best rom? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys im coming from the htc evo 4g. I just got the nexus rooted. What is the best rom or most popular rom in here?

Miui and cm7. I think are the most popular
Sent from my MIUI powered Nexus S 4g using XDA Premium App

AFAIK there are no best rom, only most suitable to one needs. Having said that, Cyanogen, GPA17 and some other are quite popular...you have to try it to find one that suit your needs.
I did try several of them and ended up at stock rooted rom as I need a reliable handset for my day to day usage (phone, message, email, browsing, no games, hardly music or video)...battery is not a problem for me as I always have a second backup ever since I went to Android route.

stock rooted here. Found it to just be the most reliable and best battery. Plus once rooted there are tons of apps that can emulate the tweaks you get with roms. Love ZeamLauncher.

Hm I found stock rooted to be horrible on battery life. ATM I'm on MIUI 1.8.26 and TEUV88 rammstein kernel. Provides me with stability, better battery life, same performance, more customizability, and more functionality built in.
But it's all preference really. I suggest you try out a couple and figure out which you like most.

For fast, responsive, and good battery life, you might want to look into Oxygen 2.2.2. This is what I use and I can confirm that everything needed for a daily phone WORKS.

miui. personal favorite

My personal favorites are MIUI and Oxygen
You can download latest MIUI at www.miui.us and latest Oxygen at http://forum.oxygen.im/viewforum.php?id=7
I've had great experiences with both. Also, the latest Matr1x kernel has been working great on both. Oxygen has been very very stable for me

Kool man ill give oxygen a try thanks for the info

Hey, I would like to give you my personal experience.
Ive used oxygen, and it really is a beast when it comes to speed and battery.
However, I would recommend brainmasters MIUI. It looks awesome, the speed is awesome and battery usage is ok, not the best out there but ok.
If you want your phone to look very slick and sexy, go for MIUI

MIUI
Never was a fan prior though, was always avid cm7 user and other standard android base ROMS mostly CM7
Gave the new MIUI another chance and never looked back.
I was presently pleased, not only doesn't it look better its more stable and battery performance is allot better than CM7. It also adds allot of features and functionality that other standard aosp NS ROMS don't offer such as better camera, music, faster/smoother browser ...ect
Been using miui for a couple months now and couldn't be more happy don't see myself switching back anytime soon.... probably when icecream is released though

I prefer the stock Android Roms. I figure that Google has put a lot of painstaking care into getting the Linux kernel built just right. I tried CyanogenMod, but it seemed to be awfully unstable.

favorite, miui .. very nice and fast ..and highly customizable

SuperOSR - darn fast rom

brainmaster's miui or oxygen 2.2.2

I used zulugen and BM's MIUI.
MIUI is a complete New experience , it has loads of themes and lockscreens etc.
but i dont like the iphone style , so using ADW launcher on it.

I liked MIUI but Netflix video was stutter city, even on Wifi. Switched back to stock and it plays smoothly. Also works fine on Oxygen.
So I wanted to like MIUI (latest version) but there seems to be something going on with a background process that's choking video and causing it not to be smooth...

This. It's a Nexus, enjoy the stocky goodness of it. Otherwise why bother with a Nexus?

[Q] Best Nexus S Rom?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if I could get some advice. I had the Nexus One and had Cyanogen running on it, which I loved. I got the nexus S at christmas and love it... the random reboots did annoy me until 2.3.3 came out. Recently I rooted the phone and flashed modaco custom ROM based on 2.3.3 with the KB3 radio and GRI 54 base.
I was wondering if your guys opinions, what is the best ROM to flash, that is stable, with not random boots etc. but an improvment on what I have?
Thanks!!
They're all great. Try them all and see which you like the best.
Personally, I like CM 7 because of the T-Mobile theme engine that allows me to change the appearance of the ROM with the touch of a button. No more constant flashing of themes for me!
CM, only CM)
I was a CM7 fanboy untill i tried MIUI
MIUI without a seconds doubt...

