I have to say after doing the updating in the store from my nexus i am very much unimpressed, if this is what dual core tegra phones are gonna be a like count me out. The screen looks great the ui is horrible and the thing is extremely slow and the touch screen is very unresponsive. The design seems different from the 1 I see on the sears website so I'm assuming there is a difference between the 2 for the screen. Any further input would be you wonderful though as I can't see spending 399 dollars on thhis. I have been thing is getting a galaxy tab but it seems like development is awfully slow on it

well... there aren't many people here that are going to disagree with you at face value. the UI is crap and it hinders this from greatness out of the box. The ad pictured in Sears is the wrong picture, Sears, Office Depot, and Staples are all carrying the same thing.
hopefully based on your post count and the fact that you own an N1 I'm sure you know why you are here. This is a solid device, just not out of the box. Go through the threads and you will hear the same thing.
If you don't mind (or actually enjoy) a little flashing then you will be good to go. the are instructions that have covered pretty much every issue that Viewsonic screwed up here.
Most of us went into it knowing we had a 30 day return policy and majority of us aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Once you flash it is speed it up tremendously or really not a very noticeable difference? Vs The galaxy tab what do you think is the better device. Can you install stock firmware
Most of the mods remove the TapNTap UI and replace it with a more familiar Android interface. And the latest mods have the newer Tegra drivers which boosts performance.
I would not go on what you see in the store. It's night and day with what the mods give you. But, the device still has flaws - some games don't work properly and the screen angles are not very good versus a Galaxy Tab.

If your feeling adventurous you could always bring a microSD loaded with TnTlite 2.2 and flash the floor model. Then you can see for yourself how good it really is

funny you should mention that. I actually had mine flashed before I was out the door of sears that first week it came out
But YES... the difference is night and day. I am a proud Galaxy 'S' Vibrant owner (AXURA 2.1, FROYO, with Front Facing Camera) and just didn't see the benefit of a 7" tablet over my phone for the money; had Samsung gone with a 10" it might be a different story. Paying for an additional data plan wasn't my cup of tea either seeing I can tether my tab wirelessly to my phone and I also have a ClearSpot MiFi router, I decided to try this route and I am very happy that I did.
Again, with a return policy you really have nothing to lose (except time well spent).
I never even tried to use it with the stock firmware. I flashed mine as soon as I got home. I saw the videos and knew I didn't even care about it at stock. I also enjoy flashing my devices. It is fun to kill some time. I am currently using the latest TNT lite. I love mine.
Well, the UI is fast and responsive once you install one of the modified ROMs. Stock TNT definitely sucks. The hardware itself is good - if you don't mind the moderately crappy LCD. That we can't improve in software.
Lots of hacking and alternate ROMs out in the less than a month this device has been on shelves. When we get source code from Viewsonic, expect even more.

I'm considering getting a new/first tablet. However, I'm not quite sure which one I want to get. I'm curious if anyone here has an android tablet or is getting considering one. If you do have one, what is it and how do you like it?
I'm looking at everything but currently the tablets I'm eyeing the most are:
- Transformer Prime: Sounds like a beast. I do worry it will be a bit expensive and I'm not sure when it will make its way to Canada. I'm also not sure I really even need that kind of power for what I want to do on a tablet.
- Motorola Xoom: Has similar specs to pretty much every other tablet on the market right now. It also will probably be the tablet with the most dev support for quite a while I imagine (until a "nexus" tablet comes out). +it's price point shouldn't be too bad at this point and it's scheduled for ICS update
- Xoom 2: Kind of like the design of this (even if the specs are only a small update to the Xoom). Problem is I have no idea if this will come to the states, let alone Canada anytime soon. Also seems kinda "blurified".
- Sony Tablet S: Available in Canada, but not sure how good of a price I can get on this (compared to the Xoom which has near-identical specs). I really like the design and am a big fan of Sony products in general.

