What do you consider a GPS lock? - T-Mobile LG G2x

What do you consider a "lock". I consider it within 40-20 meters of accuracy, as that is the most accurate i've gotten.

You can get 40-20 meters of accuracy just from mobile signal. You do not need GPS data for that. With GPS you can get close to 10' for accuracy. It depends on how may satellite signal your phone gets.
Try GPS test from market to see how good you GPS is doing..

Haha wait really? With gps enabled and 5 or 6 satelites in use I get 20 meters at best, usually not. Without gps on i get 800 meters.. lol whats wrong? CM7 nightlys fauxs latest kernel.
PS i have gps test and have 6 satelites in use as stated above.

nevermind, I'm removing the cap that shows my current location to 10 meters.
My nexus One always seemed to say 6 meters, fwtw.
ETA BRB

I have OTA baseband. If you have gps test can you take a screen shot of how many gps's you have in sight? i have about 5 or 6 usually at my window.
Hey wait spyvie you've got wireless on. Haha, although still with wireless i get 20 meters although I only have 1 bar of wireless in my room >.<

Here ya go.
I went back outside and Maps said 20 meters, hit my location until it said 10, then fired up GPS Test and took the cap. If I'm reading this right it say about 100ft, that's 3 times 10 meters. It does seem to know what street I'm on when I'm driving.

Thanks a bunch. This is really annoying. It may just be where I am?
EDIT: Facepalm. Moved literally 5 feet over and pressed phone against the window and picked up 3 or 4 more satelittes and got 20meter lock. Wont bother going outside being nightime here on the east coast, and still getting some rain from irene

Well, you ARE in Nowheresville...

Just took this screen shot sitting in my living room about 10 feet from the window. Didn't think GPS got this kind of signal indoors. Not connected to wifi. Just mobile data and GPS.

Haha good one. Thing is I dont use gps much so I mainly test in my room (which might not be optimal gps testing grounds). I mainly use it just for gags because i cant drive yet

You ever tried geocaching? I wouldn't recommend it during hurricane Irene but its a fun way to use GPS.

I once pressed my Garmin against the window of a 737...

I was looking at that and saw some near me. Might try one before summer ends. School starts late for me . Private schools: pay more for less education. Although I guess it's higher quality. ANYWAYS. Back to the topic at hand.
I've never gotten 10 meter lock. What's the requirement for the navigation app to work well?
On a side note I get 5mbps down in washington dc. You'd think we'd have faster speeds? Or is it due to the population?

That's what I've always assumed.

Ya I always thought that when the icon stops blinking that it was actually locked on. In GPS Status it seems to be that way as well. Once the icon stops blinking you get all the information about your location and such. CM7 seems to take awhile to get GPS lock in maps and GPS status. I usually just start GPS status prior to using maps and it seems to help get a better/quicker lock than just using maps.

Haha well thanks for rendering my thread irrelevant guys, haha. Well I guess the answer is when the icon stops blinking. I guess that pretty much about wraps this thread up.
Phburks I'll definitely go geocaching before the summer ends. Hope my GPS works for that haha

Lol Im actually glad you asked your initial question. I've wondered myself what different people mean when they say it takes forever to get a a GPS lock, or when they say they get a really fast GPS lock.
And yea definitely give geocaching a try. GPS will get you within a few feet. After that you'll have to rely on the clues given in the cache description online. Its actually pretty fun.

I made a thread like this 3 weeks ago, but no one helped me out!

Poll: Death Grip, a real problem?

