Themeing Sense? Any guidance? - HTC Sensation

I've been trying to mess with this for a while and cant figure it out...
If I take a random theme, and decompile it, then decompile the shared.m10 file, how do you figure out which picture represents what?
Do you need to just skim thru the texture files till you find what you think is the file you want to replace? Does anyone know which files represent, say the bottom dock bar and components?
I would hate to have to play the guessing game, but I guess I'll have to if that's necessary. I'd assume someone would know the file names of the normal files that are themed though...
Any guidance would be appreciated! I can find guides about what to do, but I have no idea how to figure out what files are what, except for guessing..

well bro after u decompile the fusion file look the same on ur fone as well as u scroll images srch the same on fone and soon u'll b able to co-relate all images.like u can c dock, clock, friends stream etc...apply the theme on fone and the jst read...little tiring bt once done its done.....

It will be a guessing game. The worst part about M10 tools is the fact the friking file names are never the same if you decompile more than once
At leas the order is the same... so you're just gonna have to get a 6th sense and remember where the texture you want to modify lives :/

Ah man... That's what I was afraid of hearing I've spent a good hour going through this theme and cannot find the phone icon.. Very frustrating to say the least..
Thanks for the responses guys.

I've spent about three hours and gone through 4 different themes multiple times and cannot find the phone icon in any theme....can anyone tell me if I'm missing something?

Well apparently it doesn't matter I can't find the phone image file, bc I cant even get the skin to install once I zip it back up with m10tools....
Am I doing something wrong...
First I pulled the installed skin from my phone..I used m10tools to decompile and decode the images..found the pictures I want to change, changed them, went back to start and hit save...Then placed the file in data/app, rebooted, but the theme doesn't show under skins?

can anyone post up a themed version of the stock or new MIUI rom flashable 3G indicator, themed to match this (or both):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788214
Thanks!
Do you mean you're after:
A theme for MIUI which has the 3G icons from that theme
or
That theme with the MIUI 3G icons?
Josh.

I know. I really want it lol, because i kinda hate the 3G indicator in the theme i have currently, as it's hard to see the upload/download arrows, so i just wanted a flashable indicator so I dont lose the cool notification pulldown
I can edit it with photoshop if I can find it. Can anyone give me a hint to the file path?
EDIT: Hah...ok I suck and fail.
I found the apk and edited the images. Looked great. Put the apk back together. Unistalled the original apk and tried to install my modified apk. Would not install. I'm done with it for now. I guess I will read up on signing tomorrow although I thought I had read that system apps didn't need to be signed.
I'll play with it more tomorrow.
do adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk
And the images should n in the drawable-hdpi. Folder if not just look around until u find the images
Then pull the framework from your current Rom and replace your images with the images you want then repush your framework hack to the phone and reboot

If you figure it out can you pack a zip of just the 3g icon in blue as well for me?
Thanks man
Thanks for the tips. With a little help from google, I was able to figure it out.
Which icon did you need exactly? The 3g toggle or the notification bar?
well, i did it and replaced some old icons with cooler looking ones, but the 3g icons (along with similar data icons) did not show up. all of the other ones showed up. also, i read a thread where this dude got 4g icons from another rom and installed them on his phone to make it look like he had 4g, but then hours later, he experienced loss of mobile data... and now i think i am too... any suggestions?
I'm sorry I can't help you. I am learning all this myself and wouldn't pretend to know where to start on that. All I can say is that if you are going to make any changes then backup early and often.
The 3g toggle icons I was looking for were in system/app. I merely reskinned them and dropped them back in.

i wanted notification bar icon
I'm running a theme and mine is already skinned. I think either way you would still have to adb push it onto your phone. I did some googling and took a crash course on changing system icons.
Once I figured it out, it made sense (i know that sounds stupid, but after i did it, I was like oh yeah I get it now). I know that's not a big help, but I'm new to this and wouldn't want to bork your phone. Maybe someone more knowledgable will come save the day.
Otherwise I would google in terms like editing apks and adb pull adb push etc. and maybe you will figure it out too.
Hell I can't wait to ruin my phone now that I am armed and dangerous =)

