[Q] HTC Desire S Help! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi everybody, i'm new to all of the Android phones and rooting but i have experience in Jailbreaking iPhones so im not new to hacking phones.
I'm getting very confused about a lot of things to be honest, and wonderd if anyone could help me.
What is the point in rooting?
Do i need to take the "S" of my HTC Desire to be able to root it? If so how do i go about this?
Next, is how do i go about rooting my Desire S?
This is all confusing compared to the iPhone, any help/Tutorials will be very appreciated.
Sorry if this has already been posted or if anything similar has been posted.

Please check the forums for your device.
Welcome to XDA. My advice would be to read all the stickies in your devices forum. Android is a lot more complex then the IOS your used to. Root is giving it admin access.
The search plugin us a powerful tool. Do a Google search for Xda search plugin and you will fund it. Sorry am mobile or I would link you.

[Q] Rooted, what's next?

I've been browsing the xda-devs forum and been Googling quite a lot about rooting, and recently just took the plunge to root my Wildfire with Unrevoked.
Now that I've rooted, what can I do next? I've been through quite a bit, and I don't see any topic that lists out some examples for us root newbs to get started with.
I've been playing with Apple devices quite a lot, and I have the first gen iPod Touch which I have been active in jailbreaking and modding, but semi-retired ever since I got my HTC.
Would appreciate guidance from fellow forum members. Thanks. A list of things we can do with a rooted phone and guides on how to do it would be awesome.
First on behalf on everybody on XDA let me give u a big welcome . As to your question, there is a lot you can do with your newly rooted phone. You can find all you need here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=678 Hope you will find this link very handy.
PS: I used to have an iphone 3g also, i jail break it and unlocked it. But now i have a HD2 running android.

Thanks for the prompt reply mate. I've skimmed through those forums, but I can see that most of the topics are questions about this and that instead of 'guide' forums... so I thought it'd do us all good if somebody compiled a list of things we could do after our phone is rooted.
Sounds nifty, no?

[Q] New to XDA & Android OS

hi everyone, im new to XDA & also new to Android OS. I need someone who knows what they are doing to help me understand XDA & how the rooting process works.
any experienced rooters out there looking for a student??
What device do you have/ what specifically do you want to know about rooting and or xda
Far as learning what XDA is all about, this thread is a good place to start.
Welcome to the XDA community! I'm still relatively new to the Android OS as well, and my knowledge expands greatly by the day here. Really, the best way to learn XDA is to explore it all and read a lot before posting!
XDA is the resource to goto, to find out how to do stuff. However, don't shy away from using Google to familiarize yourself with the jargon used in the Android mod community. It is invaluable to know what rooting, bootloader, recovery, fastboot and adb mean, before attempting to modify your phone/tablet to something better software wise.
I haven't been around too long but I've successfully flashed roms on 3 phones if you need anything pm me. And I've done a little bit more but not much. My most advanced knowledge is making the hello world app with java lol. Good luck to ya and welcome.
The device specific forums are the best place to get rooting info for your phone. You'll find guides and wiki therein.
You might want to watch this guide to learn more about XDA itself:

[Q] Where/how to learn about general rooting?

Hey!
I'm a computer engineering student, and really interested in mobile devices.
Would like to learn more about rooting smartphones.
I don't mean how to root a particular phone. Put the case that Samsung releases Galaxy S III and noone rooted it yet, so you wanna do it yourself. What do you do? How do you start?
I'm looking for some general guidance here. Is there any place i can learn more about this stuff?
Any advice would be appreciated.
I think the xda' is a right place for you
google and xda, of course trial and error is the only true way to learn
Well thanks.
Can someone show me where to start?
I browsed these forums and found threads only about how to root particular phones. Like "download this stuff, copy it to somewhere and then do this".
I'd like to know how exactly does it work.
You get a brand new phone, noone rooted it yet. How do you figure out the rooting method? What are you looking for first?
I know it's a complex procedure, just looking for some hint on where should i start. Is there some kind of general guide here i missed?

[Q] Ready to root, Best learning resources?

I'm new to Android and this forum.
I've been using a stock Galaxy S2 a few months, now I'm ready to take it to the next level and learn how to root and modify Android properly.
I will be getting a Galaxy S3 upon release, and that's the one I'm going to modify.
I have lots of patience and a strong desire to learn how to do this right.
After doing a search of the forum, I didn't find a thread (perhaps I missed it?) that addresses a comprehensive way to do this.
Seems like many people are only looking for a quick solution. I'd rather spend the time and learn Android thoroughly.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rooting
I would recommend doing a you-tube search for your phone and how to root, after that I would also recommend looking at the rom you want on you-tube. Also look in the XDA developers forums on your phone that should also help you. If you are totally stuck do a google search that's how I rooted my phone with no prior knowledge

[Completed] [Q] HTC HD7 help please!

Alright so, here is what I am trying to do. I want to get the android OS on my HTC HD7. I just broke my phone (which was android) and had to revert to my old phone because I am a bit tight on money. Now I have seen forums where people have be able to load android onto a windows phone, like the HTC HD2 and I have also found a forum with all of the stuff for a HTC HD7. Now I realize you need ROMs and a few other things. I dont really know how to load all of the stuff on my phone or anything, the place I found with all of the information had no instructions it just said here is the stuff for it, have fun. I am not really a big fan of the Windows OS on phones, and would prefer Android any help please?
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The purpose of XDA Assist is to point you in the right directions. You're still going to need to do your homework. I found this which should help get you started, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024828 Also see this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-hd7 You can ask further questions in the Q&A forum