I've tried a lot and although they all have their advantages I always come back to CM. It generally picks up all the great little mods that the community develop not to mention all its own great features.
Bear in mind that it is still not technically stable yet though R2 has been pretty good for me with only a couple of reboots since installing on the day it was released. Once we get the full stable CM7 it will be a tough one to beat
Cyanogen Mod 7 only.

I will elaborate. I've run every ROM available since January (when I got my NS). I've tried almost every release of those ROMs as well and I can honestly say that they are all awesome for different reasons. I try really hard not to be biased to one ROM or one developer because it tends to cloud your ability to try different things with an open mind. Right now I have NANDroid backups of CM7rc2, MIUI, Axura, NSCollab, Stock 2.3.3, Stock 2.3.3 Deodexed, and Honeycomb.
I'm always sad to see these thread because I think its asking the wrong question altogether. What these threads should ask is "What is your daily driver?" because "best" is so subjective to uses and personal preference. What some love about CM7 is also what many other hate. The iOS look of MIUI is both on of its most loved and hated qualities. Whatever tweaks a particular dev or team of devs seems fit to include may be exactly what a person wants or what a person doesn't want.
Now, I've said my diatribe and I'll answer the other question: "What is your daily driver?"
I have two. Some days I run CM7rc2, some days I run Axura. Once the white background issue is cleared up in MIUI, I'll add that to the rotation as well.
Cm7. Other roms are good for if you're bored and want to flash something new. Pretty sure everyone ends up on cm7 for stability and features better than stock.
Axura is my everyday driver. Its fast and its been the most stable for me.

I must agree entirely. I tried CM7 for awhile but it wasn't stable enough for me. I've never had a ROM as stable and fast and clean looking as Axura! I'd recommended at least giving a few of them a try though. The stickied thread by Kenvan is a wonderful resource!

CM7 for me.. the settings that CM7 offer are just too good to give up.
Axura for speed and animation, and CM for usability.

If you're looking for a more aesthetic ROM then I'd go with MIUI (im assuming that's what you meant). If you're looking for functionality and stability I'd go with cyanogenmod. MIUI is based off of cyanogenmod although it's not as stable. Also if you prefer the stock vanilla android experience CM7 is closer to stock than MIUI.
miui still needs work, iv had problems starting from rebooting while in call and battery life is not to great.
cm7 is the more stable never had a reboot and battery life one time lasted 1 day 15hrs!
I'm the opposite. MIUI has been very good to me in performance, stability, and battery life. CM7 reboots and has horrid APN problems for me. Just my experience though. In general they are both great ROMs.
Try both and see what you like!
MIUI is only at its early stages of development thus this ROM looks promising. On the other hand, Cm7 will just get better and better. I've tried both and I can say CM7'S latest releases have been really snappy, together wirh the wonderful work of great DEVS its just gonna bring out the best of G2X/NVIDIA TEGRA
Should make the distinction that I was talking about the Whitehawkx's MIUI port. Way more stable than the alpha2 in the dev section.
The only problem I ever had with minuit was really sloe GPS. Which is something I NEED. So that was a buzz kill

Yea I'm with regP Miui has been really good to me, cm7 was good also but I just prefer Miui with ease to customize it.
Hope that helped.....

Miui is based off CM7.
CM7 is more stock like but with additional features and functions built in.
Miui has a iPhone feel.
I think MIUI was built by the Chinese to make cheap iPhone clones that were actually androids. The software became popular and flourished. It has come a long way since I used it last.
I actually have an up to date CM7 build as my daily driver, saves as a Nandroid backup... as well as the latest MIUI. I have both saved and can restore from CWM to go back and forth.
MIUI is still new for the G2x and has some kinks. I hear an official release will be soon. It works pretty well, in my experience, but has some problems keeping a cellular data connection that requires a reboot. CM7 went through the same growing pains and has overcome that problem so it is only a matter of time before MIUI does the same.

whats gingerbread gps fix?
I have been running MIUI 1.7.26 and have not had any of the issues that other people are having. Wifi works great and so does cell data. Also, GPS locks within seconds for me.
The only issue I have is that wifi calling is not working. This is a know issue though and will be fixed today.
Oh, one other thing to mention, I am running the newest G2x Baseband so that may have something to do with it.

