Facebook Contact Sync - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, just got my NS4G today and thought I had a good plan to overcome the lack of Facebook contact sync. Plan A - Friendcaster Pro and Plan B - Facebook Sync. Well, both have worked mostly. I get alot of contacts and pictures, but missing many. I don't think its due to the the friends having blocked 3rd Party Apps sharing their information. Because on my Samsung Galaxy Tab10.1 32GB wifi, with the newest Touchwiz update, I get all my contacts using Friendcaster. But Samsung also now has provided a FB sync with Touchwiz so perhaps it is filling in the gaps?
Regardless, if 1 app can sync the contacts so should another. So that rules out some friends with different settings. Anyone run into this? I know Facebook sync is an island in itself on the Nexus. But I am pondering of anyone has found a non root solution? I have all MAC so I don't have an easy way to root.
Thoughts?

OK, I realized the contacts synched... at least more than I thought. However I'm having to link alot of Gmail contacts to Facebook counterparts than normal.
I also have 1 contact that just won't find the FB counterpart.
Are there any apps to smart join Gmail and Facebook entries? It got alot of them with friendcaster pro. Just need last mile.

Facebook app

Which app do you advise ? The Samsung integrated in the Social Hub or the official one from the market ?
I come from a TP where I really liked HTC's integration of facebook in Sense. Not too invasive and living quite well with my exchange account
Right now my contacts in my outlook (2011) on my PC are linked with their facebook profile, and so are they in Sense. With my Tab I worry a little bit about putting a mess in a system that has found its balance
Any risk to duplicate contacts if I use the Samsubg app ? Or the Android app ? Will they merge properly with my exchnage contacts ? Stay aside ?
I just dont wnat to make the step to find out after I messed up my contact list (More than 1200 people so clenaing that up would take me a few days....)
Hi I use Facebook from the market and also use one called boo

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The built-in one is pretty much for synching only, any actual facebook viewing would need to be done via the browser.
I switched from the built-in SNS client to the official Facebook client and didn't experience any problems.

I haven't installed anything yet Not tryig to fix anything just trying to be sure what I'll do wont create troubles to my contact list
The built-in app is just meant to sync your existing contacts on the phone and match them with facebook friends ? Or it adds all the facebook friends ?
The official app doesnt do this ?
Don't get the account permissions confused if you install the market app. Its annoying to find you gave the stock app permissions that arent on the market app.

Both versions sync contact pictures etc. The official app gives you the option to sync pictures+status updates with all friends, just those with existing contact entries, or none at all.

Anyone ? Maybe I am making too much fuss about this but I dont wnat to mes up my exchange contact list...
Not 100% sure about this, but I don't think it will mess up any of your existing contacts.
When logging in using the official Facebook app, it will create a sort of 'profile' for all existing contacts -- it won't merge info with the actual contact. You'll see this when you edit a contact, there will be 2 (or more) tabs when editing the contact.
It's like a 'Metacontact' in Trillian wherein it's only a merged 'View' of a contact, but in reality the data is in separate 'profiles'. The Facebook tab is uneditable and will only display info.
The only problem I have so far is that when creating a new SMS, it will display -ALL- contact numbers and e-mail address of contacts, even if the number is exactly the same:
i.e. I have a contact named Bob Smith in my Google, Exchange and Facebook accounts, and they are merged as one account. In the Dialer, all the info is merged into one contact when displaying, but when editing, they are editable in 3 separate tabs.
However when I create an SMS and scroll to find Bob Smith, it displays all contact infos of Bob Smith, even duplicate ones, like if I have his number +123456789 on Google and Exchange and Facebook, it displays 3 same numbers when selecting a recipient.
Edit:
Also, when you sign out or remove the Facebook app, it will delete the Facebook 'profile' of the contact on your contacts list, maintaining the state of the previous contact before you logged in / installed Facebook.
Thanks a lot, that's good to know
I already saw the mess it was having google contacts and exchnage contacts (I usually maintain both... for 1200 contacts!) The worst is for contacts for which I entered only the first name... they happen to be all merged together (Well done samsung... They could have defined a merge key a bit larger than just the name........)
What about when you use the Samsung app ?? Someone knows ?

