[Q] SD Card damaged - Milestone XT720 General

Hi guys need a little help here..
So my phone froze up earlier today and seemed that it shutdown, so no problem right, battery pull then reboot... Unfortunately, after rebooting after the "preparing sd card" prompt it said "Damaged SD Card" sd card damaged you.may have to reformat it.
Any ideas..??? I'm quite confused too as my sd-ext is mounting fine and I can go ahead and open it via root explorer, and I'm sure it's fine coz I'm able to open apps that I know are on SD.. but what's up with th fat32..? Sadly I don't have any backups.. any workarounds I can try before reformatting everything..? (Not even sure if reformat will do any good, as it is possible that the card itself got corrupt, though hopefully not)
Suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!!

Alright so HM you are spot on my friend, tried reading it on the PC and loaded just fine, so I ran chkdsk and selected both options, slapped it back on my phone et voila! Good as new! Thanks for the help, I panicked a little and posted this straight away via mobile app, as it got "damaged" while I was in the office and had no means of checking my SD card via PC.. Again many thanks!
Although 1 question comes in mind, what could've caused this? As of course I would definitely want to prevent this from happening in the future.

if you could not reformat it through usual way, try low level format. work on me all the time when my sd card corrupted. but you have u back up first while u still can cuz when its done, kinda hard to get back up the data.

I would also check for a corrupted file somewhere on your SD card. It will be the one that you were working on before the freeze. If you go and try to delete it, surpirise, it won't delete. I had this same problem and ended up just renaming the folder "bug". Tried to move it over to PC and use Unlocker or File Assassin and no luck. Finally ended up pulling everything off the card and reformating completely.
Check you media and any icons that are grey with an ! in there. Easy fix for that is to go into DCIM/ Thunbnails and delete the top two items that aren't actaully thumbnails. Then go to settings and unmount->remount sdcard to initiate the media scanner. This way you don't have to delete the grey! picture to bring it back into good standing and the picture won't be lost.
Chances are that it happened b/c something interupted whatever you were doing and fritzed out the SD card. Maybe run a sd card and sd-ext check in AOR or MZor too.

remove the card from the phone first. reboot. put the card back in. go and delete all the partitions on your card using your partition program. Recreate the FAT32 and EXT2 partitions.
sd card wont mount/g1 wont....
Maybe the g1 has a headache!
Keep an eye on the sdcard by going to menu.settings.sdcard... that should tell you the status. Re-boot usually gets rid of all my problems if my phone does not read my card for watever reason.

Its been a while since I fooled around with the sdcard and usb... but... I do remember installing some drivers for something or another (let me see what it was and if it is related some how... ) ill get back to you....
ok.thanx.do you mean the adb interface drivers??because i have that installed
try turning on USB debugging
yea, I'm having the same problem. The phone wont read the fat32 partition but it'll read the ext2. Trying to fix it tonight though.
If you are using ubuntu partition editor that will happen.. happened to me a good amount of times. Try formating it on a windows machine as a Fat32 and replug it on linux and it should work. That's what worked for me... took a couple of attempts... good luck!
hope you had backup your sd card
well i got my card working again.i think something went wrong when i partioned it and maybe it had something to do with the theme.i put the dreaimg.nbh and the update folder and luckily the phone read it.so it put me back to jf 1.30 rc30.so then i went back and updated.but as soon as the theme got erased everything went back to normal
Try this if you have windows, it worked for me, finally.
Use disk management:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
In Computer Management, click "Disk Management" on the left which is under "Storage." In the lower portion on the right, you should see a list of all the volumes. Right-click on the one you want to format and click "Format"
If it is a removeable drive you want to format, use "Removable Storage" under "Storage" instead of "Disk Management."
Click to collapse
Thanks to: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/44545/
Yeah, even paragon partition manager was reading it wrong, but windows disk management was able to format it back to fat32 without any problem.

I installed this driver today to do the custom splash screen. And now, my computer does not recognize the phone as a USB storage device.
When I plug in the phone, I get the "mount/don't mount" option. I chose mount. When I go into My Computer, the phones MicroSD card isn't there?
Any ideas?
I just uninstalled the driver and it works fine again.

