[Q] Radio location not working on Thunderbread 2.6? - General Questions and Answers

Just put Thunderbread 2.6 on my phone. Installed the radio on the thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160637&highlight=radio.
GPS wasn't working; did the load-sense-ROM fix. That seemed to work fine, but a remaining problem is that the system won't sense my location properly by 3G/4G connection alone, as it's supposed to do on a vague level -- it thinks I'm in Moldova (I'm on the west coast of the US).
Thoughts/advice?

Try atleast two different roms and see if the GPS works. If thats a no go flash a different radio.

the GPS actually works fine; just the cell tower radio doesn't recognize where I am (e.g. a weather app, when gps and wifi are off.)
how do I tell which radios are good for my phone?

did you enable GPS in settings? It's disabled by default.
GPS on my phone since 1.5 has been 10x better than before. aGPS ftw.
mine seems to be working fine. have you updated your radio?

My gps picks up my location allooooot faster with the new radio too.

could be, i have no club about the dude's though, im using Haykuro's ADP1.5 and updated my radio. You probably should do it if you can, it MAY fix your problem and it wont hurt anything.
all the radios posted are the same
it doesnt matter what build you are one
the radio is for the cupcake rom aka 1.5
so go ahead and update your radio
and if your gps is still giving you problems and wipe will be the best bet
just rmr to back up
I believe 1.5 supports A-GPS, which uses external servers (accessed over the data connection) to help speed up GPS initialization and in some cases calculations. This does leak some location data off the phone though, if you care about this.
Okay thanks for the suggestions i will try to do this today and see what happens...

Is there anyway to use the old method? What about us users without a data plan? That kills the GPS for us.
I had the same problem when I updated my phone to JF1.51. I just wiped and re-installed. Now my GPS is faster then ever.
You are not alone
I have updated my radio and spl, enabled gps, and still it takes 30 minutes for the phone to find my location. I have asked on occasion about this, and a few others have had the same problem. So I don't know what to tell you. Glad I could be no help to you.
To speed up GPS location, the new updates also include aGPS, a = assisted.
This is when it will utilise your internet connection via wifi or 3G/EDGE to triangulate your position between transmission towers to help give a rough estimate as to where you are in the world, giving the actual GPS unit a headstart in locating where you are.
You would need to enable this though. Settings > Security & Location > Use wireless networks. Also make sure Enable GPS Satellites is enabled too.
Cell location (without gps) seems to be broken with 3g in 1.5. If I switch to edge, I get my approximate location every time.
But if I use 3g, google maps rarely finds my location, unless I turn on gps.
What build are you using? I've had no problems with Dude's ROM personally as previously I was on JF before taking the jump to a more updated and heavily optimised ROM. Could be worth trying it out if you are still on JF.
I have the same problem, now I can only use GPS with wireless connection.
If I untick the wireless option, the GPS become useless.
I'm using Rogers v3 rom, latest radio and SPL, can anyone help us to solve the problem?

I can't remember if 1.5 had this, but I think it did. Did you get a prompt when you enabled it via settings (not through a second hand app, actually through the internal settings)? My GPS didn't work until I went in and disabled/reenabled both the Cell and GPS location services. When I did this, I got a prompt from Google to agree to terms (or whatever) and after selecting - whamo. Worked.

GPS on AT&T Fuze with ROGERS?

Hey ive unlocked and flashed to a sweet NRG rom and love it. I just want to use google Maps (or something similar) to find my position on a map (turn by turn maybe?). I remember with my iPhone when I first had it the GPS worked great then one day I was never able to get my actual position (just within a certain amount of meters).
Did rogers shut down GPS?
Now on my new phone when I goto "GPS location" in google maps it searches for a satellite but doesnt seem to get my position (0)... Is there a setting I can turn on to allow GPS or do I need to cal rogers and rip on someone? LOL
keep up the great work guys!!!
- Eddy
I just turned 3g on and did the HTC GPS tool. I opened the port and started the test and then menu-Information and I dont seem to have a position.
any ideas guys? seems like rogers problem.

GPS on the HTC is using the basic GPS Signal coming from satellites. Are u outside or near a window to a fix ?
Look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System
What u used was A-GPS what is assisted GPS with help from Cell Phone provider. It gives faster fix and a pseude gps in buildings.
Go outside with ur cellphone with clear sky view, start the htc gps tool and u should get position fix within some minutes or even seconds. There is no need for 3g because the gps itself does not need any cellphone connection. It takes satellite signals to calculate the position.
When u update quick gps it is faster in the position fix because it already knows some basic sat data. But still no phone connection necessary for using GPS.
The google map u then only see with data (3g or wlan) not because of the GPS but because of the drawed map graphics wich have to be loaded.
ok i will try the outside thing although I have the phone pointed to the window pretty much. Checking rogers website both phones only have a-GPS but I still cant get an actual location on either. Only about a 4 block square or circle.
EDIT: ok i enabled A-GPS on the touch pro and still no luck with google maps. It still seems to be looking for actual GPS
OK im managed to get it working. I changed the port to com5 and scanned found some sat's I had to change the bit thing to 56700 on com5 within google maps. Seems to be working like a charm!

