[Q] Good 32gig card to store movies? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running out of space on my Xoom and need to get a card for more storage. Currently I have some Sandisk 8 and 16 gig (class 2 and 4) that I've used to keep some MKV files (made via DVDCatalyst), but since I'm "full", I'm looking to get a 32gig card...
I know from booting my Nook Color off MicroSD, that random read/write matters, varies between cards, and the Class doesn't exactly matter... However the sequential read/writes usually fall in line with the class ranking. Since I'm just going to store movies (aprox 2gig per MKV file) and maybe a few MP3's or JPG's.. will poorer random read/writes make any difference for play back?
I'd like to buy locally if possible (so that means Best Buy, Staples, Compusa, Officemax, Officedepot, Radioshack, VZW store, etc). Only online I'd go with would be Newegg.com.
BestBuy has this PNY CL10 32gig PSDU32G10TEFM1 for $59.99 -> http://www.bestbuy.com/site/PNY+Tec...026197&st=3026197&cp=1&lp=1&slref=10&slloc=01
Newegg has this Sandisk CL4 32gig SDSDQM-032G-B35N for $54.99 (free 2day shipping) -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820171487
I've seen other brands, like Kingston, Adata and Centon also available for around the same price locally (slightly cheaper on line).
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Recently I got a 32GB Class 10 micro sdcard from MemStik. I usually use Sandisk but they are prohibitively expensive at this size/class. MemStik was very highly rated and reasonably priced. As soon as I got it installed I tested it out and it was authentic, and benchmarked quite well. Holds a lot, of course and with fast reads plays videos very well. The card also came with an assortment of readers/adapters.

On edit, I see that some of the prices you quote are also quite good. You have a few good ones to choose from.

are the new microsdch cards compatible with the touch pro
I've never heard of those, but micro sdhc cards work fine , I'm using an 8mb one
i think sdhc cards are min 4GB dont think anybody feel that 8MB cards are that high capacity
i dunno....it's pretty high capacity for something smaller than my little fingernail
I'm about to purchase a microsd for my HTC Touch pro and i'm between :
Kingston 8gb SDHC class 4
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=170972
and
SanDisk 8gb SDHC class 2
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=158255
and
Expansys 8gb SDHC class 2
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=164646
Now the question is will the HTC support any of the 3 and why the heck is the class 4 kingston lower cost than the other two seeing as its supposed to be faster ? :/
Dunno. Kingston are usually cheaper than sandisk anyway, and i wouldn't touch Expansys' own brand stuff with a bargepole.
Oh and yeah, it should work fine.

Yep, they'll all work. Go for the Kingston. Class 4 is indeed faster. Probably cheaper because it's newer stock (you can tell from the Expansys stock code).
Expansys never seem to reduce prices on accessories like these. They go in at a certain price, and stay at the same price 'til they're all gone. By the way, hold out for a couple of weeks (hopefully?) and you should be able to pick up a 16Gb MicroSD for about £50...
Oh, and if you hit Google, you can usually find a £10 Expansys voucher knocking around for purchases over £20...
EDIT: Just looked at the links, The SanDisk one is Class 4 as well, so I'd probably go for that one, as they're the same price, and I've had loads of flawless SanDisk cards over the years...

Yeah, Expansys are kinda expensive. Try mobymemory, I've always had an excellent experience with them.

8GB Class 4 SanDisk WITH card reader, loads cheaper. Plus when they say it's in stock, you can be pretty certain that it actually is.
Hi, regarding the different speed classes of the micro sdhc cards:
Does it always make sense to use the fastest card and does this really affect the performance according the cards speed class?
I mean does anybody know about the maximum speed of the card interface of the touch pro? I'm thinking to buy the SanDisk Ultra (class 6)
Within the device itself, the class of the card won't matter too much. A class 4 is probably comparable to a class 6, and certainly wont make a difference when it comes to playing mp3s or viewing pictures. But a class 6 card will certainly make file transfers faster on to/off of the card using a PC (best results if you use a separate usb/card adapter and not "disk mode" on your Touch Pro).
For reference, I'm using A-DATA Class 6 8gb MicroSDHC, works perfectly and no errors. Available for $31 at Newegg (if you're in US).
sandisk class 4 sdhc microsd 8 GB is the fastest at the moment and you can get it for 33 euro.. works fantastic..

