Laggy HTC Sensation - General Questions and Answers

Has anyone else had a laggy sensation, was fast when I first got it. Installed apps etc and after about one month became gittery/laggy navigating around or in apps. However when testing with ANTUTU, I got a bench mark score of 4562 with stock ROM and all these apps, running the tests I got results anything from 3200 to 4200 regularly, even running one after the other.
After rooting became available I installed Virtuous Sensation v.1.0.3 with V5 Kernel patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101249, it was still laggy after installing my apps back. Using ANTUTU, I got one bench mark of 6009, which is pretty good for a sensation, most bench marks about 5600.
I installed 1.1.0 when it came out and it wasn’t much better, bench marks right back to stock between 3200 to 4200.
When testing using Quadrant, my results are at just under 2000, not a whole lot better than the Nexus One 2.2+ which is pathetic, my HTC Desire overclocked to 1.2Ghz on 2.3.4 gets bench marks of around 1700 with a single processor.
It is almost like the 2nd asynchronous CPU is not kicking in?
I must say now with 1.1.2 the lag has all but disappeared but the bench marks are still pretty low I would think.
Run another test without any apps installed except the default install and bench mark tools and the results have been the same.
Has anyone got some tips, or am I doing something wrong?

try moving all of your apps to the sd card and clear cache using cachemate

Android benchmarking is a pretty hit-and-miss affair, and is shockingly over-rated.
As long as you got it smooth for everyday use, 'good' benches are irrelevant for everything but ePeen

Agreed! Take the bench for what it is...day to day device performance should be the deciding factor

Thanks so much everyone for your responses, yes I understand bench mark is hit and miss, but it was the only way I could get some form of validation.
The problem was that it was getting laggy for everyday use, which is why I tried the other things to try to understand the issue better.

I would do what sweensour says. its the most sensible solution. sounds like you packing the 800 megs with apps. use the external for that. also make sure to copy any back ups to your computer and remove them from your device. back ups take a lot of room

So after reading nearly 5 hours and spending my time in the wee hours of morning, I finally did all the "stable" mods for the phone... If you haven't been reading, make sure you guys check out the stuff in the development forum.
After all modifications, I was able to get 2701 points in quadrant benchmark. What mods did I do?
-i9000 eclair flash (JM5)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734871
-Alternative mimocans lag fix
(one click installer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749495)
-One click root (googled it for i9000)
-Overclock kernel 1.0Ghz to 1.2Ghz
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746343)
This stuff really does help out your phone folks. Bench it now with quadrant, then take a peak at the other stuff and make magic happen. If anyone needs any additional help setting up their captivate, I'm more than happy to help.
I agree those fixes help speed a lot. But the quadrant score is meaningless. the speed hack creates an io loopback. The loopback just tells quadrant what it wants to hear.
Does your BT work on the european ROM. For me all people hear is a gargeled mess on there end?

I keep hearing about this quadrant, does it actually improve real world performance? Or is just for the sake of scores?

Quadrant is just benchmarking software that takes the cpu, gpu and memory read/write speeds into account. It runs a series of tests and spits a score number out at the end, so you can compare your device to others (like comparing boner sizes, but less gay).
It doesn't actually do anything to speed up the device though.

This is correct and to be honest there is way to much weight in the I/O tests. That is the only reason that the stock Droid X bests the Gal X. It has more weight than cpu and gpu so you can't put to much into those scores. They really don't mean anything more than bragging rights. What I am interested in is real world usage.
Real world use with the hack provides amazing speed gains opening and switching apps. Io heavy apps are very much improved while open too. It's finally as fast as the iphone.
Whats your battery life like after the overclock?
The score ended up getting lower and lower every time i used quadrant. 2701 is the highest I was able to get so far, but that's with a fresh install of the rom and all the stuff before I started loading on apps. Everytime I ran the benchmark, I of course killed the apps beforehand.
The battery life is the same- to be honest. This is me comparing a rooted stock ROM to the somewhat fresh install of the eclair i9000. The phone is very snappy. I came from an iPhone 4 and one of the biggest eye sores to me was the less-fluidness of changing programs, response to buttons (homescreen-back button) and pinch to zoom. After all these changes, it's a whole different story. Browsing is very appealing, especially since pinch to zoom isn't jagged or slow. The smoothness of this functionality is on par to an iPhone. And there is no waiting when I press the home button or back button.
True, maybe these numbers aren't considerably accurate (as far as the lag fix and EXT2) but at least it shows raw computing capability in it's current state... meaning, the usage of a virtual EXT2. Never the less, the phone is still all around faster, even if it isn't exactly the proper way of going about it.
The only problem I've seen so far is that it likes to randomly shut off. Won't respond to anything unless if I soft reset it. I haven't really found what causes it, since the consistency of it happening goes about in a non set pattern.
I didn't see any real world increase .. so I reverted back in about 4 hours.... I'd rather have the memory than a number that don't transfer to real world speeds...

