Yep, I noticed this but I guessed that it was because I modded my values in CyanogenMod screen settings to lower than the stock HTC value.
In other words, don't worry about it - I'm not!
thanks for the answer.
But i have this on all Roms, and with the stock Rom the same problem.
I usually turn down the brightness and that stops the flickering.
I was getting the same thing and ended up replacing the handset under warranty. New one has been fine. Maybe the initial batch was a bit dodgy??

Now you all have me worried!
Even though my phone is technically second hand, it's actually brand new (the charger hadn't even been taken out of the heat sealed packet!)
So as you can guess, I don't have a receipt

Yes i think it was a bad batch. my device have a Misaligned screen, and the Flickering Display bye reducing the brightness...
Its go for Repair now.
I hope the Repair center see the flickering and replace the phone.

I have two devices and both have screen burn.. in fact all desire s i have seen burn the status bar.. if screen is on for more than 5 minutes. don't worry about it
Yupp, also having it. Less obvious since I've switched to 25% brightness, but it is temporary, so I'm not bothered much.
happens here also. Try to apply a white image for some time, it helps LCD screens

Ehm... If you need to perform these steps to see this screen burn... Then how much of a problem is it? The subject of this topic suggests that this is a huge problem while in fact it is hardly noticable.
In normal day to day use you will probably never have any problem. I have never noticed the problem with my Desire S
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't get screen burn on an LCD screen (which is what the Desire S has), only plasma screens get screen burn.
Yeah smart guy. Turn on brightness 100% then run i.e. skype and leave it in main menu for some time, then return to home screen and tell me what You see.
Good thing is, that it is only temporary and screen returns to normal fairly quick.

If it doesn't last, it ain't screen burn. It's image retention.
Well... Then Desire S suffers from image retention. Anyone cares?

So...
In this thread it seems a known problem, yet some people don't notice it that much with normal use. I also have this problem, and I play chess a lot where I keep the screen on for quite a while before switching away. I keep seeing the board on the homescreen.
I know it's not permanent, it disappears, and yet, it's quite annoying for me. I have a few questions:
- Does this screenburn/image retention get worse over time?
- Is this an issue which only affects one batch of phones?
- Can this issue be resolved by replacing the screen? ...
- ...and would that be covered by the warranty.

well, i'm sure screenburn/image retention is not covered by warranty, because sooner or later it will happen to the most phones, and i think htc knows that.
And i think it does not get worser over time. i just experienced that image retention was completely gone when i flashed a new rom, with different interface. And when i returned back to my old rom today, i quickly had image retention again. i do absolute not know if this relates to each other but i definetly recognized a difference.
i'm sorry if i did write unclearly, i try my very best
I've just flashed back to sense after being on miui and the screen 'retention' is worse than ever. Don't know if its just cos there is more black on white or some thing to do with sense itself.

just my oppinion but i believe that what we are all experiencing is neither screen burn nor image retention. i actually believe that it is software related. why? well, if u do a thorough test you will notice that if the "burnt" image of the statusbar is observed on solid gray backgrund, the clock changes. i mean, without going to homescreen or whatever, if grey image is displayed and the burnt statusbar is visible, the minutes change as they pass. at the top of my head i actually believe that it's a transparency glitch. or maybe that's only true in my case..

Had my Desire S for 9 months before I sold it for an XE, and I had the same problem with the phone. What I found out was the splash screen of XDAforums is the best to see if you have screen burn or not. My phone's issue was worst on top of the screen, where the notification var is, whenever I ran xda forum I could see clock, antena and WiFi visible on the starting picture of it.
I also noticed that this issue gets worse by time, and the day I sold my Desire S it was in the worst situation ever. I could even burn the keyboard on my screen after like 5 minutes of chatting on Gtalk.
What I think is, Desire S LCD panel has this defect and this could happen to anyone sooner or later; however, for those who use their phones more intensively it appears sooner.
I suggest getting your phones to a service care center and ask for a LCD replacement, because it'll get worse soon.