[Small Review] SanDisk 32GB MicroSDHC (Class 2)

Hey guys,
got my new SanDisk 32GB MicroSDHC (Class 2) Card yesterday and it is performing great so far.
But before that, I'd like to warn you that there are tons of fake cards floating around.
I bought a 32GB Card one week ago and it turned out to be fake:
h**p://img517.imageshack.us/img517/6867/unbenannt3kj.jpg
I've tested to write the full capacity to the card but apparently this card only holds up to 1,9GB.
DON'T BUY FROM EBAY OR OTHER "SMALL BUSINESS SHOPS" You'll most likely get a fake card.
Really pissed after this experience I decided to buy from a reliable computer shop and spend more money and received my 32GB Card yesterday, and what can I say? It's better than I expected for a Class 2 card.
Check out the results here:
h**p://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4060/s32gbsdhc.jpg
As you can see, this card is genuine and you can write up to ~30GB to it.
The write speed with 5,21mb/s is pretty good for a Class 2 Card. Also the read speed is quite decent with 14 mb/s
This is more than sufficient for HD video recording and all the other things you'd wanna do with your Galaxy S.
I didn't expierence any lags with my phone using this card. Switching between photos, music etc.... all goes very smoothly.
Here's also a HDTune (3.50) shot for you guys interested in the read iops:
h**p://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1818/s32gbsdhc2.jpg
Verdict: All things considered, I think this card performs fairly well without slowing down my Galaxy S. Watching tons videos/photos, listening to a huge music library and not having to worry about storage is really great.
The only downside of this card is the price (I've paid 108€) but considering the fact that the iPhone with 32GB is bloody expensive and with this card you would have up to 40GB of storage on your Galaxy S, this card is really a bargain and I fully recommend it.
That's great! I'm also considering to buy one the 16gb class4 version, but it seems difficult to find in Europe.
Where did you get your 32GB card?

some space will be taken by the file allocation table when the card is formatted as with all drives from harddrive to memory cards.
also the 32gb is somewhat less than 32gb in true storage size

I've bought it in Germany (ARLT Computer).
talking about memory and disk stuff,
32GB=32.000.000.000 bytes
wich is, 30517,58 MB or 29,80 GB
this is for the simple fact
a 8GB hard disk contains 8.000.000.000 bytes
a 8GB ram stick contains 8*1024*1024*1024=8589934592 bytes
That's a lot of cash considering a non-fake Toshiba Class 2 16gb is currently selling for £17.99 delivered in the UK?
€108 equates to about £90!
32GB cards are currently considerably more expensive than 2 x 16GB cards.
Where's the deal on that 16GB in the UK btw...?
So you can use micro SD HC cards with the galaxy s? I was told that you had to use an adapter because the device only has a micro SD slot? Sorry if this is a silly question, i haven't really dealt with external flash storage that much apart from my old sony ericsson walkman phone which used stick pro duo or something like that.

Er, that depends. To me having a 32GB card is well worth the extra expense, may not be to others, but its not a black and white issue as you suggest.

Yea, it doesn't lag; at least there is nothing what I would describe as "laggy".
It does take some time to load 100s of photos on the gallery app, but I think this is quite normal.
At least if I view a hires picture, it opens up near instantly. Switching between pics and focusing also happens very quickly.
I'm happy with it so far. Having used this card for more than two months I don't have any complaints at all and I fully recommend it.
How is 720p hd recording with the card? Try it and see if the recorded video is stuttering. Ty.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
it records to the internal SD

And they are sandisk, and not some cheap one's which won't do over 9MB/s?
the first 2 brands are actually better and faster for less than Sandisk
yes sandisk is sandisk, they are always expensive
Can someone please elaborate on this class thing? I noticed that Toshiba SD class has different ranks, but none of the sandisk cards I find says anything about read write speed. Thanks.
Depending on the class, that's how fast the write transfer is I think. Class 2 = 2mbps, Class 6 = 6mbps. I don't think that's the literal translation though, better wikipedia it up.
I personally will find it very difficult to use a 16GB Class 2 card since I do a lot of transferring between computer and phone. I transfer videos, music, comics, and very nice photos.
Is there any way to tell the class from the package of a sandisk micro SD card? I have read plenty of stories about how people ordered a class 6 SD card online, only to find that it is actually a class 2.
on real authentic ones it's printed on the package inside the sealed plastic, also in the card itself
specially any model that is Class 4 or better
if it's not marked on the SD card then it's a Class 2
ah I see. Thanks.

anywhere in particular, Im in brampton and would like a 16GB card for cheap, canadacomputer has one for 44$ but maybe you know somewhere for cheaper? Would it make sense to buy two faster 8GB cards and hide one under the back cover somehow? (im sure a card is thin enough to fit under there no problem?)

