Flash radio w/o a pc? - HTC Inspire 4G

Ok guys. I was wanting to flash a radio onto my inspire to run with virtuous Unity 2.35. I asked around here & I was told NOT to flash a radio w/o a pc using bootloader & was also told it was perfectly safe. Even caused an argument between the two. So, is it safe to flash a radio w/o a pc & adb or not? Hoping not to start another argument. Ha! Thanks all! :')
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

Yes. It has to be in a flashable .zip that's titled exactly PD98IMG.zip, placed on the root(not in a folder) of the sd and done from HBOOT(Volume Down+Power buttons from being off).
This is the preferred method but don't forget the obligatory "check the md5" after it has been placed on the sd before the flash attempt. ManD5 is a good app to do this w/ and can be dl'ed from Market.
Tx

Yessir, I've got the manD5 app. I'd never flash anything anymore w/o checking that. Although I did my 1st few flashes starting out. And had problems, imagine that! Thanks for the reply. I've never flashed a radio before but that's what I've always heard. Now what about the RIL? Sometimes I hear bout both of em together & sometimes not...
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

Safest way is straight from the phone:
Download a PD98IMG.zip from the radio thread and place in the root directory (not in a folder) of your SD card.
Verify the md5 (open Terminal Emulator, type "md5sum /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip").
Reboot into Bootloader, and apply the new radio.
Reboot phone and enjoy!

Flash radio, boot, reboot to CWM and flash the ril from there. You will possibly have undesirable battery/reception...at first. Wait at least 48hrs before making any changes as the radio/ril seems to have a settling period before you'll see optimal/realistic results. I know that sounds odd but it's how it works.

Ok, sweet. I've always kept terminal emmulator on my phone in case i ever need it but never have. So that's it, put it in the root of sd, type that in emmulator & then HBOOT from there? How come ur the first one tellin me bout doing it thru emmulator? Thanks so much for the input

Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

Oh wait. Nevermind. I see ril doesn't come in the zip. So when I download this, I should be downloading a radio AND an ril? Verify MD5, flash radio, boot, then reboot back into CWMR & flash the RIL? Do I got that right?

If you still want to flash a different radio and RIL, then You've pretty much got it down pat. Yes, download both the radio and the matching RIL for that radio. Verify MD5's for both the radio zip and the RIL zip once they're on the root of your sd card. If you have good matches, you're all set to begin. Don't forget to flash the radio from HBOOT (power down the phone, then power back up by holding Vol-down + Power, then let off Power while still holding Vol-down for an extra second or two and let off), HBOOT will find the PD98IMG.zip and when prompted to upgrade, press Vol-up to accept and let it do its thing. The radio will flash and you'll reboot the phone. Once you boot back up, reboot to Recovery, then mount /system and flash the RIL. After you flash the RIL, reboot the phone and you're done.
EDIT: I always recommend that once you flash any file that is in PD98IMG.zip format, don't forget to either rename the file if you're keeping it on your sd card, or just simply delete it. The reason for this is in the event that things go south and you need to get back into HBOOT, you won't have a forgotten-about PD98IMG.zip file trying to apply when you're trying to cure a bootloop

Right on, u da man Dyne! That's what I was needin. The whole process. Now I'm comfortable doing it. Thanks alot man. Fixin to download em now! :') I'll be sure to "thank" u when I'm not on the app :')

No problem I remember the first time I flashed a radio...... kept thinking I was going to blow something up, lol. As long as your MD5's match up, (just like prior to flashing anything), then half the battle is already won. Just don't forget to let your radio and RIL combo "settle in" for about a day or two before determining if you're getting data speeds that are to your liking

Just updated to newer RIL (radio drivers)

I didn't want to change the radio firmware because its the firmware that came with the inspire 26.06.04.06_M. I updated RIL and afterwards the GPS gets a very solid lock fast 9 points. I now get 5 bars, I was getting 3 and the calls are more clear.
Please see this link here. I booted to recovery mounted /system and then ran the zip file update. Rebooted twice (I know what is the deal with the twice factor?) And, everything works great now.
I figure that updating to newer drivers is a lot safer than updating the radio firmware and I was correct.

should we flash the RIL you posted if we are on gingerbread or froyo? Does it matter?? I assume its safe with any gingerbread rom since you are running one...
and to the others...all you really need from that post is the install steps, which couldn't be any easier to understand:

