I haven't had any success obtaining temp root using visionary/z4. I'm assuming this is because my phone has the most recent updates. I then found this thread Working EVO Shift Temp Root for 2.3.3 Newest OTA [8/04/2011], and was wondering if there would be any issues obtaining temp root via the linked method and then using visionary/z4 to perma root the phone.
I just don't want to have any issues with visionary/z4 while attempting to perma root with temp root access. Also both visionary/z4 froze when trying to get temp root.
I later found this as well [Win32 Tool]GUI Root with Check and Recovery! and was wondering if this program would be fine to use to root my updated shift.
Thanks for your time.
Temp root is all thats available to shifts running 2.3.3... Hopefully perm root is being worked on "behind the scenes".

Why would you doubt that?

Please place all of your discussions about obtaining root on the Evo Shift here.
Temp root:Temporary root can be acheived a number of ways on the shift the easiest being either z4root app or the visionary plus root app.
Z4root:
download here and install as you would any other apk
open the app and hit temporary root
let it run till you are notified of its success
you now have temporary root!!
*Note you have to reapply z4 each time you reboot your phone
Visionary:
full instructions and the link to visionary can be found here. http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
IMPORTANT NOTE!
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA UPDATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they patched the root exploit on the desire z when they updated you can most definitely expect them to do the same for the shift so please for that sake of everybody being able to get proper root do not accept any updates unless further notified!!!
unless you just dont care about root that is.....
so far, we got a temporary root.
No point in trying unrevoked as it scans for the device name and shows
"sorry, the device 'speedy' is not suppored" (paraphrasing)
wish i knew alittle more about this.
You can get to hboot by Holding down the vol down while powering on
Also in a previous thread bubby323 requested a dump of /system and dnalevelc obliged:
* http://www.digglesworth.net/evoshift/system.7z
In another forum (androidcentral) someone noted that an app called VISIONary works to auto temp-root the Shift upon boot.
* http://android.modaco.com/content/h...m/320722/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
Edit: Also there's code to temp root the G2 using a different exploit below. I haven't attempted to run it on my Shift. Possibly not relevant since it has a newer version but could be if an update is pushed to the Shift:
* https://github.com/tmzt/g2root-kmod/tree/scotty2/scotty2/psneuter
got the shift today. MAN this thing is fast! i'd love to see unrevoked release a small update that supports the shift. otherwise i can do it the long way but i can't wait to see the scores once i get a custom ROM on it.
Visonary does work, I turned on temproot on boot and then i pressed temproot now and it rebooted the phone. The phone was either taking its time or got stuck on the 4G for 2-3 mins so I pulled the battery and started the phone up again. I installed connectbot and typed su and got a #. Tried the reboot command and it wouldn't let me so I went into root explorer and it prompted the su app, gave it permission and started hacking away at bloatware..... no luck, it still came back from the grave :\
I successfully Temp rooted with z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953) and I couldnt get the download off the market so I just went to 4shared.com and searched z4root and picked up 1.3.0 which is the latest version....
It worked great and I used Titanium back up and a screen shot app that both needed root.
does anyone think the rageagainstthecage exploit will work on this? i assume people are working on it? cause if it does, that means unrevoked3 could possibly release a new version with shift support, right? since unrevoked is just an automated rageagainstthecage, right?
edit: i mean, for permanent root, S-OFF.

Z4Root temp root was a success but SU is telling me to upgrade by going into recovery, How do I go about this? I can't get any permissions for Rom Manager, Titanium, BusyBox, Etc...

Nevermind, figured it out. I accidentally rebooted, therefore, I lost root...

yes, the rage exploit is what works and is what z4root uses. However I couldn't get the actual binary to work from the CLI using adb.
Just curious--with this temp root, will the wireless tether app work? At least until the phone is restarted. I use that app quite a bit with my Hero, to get on the sites blocked at work on my ipad

blocked at work (thus the wifi tether needed )
what's it say? lol
Yes we finally got a forum
But on to the good stuff and not so good stuff
Even though we only have temp root partitions on the shift can be flashed using dd I won't go into exactly how to do it till I get home because the commands have to be EXACT!!!! Or u risk bricking your phone... I've had to ruu a couple times now
O btw the ruu that was previously leaked appears to be exactly what was released on the shift.

