I will start with saying I like the NOOB video I just watched.
Now onto business. I rooted my Charge Saturday with Gummy Charged 1.9.1, Voodoo lagfix, and SD card patch by Kejar using ODIN. I am running Gingerbread.
It ran fine all day Saturday and then Sunday evening the following problems set in.
1. I tried to turn off my phone, power off, and it would shut off boot right back up.
2. Upon booting back up the notification bar would loop between "usb connected" and "usb debugging connected" It kept going back and forth between those two notifications until I went to USB Setting and checked "ask on connection".
3. My phone would not charge or recognize a usb connection
I booted into recovery wiped the data and did a factory reset. After several times of that my phone now accepts a charge and recognizes when the usb is plugged in. However, problem # 1 and 2 still exist. Now it won't let my computer read the SD card while it is connected and the battery indicator is all over the board with it's readings.
I figure I will flash back to stock. I downloaded a charge.pit file and a samsung_charge_ED2_Full.tar.md5. That has turned out to be a fail as I get a "MD5 hash value is invalid" from ODIN
Well, I'm at a loss of what to do. I want to get it back to stock and see if it is still having problems. If so back to Best Buy with it.
I want to keep my phone rooted since it makes it a whole different beast.
I apologize in advance for details I likely omitted. I tried to search for these issues but I didn't find anything close.
Thank you!

Getting back to stock is a good idea, you can then start clean from there. A bad hash check means it was a bad download or corrupted file so just download it again and try again... Also I would suggest the all in one EE4 download as it's the most recent stock rom
blazing through on my VZ Droid Charge 4G
I downloaded it again from this link,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486
Same error popped up on ODIN.
I'm downloading ED1 to see if that will work.
I don't understand how this works for everybody but for some reason my phone gets an error.
If you can direct me to a different download that may be more reliable that would be great.
Thanks!
Grab the full EE4 Odin file here and restore. Don't forget to wipe data, cache and dalvik before you Odin.

I agree, you want to flash back to stock EE4. It has solved all of the problems I've had so far. Use the link above.

I downloaded the all in one file and I am ready to rock. One problem though, when I open up ODIN and follow the instructions when I click on PDA the file that you good folks directed me to is not an option. It only lets me select the CWM.tar file I used when rooting the phone:mad
Any way to work around this?
Thanks!

does it say .zip or .7z at the end? if so you need to unzip it with 7zip, inside should be the file you need... also for future reference odin will only work with .tar and .md5 files

Good eye for the inexperienced my friend. I used it to unzip the file and then I attempted a flash with ODIN and the exact same error came up. I unzipped the file I downloaded earlier today and the one that was linked previously in this thread.
I am at a loss still and my phone is mocking me (face palm in shame). If it is working for everybody else it should be working for me. I'm not a tech guy but I am a pretty slick mechanic so I know how to follow directions. Everything is gravy until the MD5 hash issue with a big red FAIL notification.
The only other option I can think of is to download the ED1 and try that. After that the only thing I can think of is to try to flash another custom rom and see what happens.

yeah a failed hash check or bad MD5 sum means that it was a bad download or a corrupt file
redownload it and if that fails too then yeah try other stock roms... also you put battery back in before starting the flash right? I know odin poops out sometimes unless its in
Another thing I thought of is....have you used your copy of ODIN before? Could be an error with ODIN. If re-downloading the stock EE4 still doesnt work, I would trying downloading the newest version of ODIN.

Flashing ED1 finally worked and for me back to normal. Did an OTA update when I noted it up. I still had the same USB problem but it got worse. Took it back to Best Buy and they took care of me and replaced my phone on the spot. Luckily I only had it for 2 weeks.
Thinking back plugging in the charger was really hard at first. I had to force it in. Likely something broke internally and caused the problem.
Now back to rooting my new phone.
I bow down to everybody's greatness and 1000 thanks for all of your help.
BTW the phone name Charge and a function of a phone as "on charge" really makes it a PITA to use search engines to get phone specific info and troubleshooting. I kept banging my head into a wall finding posts about charging problems. It could make a good episode of Sienfeld.
Hahaha! I agree. I have resorted to searching "droid charge" with the quotation marks....seems to help.
For rooting, I would suggest PBJ overclocked version kernel and Altered Beast 5. Super fast and great theme-age.
Droid Charge
0731 PBJ
Altered Beast 5
So I was on Gummy 1.8.1 and I chose to flash the Full ODIN package to 1.9.1...
The flashing failed in ODIN (Dnt know why, everybody said you can flash without a data wipe/reset)
Now it displays a phone and computer icon with a exclamation point in the middle, Everything else I try to flash fails, What is the safest way to get my phone working again?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486
I just tried that guide and Im still unable to flash any of those files...... Everything simply fails in ODIN, its heartbreaking......
Is there something Im severely overlooking? Should ODIN be the only program open when Im flashing? Redownload all the files? Im just tired of waiting only to see the red fail box -__-
Take the battery out and put it into download mode. Then start Odin flashing. As soon as it verifies the MD5 pop your battery back in.

