What Apn settings for google chat? - HTC Inspire 4G

Does anyone know how to make Google Chat (Talk App) stay logged in. After my phone has been idle for a little while, it logs me out of google chat, and I need to open up the app in order to receive messages again.
One thing I have noticed is this only seems to happen when I have two APN's configured. With APN settings like the one in this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042553
But on other roms with a single APN, it keeps me logged in. Any way to fix this with out deleting one of the APN's? I seem to get faster download speeds with two.
Currently using StarDroid....but pretty sure its an APN issue and not a Rom issue.

Interesting. I've also experienced issues while using two APNs. Enabling GPS would cause my data connection to drop momentarily. And after some testing, it was only when I used two APNs. I've since opted for one APN. Maybe Henry will chime in if he sees this. It'd probably help if you perused the thread to see if anyone else experienced anything similar. Everyone's device reacts differently to everything, so what works for some, may not work for others. Having two APNs doesn't play nice with my phone, even though my data speeds are faster.

Have you posted this also in Henrybravo's thread? Perhaps he might be able to figure this out. It does sound like a possible issue with the APN configuration.

[A] MMS isues on a Samsung Device

When I upgraded my Samsung Focus to Mango B1 (7661), I was pleasently surprised when I wasn't having any of the 3G (lack of APN) or MMS sending issues. I unlocked it with the unlock xml and the whole GPRS template loading from Diagnosis. I had no issues whatsoever. I considered myself lucky, and I shrugged it off.
Well, Mango B2 (7712) comes along, and then I noticed: No more 3G, no more MMS. At all. So I figured, okay, a lot of people had this problem, so it should be fairly easy to solve, MMS is a big deal to not have, SOMEONE'S fixed it, RIGHT???
And I was partially wrong. People fixed the 3G issues by readding the APN from their appropriate provider (I just googled my AT&T APN). However, I looked everywhere for the MMS fix. I found NOTHING.
Then I came accross one post saying that it was a shame that WP7 doesn't set the 'ADC' flag when you switch the SIM card. Well, holy crap, I knew I had seen that before. While I was recalling what app I had used, I coupled that bit of knowledge with something else. I knew that people had fixed this problem using the proprietary Network Profile Samsung app by temporarily switching carrier profiles and then switching back. So I thought to myself, what does the Network Profile app change? It changes, apart from other things, the APN (for 3G), and the MMS settings. So I figured, if the MMS settings are tied to ADC, and then the Network Profile app changes that, why not use an app I've used before to reset it?
So I looked through all my homebrew apps (Advanced Config., TouchXperience, & WP7 Root Tools), and, alas, none of them booted. BUT! I had forgotten all about the trusty Samsung Tools. I haven't used it in ages, but I though that that option was there. So I opened it, and behold, it didn't crash and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD it had the option to "Set 'Run ADC' Flag". The description almost made me cry from the overwhelming joy. The description says "Sets ADC to run at next boot to configure Data and MMS settings. I checked it, I rebooted, and I could send MMS.
If anyone with a Samsung Device in Mango is having MMS or Data issues, use Samsung Tools, and don't suffer as long as I did.
Actually, it can be done by changing HKLM\System\AutoDataConfig\RunADC from 0 to 1.
This is a question?

Dyskmaster, I'm amazed at your reading skills (though not your spelling). The section is called Q&A. Question & answer. Did it ever occur to you that someone might want to just post an answer?
As I am new to the wp7 scene, glad to find this post as this fix the problem for me . Thanks for the post!
This did not work for me on my samsung focus running through straight talk. Any ideas would be appreciated as I still cannot send MMS. Thanks!

