TF not connecting to PC / Can't get into APX mode - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Used Nvflash to root a while back ago. Worked flawlessly.
Started having problems where the TF was not connecting up to the PC (both laptop and desktop). No problems charging. I know there's something going on cause when I plug the TF into the USB port, the screen comes on. When I unplug it the screen comes on.
Thought it possibly was the the ROM (Prime 1.7). Wiped caches and re-installed. Nothing. Wiped data & caches and re-installed Prime 1.7 from scratch. Nothing. Wiped data & caches and installed Prime 1.6. Nothing.
Everything works fine other than I cannot get the TF connected (detected) on the PC and I cannot get into APX mode. I'm sure they're related. Did a search for not being able to get into APX mode and found a couple but no help.
I can get into recovery and see the tf in adb. Don't know what else I should be looking at.
[Update]
Just got the TF back from Asus. Missed it sooo much.
The ticket inside said they couldn't find any problems with it.
By the time the TF was off to Asus, I got my extra charger and cable. Tried the new usb cable and bam, device found. Most likely I was in APX mode but due to the cable, would have never known. The odd thing is the cable charges both the TF and the dock perfectly. All that for a f-n cable.
Now I'm fighting with Asus to replace my cable.
I hope this finds its way into others having the same issue.

Are you trying with a Linux machine or Windows?
Make sur you have all the required drivers installed for windows. APX requires additional ones....
On linux you will not see the device automatically when in APX but you can execute the nvflash script

Unfortunately I only have Windows machines.
When I press Volume Up + Power, I get nothing. It doesn't detect there's an APX device in my device manager for me to even install the drivers.
Also tired Volume Up + Volume Down + Power and nothing

Went back to total stock and I still can't get into APX mode and can't connect to the PC.
Talked to Asus support and they're stumped. Was told they had to research and get back to me.

This just happened to me. I booted HC then went to applications. Disabled/re-enabled USB debugging, then I went to device manager on windows and clicked "Scan for Hardware changes". It worked after that.

Tried that method as well.
Sent it off to Asus on a RMA. Crossing my fingers

So this just randomly happens to me the day before I am supposed to sell it to someone. I went to nvflash it back to stock and noticed this issue. You said you restored it back to stock before you sent the RMA in, how did you go about doing so? I'd like to get it fixed so I can sell a functional unit.
Thanks

I'm also facing the same problem with my pc/laptop not detecting the TF101. The service center is of no help and they just give me the usual answers - try other pc, check the cable etc.
Moreover, I cannot go into recovery mode even with all the necessary drivers installed. Only a green droid with an exclamation mark.
I've no problem rooting the tf on older firmware. Wondering if the bootloader is locked.

I think it sounds like the usb cable as the op said it fixed his issue. I'm looking around for one to test on.

Im on prime 1.7 and just experienced difficulty connecting, but can still charge. I just started the troubleshooting and found this thread. Disappointed, yet happy that its probably only the cable.

Well do you get any response from your computer? Anything, like a sound? a error installing drivers? a unknown device? Are you using the docking keyboard? Also this may not be the case but make sure you dont have a USB hub or anything extra on it. You can also try connecting it to the computer and open device manager and click scan for hardware changes. See if something new comes up. I have a couple more extensive ways of testing but let me know if this helps.

The new infuse drives me mad

Okay, to make it short, I've brought home a Samsung Infuse for testing. It's not even a day yet and it's showing one hell of a problem already. Firstly, I can't install the right drivers for it. I've used Kies and tried downloading every drivers I can find but no, the phone won't even connect as mass storage. I tried going into download mode by holding the volume keys and insert the usb cable but it only gets in download mode once every 20 tries or so, the other times it just boots right into the OS. In the rare cases of successful download mode, Odin won't recognize the phone. I used SGH-i997-UCKJ4-One-Click and finally it said the phone is connected, but intructed me to install the right drivers. So I did exactly as it said but the whole process of reinstalling drivers just repeats. I put the cm7 and mosaic ROMs in the phone using wifi and flashed them, here I met another problem, the phone keeps getting into car mode. I disabled it, and the phone changed orientation although I tried disabling it back and forth. I'm raging at it here, does anybody know about these problems or should I throw the infuse at the seller's face?