New to rooted inspire

Hey all,
This is my first rooted HTC phone (owned two others that weren't rooted) and had some general questions for all those who are rooted.
There seems to be a good number of roms out there and I'm not sure what a lot of the features each rom does, so the question I have is, what rom doesn't really overclock the phone and gives a nice stock functionality that is stable? I'm currently running the synergy rom but kinda looking to go elsewhere. I do apologize if this is a repost, again a new guy here to both the xda forums and rooted phones. Thanks for any help!
Its all about what you want outta ur rom, just gotta do ur research. I'm currently running CM7, and I must say Its stable.
I've been reading and reading and seems I just can't make sense of a lot of what each rom does..I honestly just want a pretty stock rom without all the bloatware that doesn't overclock the processor too much..thanks though for the quick reply!
You say CM7 eh? What do you like most about it?
I tend to shamelessly plug my own rom, so you could check it out.

Lmao ok guys, have you no shame LOL j/k
To be honest i really like the CoreDroid Rom. It is gonna be based on your preference though. I went through about four roms before I decided CD was the one.
If you wanna keep it stock (Im assuming you want Sense) then I would go with Android Revolution HD ROM. It has Sense 3.0 which has some beautiful widgets and pretty effects, runs incredibly SMOOTH and is VERY VERY stable and fast. You can overclock with it but if you prefer keeping it at stock speed you can do that also. Bloatware is also removed and there a bunch of performance tweaks under the hood also.
Go with 5.2.6 which can be found on their website. 6.1.0 was just released but its still a little buggy so I would wait a month or so and see if Mike comes out with an update to fix the issues people are having. I use 5.2.6 and its, hands down, the best ROM I've used.
I would definitely recommend the same Revolution ROM that Matt has recommended.
....Matt, did you ever try running a benchmark test on Revolution HD 6.1? I seem to be getting a 1500 benchmark score, but with version 5.2.6, i was getting 2000.... Seems kind of odd to me that it would regress in performance. When I overclocked 6.1 to 1.2ghz, i still only got 1800 but the phone was noticeably snappier.
I am absolutely loving the new Revolution HD 6.1.0, It has changed my Inspire into a gorgeous model of phone epicness.
I'm pretty much a noob too and wanted the same stock feel like you. I'm using ClearDroid with no issues. and with the newst 1.2.2 version my GPS seems to be working better than ever. good luck
I have literally tried every Rom that you could use for Inspire. If you want stock I would recommend either cleardroid, pirateghost, or Inspirephacopida. They are all based on stock look and perform about the same as stock if not better. If you want sense 3.0 features then I agree Android revolution is the most stable. If you like themes and eye candy then coredroid would be the one. Again its really preference. Just try some out, you will know pretty quick what your willing to sacrifice and what you don't. I do recommend giving an aosp Rom a go just to see whether or not you like it. I would probably use an aosp Rom if it had the sense camera functionality.

I to am new to root but I am also new to Android. I thought I wanted a stock ROM also until I got ahold of MIUI ROM. It has a ton of themes and you can download widgets from the market. So like others have said play around until you find what you like!

As for the Android Revolution it was next on my list to try out, but I guess I'll wait a month or two til an update comes out since CD is doing everything I really wanted out of a rom right now. Sooooo happy I pulled the trigger and rooted my phone...thanks guys for the input!!