[Q] Data Connection Time-outs

I've been having data connection issues for as long as I've had an activated Straight Talk SIM in the phone (about a week). Here's what's happening:
When I open an app or program that needs an active data connection, more often than not, data takes a while to start flowing. Often more than long enough for my screen to time-out before it connects. I have moderate signal strength, generally 2-3 bars, and the little H+ icon is there, so I'm assuming it's not a signal issue. Once data actually kicks in, it generally works fine for whatever time I'm actively using it. However, once i stop using it, and let the phone go back to sleep, it's a crap-shoot as to whether or not it'll connect quickly next time I need it to.
It doesn't seem to be a ROM-specific occurance, although it did seem a bit less likely to time-out when running stock Froyo. I've tried several different costom ROMs, a handful of different modems, and it never seems to make any real difference. I've also tried slight variations in the APN settings, to no apparent avail. Toggling airplane mode and/or rebooting don't seem to have any definite effect either. Sometimes data will connect quickly after a toggle/reboot, sometimes it makes no difference. It's like the phone just doesn't seem to 'know' that it's supposed to be transferring data.
Im having the same issue. My first month with ST was great really fast of course I went well over 2 GB so it slowed me down towards the end of the first month.Well I paid my next bill and still slow. They seem to be clueless when I call them oh your using an Infuse well I ordered the correct sim from there site they still clueless.Ive have tried about every rom out there just to see whats up and still the same issue.Hopefully someone here has the fix.
Im having the same issue nothin seems to work.

Turns out we're not the only ones..not by a long shot:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...t-Talk-has-upped-the-ante-on-throttling-users!
Since it's a frustrating exercise in futility to actually call and hope to get one of their script-reading robots that can speak some semblance of comprehensible English, I emailed them on their FB support page and started a claim ticket. Got the usual runaround about removing the SIM card and battery, do a hard reset, clear cache and cookies from browser, blah blah blah. It's kinda funny how I linked the CS rep to that thread on HoFo, and she's still not acknowledging that there's any type of widespread issue. SSDD with Straight Talk.
I just registered over on HoFo and was looking around their Straight Talk forum. I think someone may have found the answer to some of our data connectivity woes. It may be as simple as having to make a DNS change to compensate for an overly-crowded network. I downloaded DNS Changer from the Play Store, and changed my DNS settings to OpenDNS. It's a bit too early to tell if it's just random coincidence, or a real fix, but I AM getting much better connectivity so far. For some reason, it seems to work a little better if you actually use the ST proxy in your APN settings.

This issue was driving me nuts, it started as soon as I switched to Jelly Bean, I was convinced JB was interfering with my data, installed DNS changer and immediately my internet issues went away. Thanks for the tip! :highfive:

Notification delays, orange icons, and poor data connection

My apologies if this has been posted elsewhere. I found a loosely related thread on google's support forum, but nothing here.
Bought a Nexus 5 and I've been trying out Straight Talk ATT and I've been noticing these problems, most likely all related:
I've been getting notification delays for push data services. Namely, my work email(exchange) and gmail. Sometimes the notification won't even come through. I'm up to a half hour on my last one, still waiting on it. SMS works just fine. Haven't tested MMS, particularly because I don't get many of those. The data connections does work though. I can manually load pages just fine, if a bit slow at first like the ping is astronomical. Almost makes me think it's establishing a connection each time.
When I check the color of the wifi or cellular connection icon, it's frequently orange. Most of the time it will quickly resolve itself to white in the few seconds it takes to check it. From what I understand, orange means it's having trouble talking to google services? This shouldn't affect exchange notifications.
I'm getting poorer connections quality than I expected. I live in Ithaca and while my home has poor Verizon connection(so I expected similar from ATT), I've barely found any place at work or the mall that can hold ANY LTE signal or a decent HSPA signal. HSPA speed tests give me under 0.5mbps up/down, while the only LTE test I've been able to run gave me 2.5/1 up/down.
The aforementioned thread on google's forums mentioned flashing 4.4.0's radio apk, has anyone else tried this?
Which APN setting affects the data part of the connection? Is it just the APN type?
Bump.
I'm starting to wonder if my problem is exacerbated by my current postpaid VZW phone getting data notifications much quicker. I'm suspecting that Straight Talk has a lower priority on ATT towers, thus why my data notifications take up to minutes sometimes. Anyone know of a way to confirm this?
Always On Push Notifications android app
I am not sure if anyone is following this thread anymore, but I switched to StraightTalk about a month ago, and have been experiencing huge delays in my google voice notifications as well (among other things). I've tried several different apps to get this resolved, but none have worked for me... so I decided to write my own. It was published to the google play store this morning (Android 2.3+ currently). If anyone sees this, please try it out, and let me know what you think.
It's called "Always On Push Notifications". I can't post a link right now because this is my first post on these forums though.