Is there any way to pack the png's so that I can flash them or install as an apk?
Anyone know how I'd do this? I already have the edited png's.
Can I send any of you guys the folder with the icons and you can help me out with this?
Thanks again
It seems the easiest way to change or theme icons is to not unzip them. Just open them with 7zip and make your changes, then close it. They will stay compressed and all of the info and size will remain intact.
Once changed you will have to resign the apk or zip file.
I spent the better part of 2 hours reading up on it using these forums and google, but I do not in any way feel knowledgable enough to instruct you on the finer points. There are oodles of topics on editing apk's and signing them when you are finished.
The steps seem pretty clear:
1. download or pull apk
2. open with 7zip
3. make changes keeping sizes and file names the same
4. close
5. re-sign the apk or zip file (most likely have to delete the existing files to the original signing which will be replaced with your own)
6. push or install the zip or apk (make sure the original app is uninstalled prior to reinstalling the changed app)
There are various methods and tools. The most helpful thread I found on signing is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580
I hope this covers it all and is helpful to you. I am new at it and can only tell you to backup everything and if you are unclear on any of it, then don't attempt it.
Read all the posts related to it. There is great info and plenty of feedback on known issues or mistakes others have had.

Dialer Modification

Hey guys - looking to mess around with some custom UIs. I can't figure out what files need to be edited to change the dialer buttons. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
adb pull the framework-res.apk (located in /system/framework) and check the drawable folders (located in res). you could also check the htcdialer.apk (located in /system/app)
I've tried both files and I'm having no luck.I even tried pushing the htc dialer apk and the phone apk from other roms with no luck. I don't see anything in the framework or htc framework files.if someone knows the exact files to edit I'd be thankful.

I've actually tried that too. I just can't seem to find the correct PNG files. There are some in the Phone.apk but I tried swapping those and nothing changed. I downloaded thew framework theme of Redemption Revolution Rom - I literally pulled apart every apk and then did a search for all png files. Still didn't see the dialer buttons. I applied the theme to my phone, and the dialer buttons changed, so they have to be in there somewhere!!
I know on virtuous they are in HtcDialer.apk /res/drawable-hdpi if i remember right. and the button press color was in com.htc.resources.apk id have to look on my pc to be absolutly sure
•Sent from my Incredible
Well I found the actual button graphic, it's in com.htc.resources.apk. Now i'm just trying to find out how to patch the text color.
Anyone know that part? I'm almost there!
I'm pretty sure the dialer text is controlled by an xml file in the dialer.apk - what program should I use to make edits to the xml files?
Is there any way to edit the way the Android dialer displays the numbers you dial on the phone? This is something that the iPhone does really well, where it will split the numbers up into something like (800) 555-5555 instead of showing 8005555555.
Still looking for help on this...
I am trying to change the dialer button text to have white numbers instead of black. I'm having a hell of a time decompling the apks, finding the right xml file to edit, and then getting my changes to stick when I recompile. Anyone want to take a whack at it for me? I don't even know which apk I definitely have to edit to make the change.
I uploaded both the HtcDialer.apk and the Phone.apk from my phone in a rar file below... if anyone wants to take a look I'd appreciate it.

black on black text while DL notification bar????

Hey all, question for ya,
been messing around with the notification pull down. Got it just the way I want it, except for when downloading from the market I get black on black text. Hard to read. really no big deal but it is bugging the heck out of me. Read tons of posts/sites where people have had the same prob. on various phones/roms but can't find a solution.
Anyone know what to change or do???
Here is a pic for clarification.
Thanks Nycorduroy
There is a post a few pages back about modding the xmls.
Do a search in the theme thread for "xml edit"
phim, gets pretty in depth, easier way is to use apk manager, decompile the apk, modify the xml, recompile the apk. DO NOT PUSH THE RECOMPILED FRAMEWORK! pushing a recompiled frame work will give you endless fc's
open the new compiled framework with 7zip and drag your newly compiled xmls into your good framework. then push that one.
Dont forget to do a back up first!
If you dont want to edit the xmls, feel free to grab one of my themes and pull them out.
Thanks for the quick response!! Which xml files am I looking to edit?? they are in the framework file I assume. Any other info you have is appreciated. Right now it looks like it is just when downloading files to phone. After download all is good and in white. thanks again

The easiest way for you to do it is just grab the xml files that have already been edited from one of the other themes and plug them into your phone...
How do we know which xml is the right one to apply? And where?
@ ny - no worries, i like to help out any way i can, so I dont put a major lockdown on most stuff i have made
@ hack - yeah but then you dont learn anything by modding and pushing bad files then having to sbf and start ALL OVER!!! haha

