Anyone know of a reliable app for tracking communication activities? For example, collecting all text, email, and calls to a particular contact. Any suggestions would be very useful. Stock thunderbolt non-rooted
I can't see a use for this. Any examples?

And the time stamps for text messages, the call history, email time stamps isn't enough accurate documentation? Use sound recorder to record the conversations and you have record of those, the filenames are saved in the date & time format.
Seriously, look at your original question, the phone already does everything that you are asking it for. You make it sound much more like you want to snoop on a S/O, than "keep accurate documentation"
Not true but I understand the suspicion. I work for a Disaster restoration company, ie floods, fires, storms etc. Negotiations between clients and insurance providers can be very delicate and for liability reasons, need to be documented beyond reason. The phone has all of these features true, I was just looking for an app that centralized all communications in order to make it easier to sort through what can sometimes be 3 or 4 hundred contacts.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but as an IT manager...text messages should NEVER be used as a record of conversation.
Email is best, it leaves a trail.
There are ROMs/Kernals out there that support phone call recordings.
You can pull those audio recordings off and put them on a CD/Network Drive, etc.
But as for an all in one app...probably not. I haven't run across it anywho.
Thanks for the tip on recording the calls, true about text. Please forgive the confusing questions, I'm new to this, and not entirely sure of phones capabilities. Thanks guys.

Hi. There's a few call recording apps in the market but IMHO none are that great, and most of them haven't been updated for 2.0 yet. With N1 hardware is it possible to build a better, solid app? I do a lot of interviews over the phone (am a researcher) so something like this would be golden.
isnt this illegal? oo, unless you tell them the conversation could be recorded.
I was using Air Voice on the HTC Hero, and as said, it is broken on Android 2.x.
I am so looking for this kind of app on the Nexus one.
Google Voice can do it, I think... See here. I just read through it, but I'm not exactly sure what the restrictions are. Basically you just press 4 during or before your conversation, but a note at the bottoms says:
"Note: at this time you can only record calls you receive on your Google Voice number. You can't record calls you initiate using our Click2Call from our website or the Return Call feature from your voicemail."
But it doesn't mention anything about if you place a call using your phone. I don't know if this helps you any, unless you make the interviewer call you first
Ultimate Voice Recorder v2.3.4 Will get 'er done.
Tasker also will do the trick. It's not in the Market yet [get it here] but it was one of the top three utilities in ADC2. It's like Locale on steroids. Takes a bit to get used to but it's amazing
Thanks for the input.
1) Google Voice only records on calls made to you GV number. I'm not really using GV yet (except for voicemail), and most of the calls I initiate.
2) Ultimate Voice Recorder -- not clear to me its been upgraded for Eclair. I've contacted the developed, but we'll see -- its reviews are middling.
3) Tasker. Wow, I've just downloaded it, and don't know about its recording capabilities, but everything else, damn, it could change a lot of the way I use my phone. Thanks for that rec!
The way tasker is worded it sounds like it only records your outgoing voice.
+1 on Ultimate Voice Recorder
I believe the problem is Android does not let you intercept the incoming audio during a call. I'd love to see a framework change for rooted phones that would allow this. After all there are plenty of countries that don't think its odd for you to be able to record your own conversations with someone.

If you have Verizon or AT&T, maybe you can ask the US Gov't for all your conversations. They record all of them and store them in a US data base and have been doing it since before 2000.
Tmobile was the only one who said ..."Warrant please".
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I still haven't forgotten.

I didn't realize that about T-Mobile. That racks up points in their favor for me too.
is this possible? are apps able to access the incoming/outgoing audio in phone calls? that's the biggest hurdle i can see in making this happen.
i'm no programmer...so write off that last comment as me being naive if it is. but this is something i need right now...i went to the market to find an app but all of them just say they can send faxes. they let you take pictures of the document, even convert them to PDF or other types, and send them from your phone. why not receive? millions of small business owners/operators could use this...who needs a land-line and fax machine when it can just come to your phone...right?
Please tell me this is possible....if not, i will be crushed. haha. dude - there's credit card readers that plug into the 3.5mm audio jack to take a payment...why not this?
oh...and FIRST!!
Prepare to be crushed....
It requires a modem.
hardware, no ****, modem? or could we emulate a modem and run software in it to give the app the ability to do this?
There are internet-fax providers - i am sure you can team up with one of those to use their services through a phone app

I wanted an application that could do this but all I could find was the one from blueAnt which only works with their specific bluetooth device...
You could use Tasker and use this profile - price looks high but it's VERY powerful once you know what you're doing.
Comes with a trial mode for around seven days.
+1 for Tasker. Brilliant app.
I have my 'in car' profile set to read texts - on text receipt it pauses the music player, then reads the senders contact name, and then the body of the text. Awesome.
i was planning on getting the blueant Q1 (just found it for $25). are you saying it won't work with handcent in reading a txt message?
edit: forget it...answered my own question by going to their site. "Hear text messages read aloud on your Q1 when connected to an Android device with our Android application."
What about the vlingo application. It has an email and sms reader that reads the message out loud when activated, but I haven't managed to get it to read the message through the Bluetooth headset

SMS Speak
Just stumbled across this thread looking for something else. But thought I'd chime in. I use SMS Speak (the paid one, not the free one - two different companies/products), and it works great. I can get incoming texts and reply, all orally. I'm curious about the other products mentioned, though...

