Easy way to install the latest update manually? - HTC Sensation

I'm running a 100% stock sensation and the OTA update hasn't hit my phone yet.
Is there an easy way to install it from my sd card? I read somewhere that i'd need to boot into recovery, but I can't get that to work either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

download the zip file
rename it to update.zip
put it on the root of your microsd card.
boot into recovery.
either TURN OFF FAST BOOT in the power menu and turn off phone, or pull the battery and put it back in
hold down volume down and power.
you'll get into bootloader.
use the volume buttons to go up/down and select recovery. press power to select.
you'll get triangle with ! on it.
press power then volume up real quick/at the same time
you'll get the stock recovery.
go down to select install update.zip.

Download the OTA to the root of the sd card. Then take batt out. Put batt back in. Then hold- vol down + power. That will take to you the hboot menu. Let it look for the .img and then it will take you to a new menu. From there click on 2nd icon, recovery. It will either start for you or you will get a red triangle. If you get the red triangle. press vol up+ power. then click on update from sd card, then click on the update file. Hope this helps.
Edit- I was too slow typing

Root folder would just be /sdcard if I'm using root explorer, right?
Can't get it to work, I'm sure I'm doing something stupid and not realizing it.

When I select 'apply update from sdcard' it says Invalid Operation and then reboots the phone without updating anything
It also says: "E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command" when I open up that second console.
Any clue why that's happening?

Yes. If you have custom recovery, it's not going to work. Has to be stock recovery.

That's what I'm using. Phone is still stock.

Yep I renamed it to update.zip. Below is what shows up right after I click 'install update from sd card'
--Invalid Operation--
success rebooting by reasonem-00

Same here.

This is really frustrating, I hope it doesn't affect my ability to get the OTA update.
Does anyone have any idea why we're getting the "Illegal Operation" error?

I didn't rename the OTA. It kept it as it was.... all though one thing that I did notice was that I would continue to get an error until the OTA was at the top of the list... Sounds weird but just keep trying.

Ok, on my phone when it downloaded the update, it put it in the /download/ folder on my microsd card.
You guys should try that maybe.

nope, same thing.I'll try to re-dl and keep the regular file name.
Double edit; tried the full file name in download folder, same thing again.

Do you know which one I would need for Canada's Virgin Mobile and where I can find it? I tried Searching and I couldn't find it.

I am getting the same error.stock ROM never rooted...may be European update don't work for Asian....
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App

Asian HTC Sensation Z710e
no go for me either. I get a same error message...
I've used OTA file for European and also US T-Mobile phones. It just wont work on my (Asian WWE) HTC Sensation.
It seems like I am destined to wait until end of September before I get my update...
I have purchased my phone at negrielectronics.com
Any other users of this version of Sensation? What's your experience?

I gave up, did s-off, and did a 1.45 based rom instead, heh.

I was lucky enough to get the OTA today and the other errors I had didn't prevent me from getting the update.
Good luck guys!

Stuck On Boot Screen (HTC quietly brilliant)

I just installed the Android Revolution HD 6.5.2. On the first boot, it's been stuck on the "HTC quietly brilliant" screen for like 15minutes. Did I do something wrong during the install? How do I fix this? Prior to the install, I used superwipe, flashed my phone then installed the Android Revolution HD 6.5.2.
Did you install the right firmware before flashing rom?

I may or may not have. Could you care to elaborate about the correct firmware? Thanks, it would help a lot. Kinda crapping my pants right now :/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098849
"It's necessary to flash new firmware package before flashing this ROM ---
--- Firmware package contains newest radio for 6.5.x ROMs ---"
Need to know what is your cid in order to install the new firmware but it should be this one
Download firmaware and put on sd card. Then reboot into bootloader while pressing vol down + power button. It will install the right firmware. Be patient untill the entire process is finished and prompted to reboot.
The screen may goes black a couple of times before the process is completed, no panic and just wait it to finish.
Later, remember to delete the PG58IMG from sd card.
Hope it helps
That's the exact guide I used to root my htc sensation. The problem is, my phone is stuck on the boot screen "HTC". Is there a way to access the SD card to reverse the installation of the rom? Thanks.