SD Gold Card Help

I am having a problem that I haven't seen posted, or at least that I haven't found a post about.
I rooted my GF's phone, created her gold card, downgraded, installed a new ROM, everything went very smooth.
She has been using her phone for a few weeks and has had no problem. The other day she went to take a picture with her phone and when she click the button to take the picture the phone said that the SD card was not accessible.
I took her card out and put my card in, same thing. I put her gold card back into the phone. Installed file explorer and went to the SD Card, no folders had been create. I tried to create a folder through file explorer. Phone said that the SD Card was not accessible.
Anyone got any suggestions? I am clueless as to why I can't get any SD Card to work in her phone. The SD Card worked before I rooted so it has to be a problem with something I did or something I didn't do.
Thanks in advance
Did you try the card in your phone? Just to see if its the rom your using or the sdcard may have become corrupted....
WC
Well if you put two different cards in her phone and same thing then you either have a software error. (Reinstall the rom) or a hardware error. (take the phone back.) This has nothing to do with a gold card tho.
Don't get too worried too quick. This could simply be that the SD card is mounted as read only. I'm not sure how to do it but there's a way to check and correct the issue. Let Google be your friend on this one it will probably lead you right back to these forums with info on correctly mounting your SD card.
If that's not the issue start by reinstalling the Rom your using.
Next troubleshooting step after that is to reflash the stock Rom.
If that doesn't work. Go back to square one. Unroot. Format the SD card. Redo the gold card reroot and see what happens.
Absolute worst case would be go back to stock and locked to ATT and return the phone do to hardware issues.
Hope this helps!

May want to look here for read only fixes... they seem to have success...

He is using two seperate cards. One he knows is working on his phone with the same results on her phone. Not reading. I do not believe he has a card error. Unless he somehow messed them both up? Sounds somewhat far fetched. heh
I took her card out and put my card in, same thing. I put her gold card back into the phone.

Thanks for all the tips, I will try a good bit of them once she gets home from work. Something tells me its isn't mounting the card correctly, I am leaning toward a ROM problem and maybe going to try a different ROM.
She doesn't give her phone up to often for me to play with, typical woman she is always on it. But I will try some of the suggestions here and any others that come up here after. Somethings got to fix it.
Thanks All

[Q] Strange SD card problem??

Hey guys
I have Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9003, and I am using the vold.fstab mod for swapping the internal Sd card for the external. I have every thing running fine. But I noticed a strange problem. When I open applications, it seems like the memory card gets mounted in read-only mode, as when I try to use any file explorer to remove files, it cannot delete until I either use root explorer with mounting as R/W mode, or rebooting the device. If so, things get fixed, but after some use, the problem recurs. Besides, I noticed that while the problem is active, the gallary opens empty with a message showing up "No SD card detected". Otherwise, and even with the problem is active, apps open normally and flawlessly, but unable to write files or delete them. Rebooting always fixes the problem.
Any idea why this is happening?
BTW, the card is very new and healthy, and opens perfectly with card reader on windows, and sends and receives files to and from the computer very fast, and it is 16 GB.
Thank you
I solved that problem after months of research... You see, the problem is corruption... The explanation is very very complicated so I am giving you the things you need to do to fix that read only problem...
(Should be done by steps)
1. Put your sdcard in a card reader (recommended) and use chkdsk /r (if you are using windows)... Or simply go to drive properties and go to error checking, check all the boxes and start scanning until finish... Put your card back to the phone... Check if the problem still persisit... If it still persist, do step 2...
2. Backup all files to your computer... Reboot your phone to recovery mode and use the format sdcard option in the mount and storage menu... Restore all data afterwards.. If it still persist, do step 3..
3. Believe it or not, some files in your sdcard are causing a data corruption (This was my issue).. The only fix for this is to find out what files are corrupted... Mostly, the directory that contains these files are from:
sdcard/Android/
sdcard/Gameloft/
sdcard/data/
sdcard/lost.dir/
Do step 2 first... When attempting to restore the files back to your sdcard, do not include this directories... This will more likely solve your problem...
4. Some tweaks such as sdcard speed tweak and other sdcard related tweaks in init.d folder is causing this problem... Try to boot your phone without them and see if it works....
Thank you very much.
I really have some gameloft games installed and believe it or not, the problem is almost always occurring when I open these games !!
I will try your solution and inform you of the results .
BTW, what if the problem is caused by the files of these games? And what if the problem recurred after restoring these files? Is there a permanent fix for that?
Thank you

It seems like it's SD card problem, although it's new!!
I was playing on a game installed on USB Storage, and all of a sudden the game became unresponsive. I then forced reboot the device, and when restarted, SD became unavailable!! I went to "SD and storage" settings and both SD card and USB storage give "Unavailable". Pressing on "Mount SD card" does not work! Formatting is not working!!
Any suggestions guys??