Wondering whether I am the only one with this issue
I SMS a lot and like keeping the SMS on my device. I had recently an extremely unpleasant surprise: my total list of conversations was back to... ONE conversation with my last SMS and... That's it!!! Thousands of SMS gone
I happen to save everything with mIQ and hopefully it's not lost. However I had the experience already twice in the past 2 weeks so I am wondering:
Is this a feature from Android? Big SMS file --> autoarchive? If then how do I disable it or how do I recover my SMS?
Is it a bug? In which case this is extremely severe and not serious for such an expensive device or for an OS that is expected to be a safe one
Is it from Samsung implementation? Or Android itself?
Please share your experience, I'd like to know if I am the only one and if there is any solution (My "old" Touch Pro 2 with WM 6.5 never lost a single SMS although having more than 30,000 SMS in the box)

you really shouldnt keep that many sms around anyhow with android, its likely to cause some issues but did you check the settings on the sms app? mine has settings to delete threads after a certain number and is set to 200 by default.
I use a program called Backup to Gmail. Works excellent.
It let's me delete sms'es on the phone while my Gmail account keeps them all even if I delete them on the phone.
It can also restore sms'es.MMS restore is not supported yet but backup works good.

Yes of course... Besides If I had it set at 200 I would expect to keep at leats 200, not 1
I shouldn't let many with Android ? So with WM6.5 it's ok to have 20,000 SMS but Android cannot handle them ? Hum... Somethng is seriously wrong

Thanks, I know a few of these. Without being able to restore --> kind of useless for me... Actually as far as I remember some CAN restore
I am already using mIQ that works ok (though a bit slow to handle too many SMS)
why would you even want that many, its not like you are going to read through 20k sms
It's funny like the answers are more about having less SMS or why wanting that many rather than why the SMS client or the OS Re broken...
Hey man why do u need a car, just take your bicycle!
I have more than a thousand conta ts I converse regularly with. Then add a certain number of sms per conversation and u get there
Anyway I do not even have that many on my Tab... Far less than on my previous device. And this disappointing device/os/client combination cannot even manage them... What do you expe t me to do or say? Go back to my TP2? Honestly this is ridiculous
meanwhile I'd like to know if I am the only one and if someone knows some fises (other than delet my SMS or but an iPad...)

give handcent a try and use their backup service, ive never had a problem with the stock sms app, currently theres around 300txts for 20 contacts, and 50 or so for the rest.
No problem here as I don't keep a lots of sms. But had a problem with new sms going into the wrong contact profile. So, have to be extra careful not to reply to the wrong person.
Anyone faces the same problem?

Deleting would help more than the purchase of an iPad, as that uses the 3g chip to get a data connection, while both the texting and voice service are ignored.
That said... I never got this issue, but my brother has a relatively similar one: long messages tend to be split, mixed and (why not, since we are at it) partly deleted. That is on Eclair using an Xperia X10 mini pro.
Never had this kind of issue when i was at my peak of sms usage: store on the MMC, and there you go, thousands of sms on a puny Nokia 3650.

Hi all
My son 13-year-old must submit his phone to me every night. Is there any software that I can read his SMS event if the SMS were deleted?
I will appreciate all your ideas and advices.
Here's an idea, give your son some privacy.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Even tho I agree you should give him privacy and build trust with him, I'll help you out.
You could get a app (not sure of name) that makes a nandroid of every thing (including SMS) and have it set on a timer to do so. So at a random point in the day it will backup everything in it and restore it quickly to see what's up, then unrestore. (Maybe titanium backup?)
If his phone is rooted you can easily do it with the app called undelete.
Im a parent I get it. But I think you're going to far and invading their privacy which will cause he or she to rebel big time once they find out...and make no mistake your kid will find out.

Protecting you child by giving him no privacy...
Besides if he wants to hind something from you he will, your options have been given, but then again he could prevent any of them if he wanted or just delete messages as soon as he has got them so at the most you get a couple
Hey guys, don't assume anything about the OP's reasons for asking the question.
Maybe his son has had bad habits or "friends" that no "real parents" would like their sons to ever meet.
He asked a technical question (giving the reason why and he could have just asked the question "as is", which would be my advice for any of such question in the future) and if you don't want to answer it because you think it's "bad", well, don't answer it, but please, keep your remarks for yourself.
If you want to discuss about parenthood and the like, there are forums dedicated to such subject. xda is a technical site, so let's keep it technical)
The nandroid backup is a good idea .
Another one
If your career allows you to get your messages, sms, mms, and even voice mail by email (in some unified messaging system or even with IMAP), you could use that. Usually, the messages are NOT deleted from the messaging server when they are deleted from the phone.
My own career provides such a service.
I think we are done here.
Thanks.
