I was running stock 2.3.4 and successfully unlocked my bootloader using steps 1-5 of this thread and then tried rooting it using the simple Modaco method mentioned at the top of the same thread. It was late and I wasnt paying attention that it was for 2.3.2..
I got everything in terminal to say that it flashed correctly but when I unplug my phone I am stuck at the Google splash screen. After a battery pull I can boot into fastboot and choose recovery but then I am greeted with the android out of the box followed by a triangle ..I am assuming I have lost/ corrupted my recovery. Can anyone guide me out of this mess? Mac instructions would be greatly appreciated.
FIXED: Flashed the appropriate ROM from this thread
Edit1: Since I can access CWM from Fastboot can I just mount USB, transfer a ROM or nandroid and flash it?
Edit: Fastboot Menu Info:
HW Ver: Rev 11
Bootloader Ver: i9020xxka3
Baseband Ver: i9020xxd1
Lock State: Unlocked
Did u try pushing up and the power to access the recovery menu
Sent from my Nexus S 4G
Yes after a battery pull I can push vol + and power...which brings me to Fastboot mode not recovery...
Now an update.. I tried starting all over again using Kenvan19s thread I can now select recovery from the fastboot menu and enter CWM v 3.0.0.5 but again if I reboot I am stuck at the Google splash screen

flash recovery in fastboot
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
im kinda noobish...../ Slow
once i boot into fastboot mode what do i do
Put recovery in your tools folder, go to fastboot and plug in your phone
Make sure your phone is recognized in fastboot by typing "fastboot devices" ... a serial no. should pop up
Then type
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
* bolded part being whatever the name of your recovery image is
ex. "fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img"
thanks for the help i got it to work
No problem
So, basically, the details on the Xoom:
Android Version: 3.2.1
Build: HTK75D
Kernel: 2.6.36.3-g111d827 [email protected] #1
Bootloader is unlocked
I am trying to install Tiamat's Clockworkmod image via the ADB method. I do exactly these steps:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery Tiamat-*********-cwm.img
According to the adb console, it says it flashed correctly, and the fastboot also gives the same confirmation.
fastboot reboot
I boot up normally, and run:
adb reboot recovery
It then gives me the dreaded ! mark.
I've spent more than 5 hours trying to get the recovery working, and have tried re downloading the img, changing cables , and the only method that gave me a small glimpse of hope is flashing another img file (cwm 3.0.2.8 flashed) which worked once and then reverted to the ! mark.
Help? If any other info is needed, I will gladly provide.
try this:
1) Flash the recovery via bootloader and the fastboot command
2) After the flash, issue fastboot reboot to reboot the xoom
3) At the M logo during bootup, start hitting the volume down until you see Recovery on the top left corner then hit volume up to select it
That should get you into clockwork mod recovery, after you flash the root package you'll be good to go
Scsa20,
Has this been verified?
Should the offending files, (/system/recovery-from-boot.p OR
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh) be removed per Joe Ferreira's post?
I will try this fix after it has been verified (I've given you a thanks already )
After I used superboot from:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-root-nexus-s-with-a-single-click-using-superboot/
I completely bricked my Nexus S. I can get into fastboot mode but when I do recovery I can see only black screen with open lock symbol. Is there any way how to get back to stock ROM? I have read some advices on net, what is your experience or best solution? Thank you
Why dont you flash cwm recovery from adb/fastboot?

That's what you get when you try to root the "easy way"... more problems. You should have just unlocked bootloader on fastboot and flashed the superuser.zip from recovery after flashing CWM from fastboot.
Anyways, as to unbricking your Nexus S... did you take out the battery for atleast 10 seconds and then start up your device? Also, tell me if you can flash a recovery from fastboot or does fastboot not recognize the phone?
I can get into fastboot and I see product name, serial, bootloader version but when I click on recovery I see short android logo and then black screen only. I took out battery and start up device but then only black screen with open lock symbol.

