and ideas on how to unlock nand on this phone?

SuperOneClickRoot.
Yeah i tried adb, super one click, and zroot. None of them worked, and for some reason everytime i try to start up root explorer, it crashes trying to get super user. I've tried all means of forcing super user to get onto the phone. No matter what it wont work. Mike thinks its Nand locked. Another thing i noticed is when I used super one click, i had two options at the top right hand corner that looked like names of my device. I can get my serial number with adb, and it shows it. Another darn problem is no drivers are out for this phone yet. Also have no idea of the LTE chip is interfering with this either. So come one come all dev and droid guru's help us out!
So basically I think this means we a need a custom recovery, flash image and stuff. Bah, that'll probably take like a month
K, also tried visionary rooting, which did some wierd ****. I rebooted and it seemed like i had root, but super user still didn't work. It fooled a couple programs into thinking i had root, but it would not let me "touch" the files on the phone. Even though it claimed I had r/w permission.

The Samsung Epic 4G drivers worked for me, also tried the rooting process used on the Epic whoever busybox says im rooted but that nand is locked, i downloaded Terminal emulator and it says im not rooted, also installing superuser not possible, I was able to install root explorer but not any good if doesnt let me delete the bloatware only read.
Yeah, busybox says the phone is rooted but nand locked.
superuser app was added to system/apps. however im not able to mount system/apps with R/W from root explorer. The rooting process seems to gain access to r/w the files but the apps cant.
seems 4G still have far distance from us...
Supposedly there's a work around for Nand locked, but the first one didn't work for me.
With the absolutely beautiful ADB exploit I use, titled rageagainstthecage (ratc), absolute ALL devices can be rooted. This is because it exploit is ADB which all devices use. There is an issue though. Some devices have a NAND lock which does not allow you to write to the /system mount. Because of this, you can’t copy su, sqlite or busybox to /system/bin. This creates some issues but there is a work around. For things that don’t need access to /system (like enabling non-market apps) I can use the ratc exploit to make those changes. If your device cannot use su in /system/bin then you can simple select a checkbox (as of v1.5) that says to use ratc.

This didn't work still for me. So the only other option was unrevoked, but when I went to the site, it listed only HTC. Kinda confused how using HTC roms is a work around for a samsung phone lol. Still need some master guru's help on this stuff.
I too have been trying and am unable to get nand unlocked, I would really love some other ideas. Anyone out there able to help?
I'm waiting 'till the $50 MIR on the 1st, then I'll jump in with both feet.
Some guy suggested to shell root > perm root > restart device. That doesn't work either. I also noticed something called "media scanner" that scans as the phone boots up, i wonder if that's preventing any modified files.
If anyone knows how NAND unlocking has worked for other phones (and im not just talking about what apps to run or what room to use) please contact me so that we can try a few things out and hopefully get a full root for everyone.
Supposedly Mr. Parker rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682&page=260
I'm asking him through both post and through private message if he could elaborate. Apparently he had trouble with getting Win 7 x64 to work, but it worked with Win Xp. I'm still not sure what drivers he used, and he said he had it not in debug mode. I tried in non debug, and my phone wouldn't even register. So hopefully he'll expand on how he did it. If not, back to the drawing boards, at least till we get a real pro in here.
Got my hopes up that even though we dont have full root yet, I would be able to get rid of the bloatware.
The SuperOneClick is able to get read/write access and send commands to the phone so I opened Root Explorer on the phone and then rand the superoneclick. As soon as the program mounted the phone with Read/Write I started clicking on the Mount R/W button in root explorer until it showed the app as having read/write access to the system/app directory. I tried deleting the Iron Man app and it said it was deleted successfully.
but then I checked and the app was still there loading root explorer agian then showed that the file was still there and had not been deleted.
Wow you managed to get root explorer to work? Mine just tries to obtain root, and crashes everytime i start it up now. I've tried to unroot, and uninstall and reinstall it. I used Linda manager to view the files on the phone, but like you if i deleted they would return on boot. That's why I think metro or samsung has some kind of media scanner that scans at start up, and it somehow reinstalls files, or prevents root. Can't confirm this yet because super user fails ;/
I've been trying also to get root. Programs often will think i have root access. as far as adb is concerned i do have root access till i dont something that requires it. I've been able to install root manager and look through some files. Im under the impression metro or samsung did install something odd, though im not sure the media scanner is it. Also the phone does not require root in order to install other-market software.
What do you mean programs "think" you have root? You mean you have super user? And what "programs" are you referring to? You can install root manager without a root yes, but in order to put it into "r/w" mode and delete the files from the phone itself, such as bloatware, you need root and Super user access. Most people here I hope are aware that you don't need to root to install "MOST" apps. There "is" apps that require root, and you cannot run them without root access.
Such as:
Titanium backup
Set CPU
Why do I want to root is like everyone keeps saying, to delete all the metro apps, and have "full" manufacturer control over the phone. That's the whole point of rooting. So far no one has rooted this phone PERIOD, or at least shown proof they were even able to. So any info you find regarding rooting please post it here.
Alright, so I tried what Mr. Parker did, and no go. Whether I ran super one click on Win 7 x64 (which was all in admin) or win xp, it would not install super user. In fact I noticed a couple of the files copied from super one click were already on the phone, and weren't able to be overridden. Which may relate to nand lock.
UPDATE: I have reach the file through "adb pull", however, the adb shell still prevent me from reading that file. Strange, but my problem is solved. Thank you herbthehammer!
UPDATE: I have adb into NS, but it isn't a root shell. so still can't access that file.
Hi all, I have a problem here.
I have a stock 2.3.4 Nexus S. Now I need to copy a file from /data/data to my PC.
I can't even see this file unless I root my phone. But rooting means wipe all the data and then I'll lose that file forever.
So....How can I get this file?
Any suggestion?
Thank you for reviewing my question.
What file?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I don't know for sure, I'm just guessing. If you booted into the bootloader, couldn't you adb into the phone with root access? Then copy that way? I can't imagine what file would be sitting there that would be important enough to copy it. I think the sd card might get wiped in an unlock. Wasn't there a guide to root and recovery without unlock?
Rooting the phone doesn't wipe your data, unlocking the bootloader does.
Try adb commands as suggested above.