Lost Network Location (Cell Tower only) after Rooting?

Hello,
I searched EXTENSIVELY for a solution, but haven't found one yet.
PROBLEM: Phone won't locate using the cell tower triangulation method after rooting (Hack Kit). I tested (briefly) going back to the stock RUU and it seemed to work. This is my 2nd phone, as I returned the other one due to a bad ON/OFF switch. Had the same problem with the other phone.
DATA:
Root: Hack Kit.
GMaps works with GPS, Wifi. GMaps about page indicates a valid cell tower ID: 310:410:51799:249174939
RADIO:12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M
ROM: Revolution 3.5
Kernel: 2.6.32.34
I tried different ROMS (Revolution 3.2,3.3 & 3.5), RADIOS, RIL files, build.prop files / settings, and many combinations of those. AFAIK the location feature stopped working right after the gfree step in the Hack Kit. I also tried Rumball's fix, which didn't work for me.
So, can anyone test / confirm any of the following?
1. Cell Tower location works with stock AT&T RUU?
2. Cell Tower location works / does not work after rooting?
3. Any ideas!?
Appreciate it. Thanks!
Edit: I just reread that, my comment doesn't make sense. Apologies!
I can confirm that I don't get located via cell tower on my current Rom. Never paid attention before as I always leave the gps on due to being in the country and cell "triangulation" being impossible only resulting in me finding the location of the one tower close enough to connect to at the time.
Edit..just wanted to point out that WiFi location does work with gps off but not cell tower.
@silas0220 : Thanks. The antenna is working fine as I can make /receive calls and use the net as usual.
@newter55 : Thanks. The cell tower location works OK with WiFi as well.
PS,
I'm trying CM7 right now. Will post back later if it changes anything.
I can confirm that my network location does not work on my rooted Inspire also. Weird thing is I've only noticed it after installing MIUI ROM. I can't remember if I had this problem on CM7 before. The way I found out was when Yelp wouldn't let me check in because it says I'm too far from the location.

It doesn't work on CM7 either. As soon as I have the time I will unroot and go back to stock and check if it works...

GPS lock but no navigation: multiple roms

Never really managed to get GPS to work on my handset. Tried updating my agps data but still had no luck.
Figured it was from issue (was running runymeed) but have just put on virtuous beta 6 and tested it.
I get steady GPS icon (ie not flashing) and used GPS test app which reported 3 satellites.
Wondered if its issue with handset or navigation. How may lock on's does it need to determine location?
Also wondered if its its radio issue. Can anyone suggest decent one to work in UK (provider is vodaphone)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
Works fine on mine. I'm with TalkMobile, which uses Vodafone's network.
I have used Sygic, but now just use Google Maps for my navigation needs.
Baseband: 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M
Run FasterFix and set your GPS to UK pool.
Other than that make sure that you reboot the phone with GPS enabled (sometimes it has problems if you don't).
You've got an app "Faster Fix" which you can found in the Market.
This app speed up your gps, and get faster GPS-Fixes using FasterFix.
It's a good help, but you must be root.

[Q] Gps / location services

Sorry I couldn't find the exact match with my issue so I thought of creating a new thread.
I updated my Xperia Neo ROM but I'm having difficulties with GPS/LOCATON service. It works fine on a 3G network but it couldn't load my location whenever I am connected to a wifi network. I've tried using different apps on my phone but still wouldn't work. It just keeps on searching/loading.
It used to work fine before with stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM/KERNEL. Is switching back the only fix? Please help. :crying:
I have the same issue, gps location is not working for my new rom either (unoffical jellaxy cymod 10 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875015) is there a fix/patch to flash??!

GPS on wifi is now working on my NEO. I think it's my wifi connection or just my area.
A possible cause and fix

Remember that Android has 3 different location services:
Real GPS, this requires only the ability to "see" the sky where the GPS locations are flying over your head, plus up to 15 minutes to download the weekly schedule of where they are flying (the 15 minute download can be replaced by a 5 second web download, but you will still need the 1.5 to 3 minute download of latest updates). Additionally, it may waste a few extra minutes looking for the wrong satellites if it things you are in a different part of the world than you are (this depends on the rom, radio firmware and GPS chip).
Cell tower location service: This sends the number of the nearest 2G/3G/4G to an online service which looks up where that tower is, giving a rough location.
Wi-Fi access point location service: This sends the name and/or MAC address of the nearest Wi-Fi access point to a Google service, which returns where other users were last time they saw that Wi-Fi access point with GPS on and Google Maps Wi-Fi location sharing on.
From this I guess one of 2 things are wrong:
:silly:Your Wi-Fi network is not in Google's database (unlikely since it was recognized with your previous firmware).
The option to share Wi-Fi location data with Google maps is off after the update, :fingers-crossed:try turning it off, then on.
