Guys, something i just found
instead of having to mess with gps.conf and upload and so on, here is a very easy way for all of you to update your GPS zone.
just edit your STARTUP.TXT file:
set mtype 3162
set ramaddr 0x00200000
set ramsize 0x01000000
set kernel zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set initrd_offset 0x00A00000
set cmdline "rw console=ram1 gps_zone=fr"
boot

change this field with your country:
it for italy
fr for france
de for germany, etc etc
if you don' know your country code, check here:
http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/@
and click on your continent and country.
note: this trick is compatible with r134 and r167 (initrd.gz)
for those who wants to understand:
this tells the system to update the ntp server inside your gps.conf
ntp is a remote time server, your gps will receive time from different satellites, and will compare with the time he has in order to determine position.
having a fast responsive NTP server ensures fast GPS positioning and better performances.

you can check if it worked with astro app:
open /system/etc/gps.conf
and see the first line with NTP server: it should be updated
in my example you should have something like "fr.pool.ntp.org"

its not my idea, this trick exists since few releases and i wasnt aware of it until i read the "init" script of our initrd.gz
it will always use the ntp servers from pool.ntp.org, like the stock android builds, so you dont have to worry about this.
just try.
for serbia, you should use gps_zone=rs
as defined here: http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/europe

Does anyone knows if there's a app available that just gives a signal based on the speedcams gps position (and i'm not talking about sat nav) so you can even use the poi databases from tomtom if possible.
There is an app on Modaco called cameraware and it is very good. I use it all the time and you get free updates.
I think it is only for the UK though.

I know so does tomtom, route66 etc but I don't want to use the navigation just something like a small program that tells me when i'm approaching a speedcam .

Don't like that. It's depending on the input of other users and i don't think there are a lot of users of the program in The Netherlands

I got the Sense UI running on my Polaris!

I downloaded the port that worked for Kaiser her: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547264 (If this build doesn't work, try the Vogue build: http://code.google.com/p/vogue-hero/downloads/list. Download the Zen-Hero zip file.)
And replaced the default.txt with an old one for Polaris which i made a few changes to. Here is the default.txt i use:

set MTYPE 1723
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz

08.16.2009: Edited the panel type line, heard some had some problems with it.
PS: First boot takes very long time! (Up to 10 minutes.) Do not abort it!
I only modified the default.txt so I'm not shure everything works. I'm only fourteen years old, and i barely have a clue about what I'm doing, so don't ask me questions about anything related to the other files, I did not touch them. I hope someone with more knowledge than me can provide a package with all the files and optimize it for the HTC Polaris.

Pretty much everything...
Remember all you have to do after booting Android is to reboot your phone and you'll be back in Windows Mobile.
The android working on for over a year and still not resolved with wlan and camera.se sees a major problem.can not solve?

Look at the default.txt posted in the first post. You have to set the resolution to 480x320 and lcd.density=160 . This is posted several times!

But major problem for me : I can't get my contacts from SIM card.
EDIT : and after a reboot under win mobile, if I want to launch it again it seems to boot correctly but I have a squizzy screen during load and when it come back from sleeping mode I only see the console. The graphic mode seemed to be in the background...

I must say it works well for me, also managed to download a gps soft from Market but does not pickup a signal

the latest build have improvement in speed, but sometimes still laggy especially when the sense ui is running. i do face a couple of problems too with this hero build. in my opinion, it is still not good for daily use yet.

Problem in Hero build
here are some of the problems i'm facing in the zen hero build:
1. sometimes it become laggy but sometimes become very fast,especially running sense ui.
2. i have contacts sync with google. but when someone calls in, only caller's number is appearing, but not the name, although the caller is in my contact list.
3. when send out sms, it returned with status saying that sms failed to send out, but the receipient actually received the sms.
4. it is very hard to wake up from speep mode..... need to press a couple of buttons to wake it up.
I have a problem with my Mega. sometimes the phone places a weather form an Bulgarian city but I am 400 km away in romania. can we fix some how this problem?

