Bloatware removal - HTC Sensation

All I'm trying to do is get rid of bloatware on my phone, no custom roms or S-off. Never done anything like this before.
I went here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161283 and here is what I did.
1. Plugged in phone via USB to computer and made sure HTC sync was off, was in charge only mode and enabled USB debugging.
2. Downloaded titanium backup from the Market.
3. Downloaded the .zip for the Sensation 4G and extracted it to a folder located on my desktop.
4. Ran "Run_ME_fre3vo_Root.bat" from that folder. A command prompt popped up and said C:\.......\adb wait-for-device
5. Opened Titanium backup on my phone and it says, "Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will not work.
I assumed following the directions on the link provided would temporarily root my phone, allowing me to get rid of the bloatware.
What am I missing?

s off with revolution, Root ur phone download rootexplorer go to system/app and delete what u don't want.

^ My man doesn't want to S-OFF
OP, make sure you are on usb debegging mode. ADB can't find your phone otherwsie I believe. To do that go to settings > applications > development and make sure usb debugging is checked. Then try to run the fre3vo tool again and launch titanium.

If you want to remove stuff, you'll need S-OFF. I think with TB you only freeze programs, and hides them from app drawer.

That's all I really wanna do, I just don't want them to show up and/or run in the background all the time.

Freezing doesn't just hide them from the app drawer. Freezing stops the apps from ever launching. If you want to remain s-on then freezing is the way to go.

So what am I missing in order to do that? Is there something else I need to do to my phone in order to Temp-Root it?

What does that mean?
Anyways, to temp root, follow one of the guides for temp-rooting. Then, use Titanium Backup (via marketplace) to freeze the apps. Its simple, effective, and relatively worry free.
Youll need to see the sticky guide to installing ADB and the HTC drivers on your computer as well.
I am an advocate for using S-OFF responsibly. Most people here are very reckless with it, and a few are on their way to bricked phones (some are there, now).

Thanks for the help, btw. So I followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152148 and got all that done.
I then followed this again http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161283
When i click the Run_ME_fr3vo_ROOT it brings up the cmd prompt window and scrolls through a bunch of text then gets to the end and asks me to press any key to continue. So it seems to have loaded everything it needs to. Then, I go into TB and it says my phone isn't rooted. Is there a step I'm missing?

In the script, did it say "exploit complete"? Did it say, "superuser installed"? If it did, try reloading TB. Mine used to do that if I had opened it before rooting.

How to un-AT&Tify the Samsung Captivate

I hope this how to guide is helpful. Yes it is not all about the AT&T crap, it also removes the horrible touchwiz launcher.
NOTE THERE IS A MUCH MORE DETAILED GUIDE HERE
1. Install a launcher substitute.
Personally, I prefer launcher pro, so that is the one I will be talking about in this step. You can pick this app up for free from the android market.
This launcher completely replaces your home screens and your application drawer with something more stock android like. It has several improvements over the actual stock android launcher also, so I would recommend it for any phone, not just TouchWiz phones.
CAUTION FROM THIS POINT ON YOU THINGS COULD (although unlikely) GO WRONG. PROCEED WITH CAUTION. I AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED IN ANY PART OF THIS TUTORIAL.
2. Root your phone
Note that this does void your warrenty and prevent returning of your phone. All that aside it is relatively easy.
2a. Download the following root update at: mediafire.com/download.php?eilzbhfl73rij1v
2b. DO NOT UNZIP THIS FILE. Instead, rename it update.zip
2c. Mount your phones internal storage to you computer. If you are on a mac, that may require enable debugging mode in the application settings menu. If you are on a PC it requires the Samsung Captivate drivers forum.xdadevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
2d. Copy the drivers to your phones internal storage and unmount and unplug your phone.
2e. Turn your phone off.
2f. Turn your phone on by pressing volume up and down while pressing the power button.
2g. Use volume up and down to select reinstall packages and then press the power button. Allow it to update.
2h. Once you reboot, your phone should be rooted.
3. Uninstall the bloatware.
3a.Download Titanium Backup from the Market
3b. Make sure your sd card is mounted to your phone (not your PC)
3c. Once it is installed install the busybox version they prompt you to.
3d. Press the Backup/Restore tab (if not already pressed).
3e. Find any of the following applications that you want to delete. If you don't know what it is, I recommend not deleting it. There are other bloatware apps, but I recommend keeping them.:
At&t Navigator
At&t Radio
At&t Maps
At&t Music
At&t Mobile Hotspots
Mobile Banking
Mobile Video
Where
YPmobile
At&t FamilyMap
Mini Diary
MobiTV
Write and Go
Media Hub
Daily Breifing
3f. Click on the app and press the red un-install button. NOTE UNINSTALL WILL REMAIN THROUGH FACTORY RESET ONLY UNINSTALL IF YOU ARE SURE YOU WANT TO.
4. Sideloading Apps
4a. If you are on a PC download this androidcentral.com/sideload-android-apps-all-you-want-sideload-wonder-machine
4b. If you are on a Mac (me) or Linux download this androidcentral.com/android-central-sideload-wonder-machine-linux-and-mac-talented-forum-member (note the mac and linux link is down atm but it should be back up soon.
4c. if neither of those options suit you and you want a more perminate (note it did not work for me) solution, then try this forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728121
5. The service
You're screwed. (It works pretty nice where I live, but always manages to be dead when I need it the most.)
6. The Voicemail
While this is not carrier specific (all carrier voice-mails suck) , I thought I would include the fact that you can get visual voicemail from Google via its Google Voice voicemail service using your current number. For more information go to this link google.com/voice
note sorry my links are so weird, I am a new member and they do not let me post links.
If you have anything you would like to add, please add it in a reply
this is great thank you !
Thank you for taking your time I'm pretty sure it'll be really helpful to us users.
WE just need A FREAKEN MOD to sticky this. Well, first we need a mod.