sounds like an issue with the usb port not the drivers.
try cleaning it, or you may need to send it to samsung for repair. if you dont want to do that then i'd make you an offer on it, but you might be insulted at what id pay for a "broken" device.
Something I ran in to as well, I ended up using the ports on the back of my PC.
Something else too ... I ended up using a Blackberry USB cable.
Hope this helps

Yea not an issue with infuse but the USB port. My laptop connects to it if I use the secondary or tertiary USB ports.

people read the whole post. his issue is not limited to computer connectivity. the phone goes into car mode on its own. car mode is triggered by a simple resistor in the car dock. different resistor values will put the phone in the different dock modes, Adam outler had a bunch on information on USB standards when he made his own captivate car mount. what is going on is most likely that a piece of semi conducive material is trapped in USB port on the phone or the port is otherwise damaged on the phone. there could also be some physical issue or calibration issue with the chip that controls the USB. I have seen similar issues on my own phone and seen atleast one post with issues identical to mine.
the seller sold it for a reason.

no APX device

Whenever I take out the battery, hold up and down, and plug in the cable, I get unknown device, not APX device. When I go ahead and try to point that to my APX driver, out says that it's updated. I uninstall, reboot, and try again, and get the same results.
What is going on?. Got the phone from someone, I'm guessing, botched the flash, now, I don't even have an option too switch between charging and mass storage.
Going crazy...I just want the phone back to stock do I can do it right myself
Are you using the same port you installed the drivers on, if you are then try reinstalling. Usually you have to use the same usb port for the phone to be recognized or it will show it trying to identify the device and throw up errors like your getting.
If you want the phone back to stock you can always hit up the rom for recovery thread and when followed correctly will low level flash your g2x to gb 2.3.3 ota rom.

I would, but I have no USB connection to PC at all. My phone will only charge. I don't even have to option for mass storage or charge in settings.

go to settings/applications/development and make sure android debugging is checked, then plug into pc by usb. Also did you install lg drivers for your phone?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I did install drivers from LG. And I've.tried.with debugging on and nothing works. I believe IM also stuck on the stock recovery as well.
Check under the HDMI output protective cover and make sure there's nothing in there shorting any of the pins.
Sounds crazy, but I had the exact same problem as you, and it turned out there was a bit of metallic debris (little piece of something) rattling around under the HDMI cover that was shorting the pins. Took it out, worked great after that.
Good idea...I never would've thought about it...but alas, that isn't the problem.
so you downloaded the apx drivers, all you need to do is go to device manager and manually update the apx device so you can do the rom for recovery method.

got it....i finally got my hands on another charge/usb cable. for some reason, that was the problem. thanks for yall's ideas. though i do find it hilarious, that on two different forums, i had said that i had the drivers installed, and that the phone would ONLY charge when i plugged it into windows...everyone tells me to install the drivers.
as much as people on this site tell you to read the thread, very few people do. lol...
now i've got CWM recovery flashed, but when i try to choose to restore my stock zip, it tells me md5 mismatched

[Q] USB Connection on/off every 2 seconds

I am trying to connect via USB to my PC, not having much luck. I've tried several micro USB cables, and tried plugging them into every USB port on my PC.
When I plug in, and view "Devices and Printers" in Windows 7 32-bit, I can see a total of 6 LG devices show up:
LG Android Phone
LGE p999DW USB Device
LG Android (modem)
LG Android (NMEA)
LG Android (Serial)
Android Sooner Single ADB Interface
But literally every second some of them fall off the list and some reappear, sometimes they are all present for 1 second, sometimes none of them are present, and every combination in between.
I have no ideas left here. Uninstalled the LG driver from control panel, and reinstalled. Tried brushing out the USB port on the phone, as well as the old NES 8-bit blow method, no luck. Lots of cables tried all of which have worked in the past, no luck. Anyone have any thoughts?
Put the phone in apx mode by taking out the battery, holding vol +/-, plugging in the phone and waiting until the driver is ready.
Apx mode won't reconnect if dropped. .. I would guess a bad USB connector if the problem exists.
Also if the PC is overclocked turn that off. It messes with USB.