I am not sure what you mean, but I was noticing similar issues with my Nexus 5 on ST using ATT towers. While on LTE at the office, my connection was always great, but if I wasn't actively using my phone, my cell signal would go orange, and all of my notifications were significantly delayed. Furthermore, even trying to browse the internet with an orange signal would just idle and sometimes would not complete at all.
The app I wrote attempts to prevent this by simply keeping your connection active. It does this by manually sending out a heartbeat using the Google Cloud Messaging service approximately every interval that you define in the app. This helps keep your notifications flowing. On top of that, the application will also make a very small data request (~60 bytes), to help prevent the APN from timing out your connection.
I have found that those two things are enough to fix the issues I have had with StraightTalk.

That answered it. It must be a StraightTalk thing. Weird.
New observation on this problem:
- GMail notifications not arriving
- When I check I see that the WiFi icon is orange
- Phone is still connected to the internet, I can browse, but icon remains orange and no notifications arrive
- Only when I disconnect/reconnect Wifi does it recover
I also discovered that the WiFi icon actually turns orange at the moment that Google tries to send me a notification. It can be fine for hours before that.
It turned out that this only happens when I have the cellular radio turned off, by turning on Airplane Mode and then turning WiFi back on. With the cellular radio on and connected to the network, even with Mobile Data turned off, everything is fine with WiFi.
I think it's an authentication bug with Google Services. Somewhere in the message notification sequence it tries to either authenticate your phone or perhaps locate it via the cellular network, and if it fails then the connection to Google Services is flagged as faulty. The failure could be caused by having the cellular radio off, or perhaps by being in a bad reception area.

mobile data connection and openvpn?

Openvpn is working fine with WiFi connections, but nothing comes through on a mobile data connection. The app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn) shows a successful connection. Running stock 7.1.1 NMF26O.
Has this been an issue for anybody else?
Hello,

I googled and found this thread. I'm having this same problem except on a Pixel XL and the same OpenVPN client. I'm in Canada on Telus LTE
Did you setup your Pixel as a new device when you got it or did you transfer settings from another phone? I'm wondering if that's the culprit for me. I transferred settings from my 6P to my Pixel XL and I can barely connect to any of my VPNs via my LTE connection now. Sometimes they'll work for a few seconds, although very slowly, and then just die.
Now I'm considering wiping the XL clean and starting over to see if it fixes it
Hoping someone else has had this issue and has come up with the fix.

I've set it as a new device and used the option to reinstall the apps I had on another phone (Nexus 5X).
Funny thing, I'm also with Telus. That said, I want to exclude it as being the culprit. I also have a OnePlus X (running Marshmallow) and when I put my SIM card in it, the VPN works flawlessly.
My problem is a bit more weird than yours, though. I can connect to my VPN (and stay connected), but I can't access any services on my Synology NAS (where the OpenVPN server is set up). I can ping every devices on my LAN, including the NAS. I read on the Google forum that some people were having difficulties with IPSEC and the Pixel. Google said it was fixed and we just need to wait for it to be released (Feb. Security patch, maybe??).
I've spoken with Synology's support, but they don't acknowledge the problem being on their side. I've also set a L2TP VPN and no luck...
I am able to use OpenVPN on LTE no problem
I have no problem using OpenVPN to my own VPS server.