Thank you for your reply!
It's a profile generated by an app. It seems only that app and the Android system can gain access to that file.
The guide to root and recovery without unlock? You mean this post? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931865
I think it only works for Android 2.3.3 and 2.3.2.
I'm interested in "adb into the phone with root access", just need some instructions.
Here are the directions and files used to fix this problem (do not type any of the "quotation marks"):
1. Download the .zip file from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YUYEMJNM
and put it on the root of your sdcard. (Do not unzip the file). Then rename it to PD15IMG.zip .
2. Download the miscnew file to your computer (uploaded as attachment to this post). Unzip it and place the miscnew.img file that was in the zip onto the root of your sdcard. You can delete the .zip file after you do this.
3. Boot your phone up like normal and connect your phone to your computer.
4. Make sure your sdcard is NOT mounted (but make sure those 2 files were copied to your sdcard).
5. Go into adb and type "adb shell"
6. Then type, "su"
7. Then type, "dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17"
8. Once this is done after about 5 seconds, turn your phone off and unplug from the computer.
9. Once the phone is off, hold down the volume-down key and the power button until you arrive at the bootloader. Once there, the phone should automatically start checking that .zip file you downloaded to the root of your sdcard. After its done checking, it will ask you if you want to continue, and just follow the prompt to say "yes" and YOU'RE DONE!
This guide was made by travisjames and was just put into my own words. His guide was a derivative of Apache14's OTA and Radio downgrade guide for the T-Mobile G2.
Also, thanks to Clarknick27 for tipping me off on how to get back into my phone after it was unbootable.

Ignore/Wrong thread...
two questions-
if i used gfree, do i need to undo gfree 1st? (you make no mention of rooting techniques, and if this undoes all those or not)
second, my phone, about a month ago, lost data connectivity on the usb port-- in other words, it charges fine, but i can not get any computer to pick it up any more to transfer files are use adb, which is a royal pain. -- can i use terminal emulator to accomplish your commands, or am I SOL ?
thanks
Yes, you need to undo Gfree.
Yes, you can run the commands from Terminal Emulator.
Added to Wiki.
thanks jack,
would the syntax be exactly the same as above via term em?
Yes, just skip the "adb shell" command.
Is this to undo 2.3.4 GB update and take it back to 2.2.1?
How do I undo gfree? And if I just run the pg15img will I keep root? I need a way to return to stock but rooted.