MIUI VS CM7 VS Eaglesblood VS Weapon

Which one do you think is the best? Why?
Adv vs. Disadv analysis is encouraged.
Btw, I am not jboxer. There was a little bit of a name mixup
I've only tried weapon. I have had no desire whatsoever to try anything else. Weapon works! i get 24 hrs. of medium usage or 48 light usage per charge. it's fairly customizable, has many themes for it. bluetooth, hulu, netflix all work. i'm sure the others are great, but i'll stick to weapon. thanks Whitehawkx!
I have used EaglesBlood and CyanogenMod Nightly's. I have noticed no real differences between the two as EaglesBlood is based on CyanogenMod.
Weapon is based on stock, so it will be customizable but retain more of the stock functionality and won't be as widely customizable right off the bat like CM7 and EB. Weapon is also based on 2.3.3 vs 2.3.7. MIUI is also based more on stock but has a redesigned UI that looks a little more like iOS. MIUI is also more compatible with the Asian market and it's phone technology. They all have their downsides, mostly in that some piece of hardware isn't working at full ability. But that is just one of the things about custom ROMs.
In the end it is all up to you in what you want for your daily use. I suggest just trying each one out until you find the one that suites you best and stick with it.
Eagle ftw!!!

I've used EB and weapon, and personally i preferred weapon over EB. i haven't used MIUI and CM7 seems so unstable.
Started with weapon which was great. Tried miui but really to me its an ios knock off gone wrong.
EB is good but I had memory issues with it.
So since as of Oct 25th I have been using CM7 nightlies. They are pretty stable. I don't have any issues. CM is where most developers get their stuff from or they get stock.
With CM you have the latest version of Android. When ICS comes out I am sure CM will have the first stable one
However you do need to try and test urself what is good. Clockwork and Titanium are must have when using custom Roms.

MIUI FTW
I've been using CM7.1. I first scooped it up when I saw the Cyanogen guys drop it in the dev section and have been using it ever since. Battery life is great, GPS is relatively quick on my device and its very customizable, obviously. Only downside for me is sometimes when I'm charging it the phone will become unresponsive and basically give me a blank screen, have to batt pull. I have recently wipe batt stats and haven't had that problem.
I haven't tried weapon yet, but I like most of the stock based roms because of the LG cam and hardware compatibility. I may flash weapon when I get bored though just to mess around with it.
MIUI was one of the first ROMs I flashed because I came from an Optimus S and always wanted to run it. It was a great ROM; batt life was good, really snappy, very customizable again and it looked soooo good. In the end however the hardware compatibility issues caused me to look elsewhere. Was getting random FCs, GPS wasn't quick enough for me, overall not stable enough for myself to run as a daily.
No experience with EB here, but right now CM7 is my favorite ROM. It has a good balance of look, features, compatibility and performance. IMHO of course.
I've used EB, CM7 stable, and Weapon. I haven't used MIUI for the G2X but have run it on other phones in the past. MIUI is interesting to use as something different but the novelty wore off for me after awhile.
Right now I am sticking with Weapon as it provides the most stability and functionality IMO. For example, I couldn't stream Bluetooth audio in my car with CM7 and GPS locking was a nightmare. I also find it gives me the best battery life but that is highly subjective...
Anyhow, with ICS source code being released today I think there will be some serious beta ROMs coming my way soon.
Flash everything and see what you like best. Just remember to Nandroid along the way!
Faux rom all the way.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I think I've used every rom made for the G2x and flip between them often.
Weapon just works but that's boring. I would use it if whitehaux included T-Mobile theme support (aka CM7 themes). The addition to the notification toggles helps lower the burden of use also.
I haven't tried EB in a while but it doesn't get updated much. It runs off a CM7 base... so I figure why not just use CM7?
MIUI does have a novelty that looks like it would get old but if you use a 3rd party launcher and play with the themes, you might find yourself getting addicted to the various array of different apps and functionality. The dialer, messaging, and music apps are glorious. You will however find that compatibility is the lowest and some FC more times then normal. For me it was completely useable. Development for MIUI is being ramped up and I would really like to have a really good stave version one day.
CM7 is what it is. It is the fullest and most worked on rom available on any phone. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as MIUI but overall is a good balance between MIUI and Weapon. It is currently what I use.
What I like to do is view the "Post your homescreen" threads for both CM7 and MIUI. Find something that you really like and go for it. Android is all about custom appearances and style. Embrace it.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
I've tried them all
CM7 Nightlies - Seemed very unstable to me
EB - Just didn't feel it. I wanted to retain the look of stock. (First ROM I used, switched to CM7 Nightlies about 2 days later)
Weapon - Perfect for me since it looks just like stock and has more. (Currently using)
MIUI - Too much like iOS. Why did I get an Android? Because I liked the look of it... Didn't really like not having an app drawer (plus I liked the cube affect in app drawer) I reflashed Weapon about 5 minutes after flashing MIUI.
I've been using Weapon 3 RC1 and switched around to MIUI and CM7 then back to Weapon. I found the user interface of MIUI confusing and CM7 I can't say much about cause I used it so little. Weapon is straight-forward to use and very stable. I will continue to try various ROMs and kernels because I like to experiment and discover what's developing that may be better than what I'm currently using. For now, its Weapon.

