I owned the desire for about a year, flirted with the sgs for a short while and now i have gone for the dogs b.....ks, ive had the sensation for 3 days!
W.T.F. The battery life is aweful, sense fc's randomly screen doesn't appear to be any better than the desire and scrolling lists is aweful especially in my favourite friend stream and news widgets etc. etc. ...
On my desire i ran RCMixS which had sense 2.1 with sense 3.0 lockscreen and it ran far more smoothly than my new device and when i sold it i first reverted it to stock and it was like lightening!
On my new sensation i ran stock 2.33 and played with this and was most disappointed but luckily, i thought, 2.34 is available so i s-offed, rooted and tried a few 2.34 based modded roms. Not impressed so i went to stock 2.34 which was marginally better but still terrible.
What is going on here, htc's flagship phone and it's streets behind the sgs that i owned (sgs 1 that is!)
I loved the sense ui but why have htc released it this state??
I woke up to the postman on Saturday morning excited (yes at my age!) and now i am one very p...ed off htc customer with another 2 year contract.
Presuming that you have made sure there are no rogue apps preventing your device from sleeping, here's the "solution" to your problem:

Maybe you nedd to do a few things to make your experience with your new phone better. I have had the opposite feelings about this phone that you mentioned. Try running this setup, its awsome on battery life and no lag!
1. Flash InsertCoin 2.3.4 v2.2.2
2. Flash the new EU radio
3. Flash the RIL .0169HMQ
4. Install Spare parts and put window transitions to "fast".
I'm running the same exact setup minus InserCoin because I wanted to run a TMOUS based 2.3.4 rom. Try it...it will help! The phone is fast as hell and stable! hope this helps!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867 flash it in CWM. It will give you Max optimization for the radio. Assuming your on a 2.3.4 rom, grab the last one on the list.
If you're already using a ROM based on 1.45.401.2 and have the latest radio then you have the correct RIL already
You're out of your mind if you think sgs is better. I've used both and this is much faster. Just try the browser on a loaded website.
Gotta love these trolls.
Try ROM+Kernel associations until you find something that "fit" your phone well.
I am running Android Revolution HD with Unity v8 kernel, that's the best for me, but for some Unity v8 is very slow.
For others, InsertCoin is faster than unity whatever the kernel.
Others think Stock kernel is smoother and more reliable than custom kernels
etc
etc
etc
What I mean here is that the Sensation is weird in the way people flashing the same rom, same kernel, using the same clockwork, flashing just the same way, experience very different results! I can have 7606 CF bench points with my rom, some will have 1800 with exactly the same
Really, try again, reboot at least twice after flashing, make your opinion, try anoither kernel, if you don't like, flash another ROM
it's, in my opinion, and for the current situation, impossible to tell what rom or what kernel is the best.
Just one thing is sure for me: Sense is really not optimized, so I always remove it and use Launcher Pro instead (but some where reporting Launcher Pro as slow and other launchers fast, etc, once more it varies a lot!)

Simple, they haven't.
Either 1) you've got a duff phone (most likely) or 2) Vodafone have screwed their Sensations.
Mine on O2 is lovely, but then I've never had a slow phone from O2.
You've changed ROMs and still had issues, which suggests a hardware problem.
Flash it back to stock, take it back to Vodafone and demand a replacement/repair.

I just bought this phone used on ebay (black one with otterbox) looking forward to upgrading from my LG Optimus T (using wind mobile in Canada).
I was just about to ask this question. Any other suggestions? The suggestion above is the phone that caught my eye the most in the developers section...
Any other tips for a new user, must have software, etc...?