Hi everyone! Normally, I use my Htc sensation on Landscape Mode when navigating (I think that this is a very normal way to hang a smartphone when you're surfing the net) and I've noticed that the loss of Wifi signal is a real problem. So, I would know through this poll how many of you have encountered this same problem.
I recommend you to test your Htc Sensation in a room that's not the same where it is the router WIFI.
DEATH GRIP on Landscape Mode:
youtube.com/watch?v=ptC0pZVIuCE&feature=related
Every Sensation has antenna attenuation
All of them do. Every single one. The level of attenuation is dependent on your router radios, position, signal strength. Some see a slight problem while others see a more pronounced one. I see it only slightly. A software update likely wouldn't change that either. If it happens to be enormously burdensome in your case, a different router or another device (i.e. not the Sensation) will be your only choices.
It isn't a problem, yet I never really surf in landscape so for me that would be a no , however it does lose some signal slightly but not enough to affect anything
Just out of curiosity (since I had the problem on other HTC handsets), has anyone gone into Wifi where you would select an access point and increased the setting to performance (mine is charging at the moment and off so I can't give you the direct info but its something like communications, wifi, it shows a list of APs, then you hit menu and hit advanced and increase power consumption)? This drained the battery about 15-20% faster but gave me a much wider range on wifi. On my EVO, for example, I started off not being able to leave my apartment - with this setting on, I was able to walk all the way to the mailbox which was over 1000 feet away before my wifi would fade.
EDIT: Settings, Wireless and Networks, Wi-Fi Settings, menu, advanced.
Thanks Etherrealremnant for teaching me that setting.
I think it helped a little bit, in making it last longer, but it ultimately dropped out of wifi signal again.
Good to keep in mind though.
It's probably the biggest problem on the phone. Forget about touch screen responsiveness because that can be fixed with a software update. This probably won't which sucks.
Here is a video I made for Smash earlier. It's in another thread but I'll post here encase some of you didn't see it. The WiFi death grip is not a issue for me with my router or my buddy's router I'm filming the issue on. It also doesn't effect me while I'm at work either whether I have 5 bars to start with or 1 bar to start with. I have no doubt that some of you are experiencing very bad death grip issues. I would return it until you get one without the problem.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzWyvGLjKhs
I personally went through two Sensations that had the death grip issue with Wi-fi before I gave up and returned the phone. The phones I had would totally lose the Wi-fi signal. I could have dealt with a slight drop that did not interfere with browsing or watching video, but no signal meant no video for me.
I have the death grip problem. Htc and t Mobile both said it is unheard of. They told me to swap the phone out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
It really exists, but it has never effected me i think..
The WiFi on this phone is my only real complaint so far. It has about half the distance that my G2x did and the death grip is definitely there. This is problematic since 4G runs about 150kbps around my house...
I have wifi calling. When playing a game and the signal strength drops, it switches to a regular cell and interrupts my game saying it switched. Even if an app isn't using wifi, the wifi calling app does the usual popup announcement. Other issues that come to mind is when the signal drops, sometimes the game saves bad recover data. Running bad data either crashes the app or I get a notification of a bad save file. Another issue is having a game lock up. The home button still works and I can kill the process instead of pulling the battery. Once I got a black screen where it seemed like the OS locked up and nothing worked other than pulling the battery. All these issues go away when I put it in airplane mode although I need to take off airplane mode when I'm done.
One of the biggest problems of Sensation IMO. I can't even use it in landscape
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e
Can't use it
can't use the phone in landscape mode with 2 bars...
the problem is there and i had some emails changed with HTC and they recognized the problem, they even send me a picture how to hold my phone in the landscape mode ... doesn't work !
They should send instruction how to hold your phone now!
I put a small piece of foil over the top connectors. Now my wifi runs perfect.
Prior to this my signal would drop as soon as I left the room my router is in. now I get steady bars even outside my house.

Stick the foil under the 2 prongs and sorta just wrap right over and let it fit the groove perfect. Than slide your cover right over the too shouldn't need any added force as the foil will fit right in the groove.

[Q] 7 g2xs not one with working gps

am i doing somthing wrong. every g2x i get has nonworking GPS. my most recent one came today, preloaded with GB. i went outside to test it, couldn't get a lock. went to hidden menu and had it manually get position, and then it locked. when i came back inside it was off and had the SOD. pulled the battery and it wouldn't turn on for like 5 minutes.
but more importantly. is there something i can do to fix the GPS. i have 2 g2xs in my house at the moment, one on cm7 and the other stock GB. all i want is a phone that worked, and its been 7 g2xs and its been 4 months and 7 g2xs and i am still looking for the elusive "good" g2x.
any ideas for a good GPS fix. and i have tried bloater, after i run that my phone finds no satellites ( i live in Missouri and flashed south mid state)
thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.
First of all, do a factory rest. That's the first thing I would do.
After that go outside and try to get a lock.
I get a instant lock with the july baseband.
Let me know if that helps