I get the screen burn quite often when playing Wordfeud...I just keep a white image to leave on for a while.
Hi guys,
my DS did some strange stuff lately. It began with the screen staying black when I woke it up (hardware buttons did turn on and touchscreen also worked). I thought it was a software issue, because after a few on and offs the screen usually worked again. Also, this never happened when the phone was charging.
But a few days ago the screen never turned back on again, even when charging. I got a new battery but still no change. It won't even turn on when booting or when going to fastboot/ hboot.
Does anyone have an idea what is broken? I think my best guess is to have a look at these other screen replacement threads, but I wanted to ask first because the screen seemed to have gradually become broken, which confuses me. I didn't think something like that was even possible. Also, I can't return it since I bought it used and in Germany (DS is USA exclusive).
Thanks for help
Most certainly hardware as it is black when in bootloader and ROM. Best guess is the LCD but could also be the main flex the likelyhood of any thin else is fairly small.
Do read up on the screen replacement threads as this phone is one pain in the ass, you also need to be aware of what LCD to buy as there were different ones and they are not compatible.

Thanks for the tips. Screen might be still ok since it went out gradually, could be a defective contact since it also went on and off randomly. But I guess there is no way to only replace this contact, too complicated to find out... I will see.
Yeah, I had a look at these threads already, thank you
I had a program that I moved to the sd card that would cause the screen not to come on and would have to do a battery pull. When I moved the app back to the phone, the problem stopped.
(Walgreens app)
It has happened again since, so it may be another app I have to track down. Or I may be looking at faulty screen trouble too.
Sent from my MyTouch 4G Slide using Tapatalk 2
even if an app on sd were the cause of this it certainly couldnt make the screen blackout while in recovery and bootloader mode. to the best of my knowledge it has to be a hardware fault if screen wont turn on in bootloader... but well ive been proven wrong in the past
Well since I had problems with the screen turning off before when it did work in recovery, there might be a connection to daswerk's case. However I kept all my apps on the internal SSD and do remember checking it. Also, my screen turned back on sooner or later or when I played around with the keyboard.
However later it was off even in recovery mode. I did disassemble my DS lately (and broke my screen like seemingly everyone else hehe) and am now waiting for my new LCD screen to arrive in Germany from the states haha. Shipping costs were higher than LCD costs, d'oh! Thanks again demkantor, you've been helping me indirectly with your posts in the other threads as well
So guys, screen arrived, reassembled my phone, switched it on aaand... black screen.
Graphic chip or motherboard may be broken. I'm thinking about a loose connection because screen turned off once in a while before it never got back on. I found a user by coincidence here on xda who reported the same problem.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Don't want to forsake my dearly loved DS :'(
Next most likely would be main flex cable

Are there other possibilities as well? I'm thinking about getting a whole replacement set so I can try everything shipping costs are high since I live in germany hmmf
btw, digitizer/ touchscreen doesn't seem to work either, is this another sign that main flex cable is the prolem?
There are always more possiblities I was just letting you know what I would replace next as the most likley cause.
Having multiple phones to exchange parts is a good idea and really about the only way to test different components
And yes have no digitizer working can be a sign of a bad flex as well

I run a cell phone repair company and we do quite a few repairs but this in particular HTC One X has us all stumped here. We do realize that there are 3 different versions of the dig/lcd and we have the correct part. But has anyone had problems with trying to replace the HTC One X dig/lcd assembly. It seems that after I put the new part on the lcd is black but the phone is still on. I even went back and put the old screen back on and it is still black. Prior to the repair the lcd worked fine. But just the digitizer was cracked. I have even went as far as changing the motherboard on the phone to a new one and am still having the same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Have you checked the ribbon length to make sure you do not have a break?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
It would seem to me as though it's just as simple as one of the connectors is not plugged in or just not plugged in properly, which is easy to do since one of them is on the underside of the board which I believe is the one for the screen itself.