The only thing we can really recommend is that you follow that guide to the T. There's not much else you can do aside from a) using a rear USB port if you're on a desktop and b) make sure you're using the stock cable your phone came with

Right now Im enjoying Gummy 1.9.1, thanks again guys
I've been trying to figure this out for hours...
I recently got a Charge (I also have an old Fascinate). and I'm trying to root it. It came out of the box with EE4. I primarily use a macbook pro, but have learned that I can't root EE4 with it. So, I booted up my old school desktop PC.
I can't get Odin 1.82 (or 1.3 for that matter) to recognize my Charge or my Fascinate. I've tried 4 different Samsung driver files, and the computer recognizes the phones in USB Storage mode just fine (telling me that the usb cable is working fine). I can transfer files and everything. And yes, the phones have the yellow road sign looking thing and say "Downloading..."
But when I put either in download mode:
USB device not Recognized.
One of the USB devices attached to this conputer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click this message.
Basically, acts as though no driver is installed. and when I click the message and go to Update the driver (while still in download mode), I went to C:\Program Files\Samsung\USB Drivers\, but there's tons of folders and non of them contain a working driver for download mode (I tried them all).
I don't care about the Fascinate. I only mentioned it because I thought there was something to neither phone working. And this is the first (and only) time I've tried to get Odin to work (ie. it hasn't worked ever).
I've searched all over the forums, internet, and soul trying to figure this out. I can't be the only one this has happened to. Or I'm missing something really fking obvious.
I'm on an old custom made desktop with an AMD 1700+ processor running Windows XP (not 64 bit).

the pc itself doesn't sound like the problem, at least not directly... the only things I can suggest would be to either try different USB ports, a different cable, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34782489/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_I510_v1.3.1900.0.exe (which is made specifically for the Charge), disabling any antivirus that may be installed (or running Odin as administrator), and making sure USB debugging is ticked off under 'development' in applications settings
thanks for the quick response, but unfortunately, i've tried all of those except for disabling debugging. and, sadly, that didn't do the trick.
i've tried all of the usb cables i own (about 7). i've uninstalled and reinstalled divers from every link posted, and rebooted after each time. i've tried all of my usb ports on my computer. i've even cleared out the usb history in regedit.
::sigh::

well if it was just the Charge I would say there may be a problem with the phone or somethings not being done right, I have heard of some people having phones (Fascinate mostly) that won't go into download mode for Odin but will work perfectly with everything else... however both phones not working seems to be some kind of issue with the pc or cable, but I couldn't say for sure as I'm not knowledgable on the hardware of android phones

If anyone is an ADB guru here they may know how to do it with that, like pushing CWM to the phone and then you can probably flash to stock... I only know how to do basic things like install apk's and logcat
I know with most phones, you can't go back without root because the system doesn't let you. I'm used to the Droid incredible and incredible 2, where rooting and flashing roms is easy as pie with some knowledge of adb and cwm. none of the ed01, ee4, fu69 stuff to worry about. Odin seems very easy, and its damn near impossible to permanently brick your phone if you have it. BUT I can't get it to work.
is there an adb / non-Odin root method for ee4?
if I understand correctly, the gingerbreak method and one click method don't work with ee4. (I've tried both of those too)

Your on Mac? Have u tried using heimdall?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
I've tried using heimdall on my Mac and can't get it figured out. heimdall 1.3 (older heimdalls like 1.1.1 wont open) requires a framework.XML file which Odin roms don't have. I can create one but the only way I can do that is by using a .pit file (which creates a partition) which I'd have to take from other rom files. the only way can see it working is by Frankensteining it together to get it to flash which does doesn't seem right.
I could be completely misunderstanding how to get it to work. I could just use heimdall in terminal, but I don't understand it enough yet to attempt. heimdall 1.3 looks nothing like the way I thought it would (where I select all the recovery, bootloader, etc files individually)

yes only for stock 2.2 because it is what reformats your partitions after they've been converted to ext4 with lagfix/voodoo
as for stock roms EE4 is the latest and hasn't given me any problems when Odining but I suppose the others like ED1 or ED2 would be fine
just bricked it.
I was trying to revert back to ed1 so that I could root from there with gingersnap / gingerbreak through adb
I downloaded the Verizon stock ed1 file and pit file, inserted all of the files in the correct place (param = parameters.rfs etc.) it got to uploading kernel and failed. now my phone boots into a picture of a cellphone then an arrow pointing at a computer with a yellow triangle with a !
and I have no way of unbricking it.
I'm going to borrow someone's windows laptop and Odin it back to health (hopefully)
then I'm returning it for a thunderbolt. this phone has driven me mad.

