[Q] Any battery runtime improvemt suggestions/ideas - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hello Everybody
My mobile phone's battery runtime is not satisfactory to my needs.
I am in stock Gingerbread Firmware and uses Juice Defender beta.
I hate Task/Process Killers.
I have disabled 3G/GPS/Push and haven't installed Skype and haven't logged into Talk.
I would use my mobile phone for around 1hr calling, and around 2hrs heavy wifi browsing etc.
I get 1 day battery life for this usage scenario (Not 24hrs, around 15-17 hrs) .
I am not sure whether my expections are high.
I would regularly do full cycle recharge after my mobile phone turns off after battery drain.
I noticed one thing in my mobile phone, Cell Standby uses siginificant battery power
Google Nexus S and some other mobile phone's cell standby would be the lowest battery consumer.
Is it because of Baseband related bugs ?
Please share your ideas/strategies for improving the battery runtime performance.

Welcome to modern smart phones.

Both of these are a mistake. The stock GB firmware is terrible and so is Juice Defender.
I hate Task/Process Killers.
Awesome

This is close to the max you'll get for modern smart phone usage like this. This isn't that bad. My phone can last for days but that is because I tend to use Wi-Fi more than the cell radio and even then I don't use my phone directly all that much. With the cell radio on and using it for several hours the best I can do is 20+ hours and the worst is somewhere around 7-10.
I am not sure whether my expections are high.
They are.
I would regularly do full cycle recharge after my mobile phone turns off after battery drain.
This is a bad idea. You should usually charge from 25-30% up to 80-85%. Don't deep cycle your battery unless you're doing the first one or two charges.
I noticed one thing in my mobile phone, Cell Standby uses siginificant battery power
Your cell radio is always running, so it will always be at the top. If I understand it correctly the % is closer to how much of the time it has been running than how much battery it's actually used.
Google Nexus S and some other mobile phone's cell standby would be the lowest battery consumer.

Thanks for your quick reply.
If i can't expect more than one day for even casual usage, how can i play modern and powerful games in this so-called modern smart phones, by always connecting the mobile phone to the wall charger ?
Whatever casual things we do in a modern dual core smart phone can be done in single core smart phone, albeit for lot more time.
So, these so called modern smart phones exists for our occasional gaming needs and not for the frequent casual usage ?
Either android power management should improve vastly or the mobile phones should equipped with Gigantic batteries or backup power supply to enjoy the Modern Smart Phone experience. Period.

3 options:
1) Buy an extended life battery (probably the best option since you want to do some heavy gaming/browsing).
2) Flash custom rom and kernel. (finding the right combination can GREATLY improve your battery life)
3) Lower your expectations.
... or just buy a dedicated gaming device for the heavy gaming and use your phone for casual gaming.
Welcome to the world of smartphones.

So, are you saying that flash custom firmware can improve the battery life than using the stock Gingerbread ROM ?

Yes. On very casual usage, I can get 36 hours easily. (couple calls, couple texts, little bit of wifi)
I have zero widgets, and leave my data connection OFF unless actively using data.
On the other side of the house, if I play a physics-intensive game such as Angry Birds, I can burn through a battery in 4 hours.
As phburks stated, there are aftermarket items you can purchase to improve the life of your device. Even solar panels. Ha. I suggest running a custom ROM. I use the latest CM7 nightly and faux123's 0.4.1 kernel and am very satisfied.

I use the Mugen Power 4500mah battery. It adds quite a bit of bulk to my phone but the added battery life for me is worth it. I don't do a lot of gaming but I'm constantly browsing/texting/downloading/several phone calls/etc and I can easily go 48 hours with my heaviest usage. The longest I've stretched it is 60 hours and even that was with moderate usage.

There's a 3500 mah discussed in the accessories section that actually sounds pretty reliable and its only like $13. I already had the Mugen one by the time I found that thread lol. I probably woulda gone with the cheaper one if I'd known about it.

I have one in my phone right now.

