Gps issues, 3rd times the charm. - Motorola Triumph

I have exchanged my triumph to bestbuy now for the third time and my gps is nally acting normally. It locks on lightning quick compared to 15 min locks before, and i can have wifi on and it doesnt bump me down from 3g to 1x. Just letting people know there are good omes out there.

btw, just found out that my first two phones were 38 software, and this new one which works much better is a 39. take that for what it's worth. I heard these just mean they were manufactured at different places, but maybe thats key.

I've had 2 triumphs now... a 038 and a 039. Both had the same GPS problem... very slow to get a lock. The problem is intermittent though... sometimes it will lock quickly and sometimes it takes 10 minutes.

My Triumph has software version 038; purchased on 7/19 at Best Buy. GPS has always worked fine. In fact, I used it yesterday on a 45 minute trip...worked flawlessly.

GPS Fixed!

So the past few weeks since getting my captivate, I've been a but depressed that my captivates gps couldn't even get a lock, and was ready to just deal with it until today. I've got a doctors appointment way out in lala land, a place I've never been before. So when I got in my car, I felt compelled to give my gps a shot and see if I could somehow miraculously at least get an inaccurate lock like a lot of other people seem to be getting. So since I was already in the maps app getting directions, I flipped on my gps, and in 5 seconds, got a lock! Then within 2 more seconds it had me down to the most accurate pinpoint possible and the damn gps guided me all the way to my destination that's 1 hour 45 minutes away with the best and most accurate pinpoint I've ever seen in a gps, and zero delay for most of the ride here.the biggest delay I experienced was about 1.5 seconds from the time I passed something until my gps showed me passing. Quite impressive, especially on a cloudy day!
Anybody elses gps suddenly working perfectly?

GPS is always hit or miss. yours isn't suddenly "fixed." sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've personally never had a problem except for the very first time I used it. Location matters, signal strength matters, and just location of satellites matter... so many factors, but your GPS wouldn't suddenly "fix itself" without an update of some kind
Well I started off with the stock JM6, and I flashed SRE 1.2.3 I believe, the one that was up just before 1.3, before and after that it didn't work at all, I could never even get a lock.
I know it can't just fix itself, but I also don't know if its possible for samsung and/or att to release an OTA patch, I'm really thinking that's not a possibility, but somehow its working. All my other phones gps always worked really well at all times of the day no mater where I was at, so one could only assume something else is up rather than satellite position.

Mine did pretty much the same thing. A few days ago I couldn't get a lock without standing in the parking lot for ten minutes. I was on the verge of returning the phone. Then out of nowhere, it just started working, every time. Its been a few days now, and I sure hope I don't jinx myself, but it's been performing perfectly in every conceivable situation.
So you are not alone! And my joy in this phone has been restored.
I've actually noticed a difference on the speed of locks the past few days but accuracy is still abysmal. I think the issue is still far to flighty to say its ever really working right.

The first time I ever used my GPS, about a week or two ago, it worked incredibly fast, perfect lock, all the way down to a few feet, the dot was on the same part of the house that I was in. My first impression was, "Wow! I guess I got lucky and got one that actually works!". I was so excited that my GPS actually worked. Never once have I been able to get a lock after that.
My gps its also suddenly working for the past few days. I think it started when I updated google maps, though I can't say for certain it's that.
Anyone else?

Mine is working too... I only noticed after I updated my firmware though..... Maybe that's only a coincidence?
Haha I was going to make this exact thread. GPS has been working great for me. I haven't flashed or done anything other than rooting. It sucked so bad when I first got the phone, but now its pretty much perfect. Used it to drive 1.5hrs ish on i-95.

[Q] Does Nexus S Wifi and GPS have issues?