Tablets are just as particular as phones. When you got your XT, I bet you thought it was the top of the heap. I did. Then I found out about all its little issues and problems, but also about the really good things it has. No way I could have known then. From what I can gather, tabs are the same thing. I have seen Galaxy tabs rocking it, but then in some people's signatures on XDA I see "Nook running CM7". In the states you can get a Nook for pretty cheep, easy to root and then put a stable CM7 on it a go with it.
Now RAM and memory are something I don't know anything about. Not even sure how much small RAM would be like our meager 256 on the XT. I actually would be interested in knowing that. With our current locked bootloader situation, I would stay away from the Xoom, even though I think there is a leak. I will never buy a Motorola again b/c of their user policies. I see the Bionic and actually laugh to myself b/c I already know it will be a locked bootloader (but the average person will think it is the best phone ever made. You know that most people don't even know what XDA, root or evena custom ROM is?).
Personally, my wife and I have talked about it and really don't understand the attraction to tabs. If you have a tab running CM7, with flash, email, skype,...it is extremely similar to just having a bigger screened phone. One caveat is that HP discontinued their global personal computer operations (now they are exclusive to technical management solutions- or some crap like that). But suspending their personal computer options does have one benefit for you and me. Their tabs dropped from $699us to $99/139us, but everyone with an online credit card picked one up a few months ago. Bestbuy just sent back all 250,000 they had in stock, so you might be able to still pick one up on the cheap (not android os though).
And finally, Rev is in one of my G+ circles and he posts a fair amount of tablet info, so you might want to PM him and find out his thoughts.

Actually, although it pains me to say this, the Xoom is a Google developer device and can be easily unlocked by users (i.e. it's like the OG Droid). I think you're thinking of the leaked Atrix unlock. I would assume Xoom 2 is probably wearing a chastity belt until proven deflowered.

Nope. I got mine quite a bit after it came out. I didn't really understand the RAM issues and other issues it had though... (was still pretty new to Android).
I would stay away from the Xoom, even though I think there is a leak.

It has unlockable/relockable bootloader and most likely the biggest developer community of any tablet atm and for a while (it's like a nexus phone I'd say).
Personally, my wife and I have talked about it and really don't understand the attraction to tabs.

I actually felt much the same way until recently. I do have uses for a tablet, though I've been thinking of the "it's a bigger screened phone" bit as well. There are certain things that I want to do that I can't do on the smaller screen of my phone (i.e. productivity stuff such as writing down lecture notes and working on essays, video chatting on a larger screen etc...). But some of the functionality on the tab is definitely duplicated by a phone. That's why I really love concepts such as the Padfone... (but that's not coming out for quite a while I believe...). I don't really love the idea of having both tablet and phone (superfluos in some ways), but I want something that combines the functionality of both...

My brother has the Asus Transformer and its a beast!! He has had it since day one and everytime I go over there I got to get my sticky lil fingers all over it. He bought the keyboard dock to which makes it twice as good + the full HDMI mirroring makes it awesome. Its also unlockable. He's running one of the newest prime roms with the o/c and there's no waiting for anything. Theres a pretty big dev comunity for it. Plus it has the ips display, which is the same as ipad. If I were you tho I'd wait for the quad cores.... then by a dual core, they will be way cheaper then.(hopefully) :/ lol who needs more than 2 cores in a tablet anyway.

I bought the Acer A500 when Walmart has them for $299 ($399 but you get a $100 gift card free), but my biased opinion says it is a bit on the big/bulky side. I felt that 10" is not very easy to handle given my small Asian hands. It is also not the lightest, and when I am reading in the bed my arm would get tired from just holding it up. Nonetheless even the Xoom or Galaxy Tab isn't that much lighter so I think maybe it's just me nick-picking.
Long story short I returned it but am very interested in the new 8.9" tab... That may be my sweet-spot on size. Same resolution screen, smaller/lighter to handle, but I will need to see how it's battery life fares.

I read a great review on Android Police about the Galaxy tab 8.9 and they said battery life was awesome. They hated on the touch wiz ui tho. They said it made everyday tasks sluggish.

Well, that's good to hear! I was secretly hoping the smaller screen will mean less battery drain (since I believe the 8.9's battery rating was lower). Regarding the UI... I can always wait for a custom ROM to show up here at some point! I just started playing with MIUI for my XT720 and I love it wwaaaaay better than any of the other UI I've used before. Gotta love the development community on Android!!