Need a sd card adapter or another phone
Is there anyway to start my phone? Is it bricked?
if you are able to reboot into bootloader you are not bricked.
Pull out the battery and reinsert, power on while pressing Volume down + power button and tell me what happens and what it says.
It boots into 4EXT Recovery. The only zip i have on my phone is superflash and Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.5.2. I tried formatting all the data, and doing a clean install of Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.5.2 but it keeps freezing on the screen that says "HTC quietly brilliant" when i reboot? Is there anyway I can get this working with what I have? Thanks man really appreciate the help.
I told you. Download the right firmware and put it in sd card, then reboot into bootloader and it will install the new firmware. Read my previous posts
In 4Ext recovery there should be an option like "togle usb" or something like this. If so, you are able to see the content of sd card and you can put the PG58IMG on it from pc
Yeah i hear you, but is there a way to access my root folder? It's not showing up as a removable drive. I dl'd the PG58IMG.zip, but I can't drag it into the folder, because when I plug my usb into my computer, it's not reading my phone as a removable drive = /
probably you dont have the htc driver installed. Download from Here
I downloaded the htc driver prior to rooting my phone. What are my options now?
So, your pc dont see your phone right?
In this case you need a sd card adapter and work from there.
Clearly you didn't install the firmware before flashing the rom. If you look at my previous posts I gave all the instructions.
Find a way to read your sd card from pc (adapter?) then put the firmware (PG58IMG) in the root of sd card and reboot into bootloader to install the firmware.
Later, remember to delete PG58IMG when you are done.
Then, all should work fine.
Good luck!
PS. hitting thanks button wouldn't hurt me by the way!

Yeah im new to the forum, ill definitely hit the thank button. I looked in the 4EXT Recovery program and I found there's an option called "USB mass storage device". Now I can drop the file into the SD card. Before I install the PG58IMG.zip, should I run superwipe first since I installed the Android_Revolution_HD-Sensation_6.5.2? Thanks

Yes better superwipe again even if you did before. Let's say start from the beginning just to be on the safe side
1) install firmware
2) superwipe
3) install rom
Hmm weird problem. I tried installing the PG58IMG.zip and it says ..

Opening update package...

Installation aborted.
Any clues?

You dont have to install PG58IMG from recovery.
Just off the phone (pull the battery out and reinsert). Power up by pressing volume down + power button (keep it pressed until hboot screen appears). The PG58IMG is automatically recognized by device and you will be prompted to update. Say yes by pressing volume up. Then be patient and wait for the entire process is completed as I told few post ago.
Sorry I forgot I had to install it in bootloader xD god, I hate roms! I wish I got into phone modifying long time ago. Im such a noob it's so sad
When you are done, remember that first boot takes a while so be patient and just wait

[Q] Wifi seems dead after 4.2.1 update not rooted, not unlocked

Hope someone can help, I installed the 4.2.1 update yesterday and after it finished installing and rebooting my wifi no longer works...It no longer sees any wifi networks in range and I live in an apartment building where it can normally see 8+ networks in range. I have turned the wifi on/off and rebooted several times, as well as cold booted (and made sure not in airplane mode)...anyone have any suggestions?
Tablet is not rooted nor unlocked and never has been. Have applied every OTA update prior to 4.2.1 with no problems. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Nope, just double checked. To add on I've now noticed that it has problems turning off, in that, it doesn't actually turn off when you hit the power key and select that from the menu - instead it always reboots. If I hold down volume while it is rebooting I can get it to actually turn off instead of reboot. Otherwise all the apps and the GPS appeared to work fine.
I did a factory reset last night and that did not help, but that did ensure that I lost all my data!
I am now wondering if the battery died while the 4.2.1 update was installing. Is there any way I can manually reinstall the official 4.2.1 upgrade by connecting the table to my PC? Does anyone think that would help?

The tablet turns on and works just fine except for the wifi and for some reason, when I try to turn it off, it always reboots instead of staying off (it turns off, then immediately turns itself back on). What is "booting into recovery"? Is that just holding the volume down button when turning on? If so, then yes I can do that and whether I pick the Android logo or the first choice, it doesn't fix the wifi...

