My Samsung Focus only gets GPS position updates once per second (1Hz). At 100kmph (~62mph), you've already moved ~28meters or 91 feet. Thats pretty inaccurate.
Are there any WP7 phones with built-in GPS that update more frequently than 1Hz?
$40 external Bluetooth GPS units update at 10Hz and some wired usb units update even faster than that. But Microsoft isn't supporting the SPP Bluetooth profile even with Mango update and I see no way to communicate with a generic USB device through the micro-usb port cause you don't get native access to write a driver. So no luck getting external GPS working with the current framework
I'd like to build a list of the GPS update frequency of the various phones out there. Hopefully they are not all using the same crappy GPS chip...
10 Hz GPS update will drain your battery much faster... Also, GPS software have some interpolation algorithms. From my own experience with Navigon 3.0: I very like WP7's default GPS accuracy.

I don't care about battery life though; my scenario has power cable available (non-hand-held scenario).
The compass and accelerometer sensors are available on my device but unfortunately the Samsung Focus does not have a gyroscope.
Accelerometer and compass samples at 50Hz, but they are fairly noisy. The new Mango/7.1 Motion API should help filter some of that noise and maybe I could get a reasonably accurate equivalent of a 2Hz GPS with some tricky math.
Double the accuracy is double the accuracy!
BTW, for what kind of tasks you need this accuracy? As I said before, Navigon 3.0 (see corresponding forum) works very fine and precisely, as a standalone Garmin, for example (what is internally also WinCe device ).
I'm not doing GPS maps. Everybody's done that Mine is more of a real-time motion analysis and visualization. I don't want to give away too many details cause I don't want someone to beat me to the punch. I do know that nobody has an app that does what I want on the marketplace yet.

I installed JFMStudios GPS Performance on my S710 but unfortunately it didn't run on it Said the .exe file couldn't be found or not all modules are available or something like that. Installation went smoothly and I checked the folder there PPCGPS.exe on Program Files/GPS Performance. Still no run.
Could it be because it's made for WM2003...? I have tried googling the web for similar apps but no luck.
Is there other such programs available and if someone has succesfully used JFMStudios' app on Vox please tell me how you did it.

HTC Vox is not listed as a compatible device. Nor is any other smartphone as far as I can see, so your answer would be no, no chance of getting it to work.

Until you posted I had not even heard of this particular application. I have to wonder in any case how accurate such measures could be given the inherent lack of precision in the GPS positioning: small variations in the position data across such short timings would have a huge impact on the reported speed and acceleration data. In normal driving conditions i.e. standard navigation programs, any errors in speed are averaged out but for such an application it strikes me that you would not get much time for that. Still, it is an interesting idea.

I am new to the forum and also the owner of an HTC Fuze. I have been playing around recently with the GPS on the phone and got me thinking. I live in NY and we have a CORS network of gps base stations that are fed by the use of ntrip.
I was wondering if their was any way to use the gps signal on my phone and the connection to this CORS network to give me sub inch accuracy on my phone...then not sure what I would do with it then. But I do live on a farm and I would like to see some type of precision agricultural use.
I guess I need a way to have the GPS on the phone talk with the GNSS internet radio and then give me spot on guidance and such.
Please let me know your thoughts or if I need to explain better.

That will save the cost of a geodetic device, which is many times the cost of a Fuze. Further, it will lead the accuracy of the buildin GPS into millimum class.
Not dig into this further, would you go further to tell these:
Is that CORS data encrypted?
Is that accessible through public internet or VPN?
Is there copy right or intellectuall property right issue involved? (I don't think so, but better make it clear first)

Yes, the NYS CORS anyway. It accessible from the public internet (although they require you to register with them) But I believe there are other free streams. I also believe it was modeled after being able to be sent threw GPRS.