should i do the reset for the cm7 phone or the stock?
Mine takea from ten seconds to ten minutes. The same on froyo and gingerbread.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Do it from Stock Froyo first, don't do it from any variation of Froyo.
Plain Froyo, factory rest then try to get a lock.
Should lock instantly if you have the newest baseband.
Sent From My Stock G2x
My set up right now is debloated stock froyo ROM + July 15th Baseband + Faux UV Kernel with setcpu profiles.
No reboots, no freezes, no crashes, no SOD. Pure reliable phone, with every feature working.
Gps, a2dp, Lg camera, and usb mounting.
Zero issues, zero complaints.
Sent From My Stock G2x
i reset both, my cm7 phone got a lokc after 10 secs. stock gingerbread failed to lock, and tthen rebooted
This is weird. After the reset I have the new market. And my GPS just locked on Indoors. This is the one on cm7. My new g2x is the worst I have ever had. When it turns off sometimes even a battery pull wont make it go back on.

Had an issue with my first G2X, my replacement came and it locks within 10 seconds in open sky.
Make sure when you start Google Maps to be outside.
Under Settings > Location and Security make sure Use Wireless Networks is selected. If you're relying on GPS alone it will take forever to lock on your position.
G2X CM7
I gotta try my GPS again soon. It wasn't working right before the update. It would work here and there, but not consistently. There were times it would take forever to lock in and when it did, it would sometimes lag a little bit and not update as I was driving. I don't use the GPS a lot so I haven't seen whether or not it works any better since the update.
Before the recent GB update my GPS was hit or miss on a lock. After the update it's a solid phone, no issues and GPS will lock in 5 sec.

There were some other runs in between, then this is with my second G2x from T-Mobile: May 22nd.
Two days later: May 24th.
Finally Gingerbread is here: July 29th.
Conclusion?
The GPS is a piece of ****. If you want a working one, you have to invest in a new phone.
And before people ask if I'm running underground or if there's trees around and if I have a clear view of the sky; here's a shot of my Nexus One from last Summer: July 20th 2010.
I had similar results with myTracks. I haven't tried with my current G2X, which is my second, since I got the new baseband. But the GPS has been absolute crap in my experience with both that I tried. While using myTracks and walking around my neighborhood it looked like I was staggering all over the street then randomly shooting off into someone's backyard then back to the sidewalk. Nexus One worked perfectly most of the time, never had issues until I went to GB on that phone, then all the sudden GPS became unreliable.
I feel like slowpig though, is it me? Is there something I'm somehow doing wrong, even though I've used this phone in the exact same manner I used my myTouch and N1? Why is it just so horribly unreliable. I've tried wiping, I've reset the AGPS data, I've done all sorts of "fixes" and nothing has worked. The fact that out of the box they've worked horribly, and no alternate roms, wipes, other random fixes has changed that behavior leads me to believe that they have a large batch of phones with either a faulty GPS, antenna, radio, or something.
Agreed. A factory reset helped one of my g2xs. But not on the other 6 that I have owned. Hopefully my complaint with the BBB will prompt T-Mobile to give me a refund. Its a longshot, but who knows

The LG update to Gingerbread definitely improves GPS locks. I use turn by turn so I need the satellites (not wireless networks) and before the update, my GPS satellite locks were taking atleast 5 minutes if they ever locked. After the Gingerbread update, my phone gets GPS satellite locks 'IN DOORS' in like 20-30 seconds now. IMO, that was the best part of the update.
Well since putting the LG update on my phone nothing seemed improved. So tonight I put CM back on, and no change. It tends to be close to my location, often times really close, but the accuracy circle on Maps is quite large. In fact, just now I took it outside and the accuracy got worst! It's just so colossally bad I can't see how these devices ever pass QA.

Nexus 5 GPS issues?

