I've been doing a lot of testing with different sim cards the last few days, and thought I'd share my results. I have identified with 100% certainty the reason why some people on miui can't get wifi calling working, while others can. It is 100% caused by the sim card. If you have the older style sim card, with the black numbering on the front, it will work every time. Newer style it doesn't, or maybe once per 50 reboots. (That one has gold lettering on the front.)
Another thing I've discovered, (which ironically I wasn't testing for ), is this also seems to be the cause of the "apn issue" that people have on cm7. Same deal, older style sim cards don't seem to have it at all. Newer ones do. I have access to 3 different sim cards from tmobile, all activiated on different numbers. I have two of the newer style ones, and one older. Each test was done with 30 reboots each. (I was going cross-eyed by the end of it.)
1st card, new style, one I got with the phone.
- Miui - No wifi calling at all
- cm7 - Apn issue 4 out of 30 reboots
2nd card, also new style, from a different phone.
- Miui - Again, no wifi calling working on any boot
- cm7 - Apn issue 6 out of 30 reboots
3rd card, old style sim card (and although they say new ones increase the 4g speed, after multiple tests I didn't see one difference between any of them speed wise)
- Miui - Wifi calling working perfectly on every boot
- cm7 - not one apn issue out of 30 boots.
So, while this is a small sample size, (I don't have more sim cards, and I really couldn't do more than 90 reboots without loosing my mind), it seems to show the cause of the problem.
There really isn't much I can see them being able to fix this. I'm guessing the miui devs and cm7 devs are using testers that have the old style sim card, or have the old style themselves (depending on if they have the phone or not.) Now since you can't really troubleshoot an issue you can't re-create, this might be something we all have to live with.
I just figured I'd post this so people who had these issues know now they're not insane, and they're not doing anything wrong, it's a compatibility issue.
If anyone else does find something different than what my tests show, please either respond or send me a pm. I'd be very interested to see others results as well. (Like I said, correlation is not causation, so this could very well be a fluke test with such a small sample size.)
Good job on the test. Unfortunately I have a sim card with black writing, and I still have the APN issues with CM7, as well as the occasional wifi calling issue.
Damn. Well it is sim card related, but perhaps there are a few more types that I wasn't able to test with. Did you get your sim-card with the phone? Or did you have an older phone and used the same simcard in the newer one? (The old one I'm using is at least 4 years old, if that helps.)
how can i help
Thanks for the info. I bet that drove you up a wall. I have 1 maybe 2 of the old "3g" Sims. And 2 newer ones from TMobile Replacing the "3g" ones. And I have 4 brand new ones that came with both of my devices. I kept them when I returned the phone. Let me see what I can do to help. I run cm7 and modified versions of the stock rom. I have big time issues and want to help resolve this.
I agree with the comments about developers....but remember this not there day jobs and they do depend on us to submit info...but then with all of the talk about apn's you would think at least one would have fought on. I have a copy of xboarders Apn fix....never really looked at it. I just keep using apnsbu from the market. I will report back with findings. Thinks for. The post and something to do...
Oh that statement wasn't in any way meant to be a shot at any of the devs, I'm just stating that you can't blame them not being able to look at a problem they are unable to re-create. Infact, it was just the opposite. It was more like saying it's not their fault in the least.
And please let me know your results. (Yes, it was driving me nuts. I've been going through logs, the init.rc, all the added init scripts, everywhere trying to figure out why it wasn't working. This was a last ditch effort, figuring it couldn't possibly be this but there was nothing else to try. Go figure )
This is turning out to be very tedious. My old sim from my tmo shadow/Juno days is a bit unreadable. The number has been tuned and is in readable. But no worries the bb still works and disabled to read the serial number....now on hold with TMobile. I am starting to think I really called at&t. Any how what I would like to knowis how can we identify what card is what. I see some noticeable differences like the old one has a big ger gold contact area, the numbers where in black, and the design on the old one on the contact side is gray. There is. Nothing legible on it. But I do know it is one of the old ones. Is came with a 3g phone from like 3 years ago. I am supplying this info to possibly help identify what Sims work. I will post pics later if needed.....still waiting. Off topic but all three hold songs suck. If they want to keep people happy then they should get some new "caller tunes" will report back more later....25 minutes on hold now.......

