Wireless tether and Paying for Hotspot - Verizon Droid Charge

any clue if i'd get flagged if i used a 3rd party tether app while paying for hotspot? i prefer the info all the other tethering options give - throughput, bandwidth, etc. though i do wish infrastructure worked better on the 3rd party apps.

I highly doubt it.
I highly doubt you'd get flagged even if you weren't paying for tethering, for that matter.

I don't think so unless you're retarded and pulling in huge numbers like 50+gigs a month, that'd look suspicious especially when it shows it's phone data

What is the data cap if you do pay the extra $30 per month to tether? This is for the grandfathered unlimited data plan.

yeah, how does anyone claim a cap on unlimited when they now have actual data tiers of which none that I'm subscribed to. I'll continue using 3rd party tethering and see if I get called out.
I stream Netflix to my tablets to and from work and use up around 500MB per day.

well there are two kinds of tethering now, wireless (mobile hotspot) and via usb... there is no unlimited plan to wirelessly tether afaik, now that doesn't stop anyone from tethering anyway if they have unlimited data... technically verizon doesn't like it and can cap you or block data for you altogether, but the way I see it is if you're paying a premium for unlimited data then tether away lol

$30 4G Unlimited Tethering Plan confirmed!!

In case anyone cares, I was able to add the $30 Unlimited 4G hotspot tethering plan to my T-bolt account. At first the rep was not aware of the plan but after some digging around she located the code to use. She then had to read through to make sure it was unlimited, and it is.
Now lets see how much data I can chew through before they throttle me back.

I'm tethering right now using my droid incredible. I haven't paid for a tethering plan. I hear only the stock verizon tether app alerts you of a needed data plan if used.
I am rooted and although it's tempting to use the wireless tether app, I'd rather not violate the carrier TOS and end up with a very large cell bill. It's $30/mo for my own peace of mind. I live and work in a very good 4G area so it's worth it for me since it's much faster than my AT&T DSL (3.0mb/s) home internet. If and when Verizon throttle me back I will make a decision on whether to keep it or not. I am not against using the tether apps, don't get me wrong, I just choose not to use them.
Disregarding the fact that you could do this for free, that is a very good deal.

I agree. Maybe I will get a good couple of months out of it before I have to switch to a real internet provider..
My intentions here were just to let others know the rumors of the unlimited hotspot plan were actually true for those that might want to grab it up.

That is a good question. I am not sure if a new customer with a tiered 3G/4G data plan can get the unlimited 4G hotspot. Maybe a Verizon rep will chime in. But yes, my total is $60 on top of the voice plan/text costs.

after switching to verizon, I was going to turn off my time warner hotspot and just eat the etf thinking I would just pay for tethering as needed. But time warner gave me 30 bucks/month in discounts and free showtime for me to keep it. So my hotspot (based on sprints 3g/4g) is only costing me 10bucks a month. Nice to have so that when I don't get verizon 4g, I probably get sprints.
I decided to cancel my fios tv and internet service and rely solely on the vzw 4g so I ponied up the 30/month. Well worth it IMO.

(T-Mobile US) What happens if you attempt to wifi tether using stock menu options?

So what happens if you set up wifi tethering and start using it without a tethering plan?
Do they know automatically or do they attempt to guess based on increases in data usage?
This would be using the menu options available to you under Network settings in STOCK (not rooted).
there no tethering plan with t-mobile you can wifi tether all you want. But if they do see that you're hitting your cap quickly lets say in a 3 month period. they'll text you if you want to upgrade.
when I was picking up my mt4gs, I overheard a rep trying to sell people an additional tethering plan. is that for unlimited tethering? I wanted to walk up to them and tell them I have been tethering since the G1 without any additional plan... the only real issue is getting throttled, but most months I don't hit the data cap.