So there I was, happily reading reviews about Google's/Samsumg Nexus S building my judgement whether to buy it or not after my Nexus 1 got stolen. Happily enough there were very few posts on issues with the phone and most reviews would state quite triumph for Samsumg for it's gorgeous screen and for finally getting rid of it's dreaded GPS bummer.
Decision made and finally got my own brand new NS. In general terms, the phone is pretty smooth, very responsive - haven't seem an android phone this smooth in a while. In general lines I'm pretty happy with it. However, there are two issues which are bugging a lot: the WiFi and the GPS. Since I've read these reviews I mention in the beginning I'm not too sure whether they design flaws or just I got (un)lucky with this one.
My GPS is definitely crap. I have that "GPS test app" and even when it has like 7 satellites in sight it still wont manage to get a lock as quick (if any) as other phones I've been comparing it. E.g. And old HTC Magic sitting next to my NS got a lock in like, 5 seconds while mine took almost 20 - then lost it. Also, after acquiring the lock, it has an average of 20-30 meters error while the HTCs and Nokias are like pin-point 5m<.
As for the WiFi, I'm not sure if is just a display issue or if the reception is really bad, but being in the same room as the router, about 4 meters away, the phone shows two strength bars only. I figure that the reception could be just fine and the display could be just bad parametrized so I've got the "WiFi Analyser" app it says my signal is at -78dBm (which with a little googling apparently means pretty weak).
What do you guys say? Are those known issues? Are there Fixes? Should I send it back?
I just reaaaaly don't want to root it get custom Roms and try and try.. This thing is brand new, should work as it is.
Compared to my HTC Desire the NS GPS takes quite a long time to establish lock - the desire is within a couple of seconds - the NS takes 30-60 seconds.
The NS compass is terrible - there are quite a few posts on this.
All of this on stock 2.3.3 - haven't tried any custom roms or kernels yet.
NS GPS & WiFi are fine. Never had any problems... even on stock.
Nope, don't have problems. When I first got it, it took about 30 seconds to get a lock inside my house (w/ wifi off) from a cold start. Ever since, it took less than 10 seconds.
Wifi also isn't an issue with me. Although the amount of bars it shows is weird, but when I get in my car (signal going through multiple walls), I still get one bar left and works fine (not fast connection, but still get some).
No problems with mine, works just as well as my wife's MT4G

[Q] Does the gps suck for everyone?

Rogers infuse with infused 2.2.3, core B kernel currently. Never been able to get a solid lock... if I get lucky ill get accurate to 20 meters but it jumps around. with my old Acer liquid e I got instant locks and perfect street level tracking... am I the only one?
also, I've tried pretty much every modem, using j4 now. no difference between any of them.
Yup. You're the only one. Return your phone for another one.
My gps locks in about 5-8 seconds and it literally picks the right lot on my street at my house. I've had trouble before.
Are you rooted?
What rom are you on?
And have you tried any of the GPS fixes on this site?
my GPS has breen crap since the beginning.
It was only stock for a day.... maybe.. couldn't get locks with stock
tried rooted with infused, GPS still crap
now I'm on MIUI weekly, tried all the different modems and kernels.... still... SAMSUNG GPS CRAP!!!!
My wife has a captivate and she was running stock for almost a year, and I put MIUI on hers recently and she is now getting better locks.
As long as one of us has a decent working GPS I am happy.
Since owning this and doing research, it seems its a problem with the Samsung GPS... if that is the case... I will probably not be purchasing another Sasmung phone.. I like having a working GPS dammit!!!
My old HTC Aria would lock instantly indoors 99% of the time.. I'm actually starting to miss that tiny little phone... haha
Yes mines crap as well. Luckily I'm exchanging the phone for another infuse since its under warranty. I'll post if there is any difference. I doubt it though, Samsung gps isn't know for their performance. My old x10 xperia is getting lock in 1 - 3 sec indoors and even in the basement. The infuse is an embarrassment compared to the x10. The signal takes 30 secs or more to get a lock and when it does, it jumps around and makes navigation useless.
running perfect for me, I get locks in 2-3 seconds, while inside in my home or warehouse.
I live in SF bay area with my custom in my sig
GPS can suck at times and other times its perfect. I notice it sucks in large cities like when I go downtown or to NYC.

My GPS has been hit or miss, but it's been real fast over the past few days. I'm up in Maine where att service isnt even available 30 miles north of me. Strangely, I have faster locks here than I do when I travel to Mass.

Yes, the stock Infuse's GPS is pathetic.
I'm on Miui and it seems to work very well (after the 1st lock). There are other ROMS where it also works much better.
IMHO, fiddling with all the gps settings and various market apps was too frustrating...they would all work for a day or so but eventually the poor GPS performance returned. So, I quit fiddling, found a rom I like and with a working GPS and stuck with it.
GPS
When I was stock it worked with no issues, and im on serendipty IIV now and I have not had any GPS lock issues.
Alright, miui is giving me the fastest locks, but never perfectly accurate street level... oh well. I guess ill just put up with it.

