first i gotta install the kernel or rom? - General Questions and Answers

hey guys 2 days ago i just bought HTC sensation and its an amazing phone!but i have a question...i flashed my phone to S-OFF and modifed recovery..
so ihave seen lots of roms to download with kernels but the thing is first i gotta install the rom itself and then kernel?or first i gotta install the kernel and then the rom?
thanks!

ROM then Kernel, reason being is the kernel comes bundled with the ROM. That being said, flashing a kernel isn't necessary. You can try them out and see which one you like best, but usually the best kernel for a ROM is the one that was made for it.

thanks buddy!

[Q] Updating Kernel

I was just wondering that if I am going to update my kernel is it necessary to re-install the rom or do I just install the zip with clockwork and away i go? I've searched the forum and couldn't find anything regarding it, I would appreciate the help! Thanks.
you can just use CWM to installed the kernels without installing the rom but there might be some compatibility issues, so check before doing it.
Ok because the reason I'm asking is because I have SupeAosp with the Trinity kernel but I'm thinking on either upgrading for Trinity 12 to 14 or trying out James Bond Kernel and I thought that there might be some prep work involved.

just flash the newer kernel on top. be sure its compatable with the rom. if you do have issues, just reflash the rom(that will bring you back to the roms "stock" kernel).
In this case you can test out different kernels but make sure you have the trinity kernel file in the root folder in case which ever kernel you do flash doesn't work out.
In such a case you would just boot into CWM and re-flash the morfic kernel.

Thanks for the insight, I look forward to testing out many kernels!

[Q] Kernel Help? (2.6.35.7-g8f2a88c-dirty)

Hey guys!
I recently got a Rogers captivate (I896) and have been playing around with it lately... Currently it is running CM7... I followed these steps to put Cyanogenmod on my phone (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide) I've been reading up on kernels, and am pretty interested in changing the kernel... But when I checked the kernel, i had a kernel named 2.6.35.7-g8f2a88c-dirty [email protected] #1... I did some searches but it came up empty... What is this kernel?
I've been looking at Glitch, hoping that it would improve battery life...
Thanks for helping me identify!

With a few quick searches it seems that that kernel is the one that CyanogenMod uses as the stock kernel, I don't have CM7 on mine but take a look in the dev forums and you can see other kernels and read a little about the differences. Then choose the best one for you. And if it turns out it isn't the best one for you flash another.

KK, thanks... I was wondering why it was like that... Does installing roms influence kernels? It shouldn't right? When I followed the instructions it said I was installing the SpeedMod kernel...
Well, thanks for your help! Now I need to look for a different kernel... My battery life is only around a day, if i let it idle.... Thanks again!

Your welcome and hit the thanks button. As to your other question most roms will come with their custom kernel cooked in some will use the stock kernel but almost all roms will change your kernel when you flash something new. Kernels and roms are completely different things but you can't flash a ROM without a kernel. But you can flash a new kernel without flashing a new rom. Just make sure that you read read read. So that you don't end up bricking your phone.

you need to flash the radio only because kernal is already integrated but if you want a kernal which can let you overclock more then 1.56ghz then you can flash another kernal but mike kernal is more than enough to power this beast phone.
and can you write your experience about this rom i would say next sunday will be good because i was thinking of ipdating my rom

No you do not have to flash the radio. The radio is tipocally only flashed with Stock ROMs and official update ROMs because it is really seperate from the ROM and is basically programming for the certain hardware feature like WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular connections, and partially the camera. Anyway custom ROMs do not have Radios with them as they are not needed to b included in the ROM to allow it to flash. Also cause if you screw up the radio you get a hard bricked device.
The kernel in part of the boot.img file in as ROM to be more percise it is the z.img. So when you flash the ROM you flash the kernel for it too.

any idea with i am stuck at google logo after flash GlaDOS with brainmaster's MIUI ?

yes , i did reply in GlaDOS's post , but looks like i've been ignored ...so i have to post here see if anyone could help me with it ...
i was using FRANCO kernel , and then flash GlaDOS both BFS and CFS and 2.2 and 2.3 version , all stcuk , fine , first of all i figure it could be problem due to residual file of FRANCO kernel
ok , then i just flash whole new MIUI ROM with everthing wipe and then flash GlaDOS , but still stuck ...
any idea ?
thanks in advance...
and Merry Christmas to all
Which version of the ROM and kernel?
If you flashed ICS ROM, then it should be OK to flash GLaDOS 2.x. But if you flashed GB ROM you cannot flash the current GLaDOS kernel.
................kidding me ???
i throught there is GlaDOS for 2.3.X ROM ???
You can't flash a ICS kernel on Miui gingerbread base rom, its gonna get stuck. You need to flash an ICS kernel on a miui ics base rom or whatever ics rom your gonna use.
Try this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397393
Good Luck !
Wow, so you really flashed an ICS kernel with a GB rom??
Best practices for modding your phone:
1) ALWAYS backup your existing setup before flashing something new.
2) Read, research, read again about what you are doing before you do it. The last thing you want to deal with is a truly bricked phone, especially since it can almost always be avoided.
Not trying to come off as a prick - just trying to save you from a lot of unnecessary grief.

Nope
There is GLaDOS for GB, the latest version is 1.12, which is not in the OP anymore, but you can find it somewhere in that thread.
well yes ics kernel to gb rom, this is kinda embarrassing, i saw other kernel has 2 separated threads or 2 versions so i thought same to glados ....
and thanks for concern and advise, my phone wasn't bricked, I am still able to enter recovery or fastboot, once get there I can pretty much deal with most problem I have encountered

[Q] Best kernel to go with Android Revolution HD 3.2.1?

I'm not terribly good with kernels, and the only thing I understand is that if I have a custom one, I can overclock on SetCPU and do a few other things. I have ARHD 3.2.1 right now, but I don't know how kernels really work.
Sorry if this is a bit of a nooby question, but I am a noob C:
Thank You.
Try TastyMeh (in my signature)
Or Guevors test kernel (dev forum)
Both are similar, have awesome fixes, and oc to 1.7Ghz
You just got to try them out. Every unit is different so what may work for me might not work for you. +1 for guevors. 11b tends to still work best for most people.
Sorry for abusing this thread for a noobish question.
I was on stock ICS, rooted and installed guevor's test13 kernel for a while. Then switched to test15.
Yesterday I downloaded Full Wipe Script and Revolution ROM from dev thread, and used them:
1. Full Wipe
2. Install Revolution
My questions are ...
* Which kernel do I have now?
* Did the ROM installation change the kernel to the one that is included with the ROM?
* Maybe the ROM doesn't include a kernel, so I am still on test15?
BTW, I already checked on system info but I wasn't able to extract any useful info from that. I think that now I am using whatever kernel Revolution includes, but I am not sure.
Thanks in advance.

It will be the stock kernel that comes with the rom. Flash the test kernel again if you want it.

Thank you very much. I'll keep the stock Revolution kernel for a while.