Exactly. Seems like the only probable answer is that something was broken during teardown - either a cable or connector. Given the size of everything in there, it doesn't take much....
Did you ever find a solution to this?
I'm kind of in the same boat at the moment, BUT there's a silverish lining
In the midst of replacing a screen on my One X. Phone is obviously "on" (despite being in pieces on my desk), but n either the new or old screens will come on when I push the power button.
For a lark, I plugged the phone in, and did an 'adb reboot'
My splash screen comes up on the new screen just fine, as does the Viper Logo and my home screen and everything.... but once it shuts off the power button will NOT re-wake it up. At first I thought "I must have broken the power button" but I also forced a notification to it - which also typically wakes up the screen - and also saw nothing.
EDIT : Cancel that; for some reason the power button didn't work until I had the case back on. Grounding maybe? Either way, working fine now.
Some Ebay product page for a screen replacement said you should first power on the device with the old screen, then take the old screen out while the phone is running and put the new one in.
Maybe you should trie that. I'm not a hardware expert, so do some research before trying this and don't blame me if it doesnt work
That will only work if the screens not working. Op. It's difficult to narrow the issue in your situation. If the flex cables don't work, it's a short which would require much more advanced knowledge to fix.

Hey guys.
I have an SGS2 Skyrocket that boots but nothing ever shows up on the screen!
I held the power button and it does in fact boot the samsung logo never shows up.
The keys at the bottom light up but still nothing.
Seeing that everything worked i booted the phone into download mode to see if it would fix it (i still couldnt see anything, i was just going off of the vibrations)
So I decided to go ahead and flash back to stock GB from odin.
It went through successfully and it booted my phone back up.
Still nothing showing up on the screen...
Can someone please help me?
Sounds like a broken/cracked/bad LCD or digitizer problem.
Was it dropped? Left in direct sunlight? Leaving it back pocket and sitting on it? ...
So seek out a new LCD replacement. From your thorough explanation (awesome description of the problem!) It sounds like your logic board is fully functional.
So you should be good to go with a new LCD which runs around $100+/-$10 but check both eBay and amazon. And watch some youtube videos to see how the phone teardown works or pay a little extra to a repair shop to get it fixed.

It indeed sounds like you display is shot. If your phone is under a year old Samsung will replace it for about 160 bucks. If not then you can do it yourself. Here's an excellent photo write-up for the procedure:

The last one had cracked and i did replace it.
When i had turned it back on it was like this unfortunately.
Could it be a Hardware failure or something with the motherboard?

Hello XDA,
My Nexus 5 running CM12 5.0.2 nightly will not respond to the touches anymore infact when I press the power button to activate the display it acts as if someone is touching it randomly messing all the apps that are running and opening and closing many other things.
Furthermore it displays weird and burned lines throughout the screen. It was not dropped, no water went inside the device or anything. If it helps I did install the OTA updates that CM gives us.
I have also attached pictures so you may get a better understanding of my problem.
Thanks in advance.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news - but your screen is toast. Fortunately you can replace the touch and display components all at once.
http://www.amazon.com/Skiliwah-Digitizer-Assembly-Google-nexus5/dp/B00HN0U168
Here is what you need to perform the repairs - and here are the procedures for disassembly.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Disassembling+Nexus+5+Display+Teardown+-+liquid+damage/32410
Trust me, it's not that difficult. Unfortunately, it's a bit pricey ($60 for the screen and digitizer), nevertheless much cheaper than a new device or sending your device in for repairs.
Rma
Problem Solved
The screen isn't toast, neither is the digitizer. I have 2 of these phones. The parts which cause problems like this are the main board and the ribbon with the USB connector on it, which also attaches the screen & digitizer to the main board. One was showing lines exactly like this, & also no touch. I put a replacement main board in. Works great now. The other, wouldn't even turn on. I put the main board from the first phone in the second one, it still wouldn't turn on. I replaced the ribbon cable, it turns on and perfectly replicates the issue from the first phone. So now, I have one fully functioning LG Nexus 5, and another which turns on with the same problem as yours. This is good, I started out with 2 of them that were useless to me. So, it appears that your display and touch issues are caused solely by a bad main board. A replacement main board costs somewhere around $75. After swapping stuff around, I have 2 bad main boards, 1 bad USB ribbon & 1 working phone of 2. Not bad, not bad at all.