Weapon 3.0- Just wasnt working good for me at all. I dont know why but things were broken (Browser would constantly crash).
CM7- I am currently on this rom and it works great. On the latest nightly havent had any problems.
MIUI. im a recent convert and I really am seeing what all the hype is about now. super smooth, super customizable with themes and my personal fav? NO MORE ANNOYING BROWSER SLINGSHOT EFFECT!! this urked me to no end with other gingerbread roms. I can finally scroll without having to think about it lol.
miui all day baby!!!
Weapon since 2.6. Everything works. Period.
MIUI does feel weird at first but load up a custom launcher and you'll be right at home with Android-like feelings. Once you stop using the default launcher, it starts becoming this amazing experience. The launcher is the only resemblence to iOS (restrictive), everything else is unique.
Once you use MIUI or CM7 for a while, its hard to go back to Stock-like roms. The pros outweigh the cons. I didn't see the purpose of CM7 at first either. It's only until you discover the hidden gems that make it alternative roms simply amazing.
For Example: CM7 and MIUI allow UserAgent changes on the fly to flip between Desktop, Mobile, iPad, Android, Chrome, etc. I personally like the fully rendered pages so I set it to a desktop renderer so I'm not pulling up the crappy mobile sites all the time.

MIUI or CM7 - Which's better?

im on MIUI 1.11.18 but i was just generally wondering what everyone else thought was better and why?...
sent from Motorola Defy @1.3gz running 2.3.7!
General purpose question.
And you've to test a rom by yourself because, some people like Miui and some others like CM7 ... there is no rule on that!
Me I like both, but what a shame I only have one Defy...
Pepsi and coke. They are both good roms I like cm7 more but that's just me. Find your flavor and if u ever get bored switch it up.
Same as both answers above, you will not get a definite answer. Only way is to try both yourself then decide which one you like best.
If you want speed then CM7 is better, but if you something that looks good and is a lot more customizable then MIUI is the choice.
I am always swapping and changing between them both.
Cheers

CMIUI v2.5 feels stable enough. I updated from 2.0 to 2.5. Both versions are fine.
Isn't a question of what's better, it's defined by your taste. Considering both "stock" versions, with no customizations (like CMiUI or BareBones):
CM7 is stable, fast and light. If you want your phone to run like a bullet, even with several background applications running, this is your goal.
MiUI is quite fast, and beautiful. If you run no background apps (like, i.e., Usage Timelines or Lookout), it'll run as fast as CM7, but it has a poorer performance for gaming or other high-CPU/GPU consuming tasks compared to CyanogenMod.
There are implementations that make things even better: CMiUI claims to make the phone as fast as if it was running CM7 (I don't think so, but I still think it's the best ROM available), and BareBones is supposed to make CM7 phones run even faster (which is perfectly plausible, since it rips off almost every app which isn't indispensable for the phone to work). It's up to you to try the ROMs and find the one that suites better with your personal needs.
How about battery life?
On which one is better?
i've tried cm7, galnet ics miui, and dsj ics miui. can't say i noticed much differences in battery life. they all consumed about 0.5-0.6% of battery life per hour in deep sleep.
performance wise cm7 is still the smoothest and most stable. i have no doubt about that. it has the least troubles/problems.