I believe my sim card is around 3 years old, but I'm trying to think whether I might have gotten a new one during one of my phone upgrades. Not really sure...
Ok I can not further test this today. Turns out that they have to release the old similar card.?.?. What ever that means. Did some questioning. This is what I got. My old card is a 2g. The new cards are 3g. 3g card is needed for 4g. How to tell a 3g from 2g is a marking on the contact side of the card. 3G cards say "TM9073"
So if people could help with trend analys that would help a lot. Info need is...
1) do you have apn issues.
2) what, if any, markings do you have on the contact side of your sim.
3) what rom and version are you using.
4) kernel info.
5) baseband.
This could be helpfully to us and any developer that is willing to help figure this out.
Edit: I have not tried the miui roms. I will help as much as I can with miui, but I think this is the same issue with different Results. So I am adding in the rom question.
Edit 2) wifi calling will come up invalid sim when apn is lost on cm7
1) do you have apn issues.
Yes
2) what, if any, markings do you have on the contact side of your sim.
No markings on the contact side of the sim
3) what rom and version are you using.
CM7 Nightly 114
4) kernel info.
CM
5) baseband.
July version
1) yes
2) TM9073
3) cm7 nightly 113 8/20/2011

BY THE WAY NEW R34 128k sims are now available.
im currently running this sim and i have no issues whatsoever!
Do you know of any way on how to id this sim? From others?
If you have an old T-Mobile sim you should be able to call them and tell them you wish to change your number and service to the old sim card. You give them the number on the old sim (if you can read it) and tell them you want to do a sim swap. I have done this before on a prepaid account. I don't see how a sim could increase your data connection speed. The new sims just have larger phone books and can accept longer names, etc.
I called yesterday. They released the sim. What ever that does. So some time today I need to call back and set it up. I have many sims on hand to try but this is the oldest one. I am not worried about how many numbers I can store on. I just want to help try and find a solution to the apn issues using custom roms. Any information posted here in regards to apn or sim cards is usefull. I see people reading this so please chime in. Even the smallest bit of info could help.

TM9073
3) what rom and version are you using.

Ok could not go back to old 2g sim. Rep gave me many reasons as to why it would not work after submitting it 3 time. The 3g sim I was using was new in early may replacing 2g sim. Insted of reverting back to current 3g sim I decided to use the sim that came with my g2x. I noticed that the contact area on the new 3g sim was slightly different then the old 3g from may. Both. Sims had that "T" code on the contact side. I guess it is time to test. Report more tomorrow.

Update: new 3g sim card a waste of time. Did a reboot and no data. I wish I knew where to look. Cm7 and miui seem to be a waste of time. I need wifi calling at home. Does any one have any ideas? Are their any developers willing to help? Is there some where or some one we can report this to?

Ive found the same thing as OP. WIFI started acting up when I finally switched to using the sim that can't with the phone. Never had any issues with the old one. When I pop the old sim back in wifi is perfect. I'm kicking myself now because I cant reregister my old sim because all the numbers are rubbed off.
FYI: try inserting sim in other device's. Depending on the device you can go into setting and read the sim card number. I used a @#$%berry 8220 Pearl flip. I wish you luck. I just tried to revert back to my old sim. They could not push it because it was inactive to long. Something like 30 days. Keep us posted.

Boy I'm gonna get hammered bad if my search failed to find an existing thread on this one (and yes I will moderate this thread if someone can point me to a relevant thread)...
Just exchanged my first Fuze at 27 days of use because I was experienceing the following issues:
1. Often times when changing bands (i.e. from G/E to 3G or back) it would completely drop the connection.
2. While on a call it wouldn't switch bands.
3. At least once every 36 - 48 hrs it would randomly soft reset.
4. It would lose the Data Connection and not be able to reconnect until I soft reset.
I tried several Radio Roms (Raphael 1.01.25.16, 1.02.25.28, 1..02.25.32 & Experia 1.06.25.29 & Blackstone 1.09.25.14) with the same results.
I used my own Cooked Rom, At&t Stock 1.95.502.5, & Da_G 1.9 w/MSVC again with the same results.
I've also run with & without HardSPL and both Security Locked & Security Unlocked all seems to have no effect on this issue.
So as I said I just exchanged it today. Now on the way back to my office the replacement did a random soft reset!
Has anyone else seen or experienced this issue?
I'm going to go out on a limb here. Have you replaced your SIM card since this issue has started.
Actually I didn't think to do that as my SIM was replaced just a few months ago when I acquired my last (4th) Tilt.
I'll stop at At&t Corp Store on the way home and get a new SIM....

