Restroing clockwork recovery on i9023 ?? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I was using latest cyanogen on my i9023 till today and today I tried to go back to stock ROM, I downloaded a 100% stock nandroid backup and restored it with CWR, but not if I try to boot in to it, stucks in black in screen after the boot animation.
I tried to restore the cyanogen again by going back to recovery menu, but it seems that restoring the nandroid backup replaced it with a sort of more limited recovery menu (Android system recover <3e>). My bootloader is still unlocked, but I think I lost the root access...
How can i get the CWR back? I tried to install the img from computer, but I can't get to the phone at all... "adb devices" in terminal doesn't give me anything...
any help is greatly appreciated!

I just answered a question about this haha
I'm gonna assume you have a fastboot binary installed in ur tools folder of the android sdk?
if you do, then
try this:
1. Grab a recovery image from one of the threads or here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Nex...Recovery_Image
2. Then, put it in your AndroidSDK tools folder, and go into terminal or command prompt and cd into that tools folder
3. fastboot flash recovery ____.img
(the ___ is the name of the recovery image file)
4. reboot ur phone into recovery and run a nandroid of some sort.
see if that works haha

THANK YOU!!
It worked out perfectly!!

thx!
this worked for me 2.

[Q] Possibly made redundant my Nexus S!!

9020 – Eur model. Was 2.3.3, but upgraded to 2.3.4 after one day.
I followed the Unlockr guide, and followed the following, before deviating!!Can someone help me recover from this recover from this?
Bootloader successfully unlocked
Then it all went pear shaped!!
IV. Flash a Custom Recovery Image
1. Download the custom recovery image and save it to your computer: DONE
ClockworkMod Recovery for Nexus S
2. Copy the recovery.img file inside the tools folder of the sdk (so it is in the same folder as fastboot.exe) DONE
3. Then in the command prompt that should still be open, type the following with hitting enter at the end of
each line:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img DONE
This is where for some insane reason (moment of madness) I deviated and don’t know how to get out of it. I rebooted and it went into clockwork mod. I couldn’t get out of it so I thought I would flash a backed up nanroid rom (2.3.1) which I down loaded. Big mistake, as it boots then freezes after 1minute.
I then booted into recovery (clockwork mod) and wiped cache, and pretty much everything else. Now the phone hangs on the google start page, recovery (clockwork mod) says there’s misc missing, cache missing etc....Cant flash any new rom. Can get to recovery but that’s about it.
I need some help to fix it!

If you have recovery, then you are fine. Just flash a rom. Flash the stock rom if you want. Any rom. Then you should be fine.
Sorted!! The solution was found here:

New ROM up and running, no issues so far.

There is now 5.0.1.0 update posted on koush's page (Google Nexus S):
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.1.0-crespo.img
Click to collapse
You can open Android Terminal app and type the following commands:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-clockwork-5.0.0.0-crespo.img
reboot recovery
Click to collapse
I was able to update via ROM Manager successfully though (it will take quite awhile to switch from Google logo to boot animation on your first reboot).
i allready tryed that terminal thing .. last time it worked (3.0.0.5 to 3.0.2.4) but this time .. no chance ..
the update with rom manager dindnt work on my Nexus S anyways .. i dont know why ..
i tryed that with different roms ..
i had such a problem on my Desire like a year ago and than i had to delete a file .. i cant remember but is it possible that i have to delete the file here too?
thx

ok .. in this Thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039584&page=5
i found this:
"anyone having issues with recovery flashing open rom manager and press menu and go to settings. now check erase recovery. this will wipe the recovery partition prior to flashing. this makes the recovery img flash correctly 99% of the time. if not on the main page in rom manager press menu and clear your download cache. this will remove all the files and folders inside /sdcard/clockworkmod/ so you will los e any roms downloaded. then click to flash the recovery again. it will redownload the recovery and reflash. you should still keep the erase option in settings checked. if it still does not flash correctly try flashign twice in a row. if that doesnt work fastboot erase recovery . and fastboot flash recovery \path\to\recovery\here.img"
delete recovery BEFOR flashing a new is working here ...
Flash_image gui by Joeykrim will work great for you
I did an update to v5 and couldn't boot into recovery too, but that was because i did it by the usual hardware buttons Power + VolumeUp.
Then by accident, i was able to boot into recovery, and that is by the "Reboot into Recovery" menu in ROM Manager itself.
Have you tried this method of rebooting yet?
the new cwm flashed fine for me no issues.
I can no longer reboot into recovery after updating to CWM5.01. Tried using rom manager and terminal emulator with no luck. Also tried reverting back to my old recovery and still nothing. The above steps posted didn't work either. Someone please help. I can't restore any backups because I can't boot into recovery.
Edit: Working and fixed by pushing it through adb

[Q] Why ClockWorkMod Recovery not available despite installed ROM Manager? (Nexus S)

Dear all,
I want to upgrade my Nexus S from CyanogenMod-7.1.0-NS to the latest cm-10.0.0.-crespo.zip. I have ROM Manager v5.0.2.4 installed.
It is the first upgrade since I installed CyanogenMod originally, please bear with me. ROM Mgr says I have CW Recovery 6.0.1.0 installed,
but starting into fastboot, the CW Recovery image is not found. Therefore I also cannot make backups.
Q1: I do not understand where did the Recovery img go? I never changed anything. I did 2-3 backups in the past, nothing else.
I thought that ROM Manager is EXACTLY there to help doing all this, managing the different ROMs (recovery and others), backups, etc.
What am I missing here?
Q2: If someone could explain, what is going on and how I get a working CW Recovery running to do a full backup before upgrading,
I would be very happy... Q3: I hope I do not have to go through the whole SDK installation thing again!?
Thanks a lot!