I know that's just like my opinion and stuff, most tech blogswill vote for 10.1tab or ipadpon 2 but we know which tab was the greatest of 2011 without a doubt. First honeycomb, first everything.
I own a Galaxy SII and a Xoom (MZ605, 3G + Wi-fi). I am extremely happy with my SGS2 and very disappointed with the Xoom.
The Galaxy is a much better android device than the Zoom. I know we're comparing onions to potatoes here, but if the Galaxy S II is any indication of what the Galaxy Tab is, then I regret immensely to have bought the Xoom instead of the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
The sgsII is imo the best phone out right now. Lack of sd card and plasticy back make the tab ten.one less desirable for me than xoom. It's just that the xoom came out way before the tab so I was basing my opinion on the fact that we have had much more experience with the honeycomb ui than most tab owners. Either way both tablets provided the best android experience available in 2011 and can't wait to see what next year brings.
I love my Xoom... to me it has been the best of the bunch in overall comparison for 2011, and it still has plenty of life in it. I would love my next tab to be a Xoom as well, but the new ones don't impress me.
I have now owned 5 tabs total including the "almighty" Galaxy 10.1 and the Xoom was the only one that didnt end up on Craigslist! The only thing the Galaxy had over my Xoom was the screen colors. Not enough to justify trading up though, i love my Xoom......
I live my xoom, but its too big for most tablets. Lots of then are so much smaller really thinner. I don't understand why this thing is so thick? But it does gave an sd card slot and that makes a huge difference to me, but the screens also kinds sucks!

I prefer the thick, heavy metal feel of the Xoom. I pick up other tablets and most feel like toys, don't really give something solid to hold on to. With all the features and the tank-like build I am sold. Coming from a Tegra phone it is also cool to see how cool the Xoom runs while under a heavy overclocked load. Just a real nice platform.
Some like their Phantoms, some like their Miatas. I'll keep my Rolls Royce!
The Xoom was the best to me because of speaker placement. When shopping for tablets I found the Xoom to have the best sound...bar none.

That`s exactly why I chose the Xoom over the GTab 10.1. I like the fact that I can simply upgrade my uSD card rather than have a device whose storage can't be upgraded.
I already bought a Class 10, 32Gb uSD card from DealExtreme.

I think the next xoom after the xoom2 will be really impressive. Probably sometime in April/may one year after most of us have had our of xoom they will come out with quad core,2560 x 1600 screen, 2gb ram, my wish list could go on but I mean tablets are so new that motorola should be able to get their act together and bring us another groundbreaking tablet like the og xoom.

I don't like the speakers on the back because when I try to listen to something by myself the sound shoots behind the tablet into other rooms, I would have liked front facing.
If you place something behind it or cup your hands around the speakers... even in a case, it sounds like surround sound.
I have an Sg2 phone....the best by far in my opinion. I also have a Xoom tablet which I also think is the best. The specs on the Galaxy tab fell short because of the lack of SD card. My other beef about android in general is the latency factor....as I understand it about 100ms v 10ish on an ipad. It's almost (though not quite) enough to make me go for an ipad

Might be a little thick and heavy, but with the OTG cable, SD slot after root, direct HDMI out, 32GB base storage, and typically the quickest OS updates I don't see how this wasn't the ultimate Android tablet this year. GED. Year end promise of ICS.
Samsung had some "wow" factor with it's thin sleek device, and it probably got more consumers considering Android than the Xoom. But there's more trade-offs with no expansion, no built in HDMI, multiple dongles. I agree with the less solid feeling on that tablet too. I always give phones and tablets a good bend test and the Samsung did not pass.

Neither did the original ASUS Transformer! I guess they have addressed that with the new Transformer Prime.

Agreed. Rooted, overclocked, Moray ROM and Odachi kernel. The best product I've aquired all year.
Lemme put this in some perspective:
I've had the Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a while now, it is actually one of the Google I/O Limited Edition ones so that meant I had a pure Honeycomb experience. That's what I loved most about it, and was excited about the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade expecting it to be pure ICS. Low and behold, i've been TouchWiz'd.
Now, I don't HATE it, but I don't LOVE it either, and have loved the 1920x1200 screen since I read about it, and love the dock option also. The question is, is it really worth the hassle of selling this if i'm going to get a pretty similar experience on the TF700?
Should I just hold on to this and run a custom ROM with the hopes of Jellybean in the near future (Samsung takes forever I know, not really the point) or should I just pull the trigger and sell it for a TF700?