Actually there is a new sim card, with better band selection. The new sim card was released for the multiband switching issue known with PDA's. Your issue sounds like many I have seen in the field. Especially with the Fuze. This stand most true for people in the 3g/edge border that consistently switching back and forth.
Here is a pic of the sim, make sure they give you this one. not the old blue and white one.
Well, the local store didn't have the orange SIMs but they did have one newer than the one I was already using.
Don't know what the numbers mean but I noticed your pic has 71247D, 2024 just to the side of the SIM and mine has 71234G, 3022 there.
I'll just give it a few days and see if things are better. If now then I'll call customer service and insist they ship me an orange SIM.

The 71234G 3022 one is the same one they shipped me when I got my Fuze (like 2 days after it came out).
I haven't even activated that one, instead I just stuck in my old Cingular branded SIM and it seems to be working alright.
I'll get dropped calls and stuff, but I don't think its related to the SIM.
I contacted AT&T when I got my Fuze and they said there's no real reason for me to swap SIMs and I could just keep that one as a backup, so that's what I've done.

You should be ok with the one you have, now if you need the newer orange one and they want to charge you p.m. me and ill ship you one no charge. just let me know if the sim fixed the issue. Effectively you still the old sim.
71234 is the SKU for the old sim card.
71247 is the SKU for the new one.

Does the cingular sim say 3G on it. If not use the AT&T sim.
There have been NUMEROUS network upgrades since the days of the cingular sim, and those sim's are not provisioned for the updates. So if you are getting numerous amounts of dropped calls then you need a new sim card

Same with me. Everynow and then the only way to get online is by a soft-reset. I notice it after I've left my phone idle for a while. I got my Fuze in November it came with a blue and white SIM with an orange 3g logo and ATT written in white.

Man, I really would have thought a sim swap would have fixed the issue. I can see one bad fuze, but two in a row doing the exact same thing. Thats a serious issue. Im really hoping that the new orange one fixes the issue. I, from a technical aspect can understand why this is happening and that is what this new SIM is supposed to correct. Lets hope!!

Going to get my orange SIM in about 30 minutes. I'll test and report back.
I just picked up a new SIM card (71247D) to replace my old Cingular 3g 8525 card, and as I was driving back from the AT&T store, my phone dropped a call 3 times! Do I have to wait a period of time before AT&T's network or the phone provisions itself for the card & services? If not, then the new card seems to be no better than my old one.
In addition, my 8525 dropped plenty of calls, while an old Blackberry, like the 8700g was flawless in phone quality in the same areas. I am in Phoenix in 1900 PCS.

It can take up to an hour for all the data provisioning to be burnt to the sim. Usually right out the store just the phone side is active.

OK, had my new sim card for a little over an hour. No dropped calls so far. I also don't know hwo or why but I have 2 more bars of 3G now. Before I never got above 2 bars of 3G. Now I have 3 bars minimum but mostly 4 bars. It's a little too early to find out about the random resets, but so far so good. Thanks for the heads up. Fingers crossed.
Okay guys I need help with this captivate.
I got this captivate and have installed almost every single rom from this website at least twice and I am still not able to make or receive calls. The wifi works perfect no matter what rom I use. Everything else works perfect even the GPS.
I have tried (4) different activate sim cards in this but I am still not able to get or receive calls. I have tried every single trick I can find for setting the APN settings as well. The sims I tried are from active carriers like; t-mobile,AT&T,Boost as well as TracFone, even tried an active Pre-paid sim.
The phone is completely rooted and unlocked. I also verified this with the codes used to check.
My question is: Is there any other way I can check the radio on this to see if maybe it is bad other then to keep trying different sim cards?
ATTN MODERATORS: PLEASE MOVE THIS TO THE CORRECT THREAD IF IT IS NOT POSTED IN THE CORRECT ONE. Thanks!
Did it work on stock. If not, take it back.
I wish I could take it back however it is no longer under warranty. About a week ago I tried my personal sim card in it from At&t and was able to get a signal. Now I am not able to get a signal no matter what sim card I use.
After all this I thought well maybe the phone had a bad esn however I would not think that would be case after trying different cards all from different networks and carriers. I do not know how to check the esn or imei anyway.
The phone has a one year warranty, every captivate is still under warranty. Find where a device support center is go in tell them you can't make calls ams they'll give you a new (refurbed) phone. Make sure you are completely stock though.

