I don't think you will see Ice Cream Sandwich on the G2X. T-Mobile has all but written it off and threw it to the waste side. The phone itself will be powerful enough until you start seeing quad cores. Its a shame you don't like Samsung phones because the Hercules and the Prime really are going to be better phones than the G2X. You will also be sure to get Ice Cream Sandwich too.

Why spread this FUD? I keep reading posts like this and I think they're nonsense. What factual evidence do you see that indicates LG won't update the G2X? I'm asking for a sincere explanation because so far all I've seen are opinions with no real explanations attached to them and I can't help but wonder if everyone on here is just repeating what they heard in some other thread.
The phone has been out for only 4 months, has already seen one update, and has the hardware to be useful for quite some time to come. Unless LG is exiting out of the smartphone business, I see no reason for them NOT to update the G2X.

Yeap, LG might never announce it but it's very possible

Due to Nvidia not releasing their drivers/source for the tegra2 in the G2x, if this phone does not get ICS, any roms other than 2.3.3 roms will never be fully functional.
There is also no clear evidence that g2x will get ICS. Just to let u know.

The specs of this phone are great. If you get one that works it is great also.
But if you buy this phone with expectations of icecream coming to it , i would not do that.
The only proof i have that lg wont be bringing it to the g2x are the facts that tehy have a history of not updating their phones. the g2x got gingerbread because it was sold with a promise of it and it would probably still not be out without a lawsuit(probably- that means no proof) but the overseas version was out much longer and still hasnt recieved it.
I dont much like skinned devices. but the sensation is getting 2.3.4 GB and it had come with 2.3.3. . if that interests you can see whats saiod about the update and see if people are more happy with that phone.
But if you can wait for sept and rumors of first icecream phone coming in octoboer(which probably means november though )
if you get a phone that works and you are into modding. chances are much higher the modding community will bring icecream. But as someone said without proper drivers there tends to be problems.
IF you use streaming music to bluetooth you are at this time stuck on LG released roms. although the modifications of those are coming pretty good also. some good smali'ing going on.
Say LG did bring icecream to the G2x it would probably be a year from now. so if icecream is really your motivation id wait.
Hope this helps good luck either way.
But if you buy the g2x and have problems return it and dont look back.
youd think after all this time new phones would jsut work but i continue to hear of problmes with phones recently purchased so it continues to be a crap shoot.
Not to further feed the FUD fire, but history is usually a good predictor of the future. Since it took LG six months (it was released in Europe in March) to upgrade the O2X/G2X to Gingerbread, and even then with a Froyo kernel, I wouldn't hold my breath for ICS. Even with all the phone's issues there were only two or three very small updates to the O2X in Europe and none of them added any features or enhancements. LG could certainly have an epiphany and reinvent their Android development approach, but if you read the forums for their more recently released phones it hasn't happened yet. The just released Revolution's still on 2.2 and the G-Slate's still on 3.0. Until they get their act together they're a low-rent phone maker selling high-end phones.

I dunno, the Nexus S is definitely getting ICS and it only has 512 MB of RAM. The G2x also has stock Android (like the Nexus S), so that helps as well.

I wouldn't ever assume that a piece of phone electronics is going to be upgraded. Ever. If the phone works for you right now, and you like it, then buy it. If you buy it hoping that it will work when updated down the road, well that may be a long wait, and may never come. Look at the features now, decide how much you want to spend, whether you want to be in a 2 yr contract (or buy it outright- cost difference at this point says likely get it contract at this point), and understand that besides the Sensation, there are likely two more phones out for Tmobile later in October, the HTC Amaze and Samsung Hercules (both may be 42 mbps). Those, as new phones, will likely carry $200-$300 price tags on top of 2 year contracts, while the G2x , since being released in may, will be cheaper. But both of those are going to be skinned, while the G2x isn't.
My G2x works great on stock GB, worked great on Froyo, and if it never ever got Ice Cream (I think it will get it, and the one after that), I'd be fine with it as is because it does everything I want it to- music, exchange email, calendar, maps/nav, games, movies. No one even knows really what else ICS will bring, so don't pin hopes on ICS making a phone more magical than it already is.
Besides only this phone is magic, to me