Not really...I live in Central Jersey and every ROM I tries (dipity, miui, infused, cm7, hellraiser) didn't give me Amy trouble. Maybe I got lucky? Because over the past summer I went all around the East Coast and always uses my phone to find myself around cities Ans I never had a problem.

I've only had a good gps on stock and dlev. No go on infused/miui/sensation. It's a hit or miss rom, even on dlev It'll still lose my location.
MIUI has the best performance for me on the Infuse; the Captivate always sucked and continues to suck (although the tricks on the captivate forum and MIUI do improve it's suckeness).
Tried most of the ROMs for the Infuse (but never stock) and MIUI is by far the best.

I've used a lot of ROMs....
S7: Worked fine, and worked quick. Locked on in ~5 seconds
Stock: Meh. It worked but took forever to lock
Infused: Worked alright. 10 seconds or so to lock
Dlev: Didn't work
CM7: Works good
Live near Minneapolis and never really had that big of an issue with the GPS. It was noticeably slower to find and lock than my HTC Tilt. Just drove down to Kansas City, where I found while in Iowa I lost almost ALL GPS connectivity. Now down here in Kansas I have to be directly outside, takes about 10 minutes to get a lock, and even then is pathetically inaccurate. Been trying in my spare time several of these GPS fixes. The original one I tried, changing to supl.nokia.com actually would see sats quickly, but just never locked.
I really wish I had known just how bad the GPS is on this phone, along with the poor performance in general. I would have avoided this like the plague. Part of the reason we wanted these was for the large screens to use with GPS. Now I learn the GPS is unusable AFTER the return period has ended. Yay. Next phone will be HTC, and honestly maybe Windows one as well.
The problem isn't really with locks for me, its with the accuracy... I can never get better than a 9 metre radius. Quite annoying, especially when my liquid was so accurate...

My Liquid E had Amazing GPS lock. Almost instant. Stock Rogers gave me a lock after a few minutes. CM7 27oct has given me 0 locks in just over a week. :-(
Some tips:
After flashing a ROM or changing gps.conf the GPS occasionally doesn't like to work. Enter angry gps through the dialer (never sgs tools, secgps.conf doesn't update I'd you launch it that way) and toggle the operation mode reboot and toggle it back.
If using Msbased location and the nmea data is old locks can take a long time. This happens if you turn GPS off and use it infrequently.
The google IP based location service (network location).can wreak havoc on the tracking, turn it off! this is especially true in cities where public wifi is everywhere, it will show you're location bouncing from store front to store front. Though it can be helpful on highways with public wifi like i've seen in Pennsylvania and new Jersey on my way to Philly I still prefer actual GPS locks and Samsung phones have a hard time deciding which to use.
Also any smartphone will have threads like this, I have seen mixed experiences in several forums, and my and others personal experience with 2g and 3g IPhones has been negative despite the common opinion that they have good performance. Even my aria was lacking in acceptable gps. Fact is that we are dealing with sensitive components and there will be bad units. What I will say is that the infuse is much more capable than the captivate, my captivate had great reception, better than my infuse, but it didn't seem to like the data running with the GPS, if I used Ms based location it wouldn't track well, and it didn't agree with google maps at all, apps with maps stored on the phone and standalone GPS made tracking impeccable though. The infuse can use Ms based location with few issues and the recent leaks use it by default and I have been more than pleased with the GPS on kj2 without changing any settings at all.
The update when ever it drops may not fix a bad unit so it won't help everyone but I think some people will stop complaining about the spastic moments that Samsung phones can have.

GPS performance question

Hello, I just dug myself out of two Samsung infuse devices, Just miserable GPS performance
How's the GPS on these i727s?
Thanks for your time.