sound like a connection problem, either with the cable or your physical port on the computer
So it's connecting fine in APX mode, it stays connected in Devices & Printers. But I can't run the LG Mobile Support Tool from there, I've got to boot into Android. As soon as I boot into Android and connect USB, it's dropping the various device profiles in and out of Devices & Printers ever second.
Does it seems odd that I get a good solid connection in APX mode, but not when connecting with Android booted? Seems if the problem was with the USB connector on the phone, it would be an issue all the time.
Any other suggestions? I've tried going back to stock recovery and stock ROM, same issue. I'm really just trying to get the baseband update.

So you can safely say that the connector is good and cable its good. This suggests a software problem... either in Android or PC.
You can try the cleanup batch tool but I doubt it would solve the issue. Does not hurt to try though.

Are all of your Lg Drivers up to date?
No luck there either. Seems like a hardware problem, but it works fine in APX, only cutting in and out once Android boots.
I've been having the exact same issue.

Great, we've got strength in numbers!
So I've tried everything. I've flashed to stock recovery and OS, uninstalled the LG driver and reinstalled, multiple USB cables, different machines, USB debugging on/off, and every combination of things I can think of.
Sucks if if it's a hardware issue. Out of warranty period and I don't want to pay $130 or whatever the insurance deductible is for something so small... but I can't get 2.3.4 loaded without getting USB connected.
I'd be sure it's a USB connection problem, if I didn't get a smooth steady connection in APX mode. I've used NVFlash several times without issue.
Yeah I've only noticed it since i got the 2.3.4 update.
I've tried all my usb ports, and it will pop-up.
Last night i finally got it to let me decide to turn usb mass storage on but when I opened my computer nothing was showing up.
Just got a replacement g2x today after a long battle with my old one's usb port. When i was troubleshooting, I found that vmware and blackberry drivers can cause conflicts.
Try plugging in the phone and removing the drivers for all the LG devices you see in device manager.
btw... brand new replacement phone, if i move it the slightest bit while connected windows will play the disconnect/reconnect sound. I think LH just screwed up in the port design...
There's a funky greenish sticker around the usb port on this new one. Not sure what thats all about... cant tell if this is a refurb either.
Finally got mine to stop. I did a system restore on my laptop and it was good
@captmorganz the green sticker was on both my originals, and to check for the refurbished or not there is a code on the back under the battery by the screws that shows p999dw for original and something close but another letter at the end for refurbished, can't think right now since I've been at work for about 15 hours doing nothing and drinking coffee for the past 5 haha, excuse the rant.

About to RMA but dit not unroot & stock

So last week my B70 TF101 suddenly started to gave up on me... Rooted and running ARHD 3.4.0 for about a week, in the morning all was ok, played with it a little bit and put it away (not sure if I turned it off or locked screen only) and in the afternoon it didnt wake up anymore. Black screen, I could still here e-mail notifications and docking sound when plugged in the dock.
Repeatedly tried to hard reset, get into CWM recovery, and finally tried to hook it up to my desktop to get into APX mode. Got sure it was charged until dock LED was lit green, also had it hooked to charger directly for a few hours (without dock).
At this point when blindly tried to reset/power off/power on I did not hear any notification anymore except for the occasional camera shutter click but as I have no feedback if its on or off or whatever mode it was in I dont know if its running anymore or not.
Strangely not even my desktop recognizes it when plugged in with USB, trying to get into APX (vol up + power >6sec), no USB notification sound in Windows, new hardware found, refresh of the Device Manager tree, nothing.
I feel at least the backlight is defect but that doesnt explain the no response on USB so looks like there is more to it than just the backlight. I also tried to use a flashlight but cannot detect any screen activity.
So I decided as I still have 2 months warranty I would RMA it. It is beeing picked up tomorrow but have not been able to unroot and install stock recovery/rom...
Now my question is, what chances do you think I have if, lets asume, also the Asus repair centre cannot get access over USB so they wont notice it was rooted, will repair/replace it and send it back?
Did any of you guys manage to get your rooted TF101 repaired and returned under warranty? Or did you get charged? If so how much?
Thanks for any replies!
NVFlash is out for SBK2 devices, use that and repartition your device.