Agreed. Wait until something else comes out. The new Nexus maybe.
Well, considering the G1 and MyTouch 3G made it all the way to Froyo, we still have a long way to go!
So back to the question, you should never get a phone looking to get future updates.
Always pick a phone for what it already has installed. Let the updates be a surprise.
If you look at the history of any Android phone whether made by HTC, Samsung, Motorola or LG most did not get more than one update.
Now the G2X is a bit different because it could take more than one update, but will LG bother with it. Probably not, if anything it will get ported by the Devs here at XDA.
At this point in time would I get the G2X?
NO ...
There are a few new ones around the corner that I would rather wait for.
Don't get me wrong I like my G2X. But I got it on launch day and at the time Hercules was way too long of a wait.
So if you want Ice Cream S. Then wait for a phone that already has that installed rather then wait and hope for what ever phone you get to get the update that might not ever happen.
We can sit here and guess whether the G2X will or will not get it, but at the end no one really knows.

Yea man kinda agree with him on this cuz I thought to myself man if I really wanted gingerbread I should have just got a phone with it, but I think at the time there wasn't anything good out, well that I liked, and I always thought the differences between froyo and gb weren't that different to really base me getting a phone with gb, now if ics comes out then that's something worth getting. But yea if u wanna phone were u know u will definitely get updates and not half baked updates lol then grab the new nexus prime, then again Samsung has been on top of things and pushed 4 out to the gs2

As far as i've see some people are getting the sensation 4g as a replacement, and sadly because it hit EOL, there will be no more updates supported by T-mo.
LG can still release updates, but they won't be official, and as far as we all know there won't be updates from LG either.
And that is it, no more LG products for me.
LG NEVER AGAIN.
Nvidia and LG NEVER again. Sucks

What a f%&@ joke! Hopefully i can get enough money for this pos to pay for breaking t-mo contract!
NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!
People that are members of XDA shouldn't really be upset with this news. The G2 and MT4G hit EOL like 6-8 months after release and look at how those two phones are doing. Dev and ROM's are still steadily being pumped out on those two phones.
I know we don't have that many devs but the this news doesn't affect oru phone in any way considering we mod it to our liking anyways. Plus I never expected LG to update this phone to ICS, and if they did, would probably take more than 6 months. We'll just have to rely on the CM team like most phone modders do. We'll be fine.
I agree, its just the way android phones are. If people quit buying phones that arent worth buying in the first place, they would be forced to put out way better phones and eol would take longer to happen. Its just a gimmick to get consumers to spend more cash look at the sensation, sensation xl, amaze 4g. All basicaly the same phone with slightly different specs yet we the consumers spend the cash and continue to let these greedy companies make subpar phones not worth an upgrade to. I didnt choose the g2x hoping lg and nvidia would support it, xda already does that!

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but decisions like this will probably be the majority of the reasoning of why I have begun thinking about swapping to an Iphone. Yes, the may not be exactly fast at upgrading the hardware of the phone to whats considered current. But, how long has the 3G been out? And it is still getting software updates.
LG - I love your tv's, but you can keep your damn phones.

I would say it's more perceived obsolescence, since the device still functions just as good as it did on day one.
I'm pretty upset about this though. Granted I got this device for free...but I'm already kinda tired of it.
I am not sure I understand. Does EOL status affect the quality or use of the phones we already? Does it suddenly make the phone unusable? Does it stop anyone to get his phone fixed under warranty?
EOL just mean they are not selling it any more. Not abandoned support-wise. Also if they are not going to update it to ICE, stay out of EOL doesn't change it any better anyway.
FYI. The car you are driving is probably EOLed, too. So are most appliances in your home.
I'm with a lot of people in here so far, this doesn't bother me at all. Even if there is no official update to ICS then we will still have it eventually anyway. My G2x more than likely isn't going to die before I upgrade to something better later this year anyway...