IMEI is on a white sticker behind the battery. There's no way its out of warranty yet, unless that little white sticker above the battery is red. If it's out of warranty due to being rooted/unlocked, use odin to restore before taking it to the store/drop shipping it back.
I've personally experienced the differences with SIM cards.
Having been with T-Mobile (since Voicestream) I've gone through tons of SIM cards throughout the years. For the heck of it every time I got a new phone I just swapped to the new SIM.*
Ok so let's talk present day. I've noticed that the SIM cards have been changing. The large gold surface area is now small etc...
* Recently (past few years) before all the smart phones started to pop up like crazy, I was using the same SIM card with several devices. I remember getting crappy data speeds at one point then I swapped out to a newer SIM and it was night and day.
Now it looks like the newest SIM's are marked with an, "activate by," date. I wonder if there are limits to how many times that SIM can connect to the network?
Anyhow, anyone with advanced knowledge about SIM's, your input would be greatly appreciated. I find it a pretty interesting topic due to my personal experience. There has to be something with the changes that do effect the data speeds for example.
Below are some pics...

I just switched sim cards one day ago. I switched to the one that came with the phone. I notice no difference at all. The old one had been in my vibrant for about 7 months. T mobile rep told me that the only difference in sims(size of gold area) is how many contacts they will hold. I do not believe that for a minute. I just sold my Nexus One and it would not recognize the sims with the smaller gold contact area. I have been told so much BS from CS and tech reps at tmobile that I rarely believe any thing they say at this point. I am getting a replacement phone which should arrive on Monday. I just hope that it is free of most of the issues that my present one has or what I have seen listed in these threads. I really really like this phone just hope either it is issue free or the issues are addressed by LG right away if not I will send back and cancel the order. This phone has potential to be THE Beast of the the Bunch!!!!
I just got a new sim card with smaller gold area for my N1 and it works fine.

Side note, anybody know how to activate it to your account without having to go through the completely clueless IVR? Perhaps through their website?

Closest I know of is doing a chat session with a rep through their web site. I have only swapped SIMs once when I switched to the Nexus One and had the 3G connection issues (didn't have them with the G1). Went smooth and had no problems.
I work at a retail store and the newest SIMs have a matte white finish to them and have the numbers "5.0.0.1" on the bottom. I don't know if it gets you faster speeds , but generally these ones fix most customers connection problems.

I'm having super nasty reboot issues, but I also have the SIM from my T-Mobile Wing still so I'm going to go swap it tomorrow and see if it at least helps.
I just chatted with T-Mobile customer rep online and she swap for me in 5 mins. Painless process.
Been curious lately myself. To Tmobiles reps surprise when I told them. (After they said I wouldnt have 3g or 4g) I told them I am still using my simcard from 2003.. from my Nokia 3650! I use it in my G1, I have used it in my HD2 with Android and Better windows rom for HSPA (4g) just fine..
Reps didnt really believe I am using that old of a sim card. I am however. Data speed seems fine to me. Wouldnt mind being proven wrong if a new sim style has faster speed.
I will believe the new sim cards have larger space for contacts tho.
The main reason I think there are new sim cards and they are being pushed, is due to sim cloning. Older sim cards could be cloned so you could put multiple numbers on 1 sim, or just clone it to prevent swapping. Newer sim cards however, cant really be cloned. So if you want my thoughts, its not about the data, its about the security.
That's a good observations.

As far as how GSM works i know the carriers network information is on the sim card not the phone. Hence why you can swap GSM carriers on your phone at any time. The sim card carries the prl which instructs the phone what towers to use. So getting a new sim card once or twice a year would seem like a good idea.
This is my guessamation lol

Older SIM cards, unlike the newer ones, have an activation limit (usually ~90,000 or so). Once this limit is reached, the SIM card will not connect to the network anymore. The 'activation' event occurs each time your modem connects to a new cell radio on the towers. This wasn't a large issue with GSM/EDGE because they had a larger cell radius and your phone would use data less. With HSPA(+), your phone can make hundreds of connections in a day, sometimes thousands.

