[Q] Problem with backing-up my current system (CWM) - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I've just rooted my TF, everything went fine (thanks to brk for his great RootingKit ).
But one problem: I want to backup my current 'setup' before I flash any custom-ROM. From my Galaxy S I know the possibility to backup the whole system with CWM, and it's working there - but not with my TF.
I get this message(s):
ClockworkMod Recovery v3.1.0.1 (solarnz-R3-230511-1902
Can't mount /sdcard
Click to collapse
And I can't mount it manually under mounts and storage -> mount /sdcard --> leads to the same message (Can't mount /sdcard, Error mounting /sdcard).
Any ideas?
Greets,
LB

do you have a SD card in the transformer?

No, do I have to? Ok, I'll try it with an external sd.
EDIT: Now it works, thank you very much!

I had that problem as well, stumped me until I put an external card in. The rationale is that you wouldn't want your backup on the internal drive, it's better practice to keep it separate and removable. Kinda like how you don't backup your PC onto another partition of the same drive.

Yeah, you're right, but I've already backuped some smartphones and none of them needed an external card for doing this.

It's not good to backup to internal storage, what if you're phone freeze or something and required a full wipe/factory reset?
All your backup data will be wipe too.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

On my Evo everything backs up to /sdcard by default, which is the removable card under the battery. Not sure about other smartphones, but if they're not saving to a remote directory (something that doesn't get wiped during a wipe) then they're putting your backups in a rather un-smart place. I'm sure it's all figured out on a by-device basis, of course. Why am I continuing this thread?

[Q] Dalvik/Chache/User data wipe?

So I'm about to install Tiamat's new ROM (I really want the init.d scripting functionality, plus it can't hurt to get up-to-date) but I can't remember if wiping my user data wipes out the /sdcard/ mount on my xoom. I've got 15gbs in there in all kinds of random stuff and I'd rather not wipe it if I don't have to.
What I THINK is that the Dalvik/Cache/User data wipe that I do before I install the ROM will do what it would on my phone - simply wipe everything that isn't on the /sdcard/ partition. Is this correct? I sure hope so.
Yes, that is correct. It won't touch your SD card.
Just to be certain...
Ok, but to be clear, I don't actually HAVE an sdcard, just the bigass bit of internal memory mounted AS /sdcard/. It won't mess with that right?

If you are asking about the user data wipe you will have to do I order to flash thetiamat rom,
ummm yes, it will wipe that (internal storage) but not wipe your external/removable sdcard.
Damn. Ok, well, I'll just back all of that up to the computer then. It'll take a while.
You need an sdcard to install the rom though.

Nope
Ok, so, like I thought, the "wipe data/factory reset" option in ClockWorkMod Recovery does NOT format the /sdcard/ partition, even though it is actually physically located on the internal storage.
Because of this I was also able to use the internal storage to store the tiamat*.zip rom file and flash from the internal storage mapped to /sdcard/. I'm now going to attempt to restore all of my settings and apps via Titanium Backup.
Thanks anyway guys. You did inspire me to do a full backup of my /sdcard/ partition onto my computer at least.
Sorry guys. I was way off. I was even smug about it. Well, as it turns out, you do need an SD card. Check out my post here to see what happened (a lot of dumb bad stuff): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152121

[APP] swapsd beta: Samsung

Tested by me on the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit only. (I'm told it works on the Galaxy W). If your device's /system/etc/vold.fstab file matches the attached original Galaxy Exhibit fstab file, it may work for you as well. Note: This app is not compatible with CyanogenMod. Root is required.
A common complaint about some Samsung Gingerbread phones is the fact that they mount the relatively small internal sd memory as /mnt/sdcard and this memory is treated as the phone's primary removable storage by some apps, ignoring the "real" removable sd card that Samsung refers to as "/mnt/sdcard/external_sd".
This simple gui allows you to swap the two so your larger "external sd" is mounted as "/mnt/sdcard/" and the smaller sd internal memory is mounted as "/mnt/sdcard/external_sd".
This is done by changing a file called vold.fstab in your phone's /etc folder. The original device vold.fstab file is backed up to /etc/vold.fstab.backup when this app first runs. Your data on /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/sdcard/external_sd is not touched in any way whatsoever. Root is required. Easy install: copy the apk file to your SD card and open with a file manager.
Please nandroid backup before testing!
If you get "Unknown Error, Contact Developer" you are more than likely not properly rooted! This app requires Superuser and Busybox to properly function!
Please note that if you've already moved existing apps to SD or existing apps have placed support files on SD, swapping mount points is not a good idea. Uninstall these apps, then reinstall after swapping.