First make sure there is no satisfied freeware currently available for WM.
If so please ask a moderator to move this to the development & hackings section. And Add tyis sentence on the title: Call for developers for revolutionary GPS app!
I'm sure somebody here can develop this. You know the geodetic device was invented many years ago with very weak profiles comparing to current WM devices. The hardware on our phone should be capable to deal with these calculations, and the WM Pro platform should be capable to support such an app. Anyway it should not be a biggy for many masters here. But it is a biggy for gps users with high accuracy demand for any reason.
Edit: Did you try install that wince cab on your phone? I think some of WINCE apps can just run on WM. Please backup your data first.
Edit2: I tried to install it on my device, at first it did not show up in start menu, then I found the cab just put files and shortcut in the folder names in French. But there is no registry involved in the cab. Only three files. And then program UI itself is in English. Just run the executable from the folder will go right out of the box. So please try it. I did not try to connect & loggin yet, due to not registered account.
Edit3: Looks like the cab is only access the data from internet, convert the data format and export the data, but we still need a geodetic/gps software to process/use the data.

The idea of using NTRIP to make a Windows Mobile GPS device sub-meter accurate crossed my mind. After some research I found this thread.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any software capable of doing this. My idea is that it should be possible to accomplish this goal, using a combination of existing tools (which would be really cool!).
As wg5566 notes, there is a (WM) tool called GNSS Internet Radio, which is capable of downloading NTRIP corrections. It turns out this software works, but does have some flaws. Someone wrote another open source tool which is better (?), but unfortunately it isn't built for Windows Mobile (see: http://lefebure.com/software/).
More searching revealed a (dead?) project on codeplex: SharpGPS. It's an unfinished demo. It does however seem to be designed to do exactly what we're suggesting in this thread.
My idea: Completing the WM version of SharpGPS with parts of GNSS Internet radio / lefebure NTRIP client should result in a tool that's capable of upgrading a WM devices' gps signal to sub-meter accuracy through RTK/DGPS corrections over NTRIP.
Any ideas / suggestions about this?
It's already been done for the commercial market
Land surveyors, construction companies, and farmers use RTK GPS and RTK GNSS correction services on a regular basis. Some are free and some are paid subscription. They can be either NTRIP protocol with casters or individual TCP or UDP connections. Examples of software available are Carlson SurvCE and MicroSurvey. Read Carlson's support site for how they deal with the data flow using such networks on SurvCE (Windows Mobile and CE).
I have worked in land surveying using such equipment, and it generally requires dual frequency receivers, RTK corrections, and high quality antennas to achieve 1-2cm 95% CI horizontal precision. The current GPS chips in cell phones are only single frequency and so the best you could expect under ideal conditions is 2'-3' precision using some form of differential correction like WAAS or beacon or DGPS via NTRIP. Under average conditions, the precision will likely be in the 10-20' range. The dual frequency receivers take care of the large errors caused by radio waves traveling through the ionosphere.
Due to the limitations of batteries, antennas, and space for more chips in cellphones, the future of location accuracy will likely include some combination of GPS/GLONASS and cellular radio signal frequency timing calculations from cell towers. True Position, with its U-TDOA technology, is one example of measuring the time differences of cell phone radio waves using cell towers with known coordinates. Rumors (from surveying journals) have it that there are current patents in place that can allow for sub foot precision using such methods when sufficient cell towers are present for multilateration.

Lance lefebure is a really cool guy I'm sure he wouldn't have any problem building a wm version but it is going to takea lot more than that to get rtk to a cell phone.

Nope PDA with support for external GPS with a builtin reciever that even sees glonass satellites (russian constelation). That was made specifically to do RTK mapping. It does have a GSM radio for data to connect to the cors.
Phone positioning using CORS
To perform a CORS (Network Reference correction we need a GGA stream from the GPS in your device. This allows us to remove the anomalies and provde the correction stream. As phones use a sirf II chip or similar they do not have input capability to output the NMEA stream to achieve this.
This one works great! it will connect to an Rtk receiver and get the nmea string from it or will use the internal GPS to be able to register on the CORS network. It will then stream the corrections over Bluetooth to a receiver or even a repeater radio. It won't however correct the internal GPS. http://antrip.dyndns.biz/Home/DownloadTrial