Battery is absolutely garbage

Am I the only one?
I upgraded to a native android device from a modded HTC HD2 to hopefully have a longer battery experience.
This battery is absolutely trash. My 2 year old HTC HD2 running Sense Android Non-Native ran at almost exactly the same.
I tested my HTC HD2 side by side with a close friend who has an Evo 4g.. Both Devices still being HORRIBLE in battery life performed almost IDENTICAL.
HTC HD2 is TWO YEARS old, why is it so close in performance to our device..
I love the phone in general, it's snappy (once i removed all bloatware).. Boots fast, runs nice.. i have very few complaints about it.
But how does an 1100 MaH battery run the SAME as an 1600 MaH battery?
I thought technology is supposed to improve, but my non native android phone ran almost the same as this one. Took longer to restart/boot up, but general speed is the same, larger screen size.. similar settings, and same battery life. Pisses me off frankly.
That's how I felt. hopefully we will get rom's or gingerbread on this phone soon that will improve battery life. And by gingerbread I mean the leak from Samsung for the i9000. I've been reading reviews and it seems like it Greatly improved battery while speeding up the phone a lot.

I have to disagree. I've owned may android phones including the evo. This phone has the best battery life in my opinion. I can easily make it almost all day with use without charging
Sent from my DAMN Galaxy 4G¡!
Well like I said, i admittedly abuse the phone.. but I'm comparing to other phones getting equal abuse. It stands up about the same, better yes, but not by much.
If I'm barely using it however.. let's say, mainly just texting, yes it will last all day. But that never really happens.
I love how people admit that they "abuse" the phone all day and then complain that the battery life sucks. If you're going to use your phone that much, bring your usb cord. Or strap a battery pack to yourself and plug it in for "all day" use and abuse.
It's the screen. If you want the super amoled you have to put up with the battery.
What i don't understand is that why the Droid x which has similar specs to our phone can go up to 10 hours of continuous web browsing when our phone/vibrant can only go up to 4 according to tests. Is it because of the screen? If it is then that's just stupid.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
It was horrible for me at first, but I then realized the system has to calibrate the battery first. I am getting about 16-20 hours with moderate usage now, which is better than the G2 I had before.
My g2 can go up to 28 hours with light texting and 2 hours of web browsing through wifi and 10 minutes of calls (manual syncs and low brightness also). Once I use the gps and browse through hspa, it's a different story. My sister has a SGS4G and her battery seems to drain faster than mine.
Oh, and if I keep my phone charged for a while after reaching the 100% mark, it stays at 100% even after 1 hour of heavy browsing and watching videos. I think we should all just assume that the battery meters are inaccurate.
I use juice defender and put my brightness setting on auto and I can literally go all day with "abusing" my phone.

let the phone die, to the maximus. meaning once it turns off, turn on again until it doesnt turn on anymore. Now fully charge it, once again when fully charged restart the phone and charge it to 100 again. then let it die again, and full charge. should be fine then
i bought a 3500mah extended battery for my phone. the battery is designed to work with vibrant. it really made my life a lot easier.
I noticed if I set the phone to GSM only, battery lasts almost twice as long. If I'm on auto select (WCDMA/GSM), it lasts from 7AM till about 4PM.
But then again, I don't have a very good 3G/4G reception (or 2G connection for that matter), so my phone is probably working extra hard to find signal all day long.

Same here.
I used to only have dark wallpapers and take all the other extra steps for my battery to make it through the work day, and as soon as i got home i had to charge it.
I'm now running fireflies live wallpaper, abusing the phone a little more then what i used to, and i still have battery to spare, not by the time i get home, but by the time i go to bed!!
i also have installed bali. seems to do well, as said its all about the brightness.
My problem with this phone is that wifi uses way too much battery. I have it to turn off when phone is asleep but i'll have the phone at 100% with wifi on. Put it on sleep. 4 hours later. battery is at 65%.
If i have wifi turned off. Battery will be at 98%.

What can I do to increase battery life on my Android phone?