You can literally change everything about the appearance of your phone. Any apk file can be opened and modified. If you download an app from the market, but you don't like the icon, you can open the apk and replace the icon.png You can also change the color of your menus etc. It is a complicated process and you'll have to learn how to work with apks, edit 9.png files, and even work with XML files and HEX colors. I actually gave up on themeing because it ended up taking up too much time...but if you're willing to jump in and get your elbows dirty you can change anything you want about your phone's appearance, and it actually is a really rewarding experience. To get started, just search the forum for a "guide to themeing".
You can also ask some of the themers for advice by sending them a private message. That's the best way to learn, if someone is willing to teach you.
Hope that helps.

Well I thing i got changing the icons down. an when i open the xml files in a hex editor theres too meny numbers, any simpler way to change colors by chance?
Im really surprised that kno one has been able to evelope an app that just gives a list of colors an icons an what not an u just click ok, if i was developer savy anuff id tottally have an app editor in the works
Just realized somthing, to change icons, wouldnt it be smarter to just open the apk in root explorer an over write the icon, insted of moving it to ur computer an possibly making it not install back on ur phone?
nah its a lot deeper than that, because after you open and edit an APK the .apk file must then be re-signed it's like it's digital signature... or it will not install on your phone... There are a few apps out that help a lot with the theming process.. and as for .xml files i think they are encrypted so you would have to use an xml decrypter and edit it then encrypt it again and add it back into the apk and resign the file... all these topics are covered in various parts of the forums though... here's a link with lots of information that can help you along your way...

xml files in android are not encrypted they are just compile form of xml. Its a space saver thing.
As for having a program to edit things in xml files on the fly its might be possible but since xml its soooo generic and there is really no way to make a program that would go through an xml file and change the things that represent colors and value etc... Something like this could be done for say a framework but then it would really be only for that framework or apk.

The sickly green color HTC used in the UI

HTC provided quite a few skins for this phone which I'm grateful for and combing the Matte skin with Apex is close to giving me the benefits of both ICS and Sense 4.0 looks (the Matte skin uses what appears to be the/a close representation of the ICS blue). Unfortunately, for whatever reason, HTC decided to leave a certain disgusting looking green present in its default menu/selection popup. Whats odd though, is that when you select something, it uses the blue from the Matte skin. HTC evidently didn't think this far through because there is no way those go together. What I was wondering was if anyone knows of where this green is, whether its a color code used somewhere (this is what I would expect) or an actual image. This is just very irritating to look at when it pop ups and really ruins the consistency of the phone IMO.
If your not sure what color I'm talking about long press on a photo and its that menu I'm referring to. The reason I think its just a color code is because the same green appears in the Root Explorer app at the top (thin line, right underneath the icon) so I would imagine the app is just referring to some default system color and using it to color that image. Could be totally wrong though and its just calling for an image that stretches to fill the space since its only a solid color.
Your solution would be to edit the systemui.apk and the framework-res.apk

I figured it was one of those two. I've only looked through the images contained in the SystemUI.apk file and didn't see anything that looked quite like the green bar. Guess I have to go through looking at the .xml files I'll check the framework-res.apk first thought and see if there's anything in there.
If I remember correctly, the images that are stretched in android are the png files that are the .9 images

Just change the skin type under the Personalize settings. Implements system wide changes for colors and everything.

probably a dumb question, but do we need root access for this, or can I find other means of access? I have encryption mandated by my corporate administrators and I dont feel like decryption/factory resetting/rooting/editing and finding out that it's all for naught when my conpany re-encrypts so i can get my email. Also, please note i'm a noob and may have just said nonsensical things herein

You can't edit those without Root access You won't even be allowed to edit files in the /system directory without root.
So I looked in the framework-res.apk file and I found a lot of images that I believe are the green selectors I was referring to in the OP. The only problem, is I'm not sure of a perfect way to replace them (tried naming the original something weird, but then everything started crashing and needed to use adb to rename the file) and I'm not sure how good it will even look since it appears when you select something it uses several images to create a "light -> dark" type selection. I suppose I could edit the transparency of the files, but I don't know if it will be worth the effort. I might not even be doing the process correctly because I just rezipped my customized framework-res file and changed the extension from .zip to .apk. Is that even the proper thing to do?
Look at the second post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869198