I flashed the 0817_charge_recovery.tar.md5. I didnt see that it worked and then went back into download, thru Odin, tried to flish cwm_Recovery4008.tar. Got a fail and now when i try to turn on it just shows an icon of a phone with a yellow triangle exclamation point between that and a computer icon. it still goes into download mode with volume down and usb connection but it wont flash the default VZW rom back.
Suggestions?
Battery in or out?
battery in = (phone) ... ! ... (cpu)
battery out = can still go into download mode
Did you come from another rom? I think if you want to flash back to stock from another rom via odin you need to also flash the pit file. At least thats what I had to do.

Are you keeping the battery out during the entire process? You're using the PIT too with the Re-partition box checked (unchecked Auto Restart and F. Time)?
I left the battery in cause in step 4b he says to but anyways it worked. the first time i tried i was using the ed2 file cause for some reason the ed1 link wasnt loading. then i realized i had that file already from somewhere else and used that and it went through

Right now, your best bet is to apply whatever system updates there are. If your phone doesn't get you up to EE4 on its own, then you should follow imnuts' instructions here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10202-how-to-prepare-for-the-gb-ota/
At some point today, someone will be able to confirm whether the update.zip (leaked) is truly 100% identical to the update.zip that Verizon is pushing out for EP4. If it is, then we'll be safe update to EP4 ahead of the OTA, root, restore any backups, and apply working EP4 themes. I'm anxiously awaiting the ability to depoop my phone--rolled back to stock EE4 last night and have hated my phone ever since!
Haha same. I returned initially for the same reason and then was so sick of it i pushed ahead and messed it up. Still haven't gotten the update tho

I can get into download mode.heimdall detects my phone. I tried both qksters and adam outlers 1 click. neither would take. If I upgrade heimdall version (as it tells me its out of date) it wont get through the initial connection to the phone. if I use with out upgrade it continues to fail on kernel download.

Let's step back here does out prompt you for drivers?
....you might have to make a stop at your office..
Try different USB ports, I used heimdall yesterday to go back to gingerbread (so I could get the boot loaders) and I had the same problem as you, I finally got it to work with a different USB port and even then it kept failing...but I just kept trying and eventually it went through
(Pull battery, place battery back in, hold volume up and down, plug USB in-should put you in download mode...even if you can't see anything on your screen you can still enter download mode)

Alright, here it is:
I encountered the same problems yesterday, heimdall doesn't work when flashing back to stock from ics, from what I've found, you must use gtg's ultimate unbrick, the pit repartitions everything and also resets your binary counter (cha-ching! ). Once completed, your phone will reboot and be stuck at "...installing default apk files..." for a few minutes, don't panic, let it run its course. From there on, you can do the usual root/flash cwm deal. .

I went back to stock from ics yesterday using heimdall...just took a long time and a lot of tries
I really think it depends on the computer though, for some Odin works best...for others heimdall works best

Agreed. On my desktop (quad core 6 gb ram, watercooled blablablabl) can't run heimdal nor Odin to save its life.
My netbook (single core atom) took me back from CM9 with Odin like it was nothing.
My 7 year old laptop (running Ubuntu) works great using Heimdal (just run the .jar file as an executable)

I did not mean to be misleading, as you both have said, either or may work, I simply wanted to share my experience

No ... understood..no worries...there are some many that have never flashed or much less read anything regarding flashing are having so many prob`s...when this ics it's still bring birthed...for the infuse.
Instead of going to the dev section and doing some home work...understanding the basic info....they see ICS and have pictures of Sunday treats....in their mind...having no clue about the current ROM they are on now...Then the questions pop up...from individuals...after wards yelling SOS...But hey it's their phone.

I've flashed lots of roms and never had any issues. Also looked through the forum and know the basics about getting back to stock. I'm no expert, but I have a decent idea what I'm doing. I do appreciate a forum you can ask questions though and have people help out when your stumped. I did what i could from the tools I have at my disposal here, and ran into some problems. I'm not yelling SOS, just asking for some tips as what I have tried hasn't worked. All the same I do appreciate everyones opinions and help they provide. THat's what makes this forum great.
why would you need to heimdall if you are on a rogers infuse? Isn't that for AT&T phones only?

Because I don't have access to a PC for Odin, and the at&t should work to get me out of brick state. I currently can't get past rogers boot screen
