When updating roms? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Miui Crespo 1.8.5 and I would like to update to Miui Crespo 12 or 19. Using CWM 4 can I using advanced restore just the data from 5 so I can have all same Apps, ect.? Would I have to install every App and completely setup the new updated rom?
Also, when restoring a backup do I have to switch back to the previous rom? I switched to Brainmaster but I wanted to go back to my Crespo recovery. I heard I had to flash the Crespo rom before restoring the backup, was that necessary?
Thank you all for your hard work.

and need to also wipe data if flashing DIFFERENT rom, this will lose everything so do backup if u need

every roms which are working on AT&T infuse will work on Rogers infuse (I'm using a rogers one as well)
for GB I recommend Rogers stock 2.3.3 or MIUI galnet
for ICS I strongly recommend Paranoid !
Okay excellent, thank you
if my infuse came stock with GB, will and ICS rom work on it?

Yes, it will. The advantage of us having the Rogers version of the Infuse is that we have Gingerbread bootloaders. This means that if we ever want to flash ICS, we are not bound to get "rainbow" recoveries.
As for flashing ICS, please read a lot before you flash. It is best to know every single thing to avoid problems.
If you need any help, you can PM me.
Good luck!

Yes, any ics ROM would work just fine on the Rogers' phone (I am another Rogers user on custom ROM - Remics 1.3). Make sure you have a good backup and a working recovery firmware (Get CWM ROM Manager from Play store and flash ClockworkMod Recovery) before flashing. Recovery firmware is key for flashing - both for successful flashing as well as recovering from a failed one.
Good luck!

I never trust Rom manager...its been known to cause bricks for some...
You can also get recovery from the second post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
If you plan on flashing ics you will have to double flash though...

+1. ...and sometimes restoring a backup that was made using rom manager does not work. The only thing I use rom manager for now is to rename my backup (give it a "name" versus a "date")
Ah okay, I got the clockwork mod recovery with Odin so am I good if I wanna flash an ics? And what's meant by double flash?

Okay. Here follow these instructions very well.
- Go to CWM recovery
- Go to backups and restore
- Backup current ROM (should take around 5 minutes)
- Download ICS ROM of your liking
- Put it on your phone (internal SD NOT external)
- Go back to CWM
- Wipe data
- Wipe cache
- Go to advanced, and then wipe dalvik cache there
- Flash the ROM
- Reboot
- It will be stuck at Samsung Logo with Cyanogenmod logo as well... I advise you to wait 30 seconds and THEN pull-out battery
- Put battery back on
- Reboot phone
- Go to Mounts and Storage
- Wipe system, data, and cache
- Flash the exact same ROM you flashed earlier
- Reboot
- SUCCESS!
Now, you might encounter APN Settings (data not working) problems.. I advise you to find the APN settings here on XDA (I'm on Virgin Mobile Canada so I cannot provide these.)
ALSO, if you run into problems with Google apps (I assumed you downloaded a ROM that already has them), download the "gapps" file. Link should be found on the OP of the ROM post you downloaded.
Have fun!

(x-post from Q&A) Nexus S stuck on Rom

Hey guys. I've been using rustyjay's port of rasbeanjelly on my nexus s for the past week or so. When I go to change ROMs, my phone gets stuck on the boot logo screen of whatever Rom I just flashed. I've tried flashing stock, wiping all my data and wipe cache and dalvik cache, all with no luck. Any ideas on how to fix it?

[Q] Updating CM10 - is that safe and possible?

Just a quick question but an important one. Is it safe and that easy to update my CM10 just through:
Options -> About Phone -> CyanogenMod updates?
Do I need to know something else?
Thank you for reading in advance!

Ah ok... So there should be no problem updating from one nightly to another.
But to be safe make a nandroid backup before updating. Personally I never used the updater. Just downlod the nightly the usual way (or use the updater to download the rom) and flash it in recovery. Wipe cache and dalvik prior to that.
MrBerni
I do not need to factory reset, right?
And I need to do is install the zip from sd card and that's all? No gapps installing?

No need for factory reset as long as there are no problems afterwards. So make a nandroid to be on the safe side.
GApps will be backuped and restored during the update process so no need to reflash them. Again: As long as there are no problems with it afterwards.
So just downlod the rom, boot to recovery, make nandroid backup, wipe cache and dalvik cache and then flash rom.
MrBerni
Thank you for info

You must trim the rom and delete unwanted and unuseful apps from system ....
Delete the stock keyboard and use any other like slideIt etc ...
You must have atleast 50 mb free in system partition before you flash the gapps ..
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
But when we flash the rom system memory already get wiped so it contains only preinstalled apps. So how we delete unusefull apps.
N what is trimming?
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda app-developers app
1. You have posted this in wrong section.
2. Trimming is a very easy task. Just delete the apk files from the zip located in /system/app
3. the easiest thing is to use a CM10 ROM which is already tested like the Rashed97's CM10 or EvoKing or Paranoid Android 2.99.
Or trim before flashing by using Oone rom editor. Specially made for trimming cm10..roms !
Sent from my LG-P500
This problem happens when i install rom and gapps without reboot.
I have to do a full wipe, install rom, reboot, install gapps and reboot again. :good:
Regards.
Alternatively, if you don't want to go through the hassle of trimming a ROM, just get one of the releases that come pre-packaged with minimal GAPPS, such the the Jenkins RC releases.

Avatar rom encountered an error on first installation

The first time i tried to flash the avatar rom, it said there was an error that occurred, so I attempted to reflash the ROM. After the rom was successfully flashed, my apps don't show the name under the app icon, and when i try to open the advance settings, it says that there's an unexpected error that occurred. I flashed this rom from gingerbread 2.3.6 after flash rooting to stock 2.3.6 using the option C from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523.
I cleared all my app data and cache. Should i flash it back to gingerbread and then try to reflash avatar?

You jump from gingerbread 2.3.6 to jellybean 4.2.2????
Because you have to go from gingerbread to ics and then to jellybean.

Do one think..use touchwiz launcher...
I m using same and also use touchwiz theme for touchwiz launcher..the most simple and friendly launcher..
Download touchwiz launcher..
(Dwnld flashable zip so u cant install it so go to recovery mode and flash this zip.)
Download touchwiz theme from here(this is not flashable file so u need to install this file) .
go to settig>themes>select touchwiz>apply.
Apply this after flashing above zip file.
Let me inform it works or not.
