Lost Root Access - HTC Inspire 4G

I lost root access after trying out a new rom. I first notice the problem when I tried backing up apps using Titanium Backup. It kept saying root access denied. I tried restarting the phone. That didn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled Titanium backup; that didn't work. I soon found out that all my apps that required root access didn't work either. How I fix the problem; I re-downloaded the rom zip I was using. Place it at the root of sd card. Power off my phone. Push power and volume key. Selected recovery and I was in Clockworkmod. So I did a wipe. And I reinstalled the rom zip I was using. After doing that; I regained root access without having to go thru the whole root process again on my Inspire 4G. I don't know if it will work for other phones. Give it try and posts your comments.

Or you could of went into Rom manager, went to download tm, extras and downloaded and re installed superuser

Thanks for letting me know. But; with out root access. Canyou still reinstall superuser from Rom Manager?

Yes sir. I remember I flashed a cyanogenmod nightly and there was a bug where it didnt have root. So I went into Rom manager and it installed without asking

+ 1. I remember that nightly build you're talking about. Installing superuser through ROM Manager did indeed fix the problem.

i had that exact same problem probably should have read this forum before i restored to the original back-up of the inspire which for me was 2.2 -.-

still stuck. Help!
i have no root access and my clockwork wont root into recovery, not even when i try the sound button power up. any ideas on what to do next?

Turn off fastboot on your phone. Then power down or restart your phone and hold down "Volume Down" and "Power" till you see the bootloader. From there you can enter "Recovery".
As far as root access did you install superuser if not on your phone or included in your ROM for some reason? Have you even rooted your phone and installed a rooted ROM?

I posted this same issue a couple days ago.
Here is the fix.
clear data for superuser app.
menu-settings-applications-manage applications- find superuser
Clear data.
it worked for me.

I had this with revolution one time. Reflashing the rom will also do the trick.

[Q] update 2.1.0-2.2.3 LOST ROOT???

I did the update just now and thought everything went well. This is my first time. Someone else put infused 2.1.0 on phone and everything that goes along with that. I followed the directions in beginning of post to manually do the update. Now all my root apps are telling me i'm not rooted. I rebooted, took battery out and back in. I have read entire Infused post and no one has had this issue? Before i started i went into ROM manager and made a back up first.
Not sure what to do now??
R you doweling of a OTA update or rom update I'm assuming rom. Is your supper user still available in your app drawer if so go into the setting and make sure its on. If not I recommended unbrick to stock and re-flash make you directions are followed to the T

Um SU is still in app drawrer. Not sure how to turn on or off. It is working ...that is, it is denying everything.

Can i restore the backup i did before the update? Will that take me back to 2.1.0 where all was well?
Just do a reboot, all your app will work after that

I did reboot. I have NO ROOT after this update but everything else is fine. All apps are there...but my root apps say i don't hve root. I d/l root checker from mkt and it says it;'s there but the binary isn't up to date or installed incorrectly. within SU i tried updating the binary and it fails.????

ok. i uninstalled the update to SU. rebooted. all Root apps still don't work and say i'm not rooted. NOW though. SU doesn't even come on and say denied. ....
Rooted just means you have the su app and can give su permissions to apps. If apps are asking for su permissions and not getting them it's the same as not being rooted as far as the app is concerned. Go into you super user app and see what has permissions and what doesn't, try to reset the settings.
update 2.1.0-2.2.3 LOST ROOT???
Just a recap...i was rooted running infused 2.1.0 and had and used rooted apps. I did the update 2.1.0-2.2.3 infused update then all of a sudden i couldn't get into titanium backup or any of my rooted apps. every time i open one SU denies it. I d/l root checker from mkt and it finds SU 3.0 on phone but says im either not rooted correctly or not at all. it gives me a log but i can't make heads or tails of it..so , if someone could I can PM you the log. I checked my SU permisions/settings...it should work...doesn't ands won't allow a thing. How did I lose ROOT? I followed the manual instructions in post.
All of this is related to me updating to 2.2.3 infused ROM. however, i have read the eintire forum front to back twice and no one has lost root because of the update...I even tried installing busybox but it fails because it says i am NOT rooted. I uninstalled the update to SU 3.0..that didn't work.
GTG-- I PM'd you days ago asking for your input on the upgrade but didn't hear back...upgrade done...issue...lost root....any ideas??
upgrade infused 2.1.0-2.2.3
Anyone out there with an idea? I haven't heard of anyone losing root having done this upgrade. Could i possibly still be rooted but maybe a setting got messed up somewhere? a file moved??
Still looking for answers...thanks
I have been through this many times before, you can do two usually the root access comes back after a reboot, since it didn't for you here are couple things you should consider to do
1) uninstall superuser than download again from market. Or
1) flash the rom again from scratch