i 2nd this rom
ive been using iced glacier since February and im having the dreaded eMMC issues with my phone so this one is going back to Tmo so i figured id reroot it and mess with new roms before it went back
I must say the eVIL D Virtuous Unity rom is absolutely spectacular...clean interface...sense 3.0...gingerbread 2.3.3...its fast with real nice features...highly recommend it
Big fan of Virtuous Fusion (Note: While evil_d knows his way around the Glacier, Virtuous Fusion is not "his" ROM. It was a Virtuous effort, so thanks go out not only to evil_d, but to the entire Virtuous team.). It's fast. Stable. Easy on the battery. And if you flash the latest radio from the Panache (26.09.04.26), I think you'll like the results). O think it's faster and has better cell, Wi-Fi, and GPS connections. Just my own humble 2 cents.
CM7 is legitimately if you don't want Sense. Let's face it. CyanogenMod is legendary for a reason.
Again, that's my 2 cents.
Sorry but we do not allow "best" rom threads, here is why...
There is no "best" rom, everyone has different needs and things they expect from a ROM, its up to you to decide.
Also, these threads nearly always end up in a flamefest when someone says that X is better than Y.
There are several major custom ROM out there for the sensation 4g, which one would you prefer?
Android Revolution HD, Virtuous and Leedroid seem to be the leading group out there, I was an CM loyal with my old G2 so need some advice here.
For now their difference seems to be quite little, but i am not familiar with custom Sense ROM, which team has the biggest upside? Thx.
Sense ROM only folks! I know there are a lot of love for CM, I am a big fan too, but i think sense has done some great job.
I just hope someone will allow sense launcher to resize widget, which will Sense the perfect choice.
None..
Until there is a TMOUS based one released I won't be flashing these WWE roms. T-Mobile Visual Voicemail doesn't work, along with MyAcccount which is good for checking on my minutes and notifying me when I am low. From what I read, the OTA for Sensation 4G is to be released within a week or two and from there hopefully we will get a rom like CMYLXGO's HD2 Desire.
The My Account app works fine of Crystal Pyramid rom
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
I tried all three of them. Leedroid seems to be laggy. Android Revolution HD feels a little faster than the stock ROM and that's about it. Virtuous seems to be faster than the stock ROM too, and I like how they added more options to the quick settings. Like volume control, brightness control, etc... But camera flash doesnt work on Virtuous. Sorry for the negative comments. I'm just not a fan of sense. It feels bloated to me.
Whats with all the ROMs anyways? Why not use something like ADW EX, freeze Sense, and then get setCPU working instead?
I wish someone would have a simple method to perm. root the S-OFF devices and then let us do what we want. Why do we have to flash a ROM just to have perm root AND a glitch free phone?
I perm rooted via the methods in the new guide, but wound up being one of the losers that lost WIFI and had to flash back to my stock ROM.
Now I am back with temp root, ADW EX, and titanium backup. My phone is faster than I care for it to be. (I wouldnt notice any more speed). Id love to be able to turn off my phone and not have to go re-root and redo setcpu each time. Also, Id love to see Adfree work for a change.
Matt
Missing camera flash depends on new OC-kernel and is in all OC-roms

I feel sorry about your case, but your point is totally unrelated to this discussion. I like ADW and other vanilla launcher, but Sense has done a really good job on many different things (well, at the very least if someone could come up with the same flip clock, I will probably be moving back to non-Sense).
I've tried them all. The one by Sergio is the best.
Hey,
I’m currently flashed too Android Revolution HD 1.1.3, but I’m not sure wether to swap to LeeDroiD. Revolution HD is nice, but the built in SOC over clocker really don’t work well, the UI is as smooth as anything but in games and benchmarks the FPS and scores are so much lower in this revision!

Thanks for pointing this out. Restoring to official (nandroid backup). I'm gonna need flash soon.
I tried CoreDroid already. It's the most atractive, realy beautiful, but feels slower than official.
Lee's new update seems to have fixed most of the Lag on mine. Then again, I haven't tried the others...yet.
But the camera flash doesn't seem to be working yet, even on the new updated ROM.