First question, Here is the thread you need to undo gfree (get s-on) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996 (about half way down OP)
Second question, no you will not keep root
witch stock rom do you want rooted, stock 2.3.4 can not be rooted right now
So... to summarize, this would be to revert back to Android 2.3.4, sense 3.5 STOCK, without root, eng. hboot, or s=off.
In other words, if you purchased a MT4G now, or received a replacement MT4G with 2.3.4.... Following these steps will give you this new gingerbread stock state (approximately).
Please confirm. Thanks!

Yes...check the 3rd and 4th post of this thread....
Just curious, so if I flash this ROM in recovery, will I lose root, s-off, etc.?
What I'm trying to do is flash the phone to the MT4G stock rom (which I assume this is), use gfree to sim unlock it, then revert back to my nandroid backup, so I wanna make sure this will not interfere with my root access before I proceed to flashing it. Thanks in advance to whoever answers me~!

You don't need to type adb shell because you are on terminal emulator.
Just type su to gain superuser access.
Then type dd if=/sdcard/miscnew.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17
Make sure you have the file miscnew.img in the root of your sd card.
Absolutely Perfect
I have looked and looked all over both XDA and the Interent in general. I was trying to restore my Glacier (MyTouch 4g) from stock 2.3.4 to stock 2.2. NOTHING worked. It got to the point that I didn't even remember everything that I tried. I followed this guide to the T. PERFECT!!! I am now back to having my phone exactly how I left the Tmo store with it.
I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!
Great work in helping people out that don't understand. And making it a less strenious process

Sorry, a complete noob to "gfree". I'm a new convert to GSM as I was with SPrint CDMA for 10 years until a couple weeks ago. I've rooted Samsing phones but never an HTC.
Anyways, I just purchased a MyTouch that had been rooted and loaded with Virtuous ROM. It's for my wife and she wants it back to stock. I tried all your directions exactly but still will not work. I'm assuming it's this "gfree" issue. I followed the link to the other thread but it's not clear on exactly what I need to do in my situation.
When I run the bootloader, it says bad or no such image... I have confirmed I have PD15IMG.zip and miscnew.img in the sdcard root directory.
Can someone please show me in simplified terms. Thanks!