Is anyone else else having issues with their GPS? I'm running stocked rooted and it takes my phone forever to get a lock from the birds. It doesn't matter if I'm inside or outside it takes 30-60 seconds for a lock which I think is ridiculous.

I fix 11/23 sats in max seconds, sometimes it fix up to 18 sats after 2/3 minutes...... Stock, without mods.. :good:
Do you have WiFi and aGPS location reporting off? It could slow down position locking.
Sometimes my Nexus 4 GPS antenna hangs though, a restart and locking on via Maps helps for some reason, I use the app GPS Stats to see how many satellites the phone's seeing, but I guess you've done that. Maybe try out a tracking SW like Locus or something and see if the phone remains locked when moving for a longer period of time like going home from work, if GPS signal constantly goes away I'd recommend contacting Google on the issue. They'll either confirm to look into it or offer a replacement.
These are that stats I'm getting with GPS status seems very off to me... I'm probably going to contact sprint about this later today or tomorrow

I'm having a problem with GPS on mine as well. I play Ingress which is a location-based game made by Niantic (owned by Google). I have a lot of experience playing this game back to January on my Nexus 4 and have also played on my Nexus 7. The Nexus 5 is slow to lock and has much greater error than the Nexus 4 as reported by GPS Status when I am holding phones side-by-side. It seems to really perform worse under non-ideal conditions (inside a car, near tall buildings, bad weather). It seems to lose lock or otherwise have greater error under those conditions especially. I have heard of people who have no apparent issues though so it could be my device is just defective.

+1 under the exact same conditions. Really pissed me off blowing through L8's and "all resonators missed" pops up when I'm on top of the goddamn thing.
I came from the Note2 and noticed that the GPS kind of acts like a kid who didn't get the tootsie roll so just acts like a lil punk and doesn't listen or do what they're told. Nothing as horrible as the old Captivate fiasco, but nowhere near other devices I've owned. I'm guessing an update or two can fix it (along with the camera and signal drop issues)
+side note+
faction and location?
Feelin' smurfy in central Florida
I also have problems with the GPS.
The satellites are really long to fix (approx 5min, even with aGPS), and the signal drop quickly.
Only way to play Ingress : wifi positioning.
It is impossible for me to use Navigation in car

Same problem here on pure stock, no root. In car navigation is useless. Gps status toolbox is able to make it fix for a little while but signal is lost again after a (few) minute(s). Only thing I might have done out of the ordinary is switch from dalvik to ART. Gonna revert that just to see. Will report.
Reverting tot dalvik doesn't Fix it. so as a test, unlocked bootloader and reflahed stock firmware from google page so it was pristine again. No joy, no GPS lock.
This with stock without mod.....
There are some various threads also on the issue. I have found that the GPS appears to improve when I applied some pressure to the area below where the camera is on the back. The GPS antena is here and there is some hypothesis that the antenna may not be secured properly resulting in the poor performance. I was able to have better results playing Ingress after doing this. Per GPS Status, performance still not as good as my N4 so will probably RMA soon. It would be interesting if some having the issue tries applying the pressure to see if there is any improvement.
Mine doesn't see catch any signals on ART.
on dalvik it works but very slow compared to a S4
A S4 locks on 11sats in 10 secs indoors.
My N5 sees 2 in the first minute then just sits there.

More info... I have a US model and I am currently in Europe.
I compared mine side by side with a european model (D821) and it locked on much faster... 10-15 seconds.
I compared the gps.conf files and they are identical.
Someone started a thread one Google's forum. I suggest everyone add their post to that list so Google can see it and address the issue.
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/EkllXr0ZlZM
I'll test applying pressure to the back of the phone later but that's obviously not a long term solution.
EDIT: Applying pressure didn't seem to help.
I was on ART and couldn't get a lock. Switched back to Dalvik and it locked right away the first time. Turned off all GPS/Wifi/etc and waited 5 minutes. Second time could not get a lock whatsoever so I did the usual wipe cache/etc and uninstalled the GPS test app and re-installed and still nothing.
Calling Google.
EDIT#2: RMA on the way. Google support could not confirm whether other users were reporting problems. Rather than wait for a software fix I'm taking my chances with a new device.
no issues for me

