[ROM] Mostly Blurless Gingerbread - Milestone 2 Android Development

With all the information I got in this community I've cooked up my own ROM. I decided to share it, maybe someone would like it.
I am no dev, so this isn't actually a true custom ROM.
What I've done:
I've flashed the latest Gingerbread leak
I rooted it
I installed Defy Bootmenu
I installed Busybox
I installed GApps (including new Talk with voice/video chat - working)
I deleted BLUR social capabilities
I haven't done anything fancy, such as overclocking/undervolting, multitouch enablers etc. If you want those, you should use MS2Ginger from Walter79... Or you can install those options by yourself offcourse
If you'd like the stock Gingerbread ROM from Moto, but without the "social" capabilities, I've got this option for. I'm not exactly planning on supporting it too much (Gonna take a holiday and preparing for final year of study...)
However I might try to get rid of annoying bugs if they occur. The Euro key doesn't work by the way. I know that but I forget to fix it every time
As far as I can tell everything works fine on my UK Milestone 2.
Download:
10-09-2011: v3
24-08-2011: v2.1 (With undervolt)
24-08-2011: v2
13-08-2011: v1
Installation:
Extract the archive on your SDCard: sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/DeBlurred
Reboot in CWM (Via BootMenu you should choose custom recovery)
Go to backup and restore
Go to restore
Select the folder which contains the Nandroid: /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/DeBlurred
Confirm installation
Wipe dalvik-cache
Reboot
Click to collapse
If you're already on Rooted Gingerbread, you could only restore the system.img from the download.
By the way: even though it isn't necessary, I suggest a cache wipe from Motorola Recovery after you've installed the Nandroid. If you don't, the first boot might take a while and some compatibility issues might occur, as this ROM has Blur completely disabled.
Note to FroYo users:
You can't simply install this Nandroid and expect your Milestone 2 to boot! It will not work that way.
If you're on FroYo you should do the following after wiping the dalvik cache(Step 7):
Reboot into Bootloader mode
Flash FixedSBF: http://www.multiupload.com/KL6LSHIRCS
After this the phone will reboot automatically. First boot can take a long while if you didn't wipe data/cache.

When dialing in or out, sometimes Chinese characters appear in Dialer screen.
Sometimes when being called, the phone can't link the number of the incoming phone call with someone in the contacts list. E.g. the number +31612345678 isn't recognized as the 0612345678, even though it's the same.

Thanks for this rom
Have you edited build.prop to properly deactivate blur?

I think you don't need to do a full data wipe (even when upgrading from froyo), a Dalvik cache wipe is just fine. Wipe some buggy apps data if they are force closing or reinstall them.
@Milestone 2 (Finnaly on Gingerbread!)

How much free ram are you getting with this kind of roms?

Will i be able to restore my nandroid data backup from the 2.2 rom?
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App

@will5: Yes, I used the Build.prop edit to deactivate Blur. Most of the Blur Social apps also have been removed, except for exchange, yahoo and e-mail.
With a clean install you'll get to choose which of those accounts you want to add.
A clean install used about 150MB after boot. Right now I've got 15 apps installed and now it uses about 210MB of RAM
@imakdevries: You can try! Booting might take a while in that case and you might find that some apps/configuration doesn't work well, but that shouldn't be the case.
If it doesn't work, you can do a factory reset, after which your phone will boot this ROM clean.

I'm in ms2ginger
How do I install this?
Will it change the framework-res.apk?
I really unlike the ms2ginger framework-res.apk
Thanks
Sent from my Milestone 2 with GingerBread

I have added an installation guide to the OP.
As for your question about framework-res.apk: this ROM will completely overwrite MS2Ginger, including framework-res.apk.
It will revert back to the way Motorola intended (sans Blur Social capabilities offcourse )

so can I just restore the system.img without flash the froyo and data wipe?

Thank you so much. I will flash this rom to my m2
@tapatalk

Any way to get more languages on this ROM?

Maybe if you find the correct locale files on MS2Ginger Beta 5...
@Milestone 2 (Finnaly on Gingerbread!)

I didnt understand pretty well the way morelocale works. It only shows english and chinese, but you can enter PT, FR, SP and languages changes (partially). it's the proper way to use morelocale or im missing something?

I upgrade from froyo... I don't need to flash chinese leak before?