What can I do to get better battery life on my Droid? Battery life seems awful. Less than 15 hours or so on normal usage.
lower the backlight to as low as you can, turn off GPS, WiFi, sound, kill some processes, go to airplane mode, dont multitask.
is there any software just 1 click to do that ?
Try Juice Defender

What for buy the phone if you can't use all these features??!!
Ok, how can I better the battery life meanwhile I can enjoy the features of my droid?
For me, I keep wifi, sync, Bluetooth on 24/7. Then put my 3g to 2g only. Turn off GPS. Let android auto setting brightness. Under the moderated use (few hours of web browsing. Calls less then 30 mins. And half an hour games) it can last one and half days. I turn on GPS and 3G only if I needed. I think besides screen they are the biggest power hunger monsters. 2G is enough to sync your data. If you pre cache your maps. It's okay to use for navigation as well. Hopefully this can help.

Increase Time between Charges:
1. Switch the vibrate function off on your phone, using just the ring tone.
The vibrate function uses additional battery power. Keep the ring tone volume as low as possible.
2. Avoid using unnecessary features.
If you know it will be a while before your phone’s next charge, don’t use the camera or connect to the Internet. Flash photography can drain your battery especially quickly.
3. Turn off Bluetooth.
It will drain your battery very quickly.
4. Avoid using moving or animated pictures or videos for your background. Animated backgrounds will drain the battery faster.
Here are some tips to prolong the life of your battery:
1. Initialize a new battery.
New batteries should be fully charged before their first use to obtain maximum capacity.
2.Keep the battery cool.
Put the battery in the freezer or fridge. (I know it sounds weird...)
Your battery will last longest if used near room temperature, and nothing wears on a battery like extended exposure to high temperatures. While you can’t control the weather, you can avoid leaving your phone in a hot car or in direct sunlight, and you don’t have to carry your phone in your pocket, where your body heat will raise its temperature.
3.Clean the battery contacts on the battery and on the phone.

When I first got my Droid X, it wouldn't last a day. What I did was to FULLY discharge the battery and FULLY charge it (not using phone during charge) and and after about 4 cycles like this, I can get about 2 days 24x7 life on the battery.

That is very interesting. I think this is about Android needs time to learn what is the real capacity of the battery. What you stated actually happens when you flash a new rom. That's also why it usually take a few days to tell the battery consumption when a new fw released.

Just use your phone as you like, and when you go to sleep, put it on the charger, so you enjoy your phone the whole day
At least, that's my trick. I use my Desire S from 6.30 till 22.30 (when i'm awake), and when i go to bed, its around 20 percent on stock ROM.
Your ROM, kernel and radio can really affect your battery life, For example, when i'm on Cyanogenmod, with CM kernel, i can use my device two days, and on the stock Sense 3.0 ROM it lasts one day. Play with these three, and see what fits you best.

Why do Android battery life suck?

So far, I've owned 3 Android phone, and all of their battery sucked. I owned an Evo 4g, HTC Rezound, and I had 2 Galaxy S3's. Even with Extened battery, the battery won't last as long as an iPhone. And it doesn't stop here. It takes FOREVER to fully charge the battery only to find out that it gets depleted super fast. On the S3, I would be at 20% at the end of the school day, but with an iPhone, I end up around 60% with the same amount of use. The phones go up 1% after 5 minutes when plugged into a computer, and its annoying. I love Android with all my heart, but I can't deal with this problem. Anyone know of phone that has really good battery life (besides the MAXX)?
An iPhone's battery life is roughly the same in each iteration as a device from the Galaxy series. In fact it's been tested and the Galaxy S III lasted 6 hours and 55 minutes compared to the iPhone 5 which lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes. Both OS's implement battery management very well, and at the end of the day battery life is mainly dependent on user use. You can't expect an Android device to have numerous data hogging widgets as well as numerous background processes active, all while surfing the web with multiple windows open, and not drain just a little quicker than an iOS device that doesn't even utilize true multitasking. Please.
Also: It doesn't last as long as an iPhone "even with an extended battery?" GTFOH. Either your iPhone runs on nuclear material or you're full of sh**.
Why don't you use something like BetterBatteryStats and find out why the battery is being used ?
I get 3-4 hours of screen on time on my S3 with stock battery and kernel, but with some minimal battery-saving settings.
It used to be a lot worse - but I actually investigated and found out what was eating up the battery. I guess I could have just complained about it, but it was a lot faster to just work on finding a solution. I've been really impressed with how long my battery has been lasting lately - and it didn't take all that long to just read the BBS report and make changes.