Why all the hand-wringing? It's not like this is completely unexpected. How many here are runing the tmo stock rom? I would bet not many.
ICS will be here soon enough. My question is if the phone is EOL, would LG and/or Nvidia be more likely to release the needed bits and pieces our devs so badly need? It is "old" technology now so maybe that is a possibility.
I guess if I had to have ICS today I could always pull out my battle tested HD2.
Think of it this way guys - this makes your G2X a rare gem in the android world.
I havent even had the phone that long(got it oct 2011), but its been bugging me since a week or having it. random reboot and shutdowns. Freezes ect.. Doesnt matter what rom oe kernel same problem. I believe the phone is overheating or the chip things its overheating and is locking up/ shutting down.
But its time to lay this phone to rest. Im moving on to a galaxy s2 in 2 months.
I believe this phone would have lasted longer if it didnt have the problems it has and if lg released the source code for updates.

We all love the phone. We hate that Nvidia/LG is not releasing the drivers for it and that it has been EOL'ed in just 8 months even thought the phone is still up-to-date in terms of hardware and software and can outperform iphone any day.
Its not getting ICS even though the twin brother O2x is and we cant get a port. Info on the X3 (successor) have leaked but we dont know how legit they are and if it will come to TMO or not. The myTouch line by LG is a downgrade. Having thought of selling the phone now and getting something else but a change in phones is not a must ATM.
Wanted to open this discussion because we are all going to have to upgrade eventually since this is the last stop and my decision on eventually my new phone will be somewhat community driven.
SGS2 is the best phone TMO has right now. The Amaze and Sensation are pretty much the same so you wonder why HTC released them in that manner.
The HTC Ville and SGS3 are rumored to be released, sporting dual-core 1.5 and ICS but what are your thought process and decision making factors that will go into eventually your new phone (X3, Ville, SGS3)?
Where was it said we would not get ICS. I have not heard anything Pro or Con. If the O2x gets it there should be a port. Phone, computers and electronics get ELOed all the time with no issues. Most computers are ELOed even before you buy them off the shelf at the store.
I am patiently waiting for the next best phone from Tmo, it has been somewhat depressing though as there haven't even been any decent rumored phones, this time last year we were looking at sensation / G2x, with SGII / Amaze shortly after. Crossing my fingers we get some kind of whiff from MWC next month.

LG announced G2x was EOLed (End Of Life), which means no support and no updates. there have been other members and posts claiming that isnt true and that an LG rep confirmed ICS for G2x but right now Im more inclined to believe that the phone has reached its end.
Just look at the fire sale TMO is having for this phone. Clear inventory.
Its a shame really, cuz the common person buying/using this phone will never realize its potential like we have here on XDA

I have both g2x and SgS2 .. I actually prefer this a little more for 2 reasons.. I like the HDMI which u need an adaptor on the galaxy, and imo this is a little more comfortable to hold. The Samsung is just too light.
And now I've been using miui .. makes me like this phone even more. Even though tmo and lg gave up, who cares. Its xda that's going to keep this phone going. Hell, look at the g1.

i know this will be my last LG phone. They just don't have the dev support to be in the phone business. I'll get a Samsung next if i do get another phone.
As for the drivers...I heard that the tegra 2 drivers were just released today. will post updated link here shortly.
Also i saw a MIUI ICS at rootzwiki. so even if we don't get an "official" ICS release, we'll still see it from cyanogenmod 9 and MIUI. so your fear of this phone becoming obsolete can be put to rest at least for now.
Looks like the LG x3 will come to the US as the T-Mobile G4x, much like the LG x2 came over as the T-Mobile G2x. Now, I'm excited about the phone, but am extremely cautious with my expectations. The G2x was a calamity and if it wasn't
for XDA I would have dumped T-Mobile. Today, this is the best phone ever (thanks to Hell's ICS rom) I consistently out perform my friends Galaxy SII's and Galaxy Nexus' (Granted I'm OC'd to 1.4Ghz vs their stock, but hey, that's why I'm on XDA and they are just sheeple phone buyers).
I remember preliminary reviews on the G2x giving it glowing reviews, but when it got to the consumers hands, it was a disaster. I don't think the people who did the reviews know exactly what the definition of review means. When I saw video reviews, the phone had no customer Icons or apps and it looked like someone played with it for about an hour than made a review of it, which would explain the glowing reviews the G2x got from 99% of the "professional" review sites out there.
Me, I want the G4x, I thrive to have a phone with the power of my Transformer Prime, but not with the headaches the G2x started with. I'll read a real reviews posted on XDA or other android forums for 2 months after launch before taking the leap. And hey, with ICS running so fantastically on the G2x, I could wait for T-mo to give a G4x for free on contract renewal.
Just wondering how other G2x owners feel about the G4x? I was considering going with the HTC Tegra 3 phone (The Sensation is getting ICS officially, while LG leaves the G2x dead in the water, thank goodness for community support), due to LG's terrible support of the G2x. Another consideration was to wait for the Krait based phones. Anand did a write up on the architecture and it looks like that Dual-Core can give the Quad-Core Tegra 3 a run for its money. Hey, at least this comes with the latest Android OS, not one 2 versions old (I still can't believe the G2x shipped with Froyo....shudder....)
Thanks for reading, have an excellent day!!!