No, you have to flash the GB fixed SBF after restoring the nandroid.
Edit: You don't need to do a factory reset, just wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache

[CWM][I9003] CWM for Gingerbread XXKPH (coming soon)

This is temporarily unavailable. Will be back soon (only with CWM, for now)
Here I present you the CF-ROOT for I9003 [XXKPH only]
You can flash this over any other CWM or over the stock FW.
Feature Set:
- Root ( don't need to use SOC or any ZIP);
- Busybox 1.17.2;
- init.d support (you can put in the folder /system/etc/init.d all the script that you want to be loaded at the startup);
- Added EXT4 support to the phone ( so you can convert the filesystem to ext4 to improve performance);
- Added "Reboot into Download Mode" from within CWM
- full working CWM Manager (backup - restore - delete backup - install apk (Thanks to Skin1980)
- flash update.zip - flash kernel - reboot to CWM);
- Tweaks Manager with various tweak ( Ram Min Free - SD Speed - I/O Scheduler - Kernel Scheduler - CPU Conservative Governor - Swappiness - Ram Script by Juwe11 - Media Stagefright)
Thanks to Skin1980 (I have used his CF-Root for XXKPE and tweaked it for XXKPH).

Is TouchWiz AppDrawer pinched to zoom out animation smooth on this version? Any ext4 CWM/CF-ROOT released for XXKPE previously has this problem.
EDIT: Your tar file is much smaller? How did you do it?
Brilliant!
Btw, any possible issues installing this after the rooting has been done by old CWM+SOC+reflash new normalboot.img method?
nice work mate
Pressing the home button instantly reboots the phone after I flashed this over XXKPH.
LE: Nevermind, seems to be a one time issue, everything works fine now. Phone rooted. Thanks!
Thanks a lot man!
@thedirtchamber: Launcher problems / inconsistencies. Need more details mate. What mods have you done? Using some other launcher? Theme?

No mods, using Launcher Ex, no themes. Like I said, happened only after first boot. I got into the settings menu, then I wanted to go back to the home screen using the phone button and it rebooted almost instantly (the image faded for 2 seconds before it rebooted).

Sorry for that Skin1980. I was in a hurry to get my hands dirty on XXKPH. I have my own version of CWM, where I am doing more things like 2nd partition in External SD, EXT4 on internal and external SD, Busybox 1.19, etc.
I have a different version of CWM version created for public, as I have very different setup from the rest.
I really liked your work on CF-Root, so I thought of including that as well and also provide you necessary credit.
Also, I am in the process of porting CyanogenMod for I9003 (still a long way to go), in which I would be creating a different version of CF-Root.
I am going to remove the CF-Root portion from my version of CWM and will post this soon (Removing the current CWM version from this thread, for now).
You are correct, I could have contacted you. Sorry again for that.

Untested from Gingerbread, prob wont work from GB. But it MIGHT, need some1 to test it
i just cant flash back to GB to test it.. need my phone for work since im ONCALL!
I tried the other CWR backup that was released but i kept getting MD5 sum errors. Im on CM7 right now, will test flash with your CWR backup

@MHX - No MD5 Sum errors with your backup, restored fine. Booted normally (and fairly quickly i might add)
I went Cyanowiz CM7 with UCLA3 Modem -> Your CWR backup using your instructions no special steps.
Confirmed Working: Data & Service, Audio, Calls, Wifi, well... Everything
So we don't flash this correct? We just put it in the root and go to restore backup? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
what means "•Phone services removed to save more battery" ?
Is there really more battery (about 30min - 1h) or only 10min?
Phone.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk are removed, it's about 20~60min in standby mode or 10min in use
it's also less memory used, a better stability I think
But without it you can't do a factory reset from setting menu (use recovery instead)
and I think it will block the OTA checking
but with a custom root rom you don't need this features
I had using ur rom for 1 day, everything good :good:
Thx so much for ur hardwork.
Thx for remove the useless phone feature in this rom.
Maybe u can try Go Laucher HD, all free n nice.
go launcher is good but not stable
I prefer hololauncher because very close to stock and fully optimized for ICS

[Q][First Flash] AOKP v8 procedure

Hi guys, its my first time trying to flash a phone, sure don't want to end up with a bricked device, so please bear with me!
I currently have Gingerbread 2.3.4. I've the attached firmware stuff. I kinda have an urge to 'upgrade'. I think that ICS and JB really look slick. (How can I not? Spent 2 years on stock GB!)
The ROM I've narrowed it down to, is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1883038(latest version, v8) However, I need some clarification:
1. The camera seems to be work -if we install Camera Illusions Pro app- . Can anyone confirm this?
2. Is battery drain really that bad? The phone is going to be on standby for most of the day. Also, this issue only seems to be affecting a few people.
3. Are there any 'breaking' issues, such as 'pattern lock causing phone to crash'? Or 'random crashes'? Missing contacts? I'm scared when people report this sort of stuff but I don't think its going to really be a problem...
4. Is there tried/tested/100% foolproof method to revert to Gingerbread 2.3.x from AOKP v8? I really can't afford to brick this buddy right now...
5.
* most imp thing is do not use TB for app's data restore only use this for app's restore !! (from the AOKP JB Thread)

