Greetings,
With all this porting Android to Touchpad thing, Ive been getting interest in that topic. I know it all involves Kernels,Bootloaders, Linux and crap.
I do have some knowledge in ASS and a minimum with Linux but I would like to start learning about all that so I could start messing with it myself and maybe contribute with the community in the future.
The thing is I dont even know where to start. If any of you devs can give me a hand on what topics should I cover and the tools i might need I'll be very thankful.
Thanks in advance.

I am really interested in this android development stuff but i have no previous experience in this stuff. Are there books out there that I can read I wanna learn from scratch like i guess linux and programming and every aspect of it. We have some talented developers on here so i was just wondering if you guys can guide me.
does anyone know?
I am finding myself spending much of my spare time messing with my android devices (HTC desire, Archos 70it) flashing roms, modding etc but the only knowledge i have of this is gleened from reading through this excellent forum.
Could anybody recommend a good book to start me off with android programming and development starting with the basics so that perhaps i could actually do something useful here?
This is what I am thinking aswell, I want to learn, but there is no real starting place!
HELP!
waiting for master..
Greetings
I am in the situation of needing to learn a lot more about what I am doing here and am having a hard time finding the information at a level I can understand,if some of you can help me I would be very appreciative
(1) how do I tell the various versions of Odin apart and what each one of them does
(2) how do I learn about flashing all the various other things that goes with the various roms IE: modems, themes, and so on
(3) how do I learn what the various things are and when to use them IE:kernals and stuff
yes I know I am new here,I also have add ( and I am also very unfamiliar with the inner workings of programming in general,,I was going to learn more about computers while I was in high-school but the instructor felt punchcards were above his abilities to instruct us on {slight exaggeration not much})
thanks in advance
charles
and I have been “lurking” here for about a month, spending between 2 and 8 hours a day reading/studying on this site,,honestly
[edit] I am able to find themes kernals and whatever but I have no idea what to do with them,,some sources say to flash with clockworkmod but I have no idea how to do this,I am sure it is easy if you know hope, unfortunately I do not
Read the Linux bible, that's a great start.
thanks for taking the time to reply,,not sure that reference will be of assistance but will attempt to check it out
It will be more efficient to read the sticky GUIDE in the forums of a specific model.
thank you for taking the time to post a comment,,I have read the stickies in all the captivate forums and general forums,, I am trying to get directions to someplace that can be just a little more clear,, but am beginning to understand why so many people ask questions that seem "stupid"
Hello Everybody
First Off... Yes im new, But im not here to just take information and leave, i really want to get into the whole "Developer" scene
YES, I've searched the forums already, but not gotten a pin point answer.
Anyway, I'm COMPLETELY new to programming, I've read around a bit, and i know i need some java knowledge to begin with? So I'm guessing that's my
So i really don't want to lean Too Much Java than needed to android development, or too less in fact.
So im looking for some links to begin with that.
Maybe i could get a step by step list of links that i should go through to begin developing applications for the android platform.
I came across this
[Sorry im not allowed to post links, but its the "Learn Java for Android Development" Series of tutorials on "Mobile tuts+"]
But it seems like its not for the beginner, but im willing to overlook that if you think its a good starting point
Thanks For taking the time to help me

Personally, I would start as simple as possible to get a feel for the whole thing. Maybe something like this: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/android-application-development-for-dummies-cheat-.html This way you get familiar with the whole process, not just how to code.
Just my opinion. Good luck!
I did come here for the same as to be developer and here are some links to begin with the development in Android. These links will provide you insight and good basic examples and also some in-depth knowledge needed for you to develop apps for android.

So I want to eventually develop ROMs for the android platform but I don't know where or how to start educating myself. I'm actually learning c++ right now as a starting point for my major and future career. I know c++ is a good starting point for having a basis in understanding programming but what tools and knowledge will I need to start in the android development community?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

For starting to develop ROM's I would recommend starting off by learning how to compile AOSP from source using Google's official guide . You can use your c++ to develop Android apps using the Android Native Development Kit (NDK) which you can learn about here. If you have any more questions by all means please let me know I'll be more then happy to help you out .
Wow that was helpful! Thanks you sir. I will definitely come to you if I have more questions!