well, since SU came from root and is a system app and apprently i am not rooted so i can not remove a system app I can uninstall the SU upgrade i did from mkt...which i did and rebooted, no luck. are you or anyone familiar with the "root checker" app? i can send a log if anyone can make sense out of it.
maruf010 i earlier post i said this is the first time i have tried anything like this with my phone ...i had soneone else root and install infused 2.1.0...i only attempeted the upgrade so...wonder if you can PM me and if you can maybe walk me through your second option?
I'm running out of ideas bro, I consider my self a "Rom flashing junky " flashing from one rom to another since my first captivate! let's do this again step by step, hoping this time it'll work..... make sure to transfer "titanium backup " folder to your computer before doing this. You can use it back later.
1) run gtg's back to stock using Odin
2) root the phone using super one click
3) drop all three the the new rom(2.1.0),
update v2.2.3, and the community kernel
4) download sgs kernel flasher from market
5) flash the community kernel, wait about 10 min let it do its thing till your phone comes back to live
5) power off the phone
6) using 3 button combo go to RED clockworkmod
7) install zip from SD card (flash the actual rom 2.1.0)
8) flash the update ( from 2.1.0 to v2.2.3)
8) finally do a wipe/factory reset
9) install titanium backup from market
10) restore your "missing app with data" only.
I know you did everything what i just said but my suggestion is to you ,do this again.

upgrade 2.1.0-2.2.3 LOST ROOT
Well, lesson to all. make a back up no matter what you do. Shouldn't of had to with an update but....since i did do a back up ..I AM BACK to 2.1.0 where i guess the saying is true...if it aint broke don't fix it. all is well..root back!. If I try going back to 2.2.3 i will do full install.
Thanks to everyone who had an opinion. weirdest thing ever...still bugs me why the ONLY this wrong with the upgrade was i seemingly lost root.
Glad u found a fix bro!
upgrade 2.1.0-2.2.3-LOST ROOT
Thanks!!! I'm all happy again. If anyone else has this issue...i really do beleive it is SU. Look at it on the mkt..since the 3.0 upgrade there have been many issues. I uninstalled the 3.0 SU upgrade and now i'm back to 2.6.3.1 BUT my binary is 3.0. I have yet to trythe infused upgrade again...IF (and when) i do it may not work because of my binary BUT all is well back on unfused 2.1.0!! No way to uninstall binary upgrade to SU i guess.
IF IT AINT BROKE--DON'T FIX IT..YEAH RIGHT ! LIKE WE ALL WON'T KEEP ROMMING!
upgraded infused 2.1.0-2.2.3 lost root
I am still having this issue when trying to upgrade infused from 2.1.0-2.2.3!!! Can someone answer this? The upgrade goes fine but then SU thinks im not rooted and then i can not restore any back ups cause titanium won't work. I haven't tried full zip only because i do not want to have to fetch all my apps again...zzz. I t looks like a lot of people have moved on to MIUI but i want to conquer this first..hahha
NOw, in the CWM instructions it says if you have a voodoo folder on your sd card delete it..well, that is for first time install....if i am trying the upgrade should i still delete the voodoo folder on my sd card? then move on to steop 7?? I reallly doi not want to delete something i may need. Inside that folder it is a log folder but in that log folder there are some CWM-recoveries..???
oh, and not sure if this matters all all but whn flashing upgrades or full ROM does it matter what you have your file system mounted as??
Anyone out there?? I just tried the update again and same thing...SU won't work...tried going into CWM and , download rom, super user, and i d/l SU from ther but then it says press ok to boot into recovery and finish unstalling...i press ok and nothing happens. I manually go into recovery...then what? Where did the download go and how do i finish installing SU??
PLEASE anyone...also, there is an option in recovery to "apply the update" Never used that one before...i just install from SD then pick the update...do i have to "apply update" after install then reboot?

[Q] root explorer won't allow me to delete

I've been working on my phone for about 6 hours now trying to fix whatever the hell is wrong with it, it started when I odened back to stock so i could flash the new miui update (recovery wasn't working, long strory) since than i have factory reset and odened back to stock like 10 times. The reason for this is because my phone at times will not install anything from market, apps would force close, updates wouldn't install, now the problem I have is that root explorer wont allow me to mount r/w so i can remover recovery. The tab works on the first page of root explorer but not when i navigate to system/bin. Ive googled all over the place looking for answers, ive done uninstalls, cleared data etc, nothing seems to works. I'm at my wits end with this thing, getting ready to call att for my second infuse!! any ideas before i call?