Great tip. It's just a matter of time now...
First off, sorry for asking a noobish question. I know it was said somewhere but for some reason I can't find it.
But I remember sometime that if you accepted an update, you couldn't temp/perm root. Is this still true?
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Last I heard was that they sent an update out on a different model phone that stopped the exploit and that they would likely do it to the shift soon. Dunno if they ever did. If you updated your then try and see if temp root works and you'll know for sure. Otherwise I wouldn't except any updates from them if you're wanting to root.
Confirmed
I'm fully OTA updated, and the temp root still works via visionary

You can update your data profile and PRL with no problem. You just don't want to accept any firmware updates which there haven't been any yet.

So i was on the 'new way to root' and i went to download the so called one click root..but i couldn't even finish downloading the file halfway before my anti-virus quarantine warning popped up saying "Android/Exploit.RageCage.A Trojan..anyone else get this while trying to download the file? my firefox's WOT rating thing said its a poor site and not to trust it...i've rooted my HTC HD2 but a buddy of mine has the MT4G and i thought i could just do a one click type for his..but i guess i might have to do it the old fashioned step by step DIY..

There are NO one click root options for the MyTouchHD. You must do it one of the ways posted in the development section. I believe Option94 on here once went to try it [create a one click root process] and and it wouldn't work correctly.
Thanks...thats what i thought..well his method was "semi-automated" you still had to run commands via terminal, but the fact my anti-virus came up with a trojan alert is what worried me, but i'll just root his MT4G the step by step way!

No problem this phone is a breeze to root. i've personally tried every method out there and had success every time.
There is a one click root method.. Via visionary from modaco.. All you have to do is turn s-off manually.
Happy rooting
Antivirus software will occasionally flag root packages as virii because, well, they ARE exploits. Frankly, as long as you're getting it from here or another reputable site, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well you still have to push the .sh files but I'd say visionary is definitely the easiest.

VISIONary is not a true rooting tool. Root your phone with it then turn your phone off. See what happens.
VISIONary will give you temp root so you can permaroot it.
to the N'th degree you are correct, in the real world not so much.
Visionary has a permaroot option.... never used it, I temp root then use root.sh... takes like 2 seconds...

Rooting allows you to have permanent SU access to the ~/system files. VISIONary nor the Permaroot button allow you to do this. Permaroot your phone, try to flash anything to the /system file bank. It will not stick. It's simply just a "rooting" tool to help you gain permanent access to those file via turning the security protocol off. as soon as you turn off the phone everything goes back to normal.
I'm not interested in changing ROM on desire s.
Things I care more is that whether i could use apps that need root permission.
I am informed that only way to turn S-ON to S-OFF is XTC Clip.
so i'm wondering if there is a way to root without S-OFF?
Thanks.
Only temp root with Gingerbreak currently

I searched Gingerbreak
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045118&highlight=gingerbreak
saying worked only on S-OFF
It does work on S-ON also, but its only temporary and its usefulness is limited

I want to ask can i use MarketEnabler with that temp. root? And does it affects devices warranty?
no u can't cause market is force closing then and the effect of marketenabler will be killed after a reboot
Don't try Gingerbreak if you're on S-ON. It's useless altogether. Everything was force closing.
We'll have to wait what HTC's workaround on lock bootloaders or AlphaRevs has in store.
Temp root access has been achieved by some but seems to be unstable or at least unreliable.
Agree with previous poster, AlpharevX looks promising for a way forward to achieving superuser status & maybe a permanent software S-Off.

No there is no way to perm Root as of yet.
okay if you temp root what does it allow you to do?
Not a lot currently. Cannot flash custom Roms. You can make certain changes, but when you reboot you have to start over. You must Temp Root again.