In my words, its actually depend on your uses. Now a days we have 4"- 5" screen, where lots of processes are running in background. Using Dual Led Flash light for camera & having lots of Games, applications & files. We were used to have phone like NOKIA & BB. Where we just clicked over a button & thats all. But now when You click on screen, whole screen has to be work.
But yes, Few companies has taken it hard & Provided battery like MOTO MAXX.. also few have kernel bugs. So, it totally depend on you buddy, how you take it. Use data connectivity less & check whether your phone is going to Deep sleep / other name as per phone is going or not.
Be realistic with the brightness, keep it on auto don't run it at 100%. Try different ROMs with tweaks. Adjust settings with kernels for a faster battery recharge. Your options are infinte. Maybe android isn't for you.

There's an official Google statement that wiping batterie stats won't improve your battery life.
Wiping the stats forces android to recalibrate and calculate the battery stats.

Do you mean the time for one or both batteries ?
I get 3-4 on stock battery - but I always have my screen on the lowest brightness - and sometimes lower (using the Screen Filter app). I'm inside most of the time, so I don't need a very bright screen.
The only time I really lose battery like crazy is if I'm playing Ingress - because then I need to turn the brightness up and GPS is constantly updating so it's not exactly unexpected.

[Q]Nexus 5 Battery life

Hi All,
I am gonna get my Nexus 5 ( 32GB Variant ) in about 2 weeks and I've done extensive research on numerous reviews and found out that the battery life is mediocre ( in GSM Arena it says 40H on the endurance test )
Is this battery life issue easy to get over with by installing custom roms?
Thanks alot!

From my experience, i get great battery life on mine running stock.
Sometimes I reboot because of a qcom-camera-something-like-that bug draining battery or whatever it is but no serious deal breaker
I had one time 1 day 14h @ 44% with light usage, wifi turned. Most of the time i do play a lot, read mangas, have whatsapp, hangout, facebook, snapchat, instagram and all these apps installed pushing notifications, It still gets me through the day easily.
I was worried about the battery when i bought it but keep in mind, even if the LG G2 has 3000 mah, it has to run all LG services and tricks like "double tap to wake up", this device is PURE Google. See it like an enormous engine with only wheels, no fancy sh*ts, it's up to you if you want to make it lightweight or heavy as ...
Anyway if you're still concerned about the battery life, get a wireless charger for 40 bucks and put it where you stay the most (desktop at work/next to you computer). You will just have to lay it down to make it charge with no efforts

I'm guessing you had the screen brightness set to its lowest.
Battery life is what you make of it. I can make my phone last 8 hours or a day and a half.
I feel like there are over a hundred threads inquiring about battery life. At least two a week.

Battery Life Analysis

So I want to know if you all have similar experiences..
I have Galaxy S9+ 128 GB Exynos Version - ALL STOCK
The screen on continuous use battery consumption is very good... it drains 13.5-14.5% per hour at max with location, 4G on.... Which means it can get to around 7 Hrs of Screen-on time easily.... even more if we use low powered media apps like youtube, netflix etc....
However, the screen off battery drain is relatively high...
A standard day has around 10-12 hours of standby time when you are out and moving with 4G on all the time and 1-2 hours of music... and in that time the might drain up to 35%+.... Limiting the screen-on time to around 4:30 hours... The deep sleep percentage of the total screen off time is around 65% which is no so great....
This is without using Power saving modes...
So the battery life gets around 7/10 for me.... It is good enough and for 90% of the days it will last the full day.... just not as comfortably as I might have hoped..
On my Galaxy S6 I used apps like Forcedoze, turned off sync, location, 4G, haptic feedback, unused apps, and I could squeeze livable battery life out of it... I am sure that if I did the same with the S9 the phone would have 2 day battery life.... but the out of the box battery life of the phone is average...
So I recommend turning off 4G when not in use and use Power saving mode once you hit 35%.... this way you can easily get through the longest days on a single charge....
The phone needs improvement to its stand by time....