Mine always locks within seconds if I'm in the car. If I'm inside it takes a bit longer but still fast enough.
I had a Captivate and an Infuse... GPS on both was useless. Got my SR in November and GPS is rock solid. I consistently view 20-23 satellites... and lock anywhere from 9-13 sats.... within a few seconds... and accuracy within 9 ft. MyTracks is unbelievably accurate as well on the SKYROCKET.
GPS locks instantly. Probably in a second or less it is already scrolling to my current location.
I do have an issue where it will say "GPS signal lost". I understand when that happens when I'm under a bridge for a while, but I think it is due to overheating. It usually has the signal again within a few seconds.
I would say other than the annoying random GPS signal lost issue, and battery life, skyrocket works better because it locks on instantly, reroutes faster, than my Garmin Nuvi 360 which I've used for the last 6 years and it has taken me everywhere I wanted to go.
In other words, it is a 100% capable first-class navigation device, but make sure you have a charger.
don't foget you can also flash the GPS universal fix also it works great it here on xda
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I have to say WOW. Just got the Skyrocket and can get GPS fix in my basement. No other phone has been able to do this.
Got a fix in six seconds.
My last phone was a Captivate with crappy gps hardware. The only way I could fix the GPS on it was to buy the Skyrocket. Works awesome on this phone.
Drains the battery pretty hard if you're using Navigation on a long drive, but if you have a car charger (or USB port in your car) you can keep it plugged in and everything's fine (battery will actually charge while using it too, so on a long drive you can use gps with car charger and finish the drive with 100% battery).
skrambled,
It was really hard for me to buy the Skyrocket after the wife's Captivate was such a disaster. I read and re-read the reviews and threads here and finally decided to get one. I got a refurb for $20 direct from AT&T and so far I am loving it.
Tried the GPS in the car today and fix time was 2-4 seconds with four trials. I would turn GPS off and leave it off for a while then turn it on and open the GPS status app to check the time to a fix. What ever fixes Samsung implemented for the GPS issue they certainly work.
I wanna comment on one thing. I'm using Google Navigation, which I believe it is up to par with the best of them, if you update text-to-speech. I'm using IVONNA (Kendra) text to speech with Google Navigation.

Weak GPS?

Just used my one x to navigate to work today. GPS seemed really fragile in that if I wasn't holding.the phone directly under my windshield it quickly lost GPS signal. It would re lock after putting it back under the wibdshield.
Anyone else? Comments/tweaks/solutions greatly appreciated.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I saw a few similar comments in other forums as well. I'd suggest you go back and exchange for another one. Any tweaks will only temporary ease the problem for a few days but a permanant solution is to get a phone that just works out of box.
Ugh, was hoping I wouldn't hear this problem pop up. Horrible GPS on my Captivate so was hoping to hear the GPS on the One X was good. Hopefully this is a rare problem...
I've seen it in using the speedtest app - where it will have problems locating a server near me (which there are quite a few) - not sure if this is an app problem or gps problem. I haven't had a chance to use gps much besides that...
I tested out the GPS last night on my way home; it locked extremely quickly and held onto it the whole time. I thought it worked very well.
For what its worth, I'm in Texas.
GPS is amazing on mine. Better than my DHD. I consistently get locks in less than 10 seconds, and most of the time it's less than 5. Maybe it's an AT&T thing, since I'm on Rogers.
Mine locks within 10 seconds in the house, I had a bunch of fc so I reset my phone to factory settings and the GPS and fc are gone. I would try factory rest then use GPS status.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
when it locks onto you, is it right where you are at or just close by? Mine seems to find me quickly, but it is always like just across the street or similar.
The GPS is definitely weaker,
My Skyrocket locks on inside of my house within 10-20 seconds and gives a very accurate reading (pinpoints my room). The One X takes about a minute to lock and it shows me inside my neighbors house..
I'll have to try this out on the road later on, might be an issue for navigation
Used mine today for something on the job. Locked extremely quick and worked fine the entire time.
Mine took under ten second to lock inside my house, but it did show me at my neighbors home. Good enough for me.
Sent from my HTC One X
I used the GPS a bit last night to track a short walk around my neighborhood and found the results to be a bit disappointing. I don't use GPS often, and my last phone was a Captivate, so I"m not sure if maybe I was expecting too much it seemed to have lost the signal at least twice and it plotted me all over the place (road) when it did hold the signal. I had it in my pocket most of the time, so perhaps I was expecting too much for those conditions.
Did you guys enable GPS satellites from location settings? Mine would load locations before I did but only was super accurate when I turned it on.

No, GPS in Captivate is crap. That's well known fact. Everything else should be much better. My Galaxy S2 is very consistent in tracking. I don't expect HOX be any different. You should have 15 to 30 feet accuracy all the time.

Yes.
I tried it out a few times with gps test. I get 10+ satellites within 10 seconds indoors. That's the most satellites I've had on any phone I've owned.
GPS is a little weaker than on my Skyrocket but still good enough to get me around. Just used it today without a problem. If I had never had the skyrocket I would have said that it's "normal" for what I've seen in other phones.