I think you could fix that by flashing a stock Kernel.
I've tested Android HD and Virtuous, seems like Virtuous is a bit smoother and includes many nice tweaks.
I wish any of these sense rom will have the flexiblity like CM
insertCoin
I'm using insert coin at the moment and it seems really smooth and fast. I was looking around to see if there were any EVEN better. This ROM has the same issue with the camera flash which as someone said, is cause by the processor overclocking and is common to all OC kernels atm. Perhaps some of these custom ROMs may have correctly functioning flash with the Stock kernel?
I have tried all the ROMs on the development page and wasn't thrilled with any of them. I ended up going back to Tmos. The reason is that My Acct won't run if you are on Wifi but it can do that on the stock. As one of the previous posters pointed out, visual voicemail doesn't work. I also ran the Quadrant Standard and the performance was sub par. On the stock ROM, I get scores into the 2300s. With the others, I was getting scores between 1400 and 1900. Very pitiful for all the performance promises.
Hopefully within the next couple of weeks the ROMs should improve significantly, unto that point I’m going to switch from Revolution HD to LeeDroid.
Android Revolution HD at the moment. Single core over clock @1.8ghz smooth and fast. Here's my quadrant.
The Revolution HD 1.1.3 works well for now...until my next flash
I've only flash Revolution HD and the latest 1.1.3 update is even better. I won't bother flashing other ROMs until an AOSP one comes out, but this one is plenty fast at the moment. Quadrant scores don't mean anything to me.
is it possibile to just de-odex the stock tmobile us rom and theme a little, also tweak a little. i love the stock rom because everything is working every time i try a custom rom theres always a give or take like the camera flash not working and so on
I just wanted to see everyone's opinion on this. I tried both Android Revolution and LeeDroid when the sensation just got s-off and they gave my phone issues (laggy, locked up, etc.). I went back to stock for a while, but I recently tried InsertCoin per a friend's recommendation and it is the best ROM I have tried on my phone! Animations are super smooth and overall decently fast. Made me think twice about possibly trading it for another T-Mo android phone.
I don't have all the time in the world to try flashing other's ROMs as soon as they are released, but I do want to know how other's ROMs perform compared to InsertCoin. What are people's opinion on some other options that are currently better/on par with IC?
IC is the best I've tried. Currently on Bosina's Senseless and liking it though.
I have lots of lag with all android revolution builds i've tried thus far... Must be TMO phones only.
I've found IC to be the best and smoothest, I just back over to AR HD though because I couldn't watch youtube videos on the latest IC release. Not digging it as much though :/
My choice
i've tested other roms (for no more than 30-40 mins) but i keep going back to bosnia's senseless rom. it runs smooth and fast.
InsertCoin is a beastly rom. Try the new coredroid though. Its pretty smooth and looks absolutely amazing.

Swyped from my HTC Sensation
I just got my Asurion replacement Senny(my previous Senny was stolen on Friday 3/16). I now need to S-Off, SuperCID, root, change recovery, etc all over again. I was thinking about keeping it stock since I thought the T-Mobile ICS update was imminent. If it's not, I might as well install ARHD, InsertCoin, or Virtuous. In lieu of trying to read through the 200+ pages of posts in the developer's sections, can someone quickly outline how far the developers have come with the ICS roms. I installed ICS (InsertCoin) a few months ago, but there were too many bugs. With official ICS Ruu's being released, are the custom ICS Roms stable enough for the Tmobile branded Senny 4G?
Are we at Daily Driver stage?!
P.S.
It seems like the only issue with ICS right now is TMob's Wifi Calling, which I never use.
Now the kernel source has been released we're pretty much there in terms of stability. TMOUS OTA will round things up nicely
every ICS custom ROM ive flashed has been stable. Every ICS ROM thread ive read said it was stable.
Id say they are stable lol
Most ROMs are stable even AOSP but only ROMs based on 3.6 have everything working.