If you attempt to tether or do wi-fi sharing on any T-mobile phone that is capable of it one of four things will happen.. Either
A) it will fail...
B) Any browsing attempt will re-direct you to T-mobile.com
C) You will automatically get directed to a page that prompts you to call Customer care to add the $14.99/month Tethering and Wi-Fi sharing feature
D) It will allow you to browse a certain amount and then give you the above page.
The feature has to be on the account for tethering to work long term.. Even if you get away with it for a short time, eventually they will catch you and shut you off until you add the feature. The $14.99/month allows you to share whatever data is on your phone (2GB, 5GB, 10GB) with the phone and Tethering... SO... If you have the 5GB data plan, you get 5GB to share between tethering and your regular phone data usage, then speeds get slowed down to approx 100kbps after that until the bill cycle resets.
Like i told you before there is no tethering plan for t-mobile. My gf tether her phone with her iPad all the time. Nothing had happen so far.
Say that now, but I am guaranteeing you that T-mobile will catch up with her eventually.. There IS a tethering plan and you can call T-mobile and and verify that whenever you want.

A grandfathered plan may be the reason you are still able to tether, but I will tell you that I am a T-mobile employee who works in the phone as modem department and there IS a tethering plan that t-mobile does charge for... Infact, go to t-mobile's website and search for "Tethering" and then look at all of the official documents for tethering with different devices and they will all mention the tethering and wi-fi sharing feature.

So how can they tell that it's tethering data vs. data from the phone? Especially since I can set my browser to desktop mode. Well, I'm too lazy to do it but if tethering ever goes to court, service providers will lose.

There is no way to tell between tethering and phone data... it's all lumped together... even when you add the tethering feature (if the system makes you) you get your data shared with your cell data usage so on a non grandfathered rate plan you get 2gb,5gb, or 10gb to share between tethering and phone data usage.

HTTP traffic is TCP which means it's encoded in ASCII which makes it really easy to scan what goes over the line. In those HTTP headers they can check what the user-agent is as well as the time-to-live setting on each packet which will be different from a windows desktop connection.
However it's possible to mask this. I could in theory make an SSH connection from the phone to an SSH server I have on the internet and tunnel all my tethering through that. It would be very difficult to prove tethering at that point because it would be masked behind the phone's connection to a server.
That all being said. In real world usage I might only tether once or twice a month in what basically amounts to not much more bandwidth usage then normal.
Also. The telecom providers are very backhanded about tethering. We made tethering possible before they knew what the **** tethering even meant. I've been doing this since before most people understood what it means to tether. And I signed up for my unlimited plan back when unlimited meant unlimited. So uh..... T-mo can go **** itself if they expect me to pay extra. lol.

It sounds like it's not the wifi app that's doing it, but the t-mobile data servers. I imagine they're acting as a captive portal, redirecting pageloads from a browser with a desktop user agent to their nag screen or something along those lines. I use a Sidekick 4G with the stock firmware and wifi app up here in Canada on the Wind network and it's been working fine.
(BTW, Wind beats the crap out of any American carrier! Their plans include free tethering.)
Networks are greedy they suck.

A lot of the android browsers are able to set user agent as desktop so I doubt it's that. They have blocked the free tether apps from the market and only provide theirs so I think it's just them monitoring their app.
BTW I'm jealous of your free tethering, as soon as the carriers heard people were doing it here they were quick to monopolize on it
Well, if t-mobile is able to interfere with wifi tethering even when you use a third party wifi tethering app, then there must be something else at play. I can't say what though as I'm not on t-mobile.
<brag> Wind is even better than that. $40.00 after tax for unlimited calling, unlimited long distance to US/Can, unlimited text messaging to anywhere on earth, unlimited data with tethering. And I get that whenever I'm connect to a Wind tower, anywhere in Canada. It doesn't distinguish between my home city and another. And no contract. It's prepaid! </brag>

What I mean is they block them in the actual market, like you can't download them. They have no way of monitoring 3rd party apps, that's why I think almost all US carriers have capped data so they can try and stop some.
Not fair man, US needs to get on bord with the contract free stuff. A cheap cell phone plan here for unlimitted is $80 a month and that comes with a 2 year contract, at&t and verizon charge around $120 for unlimitted
Have you tried sneaking one of the third party apps on to see how it works?
That's staggeringly awful. This is the most featureful cell phone plan available, and it's $40. I'm told that people in another province got the plan for $35 at one point.
Yeah we have to side load the apps, google search and download from the browser. I've had a copy in my sd card since the g1 days when things were good lol.
We also have at&t trying to buy out t-mobile which would more than likely drive prices up further. there are a few pay as you go carriers that offer cheaper plans for unlimitted data and text (around $40) but the minutes are rarely unlimited, the data is slower, and they are buying towers off the bigger companies so coverage is usually terrible
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I've always gotten Wireless Tether straight from the Google Code site. It always has the very latest versions, but somtimes earlier ones are the more stable.