What's a TB? If CWM backups everything and helps to get back to GB, then I sort of get it... not clear here.
I've read around, I got a backup of my SD Card data, my contacts, etc. So, I guess its flash time. I plan to:
1. Download(ed) the ROM [aokp v8 by Ravi H Basawa.zip]. BTW, shoutout to you dude, you rock!
2. Download(ed) ClockWorkMod(assume that's what CWM stands for). I got a file called [beni_cwm-5_ext4_v2.tar] here.(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1505717)
Follow these to a 'T': (assuming its the same procedure for v8, I should hope it is! also, I hope the camera/audio patches are included in above files.)
2.Go to CWM and wipe data and cache.
3.Select install from zip from sd and navigate to aokp v7.
4.install it and do a data wipe and clear cache.
5.reboot the device
6.now again go to cwm and flash the camera patch ( do not perform any data/cache wipe ) reboot.
7.once again go to cwm and flash the audio patch ( do not perform any data/cache wipe ) reboot.
8. if the calculator is not working then flash calculator patch file and reboot.
9. if the sensors doesnt work properly then flash the sensor patch file and reboot.

TB=titanium backup (an app used to backup apps with data)
CWM will backup the whole ROM, you can't backup stock rom with it, you can't restore an individual app from your CWM backup, whole rom will be loaded into system.
Using TB you can save app with current status and install it back on your new rom hassle free. A must have if you switch roms too often or to save game data!
Read THIS guide first.
You need to have a rooted device with cwm5 installed and then proceed to install aokp8 :good:
Do the upgrade man!
it worth the effort!

*Init.d support is implemented in ROM only, not the kernel. CarrierIQ is removed automatically after first boot via an init script. Say thanks to @skeevydude for his help in getting this done. I shouldn't say "help", he pretty much did it!
Installation
Flash the Lollipop modem - see @autoprime 's thread here for modem zip
Flash the ROM zip
Wipe cache and dalvik (and in some cases data) if coming from a different ROM
Download

*No change at all to the ROM itself since v2, I just realized that I've been forgetting to zero out the free space on the image file before uploading, which saves about 600 MB when zipped. New flashable zip is about 1.1 GB instead of 1.7 GB.

ATT Apps
In case you want some of the ATT apps back, I have uploaded a zip here with those apps. This is NOT a flashable zip. You have a couple of options:
1. You may be able to install these as a normal (user) app by just pulling out the apk and installing the usual way.
2. If that doesn't work as expected, copy the app folder from the zip into the appropriate system folder as listed in the "Apps Removed" section.

Xposed Info
cmulk said:
Xposed has a couple of bad side effects at this point, so before doing anything you need to use Titanium or something similar to Freeze (this basically what the "helper" does):
LGSmartCover
Weather
Weather Theme
WeatherPlatform
Then you can install xposed as in the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811
However, there is still one more bug to keep in mind: Xposed will crash the Tethering and Networks menu. There is no fix for that yet, but as a workaround you can download some apps from the play store (like Mobile Network Settings), to shortcut around the menu that force closes.

CarrierIQ Removal
CarrierIQ has now been removed!
The removal is done via an init script that runs at boot to disable the IQ service before removing the files in order to prevent a force close. However, if you have to wipe data/factory reset without re-flashing the ROM, you will get a force close on the first boot. The good news is that I've tested this scenario and it should fix itself if you just wait about 20 seconds. In other words, the mentioned script does it's thing to stop the service to fix the force close and you are good to go after that.
Old info below:

On the 20f lollipop rom (either mine or stock, there's no difference) either freezing LADDM or removing the libraries and LADDM as you mention will cause a force close unless you disable the "IQService" first, which is built into the framework-res.apk. I have repeated it multiple times and it has been discussed quite a bit in the Lounge and other threads. Disabling the service is easy for users to do with the "DisableService" app, and then you can remove LADDM and the libraries as mentioned. The difficulty is that disabling a service is a user setting, so, for example, if I reflash my ROM without the IQ files onto a phone with clean /data, I will again get the force close and an unusable ROM.