I'm using Sygic Mobile Maps 10. I've tried IGO8, and was a devotee of TomTom7... Sygic basically takes the bes bits of both - IGO is for too complicated and messy for straightforward navigation, tomtom is a little bit tired graphically - SYgic has the same tomtom look and feel, but smoother graphics, starts quickly, gets a fix fast, works well. Route calculation could be a little better, but in general I think its batter than tomtom, and a good solution if you don't want the over-complicatednesss of IGO.
I have tried the Android version, and I think it's crap. It calculates route slowly (Qualcomm 512MHz), it has weird behaviour when moving (the map flickers) and it has a huge GPS lag - it points me on the map with at least 100-200 meters delay. And I really cannot understand their UI experts, because the font is so tinny (on 3.5" display) that when I am driving I barely can read the information (current speed, remaining time, remaining distance etc). The only feature which I like is the implementation of the custom POI alerts. But this cannot make me to use it anyway.
In my opinion, there is not better GPS navigation soft than iGO 8 (for WM) on the market at all.

I'm in need of a rangefinder, and was wondering, why not my always handy Leo?
Since it has a focusing function for the camera, it must have some sort of a sensor for measuring distance - or whatever algorithm it uses might be calibrated for actually displaying the(approximate) measured distance.
I would pay for a usable app.

Coming over from a Touch Pro 2, the only thing I actually miss is Nav N Go IGO 8. It was honestly the most amazing GPS I think I have ever used. It had so many little features Like the ability to customize the 3 little info spots with any dynamic value(like Current Speed, ETA, Miles Left, ect), and the little little "Next maneuver after the current upcoming maneuver" display. All of these things made that GPS wonderful. I've been spending days looking for a New GPS software to use on the Evo, but haven't found the perfect one yet. I wanted to review the GPS's that I have tried, to give you all an idea of what you can expect from some of the popular GPS's. I'm a Network Engineer who works alot in the Field, so I use GPS's every day. I've been able to log about 50 miles which each GPS so far.
Destinator 9:
This was a GPS that I found highly rated on the Market... Only issue is, it doesn't recognize the maps on the Evo, making it useless. Shame.
Google Navigation:
I've read so much Hype on this.. But I honestly don't see where it's coming from. Google Navigation is Available in many Countries. It's good with routing, but the interface isn't the best looking interface, and the HUD lacks alot of the extra information that other GPS's show. Google Navigation does do traffic, but doesn't auto reroute (Atleast, I dont think it does). One cool feature is the ability to add layers to the map. You can have a satellite overlay, as well as have an overlay for food, gas, reststops, ect. Otherwise, nothing else really makes this stand out from any of the other GPS's. Oh... and one last thing... The voice in this GPS makes me want to kick babies into tree stump grinders.
Sprint Navigation(Aka TeleNav):
SPrint Navigation is actually an OK GPS. Unless your on the Everything Plan with Sprint though, you arn't getting this GPS for free. It runs $10 a month. Sprint Navigation is only available in the USA, but it's Big Sister; Telenav is available outside the USA as well. The interface is OK. It shows all of the needed information in a News ticker type of display. The ticker is on a Yellow background which makes it harder to see sometimes. Routing and Address finding in this GPS is the best out of any GPS i've used.. Including IGO 8. The Traffic feature isn't too good. I'm not sure where it's traffic source comes from, but I've only rarely been alerted to traffic with this program. And when the time comes to click on that magic re-route button, the magic for some odd reason doesn't seem to happen. It reroutes me right back into the traffic. Since I'm on the Everything Plan, I currently use this in conjunction with the next two GPS's.
Waze:
Waze is a great little community Driven(Har har, no pun intended) GPS, with an amazingly responsive development team behind it. It's available in most country's. What sets Waze off from the rest of the GPS's is it's Community aspect... When you use Waze, your linked up to Hundreds of other Waze Users in your area and around the world. This provides real time traffic monitoring from other users, as well as user submitted accident reports, and speed trap reports. You can also view and post "Chit Chat" comments on the route/map as well so you can talk to user Waze Users. Why you would want to do this while driving? Well lets say your stuck in a horrible traffic Jam caused by an accident with a few other Wazers.. Wouldn't it be cool to have a little conversation going with them all while you wait in stand still traffic? You can also see other Waze users near you on the map as well, which is pretty cool. Waze tries to make driving into a game too. Since the Map is generated mostly by user driving around and sending this information from their app to the waze server, Waze automatically puts "cookies" near unexplored area's. If you drive near these area's you get points. With the traffic being user submitted and automatically monitored based on users speed, ect, the traffic reports are really good. Although it's suppose to automatically reroute around traffic, it doesn't work too well, although their are small workarounds posted in the waze forums, that seem to help users. The interface is ok... It's not the best. It could use a 3D map mode instead of the older 2D almost overhead style of map. There are also times where it won't find a certain address. The Map might also be a little incomplete in certain area's... But this might be just because I haven't zoomed in far enough or it's outside my route, but I also suspect it might be because not enough waze users have driven those area's yet. One limitation as well, is the 200 mile routing limit. You can only route a trip thats less then 200 miles, although this might be increased at a later date. Since it's the waze servers that do the processing, I suspect the limit is in place to keep the load on the servers down. A work around to that limit is to just rout to a city thats less then 200 miles away between you and the destination, and then once you get there, route to the next place thats less then 200 miles, and so on. This is a GREAT free gps to use if your just commuting to work and home, and want traffic alerts, but can also work as a stand alone GPS to use on longer trips (Less then 200 miles though).
NDrive:
NDrive is another Paid GPS program very similar to TomTom and IGO 8. I use this as my Offline GPS (It stores maps on the SD card and doesn't use Data). It's the closest to IGO 8 as I could find. It has all offline maps, and can do Predictive Address Typing, which is nice if you don't quite know the spelling of the place your going, or need to find a cross street. The interface is pretty, but I wish there was a way to control the zoom level. Living in NJ, right outside NYC, it's hard merging onto the correct highway when NDrive decides to zoom out when you get near a junction with an entrance to 4 difference highways. This GPS show's alot of information. There is an information pane in the lower left that you can configure to show different values, like ETA, Arrival Time, Miles Left, Speed, ect. The routing on isn't the best. Infact I think it's the worse out of any of the others i've reviewed. I've ran into experiences were it would route me an extra long way to get somewhere (Ever hear the term, 3 rights make a left? Well NDrive has!), and I've also run into issues with Address's being anywhere from a block, to 2 miles off on the road where they are suppose to be. If it wasn't for the routing issues, this GPS would of been my Number 1, and a very very possible replacement for IGO. It's available in most countries. Although the application on the Market is Free, the Maps are not. You get a 7 day free trial with any map though, and you don't need a PC to download the maps. It'll download right over 3g slowly, or if your lucky and have 4g, it'll download over that, or even wifi.
I'm still on the lookout for the perfect Offline GPS Igo Replacement. Anyone know any other GPS programs I should add to this?
I use Google nav all the time, and yes it does auto-rerouting. Just clearing thing up.
Pretty comprehensive list, if you're still looking for alteratives, I'd suggest giving copilot 8 a try, although people have been complaining about the maps