Never seen or heard this one before. I mean using it since 2003 to now. I would be sure over my time and travel I wouldve connected that much and more.
First off - there is supposedly a problem for Wifi calling and the G2X and the TM9177 sim card,
many seem to find that switching to an older TM9073 (or TM9035) SIM card fixes the wifi calling problem.
see: http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/10103?tstart=0
see: http://support.t-mobile.com/message/68263
I had the older TM9073 which worked great for 2g/3g/HSPA+/wifi calling- but it died on me while traveling for work, and I was fortunately able to stop by a T-mobile store, and they gave me a new SIM --- the TM9177 --- which works fine for 2g/3g/HSPA+... but wifi calling is a mixed bag, it works on some ROMS, but not otthers.. whereas before the TM9073 works for all ROMs.

Is anyone else having issues with their Wifi-Calling on T-mobile?
I find that the wifi-calling app gets stuck at the stage there the app reads: "Enabling..."
* This is on either stock unrooted GB ROM or Xboarder's tweaked GB.
* Happening on two different routers in two different homes, different ISPs. Both
were working previously.
* I noticed this recently upon returned home from a long trip. During the trip, I had good cell coverage and didn't need the wifi-calling function anyway.
* T-mobile CSR reports an outage:
_Irina M: Ok, we are experiencing an issue with the G2X not able to establish a WIFI connection.
_Irina M: I will post the outage for you.
_Irina M: EFFECTIVE DATE: 11/7/11 OUTAGE TYPE: UMA...................................
MARKET AFFECTED: All
...................................
CUSTOMER IMPACT: G2X Cannot Activate Wifi Calling
T-Mobile subscribers may be reporting issues with the G2X encountering errors when attempting to activate Wifi calling. The device may show "enabling" but never connects.
Please Note: This issue is pending a software update but until this is released customers can upgrade to an UICC SIM card to resolve this issue.
MARKET/SERVICE IMPACTS TO: Global / Wifi Calling
CAUSE: n/a
* Despite this answer from t-mobile, I think it might be related to my recent change of a SIM card. I was having another unrelated issue and CS suggested I get a new SIM. The new SIM did not solve my issue. But now I have a new one. I did get a new SIM today, but this did not solve my problem. For the life of me, I cannot find my old SIM to reactivate.
Any one having the same issue? Can anyone test their phones to see what is what? Thanks.
11/18/11... I tested using a sim card from an Sgs4g with working 4g and wifi-calling. With this SIM in my g2x, wifi-calling was working again. It appears to me that my newer SIM cards x 2 break wifi calling.
If only I had my old card. Ironic that there was nothing wrong with that card in the first place.
I don't use wifi calling but my wifi does cut out and stop working randomly. Right now I'm only showing one bar even though I'm Lees than 10 ft from my router. This phone seems to have random wifi issues and I remember reading something online conforming it, but I don't remember where.
Sent from my G2X
I have that problem (stuck at "enabling") a couple of times a month. I generally take that as an indication that it's time for a reboot, and so far a reboot has always fixed the problem for me.
No I'm experiencing it too. It was working last night I know (at home) and it was working this morning.
My GF just called me at work, which was odd... and this makes sense. My WiFi Calling is stuck at "Enabling" also.
Tmobile has gotten rid of WiFi Calling on the newer phones because they are moving to a "new" standard. The new standard requires a new SIM card. WiFi Tethering is also not working out of the box.
Something is strange.
I even went into Apps and did a Force Stop and cleared cache and tried to launch it again... it just closes and never enables.
*UPDATE*
Now its working.
I never have connection problems, but the sound quality is terrible. The person on the other end sounds real robotic and choppy. It was like this even on my blackberry.
Now its saying invalid SIM. Sweet.

I have never used it but decided to test it because of this thread. Works great on weapon 3.0.
I bought an old sim card off eBay but haven't activated. May try it out. I'm on CM7 and it hasn't worked in days.

I am using an old similar card, wifi calling working fine, but I can't use Bluetooth.
Nightly 199, faux cm kernel.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi calling should not be affected by your SIM card in any way on the G2x.
You need a gsa sim. These sim cards are made in the usa. Yea America!!!! **** yeah.
No but on some real talk the sim cards made in America are good quality.
India, China, and Mexico made ones do not support wifi calling. Plus they go out every month

I swapped my wife's sim card (about one year old) with my newer one. I asked customer care to reprogram our phone numbers. Either card supports wifi calling in the Galaxy S 4g. The old card supports wifi calling in my g2x.
When I get to an area of known good coverage, I will run a speedtest to see if I lose any speed using the older card.