I own a german bought 32GB D821 with serious gps issues too so that theory doesn't fly.
Same issue here as well. As an Ingress player, this is extremely frustrating. It loses its GPS lock way too frequently.
Try 2G Network mode on Mobile Network Settings
Actually, this problem persists since Nexus 4 with Jelly Bean jwr66y update. GPS Status app show me that my GPS got really weak signals when I'm in 3G networks, but it got really strong signals and work very well when I choose 2G network mode in 'Mobile Network Settings'. I wonder is it the some problem with you guys? If it is, then it's absolutely Android bug, not hardware issue.

Not sure I agree. My nexus 4 is rock solid with GPS on any network mode (LTE/H+/2G) and always has been. Even in areas where my signal isn't strong the GPS wouldn't ever falter.
I've posted my personal findings at http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/EkllXr0ZlZM now that I have my RMA device in hand also and can do side-by-side comparisons.
screenshots from GPS Status on nexus 4
That's kinda strange. What version of Android do you installed in your N4? Here 2 screenshots of GPS Status on my N4. First, I use 3G network (as you can see on the signal bar at the top of the screen) and waited about 3 minutes outdoor under clear sky. Weak signals. Then, still standing on the same spot, I switch to 2G Network and look at those bars, and the time it needs to get fix, work perfectly.

Shield Tablet experiencing terrible WiFi

Having some bad WiFi with my new Shield tablet.. Where my Note 3 or Tab S have full bars my Shield only gets 2 of 4... Low link speed too. I was hoping it was a software issue but not so sure anymore..... When holding the tablet in portrait, my hands hold the bottom part of the tablet, moving my hands increases the bars and then move them back and they go away. I guess the WiFi antenna is down there? Either way, it is easily blocked. Anyone else notice this?
there's a big thread over at geforce.com about it. you're not alone. 2.4 is OK-ish though still weaker than my other devices but 5ghz is terrible. where my note3 gets 108mbit 1 floor down the shield tab gets 6-12mbit and sometimes no signal at all. heck, same floor as the router and 1 room over with 1 wall between and 15ft total distance and it only manages a meager 24mbit connection when my note3 is at 150mbit and my surface3 is 300mbit. hoping its not a hardware design flaw and is just poor drivers or firmware.
Yeah its a shame really. I wouldn't expect bad WiFi signal really with any device released recently.
Maybe they lowered the mW output of the wifi to help mitigate battery drain from the gpu. That can usually be fixed with firmware, for about a 3% hit on battery life.
If antenna related, a power increase will not help much if at all. Only fix then would be a production revision.
Well I guess I will hope for the first possibility.
I might be a bit under on the battery life hit. Maybe 5% is closer. I hope so too, since was going to get the 32gb model when released.
Here's a look at Note 3, Tab S, and Shield all sitting on the router. Note the link speed on all.

It could be that your 802.11ac router is using the wireless-b/g standard instead of n

Does the Shield not support ac? Dang, I thought I read it did before I bought it.
Nope only up to n
There is already a way to increase the power with the wifi optimization setting and reports are minimal if any improvement. Looking more like an antenna issue, but always a chance something else. Need to get a response from Nvidia. If they go silent on the matter, that would be bad.
Wonder if the 32GB will have the issue as well? A delay in the 32GB (beginning of September) would suggest a design revision might be in place.
I just got mine today and the wifi is pretty bad on this compared to my note 3. I tried running a test by walking away from my router with both the note 3 and the shield tablet. Eventually the shield lost communication with my router while the note 3 still was able to acquire at at least 2 -3 bars. I was really looking forward to this tablet but if I can't go to another room without losing connection then it's pretty pointless.
Damn it. This is unbearable. I can't even play modern combat 5 which requires constant connection. It keeps disconnecting.
Running wifi analyzer I noticed the connection jumps a lot. I would love to open her up to see if it's a connection issue but not sure how to. Have to wait for a tear down.
May I ask which router you have ? I had a lot of issues with one particular brand- Netgear, which is very picky in terms of devices . It works with Mac retina, but it did not work with my Vaio , Now I am using cisco ea4500 and all of my problem gone, I might be wrong but it always good to check in on other wifi-s