Sprint Nav is nothing like Telenav and they're the same software. It feels like Sprint Nav UI watered down. I think I'll stick to Google. I do however like Waze.
I like the Google Maps Navigation. The voice is horrendous, I will agree, but it's pretty convenient to use.
I have an in-dash navi in my car (Pioneer unit, running iGo 8) and I find the Google app to be a very adequate substitute when I'm in a rental car.
Telenav allows you to go online at my.telenav.com and find your addresses on the computer first. You can find your POI easily.
along the same lines does anyone know of a gps app that I can store the maps on the phone with? I am in data service-less areas a lot of times and it seems like no one has ever thought of this before?
I started using Co Pilot, and it seems to work pretty well. Maps are well priced too. It stores the maps on the SD Card. So no data is needed.
There is also Motonav which is a modified igo and even uses igo map files. Its not as good as igo on wm but its not bad.

On Android:
I tried Co Pilot: It cut out the audio so I could not play MP3s until I shut it down.
Refunded.
I tried NDrive but the zoom feature sucks and roads disappear way to quickly. Also it seems there is no way to add via point to you route.

I too am waiting for either iGo or Garmin to come out with a good Android app.
In the meantime I am going to have to buy a stand alone nuvi for when I am riding outside reception areas.

Anybody know if any of these work in Baja California, specifically Tijuana area? I suspect the data connection will work, but I don't know what the roaming charge is down there, or how much data GM uses, for that matter.

Both have a deal breaker for me that if you zoom out the roads disappear too quickly making it next to impossible to plan off road riding routes.