this might be a dumb question, but whatever happened to the g3 or whatever? did they just skip over that product line? whatever happened to consistency?
I'm not really excited for it. Tegra chips have always been overrated IMO. The Snapdragon Krait processors are already said to perform better on lower levels of energy than the Tegra 3. Even the upcoming dual core Ti-OMAP's and Exynos' are said to perform better than the quad core Tegra.
Plus it's going to be closed source again so devs will have their problems.
So to me, good phone, well built, nice hardware and software, but the closed source is what will make me look elsewhere.
Phone looks decent. At this point in time phone hardware is to the point where pretty much any high end phone will get the job done just as good or slightly (not noticably in real world use) better than its competitors. It will come down phone design, screen size, and software support for me. I'm not going count LG out as this was my first LG phone. The Vibrant was my first Android phone and while Samsung was horrible with support for that phone they seem to have learned from it and are making an effort to do better. No reason the same cant happen with LG.

Actually ICS is coming to the G2x from LG in the 3rd quarter. Knowing how slow LG is, I'm guessing that'll be pushed back to 4th quarter. Still though, LG isn't abandoning us, instead they're just incompetent.

Its already here and getting better with each release. Besides that a port from any other tegra 2 based phone that gets ics is better than anything LG wannabe devs could release.

Is it me or is there something off about LG. The quality, no matter how good the specs are, just seems mediocre. Back in the day, I used to have an LG Chocolate and while it looked great, it was a piece of crap. Since then I never bought anything LG again. When the g2x came out I decided its been long enough and gave LG another chance. The g2x turned out to have as many annoying problems as the chocolate.
I am done with LG for good now. Fool me once shame on you , fool me twice shame on me.

Yup.. I'm done with LG as well. When it comes time for my upgrade on my G2X I'll be looking for an HTC or Samsung device.
I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I have never had a major issue with mt G2x and with all the dev support, it has been the best phone I have owned. The G4x looks promising but I will wait and see.

My resentment for LG has nothing to do with the developers. CM7 is the best thing that could have happened for my G2X. I was VERY close to ditching the phone until I came across the CM7 rom. With the CM7 Nightly 224 + Trinity kernel, my phone is usable once again. I still have to reboot my phone daily so that I can get working email and such (networking seems to hang if not rebooted daily). I can live with that.
As of now I'm happy with my G2x and LG. Number one I'm a brand loyalty kind of guy. I say that to say this I have no regrets with LG, so I'm really looking at continuing our partnership with the G4x.

Yeah the stock Rom for the g2x sucks but in my opinion they always do.... as far as hardware I'm satisfied with my g2x.

It might just come bone stock like the G2X did. The optimus 2x has an ugly skin overlay and we got it stock-ish.
It will more than likely be stock android but TBH I wouldn't mind this new UI I kind of like it

Looks like its coming pretty soon. Maybe some awesome devs can work some magic and get us ICS before AT&T does.

That's Awesome
So the original s2 and international only? Hope the skyrocket international comes along beside it so someone can port it to att for us.
Was really hoping for this to be att news. But I guess I should have less faith in them.
We have a different processor and gpu in our Skyrockets than the international version. Not sure if ICS for that device would help a lot for rom development on ours, but then again we have some amazing devs here on XDA
Or not...
They updated their article:

Update: Samsung's just tweeted that March 10th date is (sadly) wrong. It added that once the upgrade schedule is concrete, it'll confirm through its dedicated Twitter account.