So has anyone had success using this on the Exhibit II/4G or is it really just for the older Exhibit or am I just mis-reading the title?
I'd like to make the switch since the "internal" sd situation is rather silly and I just picked up a new SDHC card for my phone.
so the app is for swapping
and wt abt the txt ??? is it the original or the custom for swapping ??????
Works on any rom?

The fstab.txt is the original from the Galaxy Exhibit. It's attached so you can compare it to the /system/etc/vold.fstab on your phone. If the two match, this app may work for you.

So far.
Ok, a question as I learn more and more about the Galaxy Exhibit.
I am testing one, have some time to return if the coverage is not what I need, so I have installed my apps from my other phone, and just moved the SD card over, since it had some zips and apks that I wanted.
Since some of the directories exist already and are used by apps, while others have been recreated on the internal sd of the phone. My thought was to install the swapsd apk, immediately physically move all files from the internal sd to the actual sd card by activating the USB connection. Then disable USB, the swap is active, the media scanner will run, and the phone should see everything on /sdcard and the /ext_sdcard will be clean, except for what I left in the /usb_storage directory.
I tried mounting in recovery under mounts, mount usb storage, but it can only see one virtual drive and not both, whereas activating from the phone, both show.
Is that correct, or am I missing something? And obviously, in recovery, the partitions stay they same since the script is not running.

Samsung's stock recovery only sees the internal storage, not removable. ClockworkMod sees both. You can get cwm here.

That is from within CWM from that link, maybe my old XP laptop is playing games. Is that implying that I should move files in recovery?
I also find a swapsd01.zip and a swapsd.apk, same, just different application method?

I've attached a screenshot to the OP, hopefully that will help. It's pretty simple:
Root is required. Run the app, you'll see four buttons, Help, Default, Swap, Reboot.
To swap sd and external_sd press Swap.
To return to default, press Default.
Once you press either of the buttons above, press Reboot.
For instructions, press Help.

No. I misunderstood your post. To mount your /sdcard (internal) in cwm mount /sdcard. To mount your removable sd do mount /emmc.

Well, I got it done. I had to do it a little different, more lengthy, more secure. Backed up both partitions to my computer. Activated swapsd, rebooted to recovery, but could not mount both simultaneously. So I mounted the new /sdcard that is removable and moved what was backed up on the computer from the previous internal card to it. Rebooted and then cleaned up everything for duplicates. Thanks for the help again.

CWM 6.0.1.0 cant backup to local SD?

Hi,
I tried to run a nandroid backup & I am getting this error message:
Unable to find mounted volume: /sdcard
error finding an appropriate backup handler
I then tried to mount the SD card using CWM, that didnt not work but I can mount my external card & perform a backup - but it takes much much longer.
Any ideas why this would be?
I am running the stock ICS rom that is rooted. I did try to upgrade to a JB rom & updated the modem and rpm to a JB one. I dont know if that is the issue.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Rich
Are you using an SDXC card? If so, try formatting it to FAT32 using this guide (I used the GUIFORMAT.EXE program to do it): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735. I have a 64GB SDXC card in mine and couldn't see it in recovery (or in AOSP ROMs) until I did that.
I am not using a SD card at all anymore. I am sort of stuck. I want to try another rom but I want a nandroid backup before I start messing around so I have somewhere to get back to.
I tried deleting .android secure but that did not help.
Any ideas on what I could try?
When I backup it says:
no /sdcard/.android_secure found skipping backup of applications on external storage.
no /sd-ext found,skipping.
Complete
My backup (which by the way says its in 1970) is only about 30 megs which seems way to small to be a real backup.
Thanks,
Rich
That's the backup. They use blobs that store common info so backups seem small. My stock backup is only 20.82 mb

[Q] Data2sd internal storage

So i am on CROMI 3.4.4. and i installed data2sd. I was wondering are you suppose to see you internal storage when you plug the tf700 into you computer? It is weird because i see my fat32 and my ext4.... or is that normal?