Degraded 3D Performance with Froyo/Cog 2.2?

Hey everyone,
I was running Quadrant after flashing Cog 2.2/Froyo with OCLF. Everything seems to go faster but the 2D and 3D performance - I can definitely tell that the framerate is lower in those two tests than before. Am I crazy?...

I noticed that framerates were lower as well, but only about 4 or 5 FPS. A drop this small isn't really all that significant, and 3D performance at 40 FPS rather than 44 FPS is still much better than a phone like the EVO which runs at like 18 FPS, so I wouldn't really worry that much
Yeah, I noticed it too. I'm also noticing other slowdowns, like a lag on the app drawer screen between my finger swipes and corresponding animations on the screen. If I swipe left or right, the actual swiping animation happens a split second later (noticeable lag). Something tells me this isn't the release build of this rom.
I'm also noticing that the battery dies much quicker with this new rom. I'd get about 2 days of use out of JH7 with the amount I use the phone, with JI6 I'm lucky if I get 8-10 hours.
Actually the benchmark result is quite amazing id say
It scores 1900+ in quadrant standarf

Use Neocore, that is a better FPS than quadrant. I still get 55.5/6 with Neocore so 3d performance is not degraded, at least not on my phone.
I'd expect some continued optimization of Froyo 2.2. Remember how laggy JF6 was? Then it got way better with JH2/3/7. I expect progress like that with the Froyo builds as well. With OCLF, JI6 is actually fairly impressive speed wise.

Hmm.. did you do anything after you flashed, like cleared dalvik cache and whatnot? Mine is actually running slower (UI-wise) than JF6
Its funny you posted this because I noticed it as well today when I ran Quadrant just to see what it would get. I think Quadrant is a horrible tool for benchmarking now since it can be so easily manipulated, but I did notice the FPS drop myself.
Gles 2/1 is perfectly fine, i scored 46fps on nenamark, so no need to worry about 3d performance, i do admit 2d does stutter a little tho.

Take the man's advice! Quadrant is an awful way to measure performance on the Captivate. Quadrant is biased towards Snapdragon processors, and isn't all that accurate.

dg, may as well save your breath. No matter what is said or done, there will always be people who complain that X is slower than when it was Y and be sure that they are right (and will argue they are right to their dying breath).
Synthetic benchmarks are b***it on a multitasking OS anyway, at any given time any thread can tie up a resource the synthetic benchmark needs or it may not. The only way you could truly benchmark something like this while still allowing multitasking would be with a long range sample like a few hours, the 30 -70 seconds Quadrant runs is a worthless snapshot in time.
They all think they are getting an answer but all they are really doing is using a magnifying glass on a Seurat and wondering why they don't get the big picture. Of course the performance issue couldn't be one of the apps they have installed or that has updated since the last time they benchmarked.
I have 206 apps installed on my captivate with even a ridiculous amount like that and more stuff than the average running I can still get a quadrant score of over 950, its a snapshot in the middle not an effective way to judge a film.
For everyone whinging about reduced "3D" performance, is the actual handset slower in real, day to day use?
This is stock 2.1 Firmware vs stock 2.2 Firmware.
Not Cognition/custom rom with lagfix vs Stock 2.2.
As much as I don't like benchmarks, in this they are only confirming the slow downs I'm seeing in real world use on the leaked froyo rom. (Not cognition)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The first time I flashed 2.2 I saw some lag in the form of occasional black screens and delayed responses, even after installing OCLF.
I used Odin One-Click to flash back to JF6 and did a master clear before installing Cognition 2.2. Immediately applied OCLF before doing anything else. Not seeing the black screens and delayed responses this time. Some are suggesting it's the master clear that helps.
As for 3D performance, animations and scrolling between homescreens are a lot smoother than they were in 2.1. Games run awesome too. The only two places I notice some skippyness are in the app drawer (not often though, and very minor) and in the browser (this is due to a known memory leak bug).

