I'll probably be putting mango on my hd2 now that the rtm is out. I need offline gps cause I don't have data. on android I've always used copilot. so for WP7, I've found Garmin StreetPilot and Outdoor Navigation by GPS tuner. with garmin you can only download maps for each route, correct? are there any other options? which is the best? I'm in the US.
thanks.
You can download Navigon from this link and you will see on the pages were to get the maps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099662&page=62

You don't want Outdoor Navigation, which is more a tracker tool. GPSTuner have Turn-by-Turn, which is a true navigation app and also allows you to download maps.
navigon I think is currently the only gps offline solution for wp7
Turn by Turn from GPS Tuner will work with downloaded maps, but the navigation calculations still requires a data connection for the original route calculations, and for any on the fly recalculations should you miss a turn.
I have downloaded the maps for my local area (about 300km strip of the coast) and it works really well. Only issue is when I am out of mobile coverage area and miss a turn I am stuffed.

You also have the various versions of Navigation by GPS Tuner LLC (country or continent maps, eg Navigation Europe -don't confuse with Navigon Europe).

i've installed googlemaps beta and is wonderful but to use this software as tomtom is too expansive (sownload map from internet). it's could be possible to go with offline map?
thx
As far as i know... no.
The google maps downloads the map data on the fly (as you scroll).
I have a 5GB data plan, so it's not a big problem for me
yes, on the fly.
in france, we have illimythic, it's an unlimited data so it's perfect for google maps, rss news, internet .... and it's only 6 euros more than a normal subscription.

You might wanna read up on this post for using google maps offline
search for a software named: Terracrosser.
Search google for a program called Google Navigator lets you download maps on phone you can select an area of a map and it will download that area with all zoom levels and views, its very good. Plus it has neat features like street view (before google maps had it) kml creation and other stuff.
Use the google navigator.

Which is now called Global Navigator... this program uses google maps info to feed and allows offline map support, you can also download a certain area of the map at a defined zoom level. its great!
There is a news regarding that it will be possible to use Google Maps offline.
I have heard this news two days ago. Is it possible now? Is it true?
If not, is there any way to do so?
Thanks by now...
what gps aplication to use on windows mobile ?
garmin , tom tom ....other than that?
i like Garmin, good maps for canada. finger friendly for driving- not that u should do that lol
Google Maps. Depends what you use the GPS for i spose.
GPS Softwares: Destinator, Route 66, Co-Pilot Live, Mapking, iGuidance, Nav N Go igo.
Off Road GPS Software - OziExplorer, Vito Navigator, GPS Tuner, Tracky Pro
Really depends on what you want to use GPS for and your location on earth
i use it in Europe .... for driving ... but i do not want to use internet .
for using Google maps you have to use internet ....right?

Yes, you need data connection for Google Maps.
I personally use iGO8, and I have no complaints so far. Their maps are recently updated, more so probably for European Maps.
i used google and tomtom and i can say forget them
iGO8 is the best i used
if your device can't run iGO8 at full speed turn off landscape and buildings
and it will become very fast
beside that iGO8 gets gps signal very fast 2-3 times faster than iGO6 or tomtom 6
I'm desperately searching for GARMIN for android (xperia x10)
why? is the navigation app not sufficient? i find it much smoother and more up to date (AND FREE) in comparison to any Smartphone based TBT navigation software so far.
well. Current navigation needs GPRS connection. In rooming is very expensive downloading maps. Garmin's maps are on SD card
I must admit, it would be nice if you can download a certain area of maps.
For example, if you are going on holiday, it would be nice to have the maps for Spain already on your SD card so that when you are lost, you can get back to your hotel/restaurant/pub etc. Not necessarily just for TBT, but top down maps too.
I do think (for local journeys) the maps downloads before the navigation starts, so that if you do lose 3g/GPRS signal you still have a visual map, and it also downloads the street view level of the destination (in my experience, it loads very quickly when you reach your destination, so I believe it is pre-downloaded)
Maybe its something that Google would take into consideration if people asked them for it (or a dev for 'hacked' versions of Google maps)
EDIT: should also note that Garmin isn't yet released on Android. They will soon be releasing a Garmin Android phone. Maybe after that they will release the TBT Nav as a standalone app
There are other apps that not need GPRS to work.
Navigon
Ndrive
SygicMobile
iGO (not for x10 at the moment)
CoPilot8
They are not free but you can buy individual country maps.
hopla - Which country are you in? Google maps works really well in the UK and a few other places now - and doesn't need GPRS.
Just download iGO but Motonav version and you will be very satisfied ! I am using it and it is great. Dont know if I can put some links to cracked versions but just google "iGO Motonav" and download version for Milestone ( 854x480 ).
Cheers
i would like to use the Garmin GPS navigation too. The motonav isnt that good to me. I have compared with the current navigon GPS and motonav, and found out that motonav usually points for longer distance travel.
note: i am living in US.
Copilot is the one working the best so far,the map are updated and it work flawlessly on the x10
i would like garmin for my android as well, i love google maps and the navigation, but garmin maps supports custom maps such as for western canada being able to search by LSD (Legal Subdivision) which normally looks like 12-14-15-18w4 anyone who works oilfield, or outside of a city office uses it in AB/SK/MB
Garmin seems to be the only mapping that comes with or has an add-on for inputing those type of addresses
Here in Asia (Thailand / Cambo / Laos / Vietnam) Garmin is the only routing game in town really..
So all other suggestions, while valid for some territories, are moot if we dont have maps for the region.