Manual Steps
In the meantime, here is how users can manually disable CarrierIQ. I take no credit for this method, it is posted in several places by several people, I'm just putting it here for convenience:
YOU MUST DO THIS IN ORDER (or at least the first few steps)
1. Download the "DisableService" app from the play store
2. In the DisableService app, go to System -> Android System and disable the "IQService" service
3. Use a root explorer to delete the folder /system/app/LADDM
4. Use a root explorer to delete /system/lib/libiq_client.so and /system/lib/libiq_service.so
5. (Optional) Uninstall DisableService
Remember, disabling the service is a user setting, so if you need to wipe /data for some reason, you will need to re-flash the ROM (which has the CarrierIQ files included) or else you will get a constant force close when your phone boots.
I'll give it a try, thanks
Flashing now. Will report.
I will be watching this ROM. Thanks for posting.
Exactly what does " if coming from a different ROM" mean? I'm on 4.4.2 10f Wulf (stock - rooted) ROM

Just clean flash to save yourself a hassle

Thanks for your work. I wish I had some skill in this realm. It'd be nice to pick and choose which apps you wanted removed. I prefer the stock ATT Visual Voicemail app over the one in the Play Store as its more reliable. I also use some of the Google Apps that are removed here as well. But great job in getting something debloated out there.

Flashing lollipop Issues
Thanks for your work.... When flashing the 2 lollipop roms, 9 out of 10 times I get just a screen with icons, no wallpaper, no notification pull down no buttons at the bottom. I flash the modem the rom then SU and clear cache. I have only got the other ROM to flash successfully once. The same is going on with this ROM, is this happening to anyone else. I flashed it 5 times with the same results, would anyone know why this is happening, seems others dont have this issue. Thank you again for bringing us a debloated Lollipop rom.

Here is what I understand for a clean flash:
"1. Boot into Recovery
2. Make a Nandroid backup
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache partition
5. Wipe Dalvik Cache
6. Flash ROM
7. DO NOT REBOOT – STAY IN RECOVERY
8. Select backup and restore
9. Select advanced restore
10. Select the Nandroid backup you made above
11. Select Restore data
12. Select Yes – Restore data
13. WAIT!
14. REBOOT"
What I do not understand is step 8, which selects the backup made in step two... and then flashing the backup over the (new) ROM flash in step 6. Wouldn't that overwrite the new ROM you just flashed?

I have not seen that issue, but in case you are not clearing data you may need to try clearing dalvik cache.
Also, (and this is just a shot in the dark) you could try formatting system before doing anything else just in case something strange is left behind there.

You can try dirty flashing first without losing any of your data.
1. Back up your current Boot and System
2. Back up your current modem (if you're coming from the Kitkat modem), or just download a flashable KK modem already posted on XDA
3. Flash the modem and ROM in this post
4. Wipe cache and dalvik
5. See if it works
If it's not working, then you will need to restore your boot, system, and modem to go back to your original kitkat setup without losing data.
Otherwise, you'll have to backup with Titanium and do a clean flash (wipe data) as already mentioned. Using Titanium makes clean flashing not so bad
I do clear Wipe cache and dalvik I wipe everything and it boots back into a desktop and thats it no notification, the same thing happened with the first lollipop.. but after 10 flashes it finally took... so I thought Id try your de-bloated and the same thing is happening again, not sure why this is. I can jump back to kk after flashing the modem without issues. Thank you again for your work.

I agree that I use most or all of these Google apps as well. However, they update so often anyway that I prefer to just have them as user apps (otherwise you end up with 2 copies - the old static version in the system apps folder, and the updated version in the user apps folder).
As for the visual voicemail, I have posted the ATT apps in a zip in the OP. Visual voicemail is in the VVM_ATT folder.
Thanks!
cmulk,
Would you please clarify post 5 and 9 questions?

Sure thing! That's actually what I meant to do in post 13. I am not sure if you can flash over 10f without wiping data, but you could give it a try without losing anything (except time) if you look at post 13.
You should clear cache and dalvik mostly any time you are flashing, unless you are just flashing over another stock 20f ROM.

Have you tried formatting /system before doing anything else? I'm not sure that will make any difference, but just for process of elimination at least

Thanks I do clear everything but my external mem.
Ever since flashing this I'm getting "no sd card" messages every time I try to download anything ( I don't have an external sd card) but it's never been a problem before. I've restored a backup of my stock Tim and the problem followed me after full wipes.