Same problem in belgium i live in Antwerp but i got the weather from hackney somewhere in london. The problem is that even googlemaps buts me in that location as long as it has no fix with the build in GPS. But even then i don't get the right weather in that position

Even i too faced this same issue...actually today i got a new SIM card and removed my old sim, updated the configuration (APN settings etc which the configuration wizard does)..
While i restarted the device with the orginial sim it should the correct location (chennai)
Earlier it showed some egyptian city (zohua?? or something like that) because i was in cairo last week using this mobile (purchased @ dubai int airport)
I love this mobile, trendy , slim and stylish with HTC custom built interface over 6.5 :-D
How to solve the problem
First, you have to go to
Settings > Location
Then you should be able to activate "Improve location service by collecting etc...." and the select "HTC Location Service"
NOTE: If you have "Improve location etc ... " inactive then you h ave to update the weather first from the "Weather" home tab.
The activate the GPS by starting a program that uses GPS. I've done that by starting IGO.
Then minimize the program and update the weather in home.
Worked for me

For me has been very useful.
I use for 2 devices: 1 Italian ROM ed 1 WWE Rom and the fix work like a charm for both devices.
I think you have a romanian ROM. In this case do you have to use the fix for Romania. If you have a WWE ROM you must use the fix downloaded from Europe.

If you have the phone coded on Orange (as I do), my guess is that we have to wait for the HardSPL to pass the vendor ID issue.
If anyone knows better, please let us know because that weather problem is very annoying.

Have T-Mobile German Version and no one of the Fixes works!
my wife has also the touch2 bought from t-mobile germany. it is not branded, but apparently t-mobile has done *something* to have a different verndor ID. So the weather fix does not install.
but the owner info fix did install nicely and also works and makes the waking up more fluent.

I'm using Samsung Omnia 7 and I've successfully updated my phone to 7.0.7392.0.
But when I tried to search some place in bing "MAP" application, it just goes the bing search screen. I don't when it's been launched like this.
Anybody can help me?

There is a search button in the app. Just tap it.

I know exactly what the OP is talking about... pressing that little search button opens IE Bing (at least on my Maps... and OP's it seems).

have a look at the following registry key on your wp7-device:
[HKLM\System\Search\LanguageSupport\xx-XX] (where xx-XX is your locale)
insert or set
RoutingSupported=dword:1
SearchSupport=dword:1
then it should be fixed!
confirmed the bing-search thing (within the maps application) by setting the value for RoutingSupported to 0 on my device --> hitting the search button opens bing search
changing it back to 1 gives me the ability to serch for destinations in the maps application...

p.s. your device has to be unlocked to use any registry editor - I used WP7 root tools by Heathcliff74 for changing the registry values...

with german (austria) I had the same issues as you have - but with the two registry keys set I'm able to search within bing maps...

I live in New Zealand and I set en-NZ input locales.
Still I can't search in bing map
Finally it works now on both devices, Samsung Omnia 7 and LG quantum

I had a look at HKLM\System\Search\LanguageSupport\en-NZ as well:

I just changed my regional settings to en-NZ on my device (with en-US as display language), opened bing maps and was able to search within the app (no fallback to bing search)... I was even able to navigate to a destination
What happens if you set your regional settings to en-AU?
Does it work then?

I had the same problem after setting
HKLM\System\Search\LanguageSupport\de-AT
GeocodeSupported : DWord=1
When I delete this entry, search is fine again
I can reproduce this error, when setting the registry key GeocodeSupported : DWord=1 again
seems like some regions (like de-AT or en-NZ) do not support all features of bing maps (en-US has some more features)...
Try to delete the GeocodeSupported key and search should be ok again...

check your GPS.conf. Sometimes they are set to check NTP servers in Italy by default. That could be causing your problem.

unzip the folder and in /system/etc you should find gps config file
open it and find a line NTP_server= try one of the links in your Gps config under miui, Remember to disable Use automatic assisted Gps. All these settings are found under settings>my location