I'm on T-mobile prepaid monthly 4g plan, rooted running GingerClone ROM on my Sidekick 4g, and I've had no problem tethering. (mostly just testing it out to see if it works, running speed tests etc.)
I can see how T-mobile cracks down on post-paid plans running stock software, but with a prepaid plan on a wifi-sharing-capable phone with a custom ROM, I'm in the clear, right? T-mobile can't block tethering or charge me for it?
But ya, charging $14.99 to tether using data that you're already paying for is a complete scam. Seems like a class action suit waiting to happen.

It uses your data plan, whatever that is. On t-mobile, iirc (on at&t now ), they don't charge you to enable tethering. On AT&T they do charge you to enable tethering.
Regardless of provider, your tethering uses your data plan, and hence if you have a 3G cap/month, and you use 3G of tethering, you are capped on your data plan, and will probably get throttled.
Not necessarily true....t-mobile now offers true unlimited data plans....such as the "value plan" in which is the plan I'm on.
Although your not suppose to tether on but there is easy enough ways around that.

Unlimited Data & Native Hotspot

I have grandfathered unlimited data & also grandfathered unlimited data hotspot from verizon. I think I pay $30 monthly for the hotspot feature. I know there are many ROMS that have native tethering without having a hotspot subscription.
What I am wondering is if I cancelled my hotspot, would I be able to use the phone's unlimited data plan to use insane amounts of tethered datas? The month I moved and was without internet for a month I used 70+ GB on my hotspot (which has unlimited data) and Verizon never made a peep. I gather from "openyoureyes" recent post that he uses 55+ GB of data every month without a word from Verizon. I don't know if any of that is tethered.
Does anyone use native tethering on an unlimited plan, using lots of tethered data without incident? I guess I'm asking if Verizon has any way to know if your unlimited data is being used by your phone or a tethered device if you use native tethering?
Thanks
I use anywhere from 50-80 gigs a month and Verizon hasn't complained. I don't have a tethering/mobile hotspot plan but I do have my beloved grandfathered unlimited data and I use the native mobile hotspot a lot...been doing this for at least 2 years.

I have unlimited data grandfathered - and I use the hacked hotspot constantly. I let my kid watch netflix while we're driving long distances (most weekends). I watch netflix myself, often. I easily use 60-80 gigs a month. Verizon has never said anything - ever.

I use anywhere from 50-80 gigs a month and Verizon hasn't complained. I don't have a tethering/mobile hotspot plan but I do have my beloved grandfathered unlimited data and I use the native mobile hotspot a lot...been doing this for at least 2 years.

Thanks for the $30 a month guys, where do I send the check?.....
Unlimited data here and I don't pay for the hotspot either. I don't use near as much data as those folks above but I've been doing it for almost 3 years.
$30? **** that.

Did Verizon not lose a class action over charging for LTE hot spot some thing about breech of deal with the spectrum and them agreeing to not charge for the feature.
Yeah, for tiered data subscribers. Unlimited subscribers is kinda a grey zone.

Correct, but that is for the "new plans", the ones with limited data use. I don't know if they specifically say NOT unlimited, but it wasn't intended for us. However, I don't think it would be hard to dispute if they randomly tried charging you extra.
I use about 40GB a month, most is from normal use. Maybe 10GB is from tethering... I try to do most of my downloading through my phone so they don't try to get me for tethering. I can literally do anything I want from my phone that my laptop can do (in terms of data use), its just a little more convent to tether sometimes.