Yes thanks, and so I noticed, but that brings me to 2 questions:
1. I am not familiar with Linux.. Does that mean I have to wait until the tool is released for windows?
2. It clearly says "All usage requires booting your tablet into APX mode by connecting it to USB, turning it off and turn it back on while holding Volume Up!".
There is absolutely no response when I connect my TF101 by USB and try to enter APX mode. Would that be different on Linux?
FYI, I used APX a few times about a year ago to gain root, so I am not unfamiliar with this method. I know the USB hardware detected sound in Windows should sound when APX mode is entered and besides it should show up in the deivce manager. Neither is the case.
APX mode is power-volup, just to be totally clarified. Try reinstalling the apx drivers on windows manually, and you don't have to install linux totally, you can use a LiveCD or virtualbox to run NvFlash
You're right, typo edited.. I will try your suggestion, thanks.

wait, don't bother with windows drivers, you need linux if you're Sbkv2. They'll most likely notice if you're on a ROM, definitely if you have recovery, and may or may not charge you for repairs.

Update: some progress... guess what.. tried my friends USB cable and presto.. APX mode, was able to flash stock rom (http://www.xdafileserver.nl/index.php?dir=Asus/Asus+Transformer+(TF101)/ROMS/NVflash+STOCK/ICS+.21). Following succesful flash, tried powering off and on + voldown to get in recovery but does not give ANY visual feedback.
So still zero screen activity, during flashing, booting, whatever. At least I got it back to stock and can now turn it in for repairs...
Good, rma that and it should be fixed without complaint from asus.

[Q] No USB connection

So I hadn't really messed with my tablet in quite some time, but I recently came across a ROM I wanted to try (Team EOS 4 - Nightlies TF101 ). My tablet was already rooted running TWRP 2.4. I tried connecting my tablet to my PC to copy the ROM over to my microSD, but it would not recognize as a MTP Device. It would show up under USB Controllers in Device Manager, but as Unknown. I tried to reload the drivers, but was unable to get them to load. I just figured something was going on with my PC. So I copied the ROM straight to my microSD card and put it back in my tablet and flashed. Something went wrong (probably user error), because the tablet would't boot afterwards. So I thought no big deal, I'll just use EasyFlasher and take it back to stock. Put my tablet in APX Mode, but same thing. Unrecognized USB Device. Tried loading Naked Drivers, but it didn't see my tablet as compatible device. So I connected it to my laptop, same thing. So then I downloaded the stock firmware, put it on my MicroSD card, put the card back in my tablet and flashed it back to stock through TWRP. It booted up just fine, but I ran out of time to mess with it because I had to be at work. I just took my tablet and cable with me to work and figured I'd do it there if I got a chance. Later in the day, I connected it to one of our PCs at work, and now it wont ever recognize anything at all is being plugged in. Tried on multiple PCs and even brought it back home, and same thing. Tried to scan for hardware changes, and still nothing. What are the chances there is something wrong with my cable? I have rolled the cable up and carried it around with me in my pocket multiple times. The fact I can't get it to be seen as a MTP and / or APX device is what makes me think it could possibly be my cable. Any suggestions?
Thanks in Advance.

Yeah first thing to try would be the cable. Sadly there's no other way to access APX than through USB. I'm guessing if you can push/pull using ADB or other tools, the tablet itself is just fine.
I bought this cable and it works fine for both data and charging, it just takes a long time to arrive.

Thanks for your reply Lethe6. I was able to get in-touch with a friend I hadn't talked to in awhile and use his cable (TF300) and it worked just fine as MTP and APX. I even flashed back using EasyFlasher. Also thanks for the link. It's worth the wait IMO. I was scared to order just any ol'cable and find out that it only works as a charging cable, and not data.
Sweet, glad it all worked out!