to do routing you still need a data plan...all brute force does is cache the map to the area you've browsed and it gives you your current location
also, browsing the map at different zoom levels takes forever
If you need custom maps for android the solution is Navitel, ($28 in Android market), make your map with gpsmapedit (version free) and export in Navitel map (with routing, and no need data plan). It´s very easy.
co-pilot 8 pro has been excellent. If they release a tomtom version well thats the one I like best. I travel alot so tomtom has been perfect for me.
You should check out navigon, I use it myself and I'm very impressed, I tried some of the others but didn't like them. It's worth a look.

Im thinking of buying the newly announced Acer Stream android phone
Im new to the android idea so A few things i dont understand:
i want to use gps in some special cases a few times a year,
other than that i want just to be able to view maps on my device,
no need for turn-by-turn navi, i dont need : after 1km turn left , follow the road,
can i just view maps 2d maps and my position for free?(excluding the price of the map being downloaded from the web)
cann i store G maps on the phone? donwload them when im in a wifi zone, for example a map of a country?
-if im in a area where there is no 3G or connection can i still use the gps function? Can i lock a position and then see it on the blank map?
What about some longitude and latitude numbers and then it shows me the direction and how far is it?
-do i get a compass?
Or would nokia n8's Ovi maps suite my needs better?
Thats all for now thanks
Any opinion is appreciated
Also for example Can i download Google Goggles for free?
how many apps are free and how many are paid?
bumb bumb bumb
Google Maps and Buzz are free yes. As for saving maps i do not know, maybe try search for an app that does that.
what about using the gps for latitude and locking position in a no coverage area, with no maps and the using it for distance to locking point. desstination and direction
anyone
i want to know this
i have an acer stream and it is a very nice package
Offline Google Maps to work on 'all devices with Android 2.2 or higher,' 3D compatibility less clear.
We'd heard earlier that Google had "nothing to announce" in regard to Android compatibility with the newly-announced offline Maps support and 3D modeling, but look -- things change. We reached out to the company and urged 'em to dig a little deeper, only to have the following confirmed: "For offline Google Maps for Android, all devices with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and above will be supported." As for the 3D portion? "We'll have more details about device compatibility for 3D imagery on Google Earth for mobile at launch." After the event, we spotted a Googler using the 3D build on a Galaxy Nexus, so it's obvious that Android 4.0+ will be supported, but we have to assume that some of these older Froyo devices may simply lack the proper oomph needed to fly around the downtowns of [insert major metropolitan area here].

I also have Sygic but Google maps are going to be better than Sygic's cause its maps aren't the best around.
Nowadays you can download google maps tiles from several apps like Orux Maps, Locus, Maps- and several more. Then u can use the tiles in offline mode and navigate through them in airplane mode.
Even in current google maps app, in Labs section you can activate the option to cache a map zone in order to use the tiles in offline mode too.
Cheers... and let me say.... SUMMER IS COMIIIING
google maps with gps?
Does anyone know if the new google maps apk will support satellite gps location sources, or only online phone/google location sources? Sygic Aura has offline maps but no satellite gps capability.
In other words, will it be an full offline satellite gps map system?
we can use offline maps in current version only...
1. Open Google Maps
2. Go to Settings -> Labs
3. Click on Pre-cache map area to activate it.
4. Go to your desired place, tap and hold.
5. Tap on the area that appears and select Pre-cache map area. that's it..
enjoy offline maps :laugh::laugh::laugh:....

That's limited to the 10mile radius from where you live or where you pre-cache the maps. This is a big limitation & that's why it is not called offline maps cause after all you need internet to pre-cache the maps.
In offline maps you could store the map of the whole city you live in.
In Nokia S60, I could store the map of my state or even the whole god damn India into my SD Card. Now you decide which one is better.
Try oruxmaps or locusmaps!!!! :good:
