Hello. I fount, that I can serve the media content from android phone through Twonky server to my PC. But I want retrograde app - the android DNLA media CLIENT - to play the streamed video or audio on my Android phone - from my PC media library.
Any idea?

I don't know much about Android...
...but I'm interested in getting an android phone, probably the HTC Desire.
Can't you just link your phone into your home network, like I've done with my WM6.5 phone? That way, you can just browse to the relevant media folder on your network from your phone and play the file via the relevant app on your phone. I do that for video and music on my WM phone.
Or does Android not allow you to link into a PC network?
Linking to a PC network over SMB/CIFS is not straightforward AFAIK:
You can browse and copy files with applications such as ES File Explorer, but that is not integrated into the file system for all applications. And You can use xyflash to stream from the network using certain protocols such as http and ftp, but not in a very user friendly way.
I'd love to see something being able to browse and stream using DNLA/UPNP or mount a SMB path in the android file system, but I haven't seen it yet. Though the latter may be possible if you device is rooted, I haven't checked that out...
Are you looking for something like AndroMote, or to go the other way around?

Just saw this post; I've been using this for a while (originally just to test it) it works well with my Buffalo Linkstation's Media server.
As I can see, there is no news about video dnla app client - only audio is possible now :/

Not necessarily.... If you have a UPnP server on your PC (TVersity, Playon, etc...) you can use PlugPlayer (plugplayer . com) as your client...
I've spent some time recently to look for a UPnP stack solution for android, so perhaps my exploration can be of use.
I found out that EyeconTroller is a nice media renderer. I only tested audio but EyeconTroller is supposed to handle videos as well.
I've tested it with two android devices: the first one runs iMediashare (media server), the second one runs EML UPnP-AV Controlpoint to act as a remote controller, and EyeconTroller runs on both devices. Using EML I was able to stream from iMediashare to EyeconTroller on both devices.
Next step is to stream from my linux box, but i don't expect any issue here (granted it is on the same subnet, which it is not for now), considering that EML discovered the iMediashare and all EyeconTroller instances without problem.
Note that for now EyeconTroller is free but might not always be (see eyecontec site).
I have a lcd tv samsung C550, they have dlna with name 'allshare', they can display music, photos and messages, but I think this only work with galaxy S, would be nice if any android phone can send text message to tv.

i search for a audio only dlna client, they are all audio and video and i just want a small case to plug to my audio mixer.. without any drive i wan't to stream music directly from my phone as i can do on my tv with any NAS and skifta.

AFAIK, there's currently no way to do a raw audio stream from Android over the network; and I can almost guarantee you it won't be possible at all without root. Closest you could get would be getting a Bluetooth audio sink (like this or the official Nexus home dock) and hooking that to your hifi. There are apps to stream local content via DLNA, but there isn't anything to stream arbitrary audio in Android.
EDIT: Some PC Bluetooth stacks may also be able to receive A2DP audio as well, but it's not a universal feature.
Check out mecanto, it's an app that syncs your music to the cloud and then you can stream it from the cloud and play on your phone.

I'm amazed that there's no interest in this. I'm sure I haven't searched enough and so probably should pick on a more current thread. But it seems a no-brainer to me to want to go this direction. Everyone discusses streaming from PC to phone. Why would I do that instead of just listening to the PC? Now if I could stream from phone to PC... I have many phone apps that let me listen to unlimited tunes and radios from all over the world, which of course I use outside the house. But using it in this way in the house, my phone would not only be the source, but the "remote" -- the controller. Walk around the house w/ just the phone. Beats my carrying my Squeezebox "portable" radio, as I do. Or maybe I need to pay $150 for the Squeezebox solution, their remote controller... Just don' get it.
yes. i also think this is a great idea. there a heaps of pc to android threads.
usage scenario i am thinking.
walking around with device. the device contains song files and player. if that player had a button like stream to ie desktop, home theatre speakers, etc etc. that would be great. sorta like wmp 12 stream to button if anyone is familiar with that. bluetooth has the restriction of range so ideally wifi would be the better solution. curious to know if anyone has come across any updates to this.
I use 2 apps because im undecided which is best firt one is called 2play dnla
and the other is upnp. search in the market for both :-D

