OK, I've seen a few times now linux installers for android... My curious besides the obvious, what exactly is this? I mean if i download say, redhat or ubuntu... Will it be similar to the desktop experience? Or is there less of a GUI? I'm curious and don't want to flash until I know it's not gonna murder my phone.

Its similar to the desktop experience... Follow the instructions to a "T" and it should work... I have never done it but i know guys that have and its pretty slick.

Does the touch screen work with Ubuntu? On-screen keypad etc.?
Sent from my PG06100 using xda premium
I have read of people that have evos that dual boot ubuntu, so Im assuming it has an onscreen keyboard.

Lol. Smartass. I'm looking for a little more Ubuntu like UI. But thanks for the humor.

Hello
Does anybody now if i can somehow rip the boatloader and convert it into an .wmv file to set is as desktop background in windows 7 combined with dreamscene enabler?
Would be great because i have a 50 inch plasma and to prevent burning in i use dreamscene and the boatloader ICS seems great as dreamscene.
Thanks
Bouke
I saw it somewhere on the net, however the quality was rather low.If you find one that looks good ***** it here please.

I know right... Just looked over the last thing I posted and it had a couple of stupid things in it (not nearly that silly) and it makes you wonder about the algorithms

Kinda like a dual boot in pc having xp and win7

Yes, there was a thread about multiple boot ROM in devi section. Search!

No need to jump down their throat, especially when that thread addresses having two options to boot from, not really the same thing this guy was asking

I'm just saying that will be cool having a cm7 rom and switching to ics with out flashing or cwm recovery every time

I believe this is what he was referring to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617055&highlight=dual+boot
I have dual boot on my laptop. I have to restart to boot into ubuntu though, his question seems more like, can you store two os in ram and switch between them. That would be sweet. Especially now that I know about that swapper program that lets you built a virtual ram partion on your ultra class 10 32gig sd : )

This works great on computers but on devices it would be kind of pointless not to mention the amount of memory you would need...still seems cool but I can't imagine the benefits...

It was the same thing he was asking, the other (I give him the benefit of the doubt) thing he also know isn't the best way for a phone ram, yet.

Hi!!! I am looking for a ROM or theme that is stable that looks just like windows 8. I like the look of them, just hate the windows phones!! Does anyone know where I can find that?
Thanks!

There should be an option to show the bar. Have you tried launcher7?

This is your best bet for a Windows Phone-like experience on an Android phone. It's actually kind of neat. For a minute or two.
But if you prefer the WP environment, just hunt through the launchers til a good one stands out. Also, for this I'd stick with an ICS rom for the time being.
Is there a windows phone rom for the vzw galaxy s3 available?

Heavily encrypted? It may be closed-source but its not like the OS is completely locked. Look at the HD2

I'm no fan of windows mobile but it would be pretty cool to boot it up, including iOS but the fact is the source is closed on both os's so it won't be happening

Its not up to you whether someone wants to run windows 8 on their android phone. I know it wouldn't be possible but I would love to try it on the S3. Personally I prefer flashing different os's instead of ROMs. Roms can only change so much.
And yes this should be in q&a.

The hd2 was a windows phone.. Its mostly a copyright and license issue.. You'll never see a windows ROM on an android phone, only vice versa.. There was a big discussion back in the day about this when I was on the Raphael forums.. Microsoft surprisingly looks at this stuff
On a side note there is a win 7/8 launcher in the play store.. It looks pretty decent too

Yes it would be very cool; if only from a novelty standpoint. But it isn't going to happen for many reasons including hardware, licensing, IP, and the DMCA and its chilling effect upon research in a legal gray-area.
Not really a big deal but it would be cool to see on our skyrocket. Our developers are so awesome so it wouldn't surprise me to see it. Getting it on nexus 7 and would love to have it on both.

Honestly probably not; and I think it's a gimmick at the moment. A phone entirely controlled by gestures? Sounds great in theory, but not great in practice
I guess I'll find out soon enough on my nexus 7.

It gets open sourced on the 21st so anyone can take a shot at porting it.

one word: BB10, blackbery's new os is entirely gesture drive
but we don't have enough devs for a port of something like this, its massive... I truly believe that unless a device with similar chip set/CPU gets it we likely won't. Don't get me wrong our devs are great, just few
Would be nice, as would Firefox OS but i'm more hot for Ubuntu for Android as that would finally rid me of having a technically unnecessary pc
I use a gesture based OS on my blackberry playbook daily. It is incredibly smooth when done correctly. If Ubuntu does it correctly, then I wouldn't mind having it ported. If it's done badly, then it just wouldn't be worth it.

True, this leads me to believe it won't be as hard as people are thinking to get this to build yes it will involve a lot of work but I'm not thinking its going to be some herculean task.

I was reading it and cannocal says it's supposed to be easy to port. I just hope our phone will be able to run it smoothly. It should but I guess we'll just have to find out.

Working on porting it now actually if git servers ever decide to sync.
I hope it's easy to do. I love android but I've always wanted to try a different operating system. Not gonna make it permanent but it'd be cool to use sometimes. Anyone know if you can back it up with recovery and restore it later? I'll ask over in the nexus 7 forums as well.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
You can if you make a flashable zip. Installing via bootstrapper deletes everything iirc.
Cannocal has already made a flashable zip for the nexus devices. You have to fastboot flash a .img file.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Someone in the n7 forums said you can backup and restore with cwm.