Stuck on white splash screen after disabling su permissions and Superwiping

My phone is stuck on the white splash screen that displays the HTC logo.
It happened because I’ve been trying to get an app working that requires me not to be rooted. I had tried a few of the “ hide your root” apps from the Market but none worked.
I eventually found a way to get it working by going into system/xbin and disabling all the su permissions.
However after disabling the su permissions I found I was unable to allow the permissions again when attempting to reverse the same procedure.
This morning I tried doing an ARHD Superwipe. I thought this would be similar to doing a factory reset (didn’t realise 4EXT had it’s own factory reset).
After doing Superwipe 4EXT told me I was now ready to flash my ROM. I still haven’t flashed the ROM, instead the phone attempted to boot up but got stuck on the white / HTC screen.
Is it normal procedure that Superwipe will completely wipe the ROM off my phone – hence the reason why it’s now stuck like this (until I flash the ROM again)?
I’m at work right now and don’t currently have the ROM on my SD card.
If I reflash the ROM when I get home will that fix everything?
I’m worried that I might have messed my phone up disabling these su permissions?
I can still get into recovery OK what it matters.
Please help if you can as I am panicking a bit here.

Hi,
Yes,Superwipe will clear your phone.
This includes the ROM.
Re-flash the ROM,and this will return your ROM,and SU.

Cheers guys I was hoping it would be as simple as that. I just had a bit of a panic this morning I guess! I've never used Superwipe with previous Androids.
Yeah I did make a backup of my stock ROM before flashing.
So in future is there a more easier way to restore the permisions in su?

I found that when I first went to disable them the various permission boxes all showed up no problem but when I went back to restore them the boxes would no longer display anymore.
That's good to know that I should be able to do it via 4EXT. Would also like to know if its possible via the phone itself too as my gf's Android doesn't have 4EXT.
Would it work if I copied the system/xbin/su file before disabling them, maybe store it on my PC, and copy it back again afterwards when I want the root reactivating? I'm thinking no because r/rw is turned off right?
Or if I just reflashed the root again from the PC to phone. Would that work?

I dont think you can get root back by fixing permissions. It is my understanding that root is a two part system. First is a binary and second is a program that interacts with the binary such as superuser or supersu. If you remove either part you lose root.
When I lost root I only lost it because I lost supersu. After losing supersu oil checked for root with root checker and it was lost. I tried replacing it but it didnt work. I had to flash a recovery that had root to get it back or re-root my phone. That is about the extent of my knowledge of it.

[Q] Help with recovery after failed ROM installation

So after 6 months of perfectly working NON rooted phone, I decided to root my Verizon Galaxy S3. I previously owned a Moto Droid 2 and rooted and had no problems ever. Unfortunately, within hours of a successful root, I made the mistake of downloading ROM manager (since it worked fine on my Droid 2) and tried installing the first listed AOKP custom ROM. It rebooted and did everything that was expected, until it just hung on the boot up screen for over an hour. I then decided to (for better or worse) pull the battery and just boot into recovery. Unfortunately, this brought me to a message from Verizon saying "you are doing bad things, bring your phone to Verizon" (more or less anyway). So I fixed that much by getting the factory image/reboot and installing via Odin. My problem now is it constantly keeps failing/closing android process every minute or so. I can't navigate it long enough to do anything before it fails again and takes me back to lock screen followed by home screen. When I boot to recovery, it says I have no files to restore either, but I KNOWWW for a fact I did a backup through CWM before I did ANYTHING involving any custom ROMs. PLEASE help me! Ask any and all related questions that will help you and I'll do my best to answer them.
Can you check your file system and see if your CWM folder has a backup? It should be Sdcard/CWM or extsdcard/CWM. If not, do you mind flashing another rom or that same rom?

2 questions: Which factory image did you use to restore (link to thread)? Did you change the default backup location in CWM (ie, did you backup to the external sd or the internal - internal is default)?
There is a file in both extsdcard and sdcard with clock work mod back up. I did manage to factory reset and re root, so phone is functional again, just with none of my apps or settings. I have a feeling I'm going to need to un root in order to re receive my JB update too?

Didn't unlock bootloader?
I don't know for sure. I unzipped SU plus bootloader file exactly as specified in forums/video. Had no problems until I tried installing that ROM through ROM manager. And forgive me for trying that. I hadn't rooted in over a year. But main problem now is just that I want to recover how my phone was ie settings and set up if possible.

That sounds about the right size for a backup. When you go into CWM and do the restore (or restore from external - which ever has that folder, you didn't say) it doesn't show a backup?
What version of CWM are you running?
It's version CWM6023touchvzw.tar.md5. And it's on the external. But no matter which option of restore I choose in the recovery boot, it says file not found.

Maybe after all that flashing and Odin-ing your recovery install got wanked, somehow.
Let's try this: it will re-install the latest CWM, clean and then let's see if it'll recognize your backups.
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
download the touch image for the d2vzw (or just click here)
put that in the root of your internal sd card.
Open up terminal emulator on your phone and type the following:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-d2vzw.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
reboot recovery
(partition 18 is your recovery partition)
That'll push the known good CWM to your recovery partition and boot you into it. It won't mess with any sort of data anywhere else on the phone.
Alright, thanks. I'll give this a try after I get back home from work.