I am not sure what is happening with ROM Manager, Hopefully somebody else can throw some light on that.
In regards to installing CWM 6.0.1.0, try flashing the img file through fastboot using fastboot command, flash recovery recovery.img where the"recovery.img" will be your file name.
Once installed then you can do your backup and the installing of new ROM's without any issues.

Thanks! Q1: To use fastboot I need to establish the whols Android SDK environment on the PC again, right? Q2: Or can I just copy the recovery img to the device and start it somehow via fastboot mode? I really would prefer not to set up the whole SDK environment again just to do a backup.
Q3: Anyone can shed some light on why ROM Manager is not working as expected?
Alternative: I made a manual backup by copying all files from the device to the PC. I know I am missing all the apps this way. Q4: What else is not covered by this backup method?
Thanks a lot for your help!

You will need the SDK tools directory to do the flash using fastboot.
With regards to backing up your apps, just use Titanium Backup.

I have a Motog 1040 tx.
I have unlocked the boot loader through Motorola's website
I have SuperSU installed. I have verified using an app the phone is rooted.
This my problem installing clockword mod...
When I go through the commands in terminal manager. It says recovery. IMG not found.
I've downloaded clockwordmod recovery peregrine for my phone model and renamed
it recovery.IMG and placed it in the sdcard memory card root.
I've tried placing flash image in my sdcard root as well and used that method as well.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? The sd card is listed as sdcard1 on my device. I've also noticed that there is an emulated sdcard listed.
You can flash recovery in fastboot mode by using the command fastboot flash recovery nameoffile.img
How do I go about doing that?
Make sure the phone is not connected to a USB cable. Press and hold both volume buttons, press and hold power for a few seconds, release all buttons and you should be in fastboot mode.
What do I do once in fastboot mode? Where do I enter the command and where do I place the recovery.img
Have a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577043
I need confirmation that you've placed adb and fastboot in the platform tools folder?
Fastboot doesn't work in command prompt. Is this due to windows 8.1 64 bit...?
Fastboot and mfastboot should work in Win7 by installing drivers.
Win8 is a little trickier: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/index.php/topic/1362-how-to-adb-fastboot-in-windows-xp-7-81-10/
OK... So I got fastboot working. I flashed clockwordmod recovery peregrine....I flashed clockwordmod mod recovery no touch.... I've flashed twrp...... Successfully.....they're the right version for my phone. Even though I've sucesssfully flashed .... My recovery is still stock. What am I doing wrong if it is saying I've successfully flashed the recovery IMG though it doesn't change?
Very good

After it flashes successfully, disconnect the USB cable, and boot into recovery using the volume buttons.

Awesome it worked. Here's my other issue now though. Because I edited a file and inputted a string incorrectly in the root folder I had to install my stock ROM. Since reinstalling the stock ROM I have next to no memory left on my device. When I used mfastboot I did not clearvuser data so I wouldn't loose everything on my phone. What can I do about this. Will installing the custom ROM for my device clear this up?
I don't think a custom ROM is going to help you get back your memory.
Install Titanium backup. Backup your apps and data, do a full wipe of data, cache, and Dalvik and check memory usage. If that doesn't help, do a full wipe of everything, install the ROM, and restore from your Titanium backup. Just make sure to save your titanium backup folder to your PC before doing the full system wipe.

Nexus 5: Stuck On Boot Animation After Nandroid Restore

Phone stuck on boot animation after doing a nandroid restore
I made a nandroid backup using CWM, then directly after I restored it just to check if it worked. It rebooted right back to CWM, so then I tried wiping the cache and the dalvik cache. Now it shows the boot animation with the flying dots and it won't stop. I have also tried the wipe data/factory reset and it still gets stuck on the boot animation. What should I do? At this point I don't care about getting back my data, I just want to load back onto stock rom.
I'm not entirely sure on how to flash to stock rom; I tried using fastboot but it won't recognize my phone, USB debugging could possibly be disabled?
My bootloader is unlocked, and my phone is on rooted stock rom 5.1.1. I am able to enter CWM.
I would really appreciate any help!
EDIT: I found out what was going wrong, there's an error while restoring /data. I have another nandroid backup I can use, but the phone isn't showing up on my computer, so I can't move it to the SD card. What should I do?
Ok, don't worry as long as you can access to the bootloader and recovery all is going to be fine.
Just Download one stock android versión for Nexus 5 and flash it from the bootloader with the adb tool.
P.S: You can copy files into de /sdcard through adb, like...
Code:
adb push /local/file.zip /sdcard
Happy flashing