As long as LG isn't the one to get it.....my wife's (after I pawned it off on her) Thrill is still yet to be updated to Gingerbread.
Comparing Samsung to others like Motorola and HTC, they are all the same. At least they have been pushing updates for bug fixes and such. The Thrill has yet to get even ONE update and they have major rebooting issues along with others. I would buy another Samsung. Would prefer they were the ones to get the next Nexus phone again.

I traded my Thrill for the Skyrocket because of this. SO glad I don't have that paper weight anymore. At least we know ICS is coming, and it's about ready. LG was just playing with our emotions.
I said the same thing about only getting Nexus, but I was unimpressed with the specs of this last one and my NS4G had horrible reception issues because of a ****ty antenna.
Add to this the fact that they omit an SD card slot <--That is the biggest deal breaker by far! I like being able to take all of my files with me from phone to phone and not have to spend hours transferring files when I get a new phone.
Its basically just the carriers, if you want to get updates and have an amazing phone get the international version! I would speend 300 bucks more to pick up a of gs2 when it first came out. But I get a free phone anyway. Same thing for the gs3 the galaxy devices are pretty dang good! I mean the gs2 is still on of the best IMO. Or at least just got past after a year of it being out. So grab that extra. Money and go for it

It sucks that they're taking so long. But, if you want to stay w/ GSM, I think the SR is still the best game in town ICS or not. Battery life on the Nitro and Vivid aren't nearly as good. And when I played w/ them at the store, they weren't nearly as responsive as the S2 (i777 or SR). The Nitro's screen was nicer, but wasn't so much nicer that I'd give up battery life and performance (and LG doesn't do much better w/ updates either). Nexus is cool, but if you don't wanna pay $6-700, value external storage, and LTE, that's off the table, too.
Samsung should've been happy w/ the original S2 (still one of the best phones available right now). They didn't need to release so many versions. I had in mind before buying this phone that the i777 will get ICS before the SR (either thru XDA or official) since the hardware is nearly identical to the international version. But, LTE was more important to me than ICS.
We can keep waiting for that perfect phone, or be happy that we have an awesome phone right now.
nexus devices are always inferior then the latest phone of that year...For example...Nexus S was inferior then SGS and now Galaxy Nexus in inferior then SG2....
I agree with above poster...with so many devs working for our phones, I think I would always go for a better hardware then the one which will get updated quickly.
I am using Samsung Captivate now, I am already running ICS (almost stable). it was one of best smartphone hardware wise 2 yrs ago..so its still getting development really good.
Waiting for official updates is dumb. The devs is where the good stuff comes from. ICS will be on our SR's from our devs loooooooong before Samung or ATT gets it to us. Standby for the good stuff. It's coming.
Sent from low Earth orbit with my SkyRocket.
So there's no XDA release of ICS yet for Skyrocket?
Not a fully functional or stable one.
Had it since January. Want a better quality screen (resolution-wise) and camera. Other than that, HellFire was awesome to me for the most part. The most recent ICS issues with data drops really bugged me too. GPS locks were never instant, but decent - another slight nuisance. I figure for $100-$150 more a Galaxy Nexus is worth it to me at this point, or something comparable. Actually if the LG Optimus 4G LTE works for me on WIND mobile that could be a good buy for only like $50 more. I just don't know if data will be 2G speeds or not. Yet to find out. If anyone knows that and sees this message, please do respond. It's been fun, this was my first Android. Got to really figure out a lot of stuff, since with this device our support basically is the XDA forums as LG doesn't help us any. Can't believe how bad the stock ROMs are for this device. Incredible they'd even release a device with those ROMs. Anyway, selling it today and then shopping for a new Android. Likely a Galaxy Nexus at this point. Please advise if there are other options! Thanks to xoxhell and all the other developers for this device.
update to stock 2.3.4 will fix all the problem you listed
Due to my experience with this phone and lack of support from LG, I am done buying any LG products in the future. This could have been a great phone had LG just given the community development teams what they needed from the start. Do you think the experience will be any different for other LG products? I don't.

Hate how LG/Nvidia/T-Mobile/whoever really made this phone one of the least desirable devices when it has so much potential...