I have never experienced that on 2.2, even before applying a lag fix. I suggest One-Clicking back to JF6, doing a master clear, and then installing 2.2 again.
No drop vs stock, the overclock kernel gave the extra fps. it also overclocked the gpu by 11%. 4-5 fps out of 40-45 is right in that area.
Edit :.i did a master clear so maybe that's why I don't see a problem
Not all benchmarks will work because our phones are capped at 56 fps. A benchmark needs to bog the gpu down below that for the whole test to get an accurate measurement. Quadrant does that for only party of the test. Many benchmarks can't do that at all.
Quadrant is a decent bench mark but our phones will not see the score increase of a snapdragon with froyo. linpack shows greatly inflated scores on snapdragon froyo devices. Greene computing goes over this on there website.
http://www.greenecomputing.com/
the full version of quadrant shows that the hummingbird and the processor in the droid 2/x mop the floor with the snapdragon in all areas but processing speed. The hummingbird having an edge over the droid x particularly in the 3d area but losing overall because of the rfs file system lag Which is apparently is weighed heavily and the reason the lagfix blows the score out of proportion and the different lagfixes have big gaps in the score while real world performance is not even noticeable.
http://slideme.org/application/quadrant-advanced
Composite scores don't mean anything and that is my gripe with quadrant, there is no way to decide how to weigh file system benchmarks against processor benchmarks against 3d, each area must be compared separately, and the user should be able to decide what that means.
Edit: linpack shows a huge increase over stock. 13.77 vs the 9.61 I got with voodoo and overclock. But still not at the level of a snapdragon. Wait till the next generating of arm processors come out, if you think a snapdragon/hummingbird hybrid would be awesome that's nothing compared to what's in the works. Higher clock speeds and multi-core cpu's aren't far away.

Is 1.5Ghz too high?

I have my Sensation set to 1.5Ghz and it works perfectly. The only thing is that it's getting a little hot (which is expected btw). It's currently fixed at 42C. 1.5Ghz is great but is it really that necessary? Should I just OC it to 1.3Ghz? I'm trying to find a nice temp base.

To answer your question, each device will have a differing operational ceiling depending on the quality of the SoC, soldering, silk-screening etc. They aren't all created equal. If 1.5GHz works fine for you, stick with it I see OC kernels pushing to 1.8GHz now.
Naturally the higher you go the hotter your SoC will run, so I'd play around and find the point where you gain some performance, but negligible heat over stock. Heat will kill not only your SoC, but your battery as well.
I'm only going from personal experience, but I've never found an OC to be worth it in terms of an actual, real-life performance increase, on any device. It looks good in benchmarks, but I'd rather have a phone that was smooth as butter in day-to-day operation than a jerky piece of sh*t that gets 10,000 in Quadrant YMMV of course!
The heat stress and battery drainage costs, plus stability issues, outweigh the positives for me.
How can I reset my CPU back to stock then?

Most of the Sensation ROMs feature what's called an OC Daemon.
This is pretty much an automatic overclocker of sorts. It can change your clock ceiling/floor automatically depending on load. Read a bit more about it here.
If you have something like SetCPU installed, the Daemon is redundant, giving you manual control over your clocks. The easiest way to return to 'stock' frequencies would be to simply delete SetCPU and allow the Daemon to do it's thing
Well I uninstalled it and I have LeeDroid. How do I find this "daemon"? Where would it be located? What do I do I'm a noob

I couldn't see whether the daemon in included on LeeDroid, or whether LeeDroid has actually just modified the frequency tables (list of supported frequencies) to allow for the ~1730MHz ceiling. If the daemon is there, it'll already be working for you - you don't see it
I don't believe it's something you can just download and tack on. I think you'd have to be running a supported ROM. You may need to dig a little deeper into the LeeDroid thread and do some reading, or perhaps retitle this thread to ask 'Does LeeDroid include the OC Daemon' or something similar.
Sorry I can't be more help, I'm a devout Android Revolution HD supporter myself, although I am running the UNITY kernel.
Good luck mate!
personally I can't see the need to over clock, given that all software is probably written for devices currently in use, I do not know of any dual core 1.5 or higher phones, so why oc ?
I agree , I would rather have a fast stable phone, than some jerky fc piece of ****e that gets 10000 jiggawatts in a benchmark, and that can cook my crumpets..................... on second thoughts, I do like my crumpets.