The only sure way I know of to unroot is to flash the original ROM. As samsung does not provide this we need to wait for someone to pull it off the device.
the guide says it is recommended to DELETE or NOT to delete the listed AT&T apps? I'm confused at that part
Another guide: How To: Remove AT&T From Captivate
Includes: root, sideloading, remove market censorship, delete bloatware.
Thanks for this nbs!!
Do you know if the sideloading process listed above works on a mac?
I have I 9000 but same... rooting only puts a version of Su in system/xbin and busybox. It also installs supeuser.apk. any of this can be undone.

Yes, I have a rooted captivate with side loaded apps (Asphalt 5, PDAnet, etc.) that I just threw on my SD and installed that way.

[DEV] Removing System Apps

Ok I bought a Sim Free Desire HD so its completely stock, straight from HTC.
However its got some stuff I would quite like to remove such as Amazon MP3, Peep, News, Stocks, Transfer Data and Teeter, however these are locked down.
I have tried to remove them using adb however it says I do not have permission as the system is read only.
My device is rooted using VISIONary.
Here's the commands i've been running.
@adb shell rm /system/app/amazonmp3
Which should work, but I get this error
rm failed for /system/app/amazonmp3.apk, Read-only file system
Now, I thought root gave us these permissions?

the last version of titanium backup is able to totally remove system and/or preinstalled apps, like amazonmp3 etc. tried it and it worked for me, after two reboots the app is completely gone!
all of the above "hacks" didn't work for me (although i am temp rooted with visionary and used the "su" command), but titanium backup did the trick!

[GUIDE]Uninstalling Stock/System Apps

Hello all :=)
Thought i would give a small quick guide for you hehe.
Ofc root your phone before this :=)
Step1.
Install Titanium Backup from market.
Step2. Start it.
step 3 Firstly, after you run Titanium Backup you need to tap on "Problems?" and accept to download BusyBox.
Step 4. Keep your finger pressed on the app you want removed.
step5. On the bottom of the options that comes up you find force remove app.
That simple it is
Im aware of some people have posted this in threads and such, but i thought i would make a simple straight forward guide for them that did not know about titanium backup
Warning
This will stop the OTA updates for your phones.
You will need to download the ZIP for the update when it's released here to update.
Or the RUU
The guide is incomplete. Firstly, after you run Titanium Backup you need to tap on "Problems?" and accept to download BusyBox.

You need to have the newest TitBackup 3.5.7.3 to do that. Then remember not to use Uninstall option but you need to keep your finger for a little longer to see full list of options and then select force to remove using Paul's recovery.

Works great!
Got it working now Is it true that if there's a new ota we need to flash this rom from scratch to be allowed to get the update?