If you are new to this rooting stuffs, i suggest don't go with methods, that have potential to brick your phone.
Just do this simple method, Follow the link in my signature, you will see a Rooted version of the stock 2.3.4 rom.
Just flash the Rom through your recovery.........no big deal.......easy way to get the stock feel.....
Follow the instructions carefully.........Happy Flashing........
Thanks for the great help. One more question -- How do I turn "quick boot" off?
I have a My Touch 4G currently running 2.3.4 that I want to downgrade to 2.2.1 so I can root it. I am unable to get it to take the PD15IMG.zip to take once I hit the bootloader. It says its extracting fine, but the phone never reboots and if I manual reboot it, it boots up on 2.3.4.
I was using the following instructions.. cyanomod instructions and I did everything fine but get stuck with step 8.
Here is a copy of my ABD session:
Open to any suggestions.. I did some searches but no luck.
I tried to paste the URLs for the pastebin and the instructions I used but was blocked because of the stupid spam rules for newbies.. so PM me and ill send them to you.
Also as you can see I have been a member for over a year now, I just do a lot of lurker so I don't post much. I usually can find my answer searching without asking but I am stumped on this one.
This exact same thing happened to me.
The problem was that ADB wasn't pushing the entire PD15IMG file to the SD card. Every time I tried it it was missing exactly 53 bytes. (You can check this by looking at the file size of the PD15IMG on your hard drive and see if it file size matched EXACTLY on your SD card down to the single byte.)
I fixed it my using the file manager on my computer to just drag and drop the PD15IMG file onto the SD card. For some reason that transferred the entire file without problem.
I ran through the steps again and viola, 2.2.1 upon reboot.
You might also have a corrupted PD15IMG file. You can fix that by re-downloading the file, preferably from a different source just in case.
why u need downgrade 2.2.1 ?
@skipjacks - ill try that, on the 2nd attempt at it yesterday I manually copied of the file over after I downloaded it from another source, yet it still would not upgrade. I will give it a 3rd shot and report back.
@Ridofu - I am tried of having the HTC offical software crashing on me. I would like to root and then install CM7.1
Same thing..
I downloaded PD15IMG.zip manually over the HTC E:\ drive I have mounted.. did all the commands again, went to bootloader, it says it installs but then never reboots or does anything...
the image say loading, and I see a blue bar on the right top corner... then it switches to checking with a yellow/orange bar in the right top corner..
then it just goes back to the main screen and doesn't do anything..
all i see is fastboot, recover, factory reset, simlock, image crc
Id love to run the adb shell md4sum /sdcard/PD15IMG.zip but everytime I run it it comes back with md5sum: not found
Any ideas?
How I rooted my MT4G
Try this guide:
http://androidrootking.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-root-your-mytouch-4g-original_12.html
This is a step-by-step guide to root your MT4G. It has a link to another guide that will help you downgrade your phone.
You must downgrade FIRST, in order to root, because the root tool (gfree) DOES NOT WORK with Android 2.3, it only works with 2.1.
If you really like GingerBread, and want to keep root, go here AFTER you're rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264704
—E!
Do you have MicroSD card reader in/for your PC?
Try to use it instead of copying the file through the phone.
@Ericm301 that is the exact method I have followed and it does not work. I have done the Push method, I have done the copy via USB cable to the E:\ drive that is mounted and neither allow me go to bootloader and load the file.
@Jack_R1 I will try getting a Micro usb adapter and copying the file over as well.
I tried taking the SD card and copying the file manually, I also tried to use the file from a 3rd source. It will not downgrade. I can post a video if you want to see it fail.
Just wanted to give a update. I did the manual downgrade 2 or 3 more times and I finally gave up on it.. then I switched to Fastboot Downgrade method and it worked perfectly the 1st time..
man what a frustration!
Alright so looks like I did something completely stupid and now my phone won't finish the boot process. I was looking at some remappings for the recent key to the menu option and from a post in the development section I found a thread in the International One X development forum that had re-odexed files so that the recent key stayed as the recent key and holding the home button became the menu key. Since they were re-odexed and I had root access I figured I would just manually replace them on my phone with Root Explorer...bad idea. The files were:
System/Framework/android.policy.odex
System/Usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl
After I moved them and reset permissions I rebooted my phone and now it goes through the first couple of boot animations but gets stuck on screen that displays beats audio at the bottom.
I really need to know what to do to fix this. When I plug my phone into my computer it recognizes it as a new \drive, but I don't have access to any of it (still says I need to mount). I also have the android SDk and adb installed if thats of any help. I would really like to not lose any data so hopefully thats possible.
Please help me with this if you have any knowledge of what to do.
Just one little quick update. Even though my computer won't let me access my One X as a drive, when I use command prompt and adb to check for adb devices my One X is listed.
Run the at&t ruu exe file, located in the Dev section.

Alright I'm downloading that now.
In the meantime, how do I get root access with adb/give it permission to overwrite read only files? I pulled the two files that caused this messed and pulled my backups, but when I push them back to the phone it tells me I can't because their read only. I'd rather do it this way since I will be changing only the files that caused the problem.
EDIT: Is the RUU really going to delete all the information on my device? If thats the case I would really appreciate figuring out how to get adb to push my backuped files to the /system directory instead

Yeah, the RUU returns your phone to factory (but doesn't touch your personal files)
EDIT: Also, just pulling this off the top of my head so take it with a grain of salt...
adb devices
adb shell
su
*grant the su request on your device*
adb push <from> <to>

Thanks for your comment. I used the RUU and it kept my personal data so its not a big lose. Had to reinstall a few apps, but for most of them (games at least) my saved data was still there.
I tried a lot using adb and just couldn't get it to work. I don't the phone got far enough through the boot process for root access to be allowed. I was able to run the one click root tool while it was in its stuck boot phase, but it still wouldn't give me permission to modify the /system portion of the phone to be read/write.
All in all though this was a great learning experience. Prior to this happening I knew nothing about adb and now I know commands for pulling, pushing, remounting, shell commands, and other things. I also learned how to fix a softbrick (first one) and what RUU is.
