid with Tmobile. I got it from a 3rd party dealer that was used apparently cause when I got home i noticed the Ime doesnt match the Number on my box.
Anyways, Im able to use my phone as a hotspot without paying the $15 a month on the prepaid plan. I think its the phone and not my account or sim. cause i took out the sim and tried it on a blackberry bold and when i did the hotspot and tried going on to a website on the computer. it redirected me to Tmobiles site that I need to pay and all that.
Anyways How am I getting by with this on the Samsung Galaxy ? was there a software or firmware download that gave it the ability to do this ? cause i didnt change anything ? not complaining that I can use my phone as a hotspot for free. Just want to know how im getting by with this and want to know if there is some kinda download or hack required for it incase I want to change phones.
I want to know if you can get by with this as well on the Samsung GalaxyS 2 cause thats the phone I want to upgrade to
oops wrong forum sorry
To know if your phone has been modded, check about phone in settings...

This phone came out before they started charging for it. But I think that most of us including me can tether for free anyways.

Anyone using tethering?

Read that someone got the 15 dollar charge added for mobile ap, but has anyone been able to usb tether without issues? I'm on a custom Rom, but was looking at the built in tether support

May be useless for you, but tethering (through USB and WiFi) works just fine here in Russia. No additional charges, of course.
Well I'm glad to know it works on the sk, but I guess I was wondering more about how T-Mobile likes it. If anyone knows that, maybe they can let me know

Hey there Shadowscott, i have been using the tethering and mobile access point feature of my sidekick for a long while and i can say that T-Mobile does not seem to have any issues with it. Keep in mind that i am using it on an unlimited data plan and it may act differently on a different plan.
I have always used Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether without any problems. It even works on the 200 MB data plan! :good:
Just use any root tether app, and you will be fine, unless you do it like my buddy that's on my account and use up 30gb. So far we just got a warning but i think he started using the stock app by accident.
I have a work-around for the native tethering app. But it requires apktools, smali editing.
Using KD1, and in the middle of a two-year stay in Greece, I'm able to connect with stock tether app and Greece's Cosmote phone service (even tethering to a Windows CE device).
Also, for anybody traveling with an unlocked Sidekick 4G, your US phone can get 3G in Europe. That's because the German TMobile uses both Band I and IV within its 2100 channel. TMobile's HTC Touch Pro2 also gets 3G, along with other higher-end TMobile phones.

Hey there!
I use USB tethering on my sidekick, and the problem is that they WANT you to pay the 15 dollars to pay for tethering. They can't just charge you for the service, that's illegal. At any rate, the way around this (sometimes t-mobile, for example, won't allow you to USB tether, and will cut off your tethering) is to use Google Chrome. You can download an add-on in their market-- search "User agent" and I currently use the "Ultimate User Agent Switcher, URL Sniffer", which is a red circle, with two arrows wrapping around each other. You then set your setting to Android 2.3, and now your laptop registers as your phone to your phone company. You will be 'mobile browsing' technically, you just have to make sure to click 'desktop' options when available on websites.
Note: This method is legal, as I was given it from a T-mobile representative, so please don't think this is some underhanded method for 'stealing'.

[Q] Very slow kbps on a rooted Tmobile Galaxy s3

I'm hoping someone might provide some insight into this situation: I have a Galaxy s3 with Tmobile 5gigabyte data plan. I rooted it, installed Jellybean and am running a wifi tether app to "try" to circumvent the $14.99 wifi tethering surcharge they now want to charge. I tether my ipad to my phone, or at least that was the plan. Right after making all the OS changes, the tether worked great. Within 2-3 weeks, however, the speed on the wifi tether app is showing a download speed of 0.2kbps -- just enough for my iPad to see the tether, but not enough to do any browsing with the iPad.
I talked with a tmobile tier 2 tech and he said that their network can see when another device is using my phone (and their network) to access the internet... I thought that a rooted phone broke me free from the tmobile shackles, but is it possible that they can still see -- by IP address, etc. -- that my dataplan is using unauthorized access? I'm not clear on what exactly I'm asking here, but the point is is I cannot seem to keep an adequate speed on a rooted phone to tether my iPad to it and it is frustrating! I haven't seen one post on this issue, but I cannot be the only one out there experiencing this. Thanks in advance for any advice/help...
Yes, they can tell.
There's something about user agents, but I don't know if you can make that pass from an iOS device.