Where and how to find old simcard?
I called Tmobile service yesterday. 3 different rep told me that I need newer sim which support 4G and wifi calling and offered to upgrade the new sim card for 20 bucks. I got mad and asked to talk with mananger. Finally a tech rep honestly told me that there is issue with wifi calling for G2X and their engineers are working on the fix, but no date of completion yet.
She sent me to a tmobile store to get a new sim card, and said it might solve the problem, but not sure 100%.
I went to the store, change new sim card at no charge. but the wifi calling still not working.
now, I saw people put the comment in this forum that we need old sim card. How do I indenfify the old sim card? what number? or serial number ect???
Can I get it from ebay?
Thanks
Alpharetta.

OK.. I resolved the problem. I had TM9073 and it did not work with MUI ROM.. so I changed to newer sim card TM9102, and it still not work for wifi calling. I then read about the issue with MUI ROM. the wifi calling only work with CM7 ROM. So I reflash G2x with CM7, and still use TM9102 sim..
It takes 5 minutes to enable the wifi calling feature.. but it works now... so first thing first.. you need to make sure you have the correct ROM... and then sim.
Wifi calling on MIUI has only worked for me 3 times. That was on the first boot. I had the newer sim card. Just recently bought a older sim card and now wifi calling works for MIUI every time!!

It is the TM9073 Sim that is working properly on all other roms. The TM9102 is the Sim having problems with WiFi.
Yeah just another update thread. Who here is still getting the no sim error after installing the update it is now worse for me! I am more of a reader and not a poster im just curious is there a work around for this like for example has anyone installed a rom and the problem went away?
LIttle Rant: I have had nothing but motorola smartphones Droid X, Droid Bionic, Razr Maxx so I got curious since the S3 is one of the top selling phones to check it out and let me tell you love the phone but getting that stupid error all the time is annoying I picked my s3 up thinking I could make a quick sell on my razr maxx but now im stuck switching back and forth between the S3 and the razr maxx Verizon even sent me a replacement did that help? nope now its been 3 days they have a ticket open so who knows any help would be apprectiated and lets hear your story!
I'm still getting it, even worse than before I installed the new modem (radio). It seems to be more prevalent in areas where it's switching from 4g to 3g and back. If I'm in an area that has a strong 3g or 4g signal, it never gives me that problem. Has to be a Verizon thing or something with the SG3 that can't handle the switching between the two modes, just not sure......

UPDATE: I can confirm that if I place myself in a particular position in town where my phone will constantly switch between 3g and 4g and I attempt to send SMS messages my phone inevitably drops all data signal and gives me the no sim and no connectivity message.
I haven't been to were I used to get them bad....but I got one in an area yesterday where I generally get a strong 4G single that I had never had the no SIM issue before.
I was not happy.

I am getting it all the time at my house sometimes to the point where the phone does not work at all but if I drive down the road phone works flawless no errors even at work no errors im starting to think it might not be the phone it could be there network but for the hell of it lastnight I switched back from my razr maxx at home and the phone worked fine and when I woke up phone was fine im wondering if this only happens when the network is more at peak operation im growing very frustrated with this phone might off it and just use the razr maxx or hope for another update.

I had the same situation just moving from one room to another in my house. Yesterday evening I received a text from my neighbor asking if I had noticed we were receiving a 4g signal in our area (we are in a rural area about 12 miles outside of Tallahassee, FL.). Since yesterday I have a solid 4g in my home area so the no sim problem has disappeared. But there are pockets of weak coverage areas on the way to work in town and at the Florida State University where I work and I continue to find small areas where the problem persists. It has to be the SG3's inability to handle the hand-offs between 3g/4g which produce the no sim problem. My Thunderbolt would handle the switching from 3g/4g much better and not produce the no sim error. I'm sure Samsung could remedy this with a software change (at least not display the no sim) when switching service.
I still have the error on 2 phones. Funny thing is it seems that now it is worse on my wifes phone where it was the other way prior to the update.
From reading this thread and similar threads/topics regarding the sim errors with the GS3, I figured I'd post this here. This is confirmed, my friend and I both have a GS3 bought on the same day at the same VZW store. She keeps getting a sim error while I have never gotten one regardless of coverage or 3G/4G switch frequency, I frequently switch from 4G to 3G when on the subway. She went into the store and requested a new sim card, wound up arguing with the rep, according to him there's no possible way the error could be related, she finally got a new card by calling reps at various levels. After doing a factory reset and reprovisioning the internal SD card with the new sim, she has not yet had a sim error with the newest OTA. So it seems many Verizon sim cards aren't necessarily defective, but are improperly configured with the VZW network. This is just an educated guess based off personal experience, hopefully this is helpful to those with frequent sim errors.