They have been stable for months. Try a few and enjoy
Iv been around since the sensation was released and it has been a long haul to get some stability and performance from these phones, they had the power just didn't have the right pair with software code. The transfer from GB to ICS showed a noticeable increase in performance even from the untouched 3.6 OTA ROM but the performance is not perfect, it is good and a lot better than GB but not perfect (perfectionist here). AOSP ROMS offer higher performance in regards to UI experience but lack in stability and variety, i have managed to find the cm9 rom recently the most stable and fastest rom in UI performance and stability.
This is my list of great rom's for the different ones that there are.
ARHD 6.5.2 (STABLE AND MOFO FAST) (SENSE 3.6)
OPENSENSATION CM9 (STABLE AND FASTEST) (AOSP)
MIUI (STABLE BUT NOT FAST) (SENSELESS NOT AOSP)
MIUI TRIPNRAVER (FAST BUT NOT STABLE) (AOSP)
Yet to find a sense 4.0 stable rom yet.
I have tried many others but these stand out on top of each of the different roms there are.
JUST MY OPINION.
Biggest issues with ICS ROMs for us TMobilie US users are the included TMo apps (My Account/Account manager) and WiFi Calling.
Account manger doesn't work, flat out.
Wi Fi calling will work, but it'll drop calls sometimes a minute or two in.
The latest AHRD with the change that keeps the launcher in memory is really smoking.
Great battery life, super stable and smoking fast...
Just nandroid and try a few....
Thanks for all of the fast responses. There is a reason that I spend so much time on XDA. Awesome Community!!
Rockfoo.
I know there were posts with official ICS ROMs, you can flash one.
As T-mo user I'm a bit hesitant to flush it now, waiting for official OTA.
Of course T-mo is loading ROM with their crap right now and who knows when it will be released. I'll wait for coupe of weeks and if nothing comes out, I will flash the one I saw in EddyOS' post somewhere. It's an original HTC ROM minus T-mo bloatware.
JMO.
I took the dive and S-off'd, rooted, SuperCID'd, installed 4ext, nandroid backup'd, upgraded the firmware, and installed ARHD. It's fast, smooth and so far everything works. Only issue is that I HATE SENSE 3.6. I came from the LG G2X with all of it's AOSP goodness. Problem was the actual hardware was a travesty! My brother-in-law and my girlfriend had HTC phones and I used to think their phones were the ****! And Sense was great until I started downloading and using other developers launchers, messaging apps, etc.
Somehow, Sense 3.0 never really bothered me, but 3.6 completely hides all of ICS's goodness in my opinion. As most of the innovation that HTC developed in Sense is has been incorporated into ICS, Sense 3.6 is largely irrelevant. Sense 3.6 is just in the way!
Since most of the heavy lifting is done, I think that I can now just flash a different ICS rom...right?
I'd like to try ICS as it was intended.
Yes they are cause we have final ota base and also the kernel source... They're perfect

I've been running custom ICS roms for a long time, and i will say that they are now completely stable, no FC's or stuff that does not work
People are always posting up new threads asking for advice on this ROM vs. that ROM. Well, I haven't tried them all, but I've tried quite a few of the more popular ones recently. I'm not going to pick these ROMS apart. If you want more info about what I liked or didn't like about a particular ROM I've tried, go ahead and ask.
I got my Sensation back in January. I used the stock Gingerbread for a couple of months. Then got frustrated when the T-Mobile ICS update got delayed and have been on a flashing frenzy ever since.
I've been trying a lot of ROMs lately. I started with ARHD, then went to Elegancia, then Hypernonsense, then back to Elegancia, then Sense 4 Elegancia, then back to 3.6, then Virtuous Inquisition, then Opensensation (CM9), and back to Elegancia again. I've also tried Sebastion, faux, and bricked kernels - I prefer bricked best.
I honestly don't a see a performance difference between Sense, stripped Sense, or AOSP ROMs. I have System Tuner Pro and always monitor memory usage. I thought that the stripped and AOSP ROMs would have gobs of free memory available, but they just don't. They're no better or worse. I also was compelled to try those ROMs to improve battery life. Again, the experience didn't match the hype.
It all comes down to personal preference. Each ROM has its own glitches. But from my experience, full Sense 3.6 ROMs are the most functional and most stable. I loved the Sense 4.0 ROM I tried, except that Sense crashed on me like 3 times a day having to pull the battery each time. For me, nothing beats the Sense widgets. I live in the email and calendar widgets for work and the music widget in the car. No other widgets come close.
I think I'm gonna quit screwing around with it for a while. I am very happy with the Elegancia Sense 3.6 ROM / Bricked kernal combo. It's pretty much already modded/themed the I way I would do it. I can just flash it and go. I will try the Sense 4.0 version again when it's more mature. I loved it, I just can't have my phone crashing on me constantly.
I still want to try MIUI and will probably try CM9 again when it's official. I really like some of the home screen setups people have been able to pull off with their AOSP ROMs. But I think the widgets will always pull me back to a full Sense ROM. The only widgets that can compete, you have to pay for - and they're still not as good. Also, the AOSP camera blows compared to the Sense camera. In the end, it's all about what's functional for you.
In conclusion, try a few, try a bunch... don't get lost in the hunt for better battery life and more performance, because - 1) those 2 things don't go together... & 2) those 2 things are largely the same across all ROMS whether you're full Sense, stripped-Sense, or AOSP. Just find what you like and enjoy!
SO wutZ da best roms to use?
Just joking, but it's too bad some people are serious.
Its all about your liking that's it otherwise there is not a rom whit better battery life than any others