Does the class only affect speed when copying files, or does it matter when using apps and such, watching videos, viewing photos? I ask because Class 6 is really expensive in my country

As far as I know it is only write speed. Meaning when you copy data TO your card, read speed on my card is a lot faster then write speed.
But that also means that if you record 720p video to your sd card it matters if your card is fast enough...
But just get yourself a SANDISK CLASS 2. as I said I have no problems with speed of that card..

16GB SD card

i was thinking about getting a 16 gb sd card i found this card on ebay and was wondering if anyone can tell me if it would work with the phone as well if it was good. thank you

It looks like a good deal for me. It will work well for the phone and it is good if it's not a counterfeited one. Sandisk MicroSD are known to be counterfeited a lot, especially on eBay.
Btw, you don't need a class 10 card. For whatever you do with your phone, you don't need to write in 10MB/s. 1080p video from the G2, for example, has a bit rate of only 2.5MB/s.
edit: I found the same microSD, sold by the same merchant, and cheaper at Amazon UK

The cheapest seller (currently Onebo, selling at £15) has only a 3.5/5 star rating, only 25% positive review. Some of the buyers complain that the microSD doesn't even have a Sandisk logo. I am not quite sure you want to buy from this seller.
I really recommend clicking the "63 new" line, them scroll down choosing Amazon UK as a seller. It's more expensive, but you're sure that you don't buy a fake card.
Regarding 64GB and class 10, it's totally your choice. 64 GB sure can store lots of stuff, and you can copy (from the computer) to the card quite fast.
In the other hand, 64GB class 10 card is about 3-4 times more expensive than the 32GB class 4 counter part. Not the most cost efficient option. In additional, the phone won't be able to utilize the class 10 bandwidth in most of your daily activities.
Edit: I bought a 32GB class 4 Kingston for HTC Vision, at $30 (around £15) shipped and sold by Amazon.com

The only two manufacturers that make 64GB cards are Kingmax (who built the card in the first place) and SanDisk (who doesn't make anything above a Class 6), and neither cards are Class 10. I'm actually pretty pleased with the 64GB card in my Doubleshot.
I just got one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00569J5E2/ref=ox_ya_os_product
Samsung 16GB class 10 for £17.
4EXT backs up 3 times quicker than the supplied Samsung 8GB class 2,
GTA3 1.1 is a bit smoother when driving quickly
It appears the UI and system apps that touch the SD are a bit more snappy. ie, gallery.
They do a 32GB bit I think the max speeds are a bit lower.

About dealextreme: buying from that site is pretty much a hit-and-miss. I have actually bought a lot of stuff from there. They're cheap, but also terribly slow at shipping. They also don't usually have goods in stock, and they backorder from the suppliers. NEVER buy there if you are in hurry, never.
Especially about memory cards, you never know if you're gonna get a genuine or a fake item. They just seem to ship whatever they have in stock. You might be lucky or not
Just buy from Amazon if you can. I have bought a Samsung 16GB class 10 for my Desire Z for 20€, and the increase in speed while loading the gallery is noticeable.

could you post the code of the sd?
The code is MB-MPAGAEU
On Amazon.it is right now in offer at 17.40€. That's insanely cheap, IMHO.

If you are shopping online be careful of fakes if you decide to go for sandisk (there are a lot of fake sandisk cards) You are also going to want a UHS-1 card for fthe faster transfer speeds, especially if you plan to load app data on the card.
I personally like the Samsung Evo microSD line, since I am not in Europe I can't give you prices over there, but they are between $90-$140 USD in the States at nation wide retailers (far far less at more specialized stores, ones I trust)

John.
I have to ask because it will bug me. What are you planning on putting on your tab that you need 128GB of microSD space. I could easily understand if more applications actually took advantage of app2sd but even rooted there are some heavy issues with getting it to sortof work. Are you a massive music or movie fan that needs a large collection on your travels away from your home data storage solution (nas, pc, dvd boxes, ect....)?
I have my 64gb filled with my Anime episodes video`s, I wish i had the money for an 128gb, but not at the moment.