welll, I tried instal different ROM and oops it is working, thanks.
I recently bought a HTC One XL 4G from the Telstra Shop. I unlocked the bootloader successfully through the HTC DEV website. Downloaded Hasoons 2000 HTC One X All in one kit and flashed the kernal with stock 2.6.39.4. The phone rebooted, displaying the message 'this mode is for development purposes...' Phone is running image version 2.40.841.4, HBOOT 1.14.0002. Radio 0.20os.32.09.15. EVITA S-ON.
What I can do: I can boot into recovery mode. The device in windows is displayed as 'my HTC Phone'. I can send Fastboot commands through the CMD window to relock bootloader, restart, clear cache etc.
What I can't do: The factory reset, clear storage, recovery etc when pressed reset the phone back to the ''this mode is for development purposes...' message. I have tried to use an ROM Ruu updater utility to reset back to stock but cannot find the right version for 2.40.841.4. I have downloaded a Stock_Root ODEX 2.40.841.4 that matches, however not sure how to install onto phone.
Obviously I am an extreme noob, however there does not seem to be many resources for the HTC One XL roms. Really run down with this process, don't seem to be making any headway. Should I send this back to Telstra ?
Please Help !!!!!
Connect to PC, install twrp recovery, boot into recovery, download and place flashable stock kernel or any ROM on your device ( you can mount sd card through recovery ).
You can also just download and flash kernel ( boot.img ) using below command while you have your phone in fastboot USB mode connected to PC
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Thanks for the reply, appreciate your time. I connected to PC, successfully flashed 'openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-evita'. Rebooted phone, stuck in loop still resets to 'this build is for development..' then switch off, then switches on again.
How do I boot into recovery ? ...the next step ?
power off -- then hold power + volume down - It will go to fastboot - from there you can go to recovery

Thanks so much. I am back in business.
I want to update my nexus 5 version 4.4 to 4.4.2 however i have a big problem when using TWRP to make a backup of my system, my current system is:
From fastboot mode
Name: hammerhead
Variant: hammerhead D821
HW Version: rev_11
Bootloader version: HHZ10X
Baseband version: M8974A-1.0.25.0.17
Kernel version: 3.4.0-g9ab14ba
KRT16M
If I press BACKUP from TWRP the phone will restart with a message: No commands
Here if i press the power and volume up buttons there appear few options: reboot system now, apply update from ADB, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition (NOTHING related to TWRP i supose).
If from the (power + volume up + volume down) menu I select Recovery mode, again the phone restarts and i get same screen, "NO COMMANDS".
The device is rooted and working properly but on version 4.4 i also have SuperSU Pro v1.85 installed.
For flashing i used this: theunlockr.com/2013/11/06/root-nexus-5-cf-auto-root-method-video/
The applications that i "consider" that could give any problems are: Xposed installer, ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, Greenify.
Is there any solution to this "No commands" thing?
PS: i woudnt like to flash stock again to lose all my data + apps. Anyway, if i had to flash stock again, how would i keep all apps and data i currently have ? Could Titanium backup do that ?
You're on stock recovery that's why. Not sure how it came back but it did. Will need to flash it again to backup your rom

Root and custom recovery are two different things. If you want to upgrade to 4.4.2 just fastboot flash the system and boot image from the 4.4.2 factory image. If you want to get twrp back, fastboot flash the twrp image.

I was following this forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2557523 [ROM] [STOCK] Android 4.4.2 KOT49H - Rooted/Busybox/Odexed (12/10/13)
But i stopped in Instruction 1 since i wanted to backup everything i had in case of fail. I think i can install 4.2.2 following that guide WITHOUT doing a backup of my system, but question: If i install 4.2.2 successfully will bootloader be unlocked so i can backup my system with TWRP, AFTER i install 4.2.2 ?
The main issue is that i want to upgrade to 4.2.2 but i dont wanna risk on breaking the system and ending up into an endless "No command" loop... Thats why i want to do a backup first.

Bootloader will be unlocked if it is now. But if you don't have twrp installed now you'll have to install it first to flash that rom
And rfbrow

If I were you I'd fastboot flash the twrp image again. See if that gets your recovery back

Assuming you don't have the path to ADB defined, just browse to the folder where you have adb installed.
Copy and paste the recovery image here (latest I think is openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.4-hammerhead.img).
Then hold the "Shift" key and right click inside the folder. You should see an "Open command window here" - click that.
Once the command prompt opens, restart your phone in fastboot, connect it to your computer and type "fastboot devices". This should return something like "List of devices" and a number underneath that will not make any sense to you - but it's telling that you have the fastboot drivers correctly installed and your phone is detected.
You can now start flashing the recovery image. You do that by typing "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.4-hammerhead.img" and hitting enter. You should see some progress going on, and then telling you that it finished.
Still on the command prompt, type "fastboot reboot-bootloader". This should restart your phone in fastboot mode, and your new recovery should now be active. You can open it now using the volume and power keys.

Thanks dude this solved my issue, i could successfully do my backup, gona try to flash 4.4.2 next days.
Solve command recovery problem
It is not an error at all. When you are in the recovery screen with "no commands", while holding power button press volume up once. Then you'll get the recovery options. Hope it helps, I found that solution on official google support forums