Fully aware of this. HellFire 2.2 even is great and a rock solid ROM with no issues. But, I don't really want to run Gingerbread. For $100 more I'd rather get a phone with a much nicer screen resolution and quality (bigger screen size is a minor plus as well) and a phone I don't have to worry about ICS issues with. The support for this phone is crap, let's all face it. I will miss this phone, mainly cuz it was my first Android and I had fun learning how to use Titanium effectively, how to switch between ROMs, etc (since these are absolute necessities with this phone), but man I will not miss the little nuisances I constantly had with this phone because of LG's terrible support.
And yeah, I briefly looked at the 4G LTE but when it comes down to it... the support will be garbage as well. Great quality screen, but same old terrible LG support. Galaxy Nexus it most likely will be...
My daughter's G2X was stolen at school and I was thinking about giving her my G2X and getting a Galaxy Nexus. I don't know if its really worth it. 130 for another G2X or 400 for a Nexus with ICS that always gets updates.
MIUI = WIFI calling does not work which I rarely use.
CM7 = Phone freezes while unless I use faux and setcpu to down clock while screen is off but the battery life is amazing.
Weapon G2X = no T9 dialer unless I download one and use notigo to clear missed calls.
ICS = no drivers
Galaxy Nexus has working ICS with T9 dialer but no wifi calling.
I have some thinking to do.

Sold my g2x to t-mobile for their deal and got 100 towards a trade up... Switched over to the galaxy s2 and couldnt be happier. My g2x had some scratches on the bezel and a screen scratch so it was a good value deal. Just happy to have something that will get ics and.... Everything actually works consistently. Loved the g2x as a first android but it was underutilized unfortunately.

One of the best things about the G2X is the size... it is a very compact phone.
That is why im staying with mine for now...I use it as a cheap wifi hotspot in my van and takes up no space...
All the issues ive had in the past have gone away since ive updated the baseband last week...GPS is amazing and everything else has been flawless with the stock, rooted kwes rom...

It could have been smaller if they didn't make such a ridiculously large bezel at the bottom of the G2x. So much wasted space. O_O

That's ALL manufactures in the US when it comes to updates. I had the Vibrant before this and it was quickly forgotten about by Samsung. If I don't like the nexus when I'm ready to upgrade my phone I'll be done with android due to the poor software updates.

Put these phones side by side and don't really notice a difference size wise at all, despite the Galaxy Nexus having the bigger screen. And I saw this new baseband, any ICS support yet? Don't really care either way. Same old stuff with the LG phone, having to constantly hack and update it to it's wannabe Galaxy Nexus status yet it will never happen. The extra $100-$150 for the GN is worth it to me. I totally understand how it's not for some people. Although, I would think if you know enough about phones to even know about the XDA forums then IMO it probably also would be worth the extra money to you to get a GN. That's just my thoughts. Also, the screen resolution and screen quality is considerably better on the GN.
I've been there, that was me, trying to defend the LG Optimus P999. But I gave up defending it, time to switch. I was in denial long enough lol. Well that, and money was an issue for me a few months back...

The difference is that most manufacturers at least release a working rom while being tight arses about community support. LG didn't release a decent rom until well after a year from release, and it's already outdated.
You can't go wrong with the galaxy nexus... I want one now. The only "flaw" is that there's no more mass storage device support in ICS. I use Linux, so I either use my network drive over smb or adb to transfer files. Windows works fine though.

As bitter as I sound about the LG Optimus P999, I would say it is an outstanding value phone. Throw on HellFire 2.2 based on Gingerbread and this thing is super snappy and runs great. It's when you're trying to have the latest and greatest as far as software goes... this thing really pisses you right off.
I did it. I ordered one. I'll still have 3 g2x's in the house.

Yeah, I'm getting my GN today but still have 3 friends or family that have the G2X and IMO that is like the perfect phone for them still because of valueerformance and them not being techie's not caring about the latest and greatest. Sounds like this baseband is far along enough to go with now. I shyed away when I still had my G2X, mainly because it limited what ROMs you could put on. Can you put on HellFire 2.2 with the new baseband or any ICS ROMs yet? I'll still be monitoring the xda G2X forums as my friends and family still own it.