Was in the same place as you - had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a long time. Decided to take the plunge and haven't looked back since. Infinity is in a completely different league than the GTab. After 24 hours with the Infinity, I sold the Samsung. :laugh:
Finally, a comparrision thread that isnt pure troll sludge! I was beginning to think these had gone extinct. But anyways...
You're the one who will have to make that call man, but there are plenty of advantages and this tablet is getting better everyday. I'm sure the ROM scene will explode in due time as it does with every decent device for the Infinity just like JB will see it's debut on the Tab. If you have the expendable cash, why the hell not upgrade. The fact that your here looking into it means you either have nothing else to do or you are genuinly interested and wanting to try it out. So go pick one up at Best Buy and play with it in store and see what you think. If its a fit, then cash out and run home with your toy. If your still not sure, then hold off for a week and revisit. Good luck in the decision and I hope to see you as a regular.
PS GET THE TABLET!
The only tablet i'd consider, and i mean consider because if its features and not hardware is the Galaxy Note 10.1
Anything else is not even a question i should ask.
i've just upgraded from the gt 10.1, still keeping my 8.9 though:laugh:.
here's my my quick take -
the screen looks a whole lot better than the gt b/c of the resolution. and, if it's important to you, the screen gets darker and is just slightly brighter than the gt. it's got a warmer screen (though in the past there were mutiple mfg's of the tf and xoom screen so results may vary) and the screen is just a bit more reflective tha the gt.
of course the tablet is faster and smoother with tegra3. netflix runs horridly slow unless you force gpu accelleration. i have no clue why it suck so bad there. i couldn't say whether it's netflix's, nvidias, googles, or asus' fault as i don't have any ics/t3 devices to compare to.
the digitizer is easier to see in the glass of the infinity. i barely notice them in the gt, but see them all the time on the infinity. not really much of an issue though.
one thing you'll gain is manufacturer support. just a few months and asus already had an update and announced JB. samsung is just now rolling out ics with no interim patches since. if it wasn't for the xda dev's i'd give up totally on samsung devices.
downside is asus lack of qc. on day one my tf was perfect. day four and i'm getting the bleed and the clicky left side. now i can live with the bleed as the situations that make the bleed noticeable aren't very common in my normal usage. i only fear that it'll get worse like my other transformers did to where it did show even under the lowest settings.
most likely i'll sell the gt and keep the asus. it'll only be around for a year so i think if any issues show up i can deal with them for that long... as long as it doesn't die... or if the galaxy note doesn't tempt me.

There are a few factors to consider:
1. I don't live in the US so I can't go to a B&M and even look at one. (living in Jamaica)
2. I'm gonna have to sell this here and i'll be using the cash from this to get it (tablet resale market is very good out here, have multiple offers of $500 for it)
3. My priorities are as close to pure android experience as possible and the higher resolution screen
Then i'm gonna have to find someone to bring it to Jamaica for me because customs would kill me shipping direct! I'd be looking at probably around $400 on taxes alone!

Hey everyone! Its that time of year where we get all these new bells and whistles! Hope everyone has a fantastic holiday!
Now down to business. I want a tablet! I have had many phones and i just want something big and something i can easily root and customize. I want to get a Nexus tablet just for the simplicity of vanilla android however im not sure which one to get! Like i said i want something BIG. I was looking between the 2012 and 2013 nexus 7's and to be honest just to save a bit of looty I would probably choose the 2012. I looked on swappa and found some amazing deals. And with the help of the might internet i was able to compare prices and see where it would be best to get a tablet. Now for the people of xda: Which tablet would you pick and which is the one that is best for a "first-time" tablet user.

I have an Acer Iconia A500 I bought as my first tablet about a year and a half ago, and truly loved it. I was big with a 10 inch screen and way better than my phone. Then about 3 months ago I decided to upgrade to a Nexus 7 2013 model.
The difference was outstanding! The screen is absolutely amazing! 1080p is ridiculously awesome! It was fast, light and this as well as so much easier to pack around. I booted up the A500 the other day and was kind of dissapointed of the lack of speed and clarity of the screen.
Overall if you find a good deal on the original model, I think that you will enjoy it. My friend has that model and she loves it and I don't think that it is all that bad. The only thing that I prefer the original model compared to the new one is the finish of the back and the thicker and rounder dimensions are slightly easier to grab. Might not be a bad way to jump into the tablet trend.
If you are willing to spend a little more, I would recommend the 2013 model just because of how crazy fast it is and how easy it multitasks and keeps all your apps open. I am running vanilla Android so I do not know much about the ROM scene, but I still love it.
Just remember that this is your decision and I believe whatever you choose, you will love your tablet!