I've been using Ordroid (Sense4) for a week or so now and I've found it quiet stable to be honest. I haven't experienced any crashes.
The batterylife was in 5.0.X about 17 hours (2 hours of screen turned on).
V6.0.0; I can't say if there are anything wrong just yet since its been out for about 2 days only and I've used it for 1 day. but the first batterycycle was about 21 hours with 2h 5m screen turned on. Only thing I could complain about with Ordroid is the partially working BT, I can't say anything about the Wifi-tethering issue because I am not using it.
Hmm, well I guess that was that.
The partially working Bluetooth issue is across all Sense 4 ROMs. It has to do with the fact that Sense 4 was ported from another device with different BT hardware - so the Sense drivers aren't fully compatible.
With the release of T-Mobile's official RUU, it may be time try Sense 4 again and see if some of the previous issues I experienced are fixed now. But BT will probably always only be partially working due to the driver issue.

I get that they are all (Sense or no Sense) pretty much the same when it comes to performance and battery, but how do they compare to the stock one? Will I get any benefits from switching from the stock ICS to one of these?
Thanks!

I tried Elegancia Sense 4 again last night. I thought it was time to give it another go since there have a few builds released since the last time. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. Whatever issues I'm having are buried deeper than what gets changed from build to build.
My phone has crashed on my twice in the last 5 hours. It's unfortunate. I really like Sense 4 - I think it's cleaner & smoother than 3.6. The camera is better and faster than 3.6. But if your phone crashes on you while changing menus or doesn't wake up and you have to pull the battery all the time, then it's useless.
Does anyone else have these issues with Sense 4? Maybe another Sense 4 ROM is better? I have not yet tried another Sense 4 ROM because it seems they all use the same base. Maybe I should try another and see if it works better...
The new InsertCoin ROM Sense 4.0 is out now, looks very stable, only FM Radio not working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546731
I just flashed OrDroid Sense 4. I'll give that one a shot. It has a different base - the new leaked Ville RUU instead of the One S. The Ville and Sensation share the same processor, so maybe that will do the trick.
EDIT: That one's no good for me either. It has its own set of glitches I'm not willing to live with.
Now trying Steve's new TMOUS Elegancia with Bricked kernel.
Any tradeoffs for non Sense ROMs? I know the camera app is better on HTC's but other than that? Is there a Torch app similar to the stock one? Etc..
...and back on Elegancia 3.7.6. lol
I am running the updated TMOUS firmware now, tho. along with the other radio fix for TMOUS users. This might be the best combo I've run yet. But I'm still anxious for a fully functional Sense 4 ROM.

There is another Torch app that is pretty much the same. The ROMs I've tried all have it included if they don't have the HTC app.

Just flash the new one on top. No super wipe required all your data and apps are safe

I'd love to know whether any of these custom ICS ROMs is better than the stock ICS ROM. I get that they are all (Sense or no Sense) pretty much the same when it comes to performance and battery, but how do they compare to the stock one? Will I get any benefits from switching from the stock ICS to one of these?
Thanks!

For me, I love the overclocking of custom roms/kernels. Stock Sensation is 1.2ghz. My custom rom Sensation is 1.7ghz. Man is it speedy. I took the time to read countless posts and spent a ton of time learning how to mod my Sensation. No way am I going back to stock carrier rom.