Theres an app called Twonky which acts as media server on your Android. It lets you stream upnp to whatever device you have capable such as Apple TV, Playstation etc. I have an AC Ryan Playon HD player which is hooked to my local network and I am able to recieve and play media through this to my HD TV from my Desire over wifi.
Any suggestions on the following then:

Im currently using PS3 media server for the PS3 and StreamToMe for sending to my iphones/ipads. They both work excellent. Was also amazed with the lack of streaming programs.
A simple solution that worked for me from a windows pc to android was was using ES File Explorer (free), choose LAN from dropdown (top left), add new server, scan - it should then pick up your shared network.
Then navigate to your chosen movie, play with moboplayer. Voila.
If it doesn't play straight away make sure moboplayer is set to soft decoder.
Sometimes you may have to press and hold your movie icon, open as video, choose moboplayer.

I think MyPhoneExplorer can do that (not sure)
For youtube videos: the youtube app can link with your pc through Youtube leanback
There is an app called "Remote Droid Player"(play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.newandroid). Though it needs a small application needs to be installed on PC.

Still no way to stream every sound that your android device plays to your PC? Is it not technically possible to create and android server that sends a raw stream of sound to the PC over wifi?
All the solutions linked in this thread requires you to actively choose what mp3 to listen to. I want to stream notifications/spotify/radio/everything that is played.
Hi. New to XDA! Lurking for some time, but registered to tell you this. Crawled through all other MediaLink posts, but none were relevant, or had any answers/tips for further exploration. Well. This also has nothing to do with any phones, for now. Only htc media link hd, a pc, and a tv.
I'm really starting to see the potential of the Media Link HD.
First and foremost, it allows HTC One devices, and other phones, as well, (gsIII, pureview 808, google it to connect to the tv with a simple gesture to mirror or stream content.
What I am starting to discover is, it is possible to connect your PC to the tv with the Media Link as well. (My TV has no internet connection or DLNA natively, so the Media Link is all i have to help me share to my TV.) Pictures, videos and music can ie. be sent to the tv via Windows' "Play To"-function, where Windows Media Player uses the device to stream content. So the Media Link works as a generic DLNA DMR, Digital Media Receiver (i think). Try it out!
I was just wondering if you guys have had other experiences, or knew any other programs that can take advantage of the Media Link, preferrably using a browser to stream online web content, or maybe stream the whole desktop? I'm not buying another receiver or the like, now that I have the Media Link.
I've tried Twonky, and it works with MLHD! - but they have a certain 'media library' you can choose from, not use it everywhere on the web. They have an extension for IE that will let you share to your tv. They had a firefox extension, but sadly that doesn't work anymore. Imma try out XBMC and Serviio (Tried a bunch of other programs, Tversity, tvmobili, plex, mezzmo, mediatomb, universal media server, couldn't get it to work), but as i try stuff out I can update this thread with more results if you want.
Let me know what you guys have found out! And just ask me if i have missed something, and you don't understand anything of what i say..