I suggest to download the full Asus firmware .25 and reflash it, once done it will auto update back to JB 4.2.1. Just download the the .25, unzip, then rename the unzipped file to EP201_768_SDUPDATE then copy this file to the root of your microsdcard, then boot into recovery (volume down+power buttons), wait a bit then the update should start.
Thanks I'll give that a shot!
So I downloaded the .25 update, unzipped (which is another zip file?) renamed to what you posted, copied to the root of the sdcard, turned off, turned back on while holding down volume, selected RCV and it starts to install the update then after less than 5 seconds it gives me the dead android guy and just says "Error"...
Am I supposed to unzip the second zip file also? Didn't think so because that has a folder and a blob file inside of it.

Right now there are a few possibilities:
1. Download the ICS .30 version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946456, the reflash again.
2. Possible sdcard is not good - need to reformat your card
Please try both.

Cool - actually might be a great time for me to root since I just re-installed the 4.2.1 update and guess what - it broke the wifi again (can't see/connect to any networks). So I get to start all over again with rolling back the upgrade. Wonder why I'm the only one who seems to have this problem...oh well.

That still didn't work, pressing the volume up and power button at the same time doesn't do anything on that screen.
What I did was download the OTA update, press install. It shuts the phone down and then when it comes back up I see the green circle and it seems to be updating and about half way through the update it stops and becomes the red triangle screen.
Any other ideas. Also I still have S-OFF is that a problem?

Yeah, but the file listed on mega has lux_retca in its name. Moto X Play is codenamed as Lux, so maybe it is in fact the right file for XT1563? Maybe, it was just an error from poster MerlinMerlinMerlin?
Hmm... I have a Koodo X Play and just checked for the OTA and it wasn't available for me yet, but that has me wondering now. I don't wanna risk it until I'm sure though. Hopefully this means the OTA is out soon though.
Oops! I messed up the title.
Corrected the incorrect xt1053 by the correct xt1563
Just finished installing it through ADB sideload (I'm a Canadian Koodo user), I reinstalled the stock firmware before so that I could start on a fresh image. I had trouble getting into stock recovery at first. I was seeing a no command message when trying to enter it but, then I found the solution:
To get passed that point, you have to use the hold power + vol up button solution but, it's tricky, I had to try 3-4 times before getting it right. This part is kind of messed up, if you hold power button for too long, the phone interpret it as a reboot command. What worked best for me was holding vol up button alone for 5-6 seconds and then, I'd tap and release power button while still holding volume up button.

First, you need to have stock recovery, if you installed TWRP custom recovery, you will need to reinstall stock recovery. Entering stock recovery can be tricky, at first you may get an Android robot laying down with a "No command" message.

Once you are booted in stock recovery mode, you can simply follow those steps:
Setup ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
Download the OTA update .zip file on your PC and rename it to ota.zip.
Enable USB debugging:
Go to your phone’s settings » About phone » and tap “Build number” Seven times. This will enable Developer options on your phone.
Now go to Settings » Developer options » and tick the USB debugging check box.
Connect your phone to PC.
Now open the folder where you downloaded the OTA update .zip file and then open a command window inside the folder. To do that, do a “Shift + Right click” on any empty white space inside the folder and select “Open command window here” from the context menu.
Now issue the following window to command window to reboot your device into recovery mode:
adb reboot recovery
└ Check your phone’s screen, if it asks for “Allow USB debugging”, accept it by selecting OK/Yes.
Once in recovery mode, use Volume buttons to navigate up and down between options and Power button to select an option.
Select the “Apply update from ADB” option.
Now issue the following command to finally begin installing the OTA:
adb sideload ota.zip
└ This will begin the OTA installation.
Once the OTA zip is installed, select reboot from the main menu of recovery.

Please take note that once Marshmallow is installed, nothing is stopping you from reinstalling TWRP and then, it will work as if nothing ever happened. If you need SuperSU, make sure to use SuperSU 2.62, earlier version may cause problem with Marshmallow. Also, if TWRP , ask if you want to install Root, click "Do not install" as it would install an older version of SuperSU. That's why you need to flash SuperSU 2.62 zipfile.
And if I want to keep TWRP?
Any chance someone could post a TWRP backup after installing the OTA?