Apps you install cannot use the space freed up with removing stock apps so it's useless. I rather freeze them with Titanium Backup and they're removed from the launcher and don't use system resources.

simple question about titanium

Lately, I've been using titanium, and it will go to install an app like normal, but in the middle of it, it will open up the install prompt and either say "are you sure you want to install this app?" or "this app already exists, do you want to overwrite it?" "verify apps" in settings is unchecked, so I don't understand. never had this problem before. any help? debugging is also on btw, in dev settings.
Thanks for any help.

Usually this happened to me when I was attempting to restore something from Gapps, like Gmail, Search, or Email. I had to use Root Uninstaller to get rid of the stock versions first to avoid the prompt.
Do you use lucky patcher?
I had this issue also, I noticed it only happened with apps that had info stored on my SD card. I would wipe the app cache and sometimes delete the old app info entirely and it stopped happening for me.

[Q] Maximise storage space

Hey guys, i am interested in maximising my HTC One Mini 601s storage space and have seen this but i am unsure if i would be able to use it on my phone, or how to for that matter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348256
Straight out of the box the storage is 5.2GB / 16.00GB used and id love to remove the bloatware apps but for some reason using titanium backup with root access wont get rid of them (they just appear again after reset)
Im pretty novice in the ways of android at the moment so i dont want to go deleting files using root explorer and brick my phone.
I thought about putting on the magio rom, but i hear it can potentially be unstable or mysteriously drain battery life.
I guess what i am asking is, what is the best way to bring my phone right back to stock android, remove bloat and maximise space?
I'm using Magio R3 and haven't had any battery issues. For me the best version of android for our phones, though I only used stock for a couple of weeks before rooting. I'm able to use the JMZ kernel which has some nice touches, and I don't suffer any wierd bugs. Though with this version a few paid apps are blocked from play store. But easy enough to grab else where and send them a cheque in the post. Magio has some apps removed but not all that can be. I'm still testing which can be removed and which can't.
Anyways.. Only had a glance at this rom cleaner but it might just be for Samsung phones. You wanna search for a HTC one. Personally I don't like these system app removal scripts. They always take something you use and leave stuff you don't. Plus they can still brick your phone if not specifically designed for your phone.
Personally I make a nandroid backup and use Titanium Backup to remove system apps. If you find an app your unsure about Google it, there are a lot of descriptions for all the htc apps on Google.

Thanks for the reply Ruffbuster,
Ill keep away from ROM cleaners since i can only find a htc one x version.
I don't think i am ready to replace a kernel, but installing the Magio rom could be on the cards later.
I have two questions though
1) Can i completely 'format' my internal storage before i put on the rom, or will that just brick the phone
2) Any idea why Rooted Titanium Backup cant uninstall bloatware (they just re-appear upon reset)

When you are i recovery ready to flash your new ROM, if you want to COMPLETELY loose all your user data, then you wipe a factory reset, then FORMAT data, it will ask you to type "yes" to make sure you actually want to do this....
You can't get rid of the system apps as the system is write-protected - this can be made read/write by either s-off (advanced) or flashing a custom rom (Magio) with the custom kernel built-in.
To debloat, check my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568061
Say thanks if this helps!!!
You both deserve a thanks, I didn't see that button haha.
Okay so turning S-OFF, I can only assume doing so will also practically roll out a red carpet to hacks and viruses, and that unrevoked forever app seems to make it easy to turn it off, but instructions are vague at turning it back on.
Just out of curiosity, is there a wiki for general android hacking and terminology?
And i will try your custom romcleaner file, it sounds promising since you recommended it to someone with a HTC One Mini
You guys are great, thanks for being so helpful
I assume you are rooted? If so, I can give you a step by step guide to s-off, back to s-on etc - it's easy to do, I've just taken out all the tech talk etc....
You won't become open to hacks, viruses - quite the opposite in fact, as you will be able to install adware and malware blockers etc.
PM me if you want to try....

Yeah dude i rooted it and its got superuser 1.0.2.8 installed
Perhaps later, its 11PM and im on painkillers for an ear infection so its not the prime time to be messing with my phone
Is there anything wrong with using moonshine/rumrunners/unrevoked
they seem fairly straight forward methods
I'm not keen on that method - the binary involved, revone, is 400kb, rumrunners download is 25MB.... Personally I'm not keen on "wizards" doing things you can't control.... Plus, you never learn if everything is automated... Hehe! Either way, feel free to give me a shout if you want advice or help.... Take it easy....