Netgear r7000 Nighthawk. Shield tablet is my only problem device on the network.
My Tab S does great in the same spots. This morning has been actually great though, not as good as my Tab S but it also costs a lot more so probably expected. Here's 2 speed tests for comparison. First one is Tab S and second is Shield .
Mine works fine with an older netgear router. The classic 802.11g 2.4Ghz. Same speeds as my nexus 5 gets pretty much everywhere in my house. I don't use the streaming feature though so can't comment on it.
An nVidia guy did respond to a report of that 24Mbps thing. Maybe that bug affects more than just the WiFi Analytics app.

In my case, my issue is more range. The shield has a weaker wifi.
So I received a replacement last week which had slightly better signal than my original but it had a much warmer yellowish screen so there was no way I'm going to keep that. I figured then that this has to be a hardware thing so I opened up the back and made sure all the connection for the radio was properly seated. And to my surprise it made my wifi on par with the replacement and with my Samsung note 2014. I don't recommend you open yours of course but maybe there's potential QA issue with these tablets? I recommend maybe you get a replacement from Nvidia and hopefully you get one with better wifi.
Top is note 2014, bottom left original shield, bottom right replacement.

Does anyone else get lower signal bars than previous phone?

On my S7 Edge I always had near full bars. On this one(same sim card and service-cricket) I get lower bars but my speed is incredible and even faster than previous phone. I get a 8.84 MBPS Download and 3.95 MBPS upload which is on par considering Cricket limits to 8 MBPS. My bars are never full though or even close. Could this just be a firmware error?

The one issue I'm having is constant drop of data ... playing online games I can see my ping range from 4 green lights to 2 Orange light a then back to 3 green.lovjt . It never stays in one spot which causes very bad lag...idk if this is an isolated issue...but I will reset the entire phone and such tonight to try and start "fresh" to see...
Opposite for me. Coming from LG v20, Wi-Fi and carrier speeds are much much better.

The amount of bars really doesn't matter, it's your signal strength that matters. Look in about phone and status and you should see a range of -80 to -120 dBm. -80 being great and -120 being worse. Ever go to a football game or large concert and have "full bars" but a crap connection? The tower may be close but can't handle the amount of people connected. Sometimes they have COW's (Cell on wheels) that's set up to prevent this from happening at large events but still may affect you.
Anyways, the only issue I have is switching from WiFi to 4G it seems that my connection isn't that great until I turn on and off airplane mode.
You can get a app like signal check .... That will give you your connection in decibels..... That's the true bars ..... Sprint used to always show 1x as bars... You could a call and have no data

Same here, my V20's wifi and 4g reception was weak as hell. I'm consistently 1-3 bars higher and I've got signal in places I didn't quite have before.

So then is this good? If so, ATT nesds a firmware update to correct the bars to reflect the signal. Btw thanks for letting me know that. Its a big relief lol I almost signed up for ATT's $90 plan. Glad I asked on here

-73 is a very good connection.
And as for your statement, not necessarily something AT&T will do. Here's an article for you:

About the same to more bars on my s8+ then the s7e
Even that article has it, while being in the -7X range is really great signal, you "can" see signal near -50. I've wireless devices at locations that sit in the low -60s. So not having perfect bars is definitely understandable at -73.
Anyway you shoot it tho, the signal bars are worthless unless you get used to what they mean for your phone mfg.
This actually all blew up big with the antenna gate with apple (though I imagine many forget it now), where people would drop reception depending on how they held their phone. Their bars were worthless and you had to put the phone in a dev like mode to see it in dBm. Then you had a realistic idea of what was actually happening (if you were seeing signal drops or not.)
I remember putting my hand in the "death grip" and seeing normal bars on the iphone but you'd switch it over to read dBm and you'd do it and be at -119 to -120 which is bad. Would be -7x to -8x sitting with no one touching it.