Yes, it would work but, knowing how slow download from filefactory is, it would be probably take a looonnnggg time to download. That's why I uploaded the correct recovery.img file on my Google Drive, for the benefit of everyone: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-OWWP0oC4yLRDhsSDV0Mng3cVk/view?usp=sharing

Do you have a link the 5.1.1 fw?
I'd like to do a total fresh install then kick off the ota.
Anyone tested this on the xt1562?

Sorry if this is very basic but how do I install it on a non-rooted stock phone? Does the file need to be in a specific directory?

Download it. Reboot into recovery. Install update from .zip file. Find your file and install.

Or use "adb sideload"...
Start recovery and press power+vol up, select update via ADB, then on computer enter "adb sideload update.zip" but replace update.zip with the actual filename.
Neither of the above methods work. I do not have any option to update from zip file in any of the menus available after starting with Pwr+Vol Down, and if I enter recovery mode itself I see the Android symbol and 'No Command' but the phone will not respond to Power+Vol Up, rather if these are held the phone will simply power down. Also when in recovery mode the phone will not respond to adb ( 'adb devices' list is null.) Adb does function normally on the same computer when the OS is running so no problem with the PC or drivers.
As noted above the phone is stock, meaning bootloader is still locked. Do I have to unlock the bootloader in order to apply the update? I would rather not do that.
TIA

Hold power, then quickly tap Vol Up to access the recovery menu, whole thing takes less than a second... it works. You can't press them both at the same time.
How do I do this if I have 18-16 already?

Yep, just did this earlier this morning. Hold power, tap vol up, release power.
Sadly I switched to an iPhone 6s that was given to me, I was patiently waiting for the MXPE update for the longest.
In fact, I was successfully running 7.0 Latin America version on T-Mobile back at the end of June, but when I switched to the Sprint 1 year free deal the ROM wasn't compatible.
I still plan to keep the MXPE but it is such a hassle to swap phones with Sprint. I miss that the most but could not pass up more reliable service for 1/10 the price (for a year).

Yes, that got it, thanks.
Just a quick question as well. I've tried multiple times to update by applying the zip. Go to apply from SD card and nothing shows but ./..
I use volume up and down to see if I can go to the file and nothing happens.
I didn't rename the file and I have tried it with file in /sdcard and downloads.
Any help?
Carrier is Sprint and have December security patch if that matters.

you need to make sure your sd card is not set as internal you have to change it to portable check my guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...ruction-how-flash-7-0-ota-pure-noobs-t3680835
Got it. Will try with a fresh SD card.
---------- Post added at 03:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:29 PM ----------
Format the SD card. Set as potable. Google drive won't download due to no SD card detected.
Any ideas?
Sorry I sound like such a newb. Haven't had to flash a phone in forever

Yes, I had the same problem. Your download directory is on your SD card and apparently the update file must be in internal memory (or at least your SD card cannot be formatted as a memory extension as mine was, and I didn't want to mess with swapping cards for the update because I has a lot of apps on the card.) I tried to find a directory in internal memory to place the file but didn't have write permission on a non-rooted phone. Solution was to use the adb sideload method described in post #4 and that worked well.
.
I received the notification on unlocked no carrier (backup for my note 5) I said I'm in said needed 910.7mb for install
OK download now said I didn't have enough space (had 3gb free) I freed up another 2gb and went to system update. Software up to date message what the ffffffffffffk lenovo?

No, you can't have TWRP... If you have TWRP you are not stock.

First I flashed it with a regular Motorola recovery mode and didn't work . Then I tried with twrp, I left the bootloader unlock when I did the fastboot process. I have the stock marshmallow 6.0
I don't know what is the issue

If it was truly stock and on 18-16 firmware, it would have applied with stock recovery, been verified to work dozens, if not hundreds, of times... If it did not, then you need to look at the error messages from stock recovery as to what the problem is (hint, press and hold power and tap vol up then release to see the recovery logs).
TWRP is not an option here...