Alright, so after having tried about 20+ programs, I've found something that works well so far!
J.River Media center works as a digital media controller right now on the computer - it sees the Media Link HD and lists it. Now I have to figure out the program, because it's filled with features, and it's very overwhelming. Anyway, I'm watching Youtube videos from the web on Windows, through JRiver, then through Media Link, to the tv - wirelessly! Talk about having a cheap wireless setup
I'll post here again if i find something more simple and easy to use.
But for now, using PlayTo for local files, and JRiver for (some) online content (though it also plays local files) is good enough for me.
As before, feel free to buy in with suggestions if you know anything.
Now, at least i know what DLNA types there are.
DMS - server - hosts content.
DMC - controller - finds content on DMS and sends it to a DMR or a DMP.
DMR - renderer - receives content, but is not able to browse content on DMS (i think)
DMP - player - receives content, and is able to browse the DMS.
So far so good. Again, ask me if anything seems odd here..
I just go my hands on a Rikomagic MKIII, and I'm looking to set up some sort of media server on my pc so I can stream all my videos on my tv easily. I've googled and tried a lot of solutions, since they're not in the same LAN the easiest one didn't really work for me (shared folder), so I started with an FTP-server on my PC, connecting to it in ES File Explorer and streaming the videos one by one. It was a working solution, but not really a good one. So I searched some more, found out about XBMC and Serviio. I have XBMC on my PC now, but I can't figure out how to share the files properly, if that's even possible, and the XBMC-app doesn't seem to work so I've put that idea on ice for now. Then I tried Serviio, set everything up, downloaded an app on the Rikomagic and that worked great, for 15 days, after which the server software requires a 25USD purchase.
My question then is, are there any better solutions for my problem? Serviio was the best one I've tried, but I'd prefer a free feature tbh, I'd rather not pay 25USD for a program that doesn't actually support Android, since the player-apps are fan-made.. I'm sure you realize what I'm looking for, just a solution where I can use my PC as a media server and play it on my android with ease. Doesn't have to be pretty, but I'd prefer if I could make a playlist on the android device (couldn't figure that out with the FTP server and MX player).
I have been trying to get this feature to work for a while now, Microsoft has been no help because all of the tutorials involve using media player on desktop win8. The option comes up when you select a music file in windows explorer under the Play tab in the ribbon. It is supposed to allow you to stream to dlna devices or other computers on your network. I have the proper media sharing options enabled on both my win8pro laptop and the surface, but I can not get it to ungrey going either way (play from laptop to surface or surface to laptop). The normal tutorials involve creating a playlist in media player then using the play to option in it, which is still grayed out on my laptop. The surface can see the laptop over the network, and the laptop can see the surface as well.
Later I am going to try turning on the server option in services on the surface and see if that works
Anyone else gotten this to work? It just seems like such a great idea, have your laptop plugged into the stereo and then play stuff to it remotely from your surface. I wish that Microsoft had implemented this as robustly as the play to Xbox option because I don't want to buy an Xbox just to stream music while I have other computers that could do that just as easily.

I've never actually heard of the functionality like you describe - PlayTo is intended for devices (i.e. "not computers" where a Windows RT tablet is a computer, but an Xbox 360 is a device). There are (much) cheaper DLNA receivers than Xbxoes, incidentally.
I use the play to now and again, I stream video files to my DLNA TV. Though I tend to prefer to use my laptop for this due to its support for mp4/mkv files. Just ensure the device ur streaming to comes up in the devices part of the metro settings, and as mentioned, ensure your firewall isn't blocking it.

Unfortunately, it has to be a Microsoft-certified DLNA receiver for Metro apps to be able to share to it. There are a bunch of those, but it's not quite as easy as just getting a DLNA receiver. You can use Play To to a non-certified receiver from the desktop though.
For the original poster, to be able to Play To a laptop, you need to enable an option in Windows Media Player and have that open. The option is "Allow Remote Control of my player" under the Stream menu (in WMP12 at least).
@jhoff80: Cool, thanks for the tip, didn't know about that feature!
@Doggydude: Be aware that Windows RT doesn't include Media Player, so it may be unable to receive DLNA. The other direction should, in theory, work after enabling it as jhoff80 suggested.
Thanks for your input guys, I will continue to work on native play to, but courtesy of a pm from neoncell who doesn't have full permissions yet there is an app called play to receiver in the store that should do what I want fairly well.

@gooddaytodie I might look into a receiver, but I'd rather just use existing hardware. My stereo and tv are too old to have even basic internet support. I wish that Microsoft had implemented other device options other than just an Xbox for native media streaming in their music and video apps.
My Samsung TV is not Microsoft certified. Does that mean I need this Play To app/program to stream video from my tablet to my tv? How do I get it?

That means you have to do it from the desktop. Right click (tap-and-hold) on the MP3 audio file or MP4 video file that you want to play to your TV, and it should give you the option to Play To, with a callout menu that lists your TV. That will give you a small set of controls to play the video or audio file, with playlist functionality there as well. (Looks like they just pulled the necessary parts from WMP).

I highly doubt it, you need an app that has the ability to stream.
Microsofts media apps for win8 have xbox streaming built in

HTML5 video is supposed to work that way, but I've never tried it myself.