[Q] Performance

I'm finally receiving my MyTouch 4G Slide today. I was just curious how the performance is? Is the stock ROM worth wild? Does anybody play N64oid, or PSoid on there phone? If so, how's the performance? Also a personal stand point whats your favorite ROM?
I want to try out the Port of CM7, but Sense 3.0 is pretty neat. If anyboyd is running a Sense 3.0 Rom, or CM7 would they recommend it?
cm7 > sense
The Sense that the MT4GS is vastly superior to previous versions of Sense, but I'm still waiting for a viable release candidate of CM to come out.
Your battery drains pretty fast with 3d games, and if you charge while you play, your phone gets hot as hell, I recommend rooting so that you can keep it underclocked as much as possible while you play. Gaming performance is good enough that you don't need full cpu power
Sent from my Senseless Doubleshot using XDA App
...as I sit here in my car waiting for my shift to start, i'm playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on Fpse. You can find it in the google market, and if you have any old ps1 games laying around it's worth every penny.
Works great, when i'm at home I plug the phone into my t.v. and play it that way. If anything I think it runs more smoothly when plugged into the t.v. - the audio syncs just a bit better with the same settings.
Checked my email and figured i'd cruise through here real quick before they let me in to get started.
Haven't had a chance to play with n64oid, I don't have any n64 games around anymore so I passed that one by.
About the stock ROM:
Horribly bloated, full of crap, loggers and other BS...you can find the info in a few threads around here.
If you decide to stick with the stock ROM, freeze, uninstall or kill the zipwhipgroups apk and also flash Undeadk9's security patch. Those two actions should close all known security flaws to date.
I've played with all the ROMs available, and they all offer something fun approaching the phone from different angles.
Play with them and i'm sure you'll find something (honestly...anything) better then the stock ROM.
My daily-driver keeps ending up being my own frankenstein, and once i'm basically out of a job when december hits i'm looking forward to mostly finishing it off.
Performance-wise the phone is fantastic. Even on the bloated bogged down stock ROM it still flies, and once you start flashing some of the more optimized ideas people have shared with us, you'll be even more impressed with it.
Make sure you hit up the battery thread floating around here to see why you should switch away from the stock HTC battery. I use an anker battery, and couldn't be happier - but you should see what siani_8 has to say about the Mugen batteries. Pricey, but apparently worth it. I found my anker battery for just a few bucks on amazon.
The stupid stock battery gets ( to quote another members apt description ) "Stupidly hot". Heat is death for a device like this, and whether you go with a mugen or anker, you should switch for sure if you're going to get into gaming or pushing the devices limits...otherwise you'll burn it up.
Just make sure to cruise through my backup thread, link in my sig, before you go flash happy. It'll probably make life easier for you in the long run, and it's a good review even if you're already familiar with it's contents.
Always happy to see new faces around, and you'll love the device. Best of luck!
Thank you all I read a lot about the battery issue. Considering getting one, but I might just run at 800mhz. I'm coming from a G1, and iPhone 3G. This thing fly's! But I'm having another issue, I can't root. Everything is set up right. But Rev. hangs on Zerging Root?? Or is it supposed to do that? I haven't rooted in a good 3 years. Any help is good help ;D
Also all the Emulators work, even the super buggy NDS one. I kept all my older games so I have the "Legal backup". But the games that needed the expansion pac run slow with sound on. But there on http://slideme.org/ if anybody want's them.
I'm a bit lost on performance with the MT4GS. In all my testing so far I have been getting my best benchmark score with stock rom and stock kernel without overclocking. I've tested with multpile benchmark apps and consistantly get lower scores using custom roms and kernels even while overclocked up to 1.7 Ghz. The whole thing has me baffled at this point. Using quadrant advanced I average 2100 range with all stock, compared to 1800 average using custom and overclocking. To add to my confusion, my original mytouch 4G with single core is averaging 2800 in quadrant while only overclocked to 1.1 Ghz.
I must be doing something wrong, by all rights the slide should be scoring much much higher.
Does anyone have any ideas why I'm getting my bizarre results?
Thanks much everyone.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk
Usually benchmark scores that are lower are better.
Not always, but in most cases this is true.
Quadrant didn't support dual-core processors, or well, or something if I remember right. I mostly ignored it when I was benchmarking things not long ago - wasn't working right on our phone.
Say what you like about Sense, I'm not a fan of proprietary junk either, but they have the camera right on this one. There's zero shutter lag, and the camera has the features and response of a mid priced point & shoot. It's one of the best cameras in any phone, and would sell for a nice price even if there were no phone attached. And that is largely because of the Sense framework on the back end.
Because of that, I highly recommend UndeadK9's Senseless ROM. This ROM is an AOSP themed ROM but he has kept the Sense framework on the back end, but only where it benefits us. He is very sensitive to issues with the ROM and responds to (i.e. usually fixes) them very quickly. And he posts on here as if he doesn't have a life.
If you use his ROM tip the man, he deserves it.
With quadrant i was getting better scores from my mytouch 4G, but if it is only using one core then the odd results make much more sense.
One thing that has had me confused is with custom roms and kernels on the slide, when I run benchmarks, my scores are about the same regardless of being overclocked or running stock.
Based on the scores, it looks like overclocking is having no effect. I can say that there are definitely performance increases with the slider regardless of what the benchmarks say.
I did try UndeadK9's new rubix rom, so far I'm very impressed.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk
Imo there is nothing wrong with the stock rom. It has very few bugs and my phone scores 4650 on antutu. I was one of the first people to get the phone, online pre, and I got the anker battery. The new security update from tmo also gave me better 4g signal. I have only three gripes with the phone.
1. It doesn't run at 1.5ghz which it is fully capable of
2. You can't name homescreen folders
3. There is no true favorites
If you want the phone just to run cm7 vanilla don't buy the phone and get a newer gx2