BTW, I remind you that I am using the vold.fstab mod, gingerbread version. I tried to install another SD from my friend's phone that is working fine in his AT&T Galaxy S i9000, but once done, it gives me "USB Storage damaged" !!!!!!!

Seems like I lost my SD card
It opens normally in Windows, and I could back it up. When I delete all files, it gives that they were deleted. But when I eject it and reinsert it, the files are not removed
Neither formatting nor chkdsk in Windows work
GParted gives "Unable to open /dev/... as read-write (file system read-only)"
Any suggestions??

do you mind to post a screen short by command mount in adb shell?
Actually, I took the memory card back to the reseller, and they changed it for another working one. I just dont know why would all of this happen! The card is new, but there were problems preceding its damage, like the aforementioned problem of read-only!!

Actually, during searching for a solution for my problem, some websites suggested the following:
1- if your card gives you that it is read only, try to use micro SD adapter, and put the lock half way between the locking position and the unlocking one, th en try to perform chkdsk, followed by formatting attempt.
2- if formatting has failed, try to use GParted (bootable live disk is available online and can be downloaded).
Your internal SD will subsequently be recovered once the external is recovered, or simply, put a new external SD of whatever size, and you will regain access to your internal SD, and thats supposing you are using vold.fstab mod
Please let us know of the results , hopefully it works with you

Very Very Very Strange SD Card Problem

My SD card is in one or another way corrupt, I think. The system apps won't read the SD card. It's very strange, because I can browse the whole card on my computer and in ES File Explorer too. The Camera app can store images captured with the device, but not view them ...
I've tried to fix it with flashing ViperS 1.3.5 over my ROM again without wiping to see if there were any corrupted systemfiles, but no. That didn't work. So I mounted the SD card to my PC and backed it up, re-partitionated it and copied the backup back to the SD card. Still, the same problem is there. So I rebooted my phone into Recovery (4ext), tried to fix the permissions from there, and nothing worked. I checked the partition aligment and it showed me that the Fat32 partition was not perfectly aligned. So I deleted all partitions from the SD card using recovery (Fat32 and Ext4) and re-partitionated it from there, both Fat32 and Ext4.
Then, I tested the partition aligment and it showed me that both partitions was perfectly aligned. I rebooted and hoped it should work now, but no.
So this is pretty frustrating. Is the WHOLE SD card corrupt or something? My phone manages to load all my apps from the Ext4 partition, so I don't think that's the problem.
PLEASE!!! HELP!!!!!
The problem seem to have fixed itself ...! It's very strange, because almost every time I'm starting new [Q] Threads, the phone fixes itself... Strange -.- But, can someone tell me what caused the problem if it appears again?

Very strange I'm not sure what the issue was. I know with my SD card it showed corrupt or damaged SD but yet ran perfectly on my card reader.I formatted on my computer but still said damaged card. so I figured I needed to format through recovery yet when I tried to go to recovery it would say SD card needed. So I ended up pulling battery And getting into recovery that way then I was able to format. After I formatted from recovery the card was once more able to be detected and the error message stopped. It is a 64 gig. Maybe somehow your card wasn't formatting correctly. But how it fixed itself is very strange. I know in my case I thought I had a bad or damaged card because it kept saying damaged and was not able to be recognized because it needed to be correctly formatted even though I'd formatted it on the computer before hand. Maybe in your case it was an issue like that? Not sure but glad you got your issue fixed. SD cards can be touchy sometimes. In my case I had to format twice before it was recognised.