Installation: (Tks to siedkins )
1. Reboot into recovery mode
2. Full nandroid back up
3. Select flash from SD card - select radio
4. Should get a notification to reboot to apply the radio flash
5. Once rebooted it will automatically take you back into recovery mode
6. Mount "/system"
7. Select flash from SD card - select RIL
8. Reboot once that has flashed and cross your fingers !!!

choosing a radio is really by preference so the best advice i can give you is to experiment with a couple of radio's till you find 1 that works well for you thats what i did
it wouldn't make no sense for me to tell you to flash this radio or that radio because some radio's may work good for some & not for others ya digg
I meant no point of flashing a stock rom 2.2.1 radio when I'm using gingerbread eh?

This might be an easier way for some of you to do this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061712
This has a .zip you download that will include 3 files. The new Radio, already in a bootloader ready PD98IMG.zip file, a file called id10ts_ATT_Custom_ROM_Speed_Booster.zip (which is actually just the new RILs and the Prop Editor app (which can be removed) which is CWM flashable, the 3rd file (telephony.db) will not be needed for this process
Put these 2 files on your SD, boot to bootloader and install radio. Boot to Recovery and flash RIL. Done
On a side note - I have not been able to get GPS to lock for the life of me on the last 3 or 4 ROM/Radio combinations I've had installed. I've tried every single fix on these forums and nothing seemed to work. I was most recently running Android Revolution 5.1.3 (Gingerbread ROM) with the recommended GB radio. I flashed this new ATT radio, flashed the RIL, flashed the radio again, flashed the RIL again, and I appear to have GPS back. Finally.

phone stuck in hboot

So my phone is in hboot... it's s-off for sure.. I have flashed many roms and whatnot with no issues. So I reboot my phone today, and it boots to hboot screen.
I've tried to get it to go past but nada. It checks for SD card then i can't select recovery or anything..
Also I thought I got an ATT stock img, was just going to try to redo it or whatnot, put that on roo, and it gets stuck parsing..
Any help would be appriciated.
Also... It's almost like the volume down is stuck on, because it seems to function and then won't let me move after it scans for SD IMG.
Did it just reboot into hboot on its own or did you put a pd98img on it and now it is stuck?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
If you have an image on card do the following. Take out sd. Boot into hboot. Scroll down to recovery but don't press. Put sd back in and then select recovery. If there is a pd98img it won't let you do anything except flash the image. If its corrupt than it won't do anything.
Always remove pd98img from card after using. Hboot menu is inaccessible with a pd98img on sd card.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Took SD card out.. Still booting to that hboot ya know with the fastboot, recovery, simlock, ect.
Can't move on the menu once booted.
And it got stuck on htc sense. Basically pulled battery then my phone had a bad day.
Like gizmoe said pd98img file will cause like 90% of boot loop
Or if you have a card reader just use that to delete the pd98 file
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
So my phone won't boot even with the SD card not in it... and it happened before I put that img on the root.
You've got to have an IMG on there. Find a way to delete it and you'll be good.

Did you try putting card back in before moving through hboot menu? Just leave it out while entering hboot and it will skip the file check and then put sd back in. Then try to make a selection.

Why don't you just get a SD reader, delete the IMG and move on? AT&T will notice the S-Off and won't fix it. The Service Center will.

They will definitely notice and will not honor your warranty. Sounds like hboot became corrupt somehow. If you have a card reader you could try using genepooles s-on tool. You might still be able to run a pd98img. That way you will be s-on and can send it in.

so I'm still playing with it... It looks like it gets stuck on parsing, then I can hit down to cancel, but thatssss about it.
so I fixed it... the method for this fix is quite complex but it worked for me.
1. Got an otterbox.
2. Enclosed phone in otterbox.
3. Got really ticked off and threw the phone at the wall.
4. Now it's working .
Really I think the issue was with the volume down key, and me chunking the phone must have rattled something right.. If only I could get duct tape involved somewhere this would truely be a legit fix.
Also thanks the people that replied really did reach out to help.. Cheers mates!
quick reply on this.. so the volume key is still a factor in this thing... Due to this I my phone is booting in a "Safe Mode" so I'm going to see what options I have to put it in an S-ON and install AT&T stock rom,,, doing this I would hope the engineers that diagnose the phones won't see the previous root.
So if anyone has any suggestions while I navigate the boards for a s-on / AT&T stock rom let me know...
Only hiccup I might meet is actually getting the img zip to load to actually flash the device,, I'm thinking the S-ON is the most important thing however.
Here is a link to a pd98img to put on sd card that will do the unroot process. It's your best bet. s on pd98img