Why do you care about benchmarks in the first place......
Putting your phone in the fridge, then getting an AMAZING score...does it make your day? Does showing it off make you happy? It's not what the phone is primarily designed for....it has much more useful functions, you know like internet, email, calling, gaming, photos...
More importantly...imagine benchmarks didn't exist for a moment. Did your phone actually feel slow before you did all these 'tests'??? Did you need to get 30k before you felt happy? Does a 'lower score' completely ruin the actual day to day user experience...

No, just because other people get highers 'scores' does not mean there is something wrong with your phone.
Before you started running 'tests', were you experiencing any actual issues?
It's getting hot more than others. So that's not like it should be.I hope you understood why i'm trying to fix it and sorry if my english isn't understandable.

If it's getting hot, is this because you're running unnecessary benchmarks...
Or any other activities which are causing it to get hot? This could be an app or hardware issue, both nothing to do with your benchmark. Are you comparing actual temperatures in degrees to identical phones doing exactly the same activities side by side, or does it just feel a bit warmer?
What I'm trying to say is your obsession with the score is causing you unnecessary stress...you are trying to fix something which does not need fixing.
So go back to the original thinking:
- Imagine scores don't exist
- Did the phone actually feel slow in day to day normal usage before you started running benchmarks?
Or:
- Stop running tests, forget about them
- Use the phone normally
- Enjoy using the phone again

Yes do you, that's why you opened the thread..
The post sounds aggressive, but it's really trying to change the way you think about scores in the first place..

The first time run it i just wanted to see how my phone is powerful because i felt a little lag on asphalt 8 yesterday, so yes i wasn't expecting any issues but when i saw i got 17k i think that difference is just huge. I don't care if my device is same at gaming, multitasking with other nexus devices but benchmark makes me think it's not right.
In normal usage; yeah it is fast But I'm not sure my device is how it's supposed to be like this. But if you say it's normal and benchmark's not meaning anything i won't care. But there should be a reason all devices got different scores.

So it is sort of only the benchmark which is making you think something is not right
You don't need a score to see how powerful your phone is. It will breeze through most tasks just fine. "A little lag" on a graphically intense game is to be expected sometimes.
Gaming -> High CPU load -> heat -> thermal throttle -> bit of lag
Laws of physics
In normal usage; yeah it is fast

This is the only real 'benchmark' which is actually important in normal day to day usage.
But I'm not sure my device is how it's supposed to be like this. But if you say it's normal and benchmark's not meaning anything i won't care. But there should be a reason all devices got different scores.

Yes there is a reason we all get different scores, the same reason we all get different battery life. There are many variables, not least temperature and thermal throttling.
We have different number of apps installed and running at any one time, things syncing, mods, scripts, ROMs, kernels, all different. No two CPUs and Nexus 5s are exactly identical either. So therefore you get different 'scores'. Even if you had two stock factory reset phones side by side running the same test, they'll get different scores.
And just because your score is lower, it doesnt necessarily mean that something is wrong, or that your phone is always slow. It is just a nominal number from an app at a particular point in time. It still feels fast, and is fast...

It doesn't make any sense

Okey, i trust you. Since i just bought phone and didn't test it much really i won't test it or try to improve it for now.
The way a phone works doesn't lend itself well to benchmarks. That's why manufacturers like Samsung have traditionally "cheated" on benchmarks by ensuring maximum clock speeds are used when they detect a bench marking application.
If you want to maximize your benchmark scores you simply need to disable thermal throttling (or increase its limit) and also use optimized Dalvik copied from another device.

This. Thermal throttle is a way to keep your phone regulated into normal temperatures specified by the device manufacturer. However, it's generally safe to raise it a bit, mine is set to 85.
aw man, its too bad i wasnt around earlier
