How can we unroot without having to replace the system image?

Just an FYI to everyone, it's not root that will stop the OTA from updating on its own, it's a custom recovery. The OTA requires your phone to have the stock recovery. If you installed ClockworkMod Recovery, then you have to get back to stock using the RUU. That can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1201773
If you only acheived S-OFF with the Revolutionary tool and never installed a custom recovery, then you can go ahead and apply the OTA update and not worry about losing S-OFF. You can then load a custom recovery and gain root access by following the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16808547
I hope this helps out anyone that has questions.
And I know this process works, because I had to do it to apply the update.

Thanks. That's what I had thought. How do I backup SMS/MMS with Titanium Backup? Also, does it restore the MMS attachments?

I have now flashed the stock recovery. The OTA boots in to the stock recovery and begins installing, however it gets about halfway and then stops with a red triangle and exclamation mark displaying on the screen.

I got it to work by doing a nandroid restore back to a point before I rooted. Going to now try and restore the data.img from a more recent nandroid backup.
EDIT: The restore of data.img worked. So just to recap; I flashed back to a nandroid backup I took before I had rooted so that I had my ROM in an unrooted state. Then I flashed a stock recovery. Once I had done this, the OTA update applied without any problems. I then flashed CWM recovery and restored data.img from a recent backup. Doing this has restored all of my SMS/MMS, Apps+Data.

I ran the RUU and did the update and it worked. Then I used your method of flashing CWM recovery and restoring data.img from a recent backup. Worked like a charm! Thanks. Now just gotta do the boot animations over again.

How to remove ROOT of my phone

Hello!
At first....sorry for my english ^^
I am using my HTC Desire S now since 2 months and I'm very unhappy with it because of the bad batterie coverage of it.
Since I've rooted my phone and installed another ROM on it i can only use my phone for about 1 day.
What I am going to do now is to uninstall the ROM (has been installed by the app "ROM Manager") and ClockworkRecovery-Mod and then I will remove the root.
Is it possible to recover the original stock ROM on any way?
I did no Nandroid backup.
The phone is standard S-OFF, I will not lose it during the processes.
Can anybody help me to do this?
Thanx - Börni
Have you taken a look at this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
Find your ROM among these, run the RUU, and you will be back to stock conditions(NO root and back to S-ON).
Also, if you want you S-off back, you could use the revolutionary tool from here:

What happens if you load up the stock rom from a backup and format the phone?

Well, thanks!
Will it be back at S-OFF or on S-ON when I've finished the installaiton of this ROM?
Greetings!

After running the RUU? You should be back to stock conditions with S-ON.
You can use the revolutionary tool to gain S-OFF again.
ok, thanks for your quick replay!
I will try it out.

[Q] I want to return to the stock ROM

Hi
First of all, I have an HTC Inspire 4G and I have a friend that also have the HTC Inspire 4G. He installed a lot of ROMs in your HTC. The point is that he want to return to the stock ROM (Gingerbread 2.3.3) but he didn't backup your phone to restore them with the stock ROM. I installed some ROMs in my HTC, but before that, I realized a backup of my phone with the ROM Manager and ClockworkMod, later I restore the backup to return to the stock ROM. So my question is, can he use my backup to restore your phone with the stock ROM?
I hope that you can help me.
Thank you,

You wont lose root.

Granted, my firmware is still vulnerable and my recovery partition still has CWM on it. Advice how to install the latest official update on top of a rooted HTC Inspire 4g would be appreciated

I believe the restore wipes automatically...I could be wrong though. I haven't had to restore a rom in months.
It does. Restore formats the partitions then restores to them.
restoring stock rom without backup
Speaking of restoring through recovery, Is it possible to restore my phone to stock rom without the back up? If not, then RUU to stock 1.85 is the only way right? I installed a new rom yesterday, and I decided to wipe everything including SD so I basically erased my stock rom backup.

The best thing for you to do now is restore via the RUU to stock.
Once you have that done you can go ahead and flash other ROM's

Return to Stock

I'm sure this is discussed already but I can't seem to find it so if someone can help me or point me in the right direction.
I have a VZW GS3 that I have rooted, unlocked the boot loader and flashed CWM recovery. I then made a nandroid.
The main reason I did this was because I wanted Jelly Bean, and since Verizon is the slowest, I didn't want to wait so I installed custom ROMs.
Now that Verizon has released JB, I want to go back to my nandroid and then use the OTA firmware update service to upgrade.
Am I missing anything along the way that's essential for this to work?
Will the updated software re-root and/or relock my bootloader?
Will this automatically update the Baseband from my current VRLG7 to whatever the new one is?
One other thing, Will I still have CWM recovery after this happens? or will it revert back to stock recovery? or do I need to manually do anything to the recovery?
You're doing this to ultimately stay stock? Do you intend on flashing roms again or no? If you did a nandroid just after ONLY rooting and unlocking bootloader then restore it. Here's a step by step:
1) boot into CWM, restore your rooted, stock nandroid
2) Download EZ recovery, flash stock recovery
3) Wait for OTA
The OTA will relock your bootloader and unroot your phone. The JB OTA will also update your modem, and everything else, to VRBLK3.

No, you will lose CWM if you do what I detail above. The OTA will fail if you still have CWM installed.

For the time being I intend on remaining stock, but I still want to root. Maybe once CM10.1 becomes stable, I'll go back to it, as of now I've had too many bugs with 10 nightlys and stable and 10.1 nightlys.

Nah I was just verifying to see if you modified any system settings or apps while on ICS TW. You should be in the clear as long as you reset CWM to stock recovery if all you did was root, unlock, then perform a nandroid.

When i try and update i get the following message:

What's wrong, how do i fix that?
searched around on google and a lot of people had the same warning error, multiple solutions were offered but none of them worked.
in the end, I ended up installing from odin completely stock unrooted, locked bootloader etc 4.0.4 (as f i want to return my phone to verizon) and once i did that it automatically updated to 4.1.1

You guys need the stock recovery in order to install the OTA. It won't work with a custom recovery, it'll just boot to the custom recovery and not do anything. You can install the OTA with s off and root but you still need the stock recovery. You install the stock recovery the same way as you did the custom. Adb -> flashboot flash recovery *path of recovery*.

You can install the update, and when you have the chance you can s-off using the weaksauce/supersu/firewater method. I picked up a new M8 a couple nights ago and took the update, and afterwards did the temproot/firewater method and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.
I flashed stock recovery and tried the OTA and it failed twice. I can't seem to get it on my phone through any of the methods for some reason.
In order to install update, you need to have STOCK recovery and STOCK Rom....NOT debloated or with mods....STOCK.
Again, you need STOCK recovery using a STOCK Rom.
If you have modified the system in anyway, it WONT work until you put it back to STOCK.

No need to take ota. Ota us our enemy. Lol. The ota has been pulled an you can simply flash the firmware an that's half of the ota an then flash a stock Rom based off 1.55 or install the backup that was posted of a pure stock 1.55 Rom. After those 2 things you will have the full ota. New radios everything.. flashing a stock recovery taking ota flashing back is not needed.

Thanks guys it was annoying having that update keep popping up and no real computer to lookup info or soff. As for getting updates after roming the phone usually just wait for authors to incorporate the updates.