I think I may have found the problem although it's till early when it comes to testing it. I've only been messing around with it for a few minutes. So far, I can now load everything I couldn't prior to this.
I still want to pop my sim card back into my 6P to see there's a difference in settings. Since we're both on Telus, I'm hoping I have found the cause.
The problem may be stemming from ipv6. I noticed my XL was getting an ipv6 address from Telus whereas my 6P never did. Or at least, I never noticed. So, I went into APN settings on the XL and under the APN Protocol setting, I changed it to ipv4. I saved the APN and then let the phone reconnect to the network. Now, so far, everything seems to work.
It's possible it's an openvpn routing issue with ipv6 so there may be a setting there that can be changed instead of our APN settings but I'm not sure. Maybe you try it out and see if it helps you as well.

I can't seem to be able to modify any settings of the pushed APNs... One is named TELUS ISP and the other, TELUS SP. I've also tried to create a new APN following settings from TELUS (https://apn-canada.gishan.net/settings/1620_3_telus_mobility_apn_settings_for_google_pixel.php).
How did you do to modify the pushed APNs??

I had that issue too. Honestly, I'm not sure what triggered it but I selected the Telus ISP APN. Then I changed preferred network type to 3G. Then I eventually changed it back to LTE and somehow the Telus SP APN was now modifiable.

Trouble with data connection when mobile

Hi all,
Starting to get frustrated with my 3a and looking for avenues to address difficulty in maintaining a data connection when on the move. In all other ways this phone has been great.
When I am on the move - on the train, or in a car - my phone seems to lose data connectivity after a period of minutes. It seems to be an issue with maintaining a data connection when switching from tower to tower (at a guess). The phone does maintain mobile reception and I can be on a call without dropouts, but if for example watching a video, the video will stop, and eventually I will get the little cross in the reception icon to indicate no data connection.
No issues when not moving about, but am currently doing a lot of work on the fly, so hotspotting or conference calls are near impossible. This didn't always seem to be a problem, but due to Covid (and not moving around for a while), not sure exactly when it started. Have done some googling and tried a new sim card + changing private DNS settings with no luck. On the latest available update.
Is this a known issue with this phone? Any way I can diagnose or fix? Or am I looking at a new phone at this point?
Have rooted and switched ROMs on many previous phones, so quite happy to go down that path if need be.
cheers
I understand you say this only happens when you are moving but I would recommend checking with whatever carrier anyway maybe look on your carrier help site and write your same post here there and see if anyone else experiences the same. I would also save everything to USB or PC and flash factory image via fastboot and let it wipe not removing the fastboot -w in the./flash-all.sh. You could use an app like LTE discovery and set it to where you know exactly what it's doing and when it does it because you can set a small beep sound or wherever. What carrier do you use? Maybe update roaming , prl and profile, if you use a CDMA carrier. Also what type of case are you using? Just a few things that I thought of after reading your post here. You've probably already done all this but if not that's definitely what I would do. And last but certainly not least, are you using a custom rom or stock? Maybe check your/apns-conf.xml/ aka your apns and make sure they're correct and all for your carrier. I don't think you have to worry about apns unless you are using a custom rom in which case I would definitely check it out because sometimes they can be not right. I use Metro by T-Mobile and I'm located in the USA.
If you are on a custom rom you could try the old apn fix and just see if it's apn related... Wouldn't hurt anything.. Just save your current /apns-conf.xml/ and delete the apns-conf.xml file in your /system/etc/ and in /system/product/etc/ and replace the one in /system/product/etc/ with the one i link here and set permissions on it to 0644, then go to settings on your phone /networks and internet/ mobile networks/ scroll to bottom there and select access point names. Should be a lil three dot thing in top right and when you hit that select "reset to default" or "reset to default apn" and wait another 60 seconds or so then reboot. That will replace your apn configuration file. My file is recently copied from my last custom rom where everything worked fine and I had no issues. If this somehow is related to an apn outa wack then this will fix it. I learned this back years ago on another device forum from spaceminer here on xda. I've used this many times since and it's always worked. Again you don't need to do this on stock , only if you are using a custom rom. I believe stock is good.