How do you reprovision the internal SD card with the sim? If you are correct, some people may be able to fix the problem by doing so with their existing sim cards.

I would also LOVE to know how to do this!!! Very frustrated with this!! Hopefully reprovisioning the sim finally works!!
After searching around, I found to reprovision, you need to go to stock and dial this in the dialar, *2767*3855#. My question is,
- Is it def not possible to do this from an AOSP rom?
- When they say "go to stock", can I just flash a TW based rom and do it?

Agreed, I have reprovisioned before, to no avail. I thought it might be my SMS client, GO SMS, but I am getting the same NO SIM error with that client that I get with Handcent as well as the stock messaging client.
I called Verizon back today, to note my account that it's still happening, and spoke to them about a replacement phone. (I am already on my second S3 and second SIM) They offered me my choice of Android device, which currently is a bad deal. So I asked them if their deal would hold true once the Note 2 came out, and the nice lady at level 2 support said yes.
So unless this gets fixed prior to the Note 2... a switch is almost inevitable for me.
Dont waste your time doing the reprovision does not work I tried it earlier today.

Interesting...I might be doing the same thing. This issue is beyond frustrating. However, I have not called Verizon about it yet. Mainly because there doesnt seem to be a fix. I dont want a refurb S3 and there currently isnt a valid replacement. Might try the Note 2 if its possible.

100% agree with Ripken... call them and have them note it in your account. Basically, I am documenting it once per day (it happens more, but calling more than once per day seems redundant) so they see it, but more importantly, I have some ammunition if I finally move to a new phone. Today's call to 2nd level tech support was a bit frustrating to me, as the nice lady said that, in fact, verizon did get a bad batch of SIM cards. When I pointed out that the bad batch must have been sent all over the country, because it's not a localized issue, and there was a software update addressing it... she didn't have a response. We went thru the same rigamarole with the phone... ie pull the battery, read the number on my SIM, read the numbers from my software build, etc. Again, she offered me any Android phone in exchange, which I turned down. But, at the end, she mentioned she was sending this issue up to a different tier of support that (her words) works with Samsung to fix these issues. I kindly asked her to have them address the headphone jack - bluetooth non-coexisistance, which she giggled at but assured me was working as intended.
So, back to waiting for a fix... or an inevitable new phone.
VRLHD Modem
Ok guys try this at your own risk! I might have found a fix looks like there is another modem floatng around called VRALHD I just flashed it in odin and guess what my phone seems to be working good here at home so try this at your own risk!

also if you google VRALHD modem galaxy s3 something will come up I cant confirm for sure this will help I will report back after some usage between now and tommorow.
Here it is on rootzwiki

Guess I had high hopes for that modem does not fix the issues nevermind lol I am hoping when the jellybean update hits with a new modem this will fix the problem the waiting game begins.
Installed the HD modem last night. I have one area at work that I can test it. I'll report back later with my results.
Update: Flashed the HD radio last night (in CWM touch recovery), install went fine. Didn't have an opportunity to check it out till this afternoon when I put myself in a exact known location where I could reproduce the 3g/4g constant hand-off with the "no sim" notification. Sent out 6 text messages and a couple of phone calls with no problem. Either this new radio did the trick for me or it may be coincidental that Verizon has corrected this "dead" area that would produce this problem without fail everyday I was at work. Couldn't tell you for certain. All I know is that it's not happening anymore at this particular location. I used to have the "no sim" "out of area" notifications constantly at my home until just last week when Verizon finally covered this area with a strong 4g service. Only time will tell as I travel thru areas that have weak coverage. It's very obvious that this problem stems from weak coverage areas and the SG3's inability to handle the transfers effectively.