You need to flash a kernel (included in the data2sd 3.4.x mod for CROMI) and you should see an sdcardi mount point that is you old internal storage.

I have CROMI and I can only see the internal card through the root explorer. Not a big deal to me. I can move things around as needed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33431910&postcount=1 NOTE: I've officially thrown in the towel on the sdcardi USB support on CleanROM. I don't know if it's changes by ASUS or by Scott, but it just does not work. I was able to figure CM out because I could look at the source code on Github and trace the exact changes needed. We don't have source for the stock ROM and I haven't been able to fix it without.
Yes currently PCs can't see the sdcardi mount point.
Blame Asus - but realistically your tab was not built to work this way so it is not entirely unexpected and one of things you will have to give up when going to data2sd

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering how Titanium Backup was able to create a link to the internal storage (it's called data2 for me) when I connect the TF700 to the computer. There's a data2 folder that leads to a TitaniumBackup folder I created on the sd card, but when I use root browser to look at the same directory, the data2 folder is not there. Is there a way to emulate this so I can access the internal storage from my PC? Sorry if the answer was posted already, but I just can't find the solution for the life of me.

I believe you're talking about 2 different folder here. Once you use your sdcard as data2sd, you have 2 partitions, 1st partition is fat32 and 2nd partition which is ext4. When you connect the tablet to your PC, your PC only see the fat32 partition, it can't see the second partition which is ext4. Your Titanium backup probably use the fat32 partition. The only way you could see the INTERNAL storage is using ES file explorer or Root explorer file browser. Currently there is no way to access the internal storage from your PC.

No, I am quite certain that my Titanium backup folder is NOT on the fat32 partition. When I look at my data2 folder with a file browser, it leads to the ext4 partition, which contains my backup folder.

I'm kind of confuse, but here are the principles for data2sd:
1) you can't use your PC to see the internal storage
2) Root browser or something similar can see the internal storage, ext4 and fat32.
Hope I hit the right spot!

Thanks for replying quickly. Just to clarify, I'm not seeing the internal storage as a separate partition. I'm seeing it as a folder in the ext4 partition that links to the internal storage when I connect it to the computer. I did a little more testing and found that I can see folders from the internal storage when I use titanium backup to create the folder. Unfortunately, I can only see files that titanium backup created and not files that I move into the folder. I hope this clears things up.

Titanium backup should already have its backup folder in internal storage and once you switched to data2sd, you should also have another Titanium backup on the ext4 folder. It's not a good idea to have Titanium backup to use either internal or ext4 partition. It should only use the fat32 partition (on your external SDcard), if something happened to the OS, will not impact your backup and you can access this fat32 partition while on data2sd or return back to your regular setup.

why not? what wrong?, it's a big risk if you backup to internal or ext4 external. These can be wipe when you format data or full wipe (sometime you have no choice in order to recover a bootloop), so you MUST backup to the fat32 partition. If it's not working for you then you may need to reformat your card or something. Titanium backup should work fine.

I appreciate the advice, but to get back on topic.... The internal storage initially did not have a backup folder. I made one via Titanium Backup and changed the default backup folder (which was on my ext4) to the new one (which is in the internal storage). This somehow made a link to the internal storage when I connect the device to the PC. I can see the backups I made from the computer. Unfortunately, any other file I try to copy over to the backup folder via root browser can't be accessed and is not seen on the computer. I hope this clears things up a bit.

How old is your external SD card? If you've been writing to it a lot, it might be going bad. SD cards have a limited life span. The more you write to it (and in bigger chunks), the more it "wears down" the SD card.
You might want to try and reformat it and do a chkdsk on it to see if it finds any bad areas on it.

Never thought of that! I myself have never used ROM Manager to backup my ROM image. Sorry about steering you in the wrong direction. I had assumed ROM Manager worked regardless.