a few days ago I had a problem with my bootloader it took about 20min to start But I could solve it with this method:
"Managed to solve the delay after booting by Following These steps:
download http://tinyurl.com/6fkvepx
unzip-HBFX.zip PD98IMG
installer using busybox
turn on usb debugging
adb push hboot.nb0 / data/local/tmp/hboot.nb0
adb shell
md5sum / data/local/tmp/hboot.nb0
dd if = / data/local/tmp/hboot.nb0 of = / dev/block/mmcblk0p18
md5sum / dev/block/mmcblk0p18
exit
adb reboot "
That might damaged in any way?
And yes, i`m wiping.
I don't think so; everything you pushed should be formatted when you wipe and overwritten when you install. I don't want to say it but you could have a bootloader issue and reverting to stock and doing all that might help but that seems a little to drastic. If you jump on the IRC with the hack kit they might be able to tell you how to flash your bootloader over without a complete revert and the devs on the collective's Palringo chat room may have some better options.

Problem booting up after using thunderbolt restore...

I had my TB running Zeus Skyraider. I was having some minor issues but nothing that really scared me. I decided to restore it/unroot it in case I had to bring it in. I used the app thunderbolt restore. Now it won't boot past the white "HTC" screen and it only says HTC, no "Quietly brilliant". I can get to the bootloader but it automatically tries to install a update and won't let me do anything other than reboot. I'm really scared I bricked my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I should probably also mention that it did boot up once and everything looked fine, and then I tried to install a verizon OTA update. That is when it started really having problems.
You might yet clearing your cache.
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda app-developers app
But I can't even get to recovery. The bootloader won't let me.
After the bootloader checks IMG150 or whatever it asks if I want to start update. Whatever I say it just leads to the plain HTC screen again. It also says "***LOCKED***" at the top of the screen. Is my phone completely locked?
The bootloader is locked. Perhaps flash an RUU to return to stock rather than an ota.

Ok, I am pretty bad at this stuff. Can someone point me to an appropriate RUU. I don't know what I should use. Does the radio I had before restoring matter or anything like that? I just want to know exactly what I am doing before I do it.
Okay, Zeus is gingerbread, so if you were running that, then you are best served flashing one of the gingerbread RUU files. You most certainly do NOT want to flash a froyo version.
Development Stickies have them. Read up on how to flash it.

Yes.
Remove the SD and then try to factory reset from the bootloader.
If it doesn't work remove the PG05IMG.zip off of the SD and then rename this https://dl.dropbox.com/u/61129367/Stock-ROM.zip to PG05IMG.zip and put it on the SD and then boot to the bootloader and run it. Then remove the file from the card and try to boot.
So nothing ITT seemed like it helped because the phone was not booting up all the way, but this morning it was on and everything was working so, I think it is at least in a state where I can take it to a verizon store and see what they can do about it. Thanks for all of the advise everyone.

[Q] **NEED HELP** Phone Stuck on HTC Screen after Radio Update!!

Hello,
So hopefully I haven't screwed up royally here, but here's the problem:
Rooted phone, running CM7.2 Nightly (I forget the version)
Went to update radio from this wiki (wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Speedy_Info) page - checksum matched.
Renamed file to PG06IMG.zip
Booted into HBOOT, ran update, rebooted.
HBOOT Info:
-----------------
SPEEDY XE ENG S-OFF
HBOOT - 0.93.2001 (PG0610000)
RADIO - 1.08.00.0506 (Seems the radio did update)
eMMC-boot
-------------------
Tried to reboot but now stuck on the HTC Logo screen.
What do I do now? And can you explain in layman's terms please? Still not privy to the technical stuff.
Latest radio for the Shift is 1.08.01.0111, do a search for it here, flash it in the same manner and see if it boots.

Well the only screen I can get to is the HBOOT screen, which automatically tries to update from the PG016IMG.zip file on my sd card. Even I choose not to update, my only option is reboot.