I think that a lot has been said about this topic, and in the end, the user is the only one to blame for the battery life, because there are a lot of things that can impact battery: location, apps, usage, signal, etc.
Is hard to do an objective and good analysis of battery life, because each user will put their own subjective thoughts. For me battery can be great, and for others can be awful.
Is true that 4G will consume more battery, but only if you are in an area when signal is weak, otherwise, in most cases it will have the same drain or even less, because with faster speed, the modem works less and the impact is less as well in battery.
Power saving mode is going to save you some juice in case you cap all the options to the minimum, but honestly, who wants to run an S9+ with an HD resolution?, and the brightness and CPU cap don't give you much more battery either, and I found it stops the sync of some apps, but not others.
I think that the only real way to improve your battery is to properly configure your device, set the proper permissions for every setting and app, and then use the "Energy Monitor" built in app to let which apps can be running in background and which don't. Doing this will improve battery by miles.

The whole thing has to be intuitive though... having to tweak 200 settings in the phone to get better experience is not part of the experience... experience is the stock default usage with some minimal tweaking... This is the reliable battery life I can get without breaking any service in the phone because I might have to analyze the effects of every option I change or turn off..

This is the reliable battery life I can get without breaking any service in the phone because I might have to analyze the effects of every option I change or turn off..

Is partially true what you say: if you get a Samsung, is because you know you will have all those options and most probably you will have to make the proper changes. We all know that Samsung phones usually offer ton of features and options, but if you don't configure them, probably they will mess a little the battery because most of them will come enabled and will have an impact in battery life.
On the other hand, if you want just the basics and a simple experience, you should stick with Android stock or closer.
Is like buying a Ferrari, but then complain about fuel consumption.

Now with that said, I think Samsung puts an unrealistic expectation on the battery and continues to misinform users with fake data. They should be a bit more realistic, really, 20 hours of Video Playback? They forget to tell you that is more than likely at the lowest resolution, with the screen brightness turned all the way down, with the device in airplane mode.
I don't think this phone will get anywhere near those battery hours. I also think we should expect at least 1 full day of HEAVY use. This is a flagship phone.
Now... All said and done... I get decent battery life, I cant complain. However, I do think it should get better battery life. This cost as much as my Dell Gaming Laptop.

Just disable everything what you don't use and set up the battery monitor for your apps and you will be good.

Well, car manufacturers do the same when they advertised they cars to give 5L/100Km, but we all know that in order to achieve those, you should drive in very specific conditions. The same applies here as well.
And yes, I also have great battery life in my S9+ and I can't complain at all.

These numbers are lab tests under controlled conditions... by no way they represent real life usage...
My S9+ has had an appalling battery life and i have no clue what to do about it.
Apologies for the second post. It was done by mistake and now i can't remove it ...
What is really bad is the network reception.
Most time of the day I have bad or almost no coverage.
No matter what phone I had had they all had average battery life.
So for anyone who has bad battery life take a look at this.
But this is just one cause.
I've got my S9+ for about a week now. Snapdragon version with dual SIM.
So far I finding the battery life a little disappointing. Using betterbatterylife with the ADB commands I getting around 4,5 ~ 5 % / h of very light use (essentially stand by).
I've turned everything off, from Google Assistant to bixby to others Samsung services and still I think it's drainibg too fast.

Can't agree more. Samsung has been consistently misinformative about battery endurance data since the first gen Galaxy S I9000 . "S" series never had good batterylife anyways.(keeping sweet Exynos S7 Edge aside when new).