Dude, I'm going to get you to post threads about my problems too and see if they miraculously cure!
Maybe you should make a thread about a problem with you bank account because it doesn't have $10,000,000 in it! See if that's suddenly fixed. hahaha
As for the SD Card, did it suddenly work right after a reboot? Anyway I agree with Realsis. You can probably cure this problem for good by formatting the SD card, even if it's working now. Just save the contents to your computer first so you don't lose everything.

Following today's system upgrade my SD card won't mount

I've had my Idol 3 for a couple of weeks now and I just love it . . . so do my 'green' friends! However . . .
My Idol 3 got a major upgrade today, and now the phone won't permit mounting of the SD card . . . home of many apps!
The option under Settings/Storage is not greyed out, it's just that when I tap 'Mount SD card' nothing happens. I'm also getting a continuous notice, i.e. "SD card safe to remove".
The card was not removed either before or after the upgrade, but since I have had the above problem I have done reboots, restarts and hard reboots, and and have removed and replaced the card a couple of times . . . . I'm at a loss on this one!
Does anyone have any suggestions that will help me get the SD card mounted please?
Many thanks!
Just maybe a very strange coincidence here. I have been using the same 32gb sd card since I bought this phone and never had a single issue with the card or the phone (related to the sd card). This morning I checked to see if there was an update, I did not download or install it (since I'm rooted) but man ever since that moment I have been having f-ed up sd card issues. The same types of problems with it randomly unmounting the card and telling me the card is safe to remove, finding the card unmounted and touching the Mount button does nothing and just now I removed the card and my Chromebook is asking if I want to format it... WTF?
All this makes me wonder if Alcatel secretly installed some updates in the background today even though I did not intend for a system update. Hmmm.
I had similar issues with a sandisk microsd.....with it randomly losing everything on the sd....I switched to a samsung microsd and the issue went away so I think it's just very picky with the cards and you should try different manufacturers...also fat32 seemed more reliable than exfat. Samsung and Adata are two I had good results with outside sandisk which I previously considered the gold standard.
Thanks folks.
At this time I don't think it's an SD card issue unless the update corrupted it.
I mean, it was fine before the upgrade guvnor!

Backup the data to pc...format the card in the phone...copy the data back.
Same happened to me on the first OTA update and on this OTA update. I took my SD card out, put in a computer, copied all my files to a desktop folder, re-formatted the SD card, moved all my files from the desktop back on to the SD card once the format was complete and the phone mounted the card no problem. Total PITA and will consume about an hour and a half of your time to do all this. Not sure why this keeps happening on OTA updates, but next time, if Alcatel releases another OTA update, move all your apps back to the phone and remove your SD card prior to initiating an update. Only think I can think of?
Thanks both. Formatting is apparently the only way to go except that my computer wouldn't read the card via the phone.
Soooooo, I have mounted the micro SD in an adapter, and the card is currently being copied to my computer.
I'll let you know how that goes after I've done the format and copied things back.
Maybe just removing the SD card prior to an upgrade will prevent corruptions, or do you think that the upgrade 'needs' the SD card in place?

As the external sd is considered "optional" there is no reason you can't pull it prior to doing an upgrade to eliminate the chance of it getting corrupted.
If you have TWRP flashed and your situation is like mine was you'd find IT could read the card just fine and adb access while in TWRP copied off the data for me so seems related to the actual rom.
The solution
As some of you may have expected, and suggested, I was able to resolve my issue by . . .
1 Backing up the data on the SD card
2 Formatting the SD card
3 Copying my data back to the SD card
However, the .android_secure folder on the SD card was 'locked' by the phone, so I removed it and using Windows Explorer I copied the contents - all my apps that had been moved to the SD card - manually.
If you go this route yourself, your 'favorites' that you dragged to the home screen will be missing, so you'll have to re-do that process. It only takes a matter of minutes.
I want to thank those of you who responded with suggestions that pushed me all the way to the top of my 'success' mountain. The view is great!
Now if only the upgrade hadn't corrupted my SD card in the first place. Grrrrrr!
However, for those that don't realize it, the Idol 3 is a terrific phone that is soon to increase in popularity and recognition.

You might consider installing syncthing and running it on the pc and phone...it uses p2p technology to sync folders between devices....open source version of bittorrent sync. Glad you are back up and running.
