Question about b70 and rooting - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

today I purchased a transformer from micro center, serial b70kas203, build us_epad-8.4.4.11-20110711. I haven't been home yet to try rooting, but sounds like it most likely has sbk_v2. I would like to be able to root when available, but what I am wondering is if its ok to do any ota updates? Or will doing ota updates further prevent me from rooting?

It really depends on what Asus decides they want to do security-wise. I know with the Evo a lot of people took certain OTAs and ended up making their phone un-rootable. In my experience, it's best to let the OTA ride for a couple of days and check back here or other dev hotspots to see if anybody is having trouble with them. You can always wait a little while for an update, and it's safer to have somebody else who isn't as wise do the testing.

well how about asking this way, can I safely update mine which has 3.1 to most recent ota? I too have an evo and know about those crippling updates, and i'm wondering if its safe for me to hook my transformer up to wifi and accept updates to 3.2.

I think the latest updates to tf101 has no impact on whether you can root or not later on. If your tf has sbk1 then you can root, but if it has sbk2, then no go at the moment. So fire away, let the fota do its thing, then try to root afterwards when the updates are finished.

Thank you

OTA Available after activation

Did anyone besides be get notified of an OTA after they activated their T-Bolt? Did you install it? I didn't for fear it will ruin our current root exploit even though it's not permaroot.
I didn't get it yet, I wish I did though, don't want anything to be wrong if I can't get OTA updates. Hopefully I'll get it later today.
Update: Tried to manually update, phone said I had the latest software.
you can go to settings and check for update.
Crap i just did it again and now it says i don't have one.
I have not been notified but I was told to expect one in the next few days. I was told it contains the fixes for battery life issues.

3.1 Update... am I missing something?

I heard that the 3.1 update is out for the transformer but I am not seeing it as an available update.... do I have to manually do this or should the tablet see it as an update and automatically update?

They're pushing it out in waves, so far it seems like it's mainly been Asia. You can, however, find and download the update yourself from the internet and initiate the update yourself if you care that much/search a little around the internet. I'll try to find the link that I used

This is probably the wrong forum for this post though. This would probably be better posted in Transformer General or Transformer Development
I received the transformer yesterday afternoon and I got the update this morning when I awoke. You should receive it this morning if you have not already

[Q] Questions about rooting, should I?

Hi, if my typing is a little off i appologize, im on my tablet.
I have had two android phones, moto droid and moto droid 3. I justgot a eee pad and have never had a need to root my device. Now though, i want netflix on my tablet soim considering rooting. I am very tech savvy but i have some questions before i root. I love the stock ui, i dont want to change anything except to get netflix, whats the best rom for me, and what apps should i get for it? Or is there a non-root solution for netflix?
Thanks, sharf
Hi!
I have no idea about netflix, but you can root your TF and keep your stock ROM. It's not necessary to change the ROM if you want to root your TF and you are happy with the stock ROM.
Regards.
If you are happy not being able to get OTA official updates from ASUS anymore, and think rooting the tablet purely for 1 app is worth it, go ahead.
Me, I like OTA updates - and dont want to be forced to install custom roms for the rest of its life if unrooting doesnt work like it doesnt for certain peoples tablets.

I just called netflix, and the guy said the xoom and transformer are on the list for the next update coming out in "the next month or so" since i dont have netflix yet anyway, i think i'll stick to stock and wait for netflix to update.
Thanks guys, sharf
For netflix to work, you need to be rooted. The fix to get it working makes some modifications to files in a area that is protected. When you root it, it gets unprotected(giving read/write access).

New firmware for 3113...

Anyone have thoughts on what the new firmware is for the P3113? I just got an alert on my rooted device that I have a new firmware upgrade.
another useless update that I don't need?
I just checked for an update on my tablet and there doesn't seem to be one available. But if there is soon I will let you know of any obvious changes.

Thanks! I appreciate it.
You can download it here http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-P3113
Just not sure if it's worth it, and what will happen since I am rooted. It's not a full upgrade to JB which I know I would need to do an FDR for, but just a minor update (which could be leading to JB later on down the road, there have been 2 updated in the last 30ish days, thats usually a good sign, from past device experiences at least lol).
Perhaps HDMI support and/or UMS support for the external sd card? I can dream, can't I...
Dreams do come true, they can happen to you...

I love your dreams, and I share those dreams with you too. Let me know if I should buy a lotto ticket, since it would be a nice lucky day.
If it where HDMI support I would suspect we would see an adapter available on Samsung's website for this tablet. Since there is none I'm guessing its something more mundane. However my tab is charging up now in preparation of the update and will let you know as soon as I can.
So I installed the update and right off the bat nothing jumped out at all lol. So I went through to find changes and kinda came up with nothing. I could probably do some more serious digging to find what has been changed. If you have anything you want me to test with it I will just let me know.
App to SD?

That would be the only thing I could want to see to be honest since nothing else has lol. I think it might be a primer update to go to JB in the next month or 2, which means I'll have to go back and update through since I am rooted and shouldn't try to update till unrooted.
Then again I could be 100% wrong, so don't pin hopes on my theory lol.

[Q] JB update but keep ICS bootloader

Dear community
Got my TF300TG a day yesterday and I'm hardcore trying to figure out, how Asus' android world works. I know old htc, new htc, motorola and samsung but Asus is new to me. I'm happy they didnt go overboard with their customisation if the OS, but I'm thoroughly angrx about the whole bootloader story. But who isnt, so...
From what I figured out till now is that the TG is obviously quite a different device than the T and not the same with simply a added gsm unit. Stuff is not simply interchangeable. I also learnt that the JB bootloader makes things a lot more difficult. Since my tablet came with some ICS (havent yet got asus' version naming scheme, but the build ends with .22 so I figure thats what younguys are referring to with .30, .40 etc) and I'd like to get the added niceness of JB but avoid the bootloader update, I wonder if that is possible. Maybe strip an update package from the updater component and flash it. Or so.
Oh, and I'm not yet unlocked, I'm a flashaholic on my smartphones and a CM addict, but because of asus tight assed warrqnty policy I didnt dare to unlock the tablet till now. I'll eventually get to it, probably.
Thanks in advance.

So I guess no one ever tried? Gnaa...
Well then, hypothetically, taking stuff out of the update.zip will break it's sign, so trying to do this very cheap by just removing stuff from the update package wont work, a little more sophistication is needed. Resigning the zip also wont work, we dont have asus keys. And maybe or possibly definitely, I havent searched, the ICS bootloader wont even load JB. The other way round I believe I can remember, the kernel throws a kernel panic but thats irrelevant, its the ICS bootloader and JB system I'm interested in...
So if anybody could shed some light on my issue, highly appreciated of course.