[Q] Social hub

Does anyone use the social hub on their note? I've been persevering as I like the concept, but I'm finding it a bit limited in functionality. e.g. no option to select multiple items.
Also it always opens on the feeds page, which I hardly ever use.
Is anyone else using it?
Yep I use it and love it. Have 5 email accounts, facebook, twitter and linkedin all in one place. Superb app
I am using it also it us great.
I didn't get your point about not able to select multi
I try to use it ! I think it's difficult to use in with de note. I also want to have e-mail first and not the fields page...
the scrolling on it is really slow. Anyone else get that?
no more using it...and set it to not boot at startup. laggy for me too
Only use is to check social updates from the Contacts
Is there a social Hub widget as I cant find it anywhere?
I uninstalled threw titanium backup

How is it?
I'd like to give this a test drive, anyone able to post up the latest social hub apk?
Seems it's not in the market now, and I'd frozen it when it first launched as I don't use facebook and other (anti)social stuff, but it might be worthwhile now I'm sync'ing work email so that I can use one app to handle work and personal email. I like how the default mail app does pinch-zoom which gmail lacks, so if social hub will do that and handle gmail the same way I'd be happy. After freezing it and then updating firmware the apk's seem to have gone so cannot re-install

Social Hub will use the stock email app for emails, so you can pretty set up your account there.
I'm not using it anymore since it consumes a lot of memory. Also, occasionally the account for Windows Live would suddenly stop working with no way to retrieve mails. Furthermore the extra things that it can do for emails can be configured in the stock email without it. Example, to use Hotmail, configure the server to m.hotmail.com as Exchange account. For Yahoo, configure it as imap. You get push service for both.
For social apps, since I'm using Facebook official app, I don't see why I need to set it up using Social Hub. Well the thing I hate the most is that I can't choose the default tab when I start it up.

thanks for the info, I was hoping to just have one app in the quick launch area for exchange/gmail/IM but maybe sticking with stock apps is a better bet then. Might look at moving the gmail accounts into this and dropping the gmail app instead.
Dave
I've been using social hub anytime now, it works fine. putting all accounts in one, easy to access emails and messaging the only thing is that, it eats more memory (allocating more memory to social hub0 with out actively using it.
frozen for me too

VZW GS3 - FB pics in contact book, but no where else?? Any fix?

I see tons of questions towards this, but nothing towards the particular issue I'm having. Just picked up the GS3 from vzw a couple days ago and getting everything installed and configured how I want. One major issue I'm having is that my facebook contact pictures are not syncing with any program in the phone.
I got fb contacts to sync with pictures in the contacts section, but no where else will the pictures filter through. My Handscent app does not get fb pics, and my free ADW quick dial widget does not get the pics either. If I have a saved picture from my phone it transfers through everywhere as it should, but not FB.
Additional issue is I don't see any birthdays in the contacts area, and birthdays do not sync with the built in calendar.
Having the Dinc and flashing it various 100 times, I've deleted all cache and data from my calendar and the two facebook programs and restarted phone, but no such luck.
Any ideas what could be wrong or what to do?
Don't sync through the Facebook app anymore. Download Facebook contact sync and they'll show up in all apps, and you can setup high quality images as well.

I had the same problem and gave up a long time ago and decided to link everyone's contacts with photos I have on my cell phone.
I'll have to check out that facebook sync app
---------- Post added at 10:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:27 AM ----------
At the same time, I had problems with Facebook automatically linking to contacts, and had to do it manually much of the time with the 100 or so in-phone contacts that I had. Pretty annoying.

Awesome suggestion... the sync app works just as I wish the Facebook app did... thank you very much!
I thought the S3 came pre-installed with the FB Sync app? There are two FG apps that need to be used in conjunction, one for syncing, one for actual FG access to posts, feeds. At least that is how I understood it and have it set up...
Here's the 2 apps that I've used before.

[Q] Infuse with CM 10 unable to sync FB Contacts

Hello, I recently updated my infuse to CM 10 and have been mostly enjoying it.
I have one huge problem however, which is that I can't sync my facebook contacts
I don't fully know why. I can get my gmail and g+ contacts, but not my facebook, and seemingly, more than half of my original contacts came from facebook (I'll be sure to fix that).
I need a fix to this, if anyone knows what to do to get it working. I'm not sure why it wont, I've tried redownloading the fb app, deleting its cache, and even removing all phone contact accounts and re adding the, but to no avail.
Can someone please help?
That has not worked since ICS. It was disabled by google I believe..
You can try Liquid Smooth which has a hack to allow fb sync.

There is also Contact Sync for Facebook in GooglePlay that can be used.
Try friend caster. It has some cool features that the Facebook app doesn't have
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
if you ask me that contact sync feature is a huge privacy violation. having the facebook app give facebook your phone number, and anybody who also has your phone number can see you in the freind finder on their facebook app. when started seeing people i used to work with and other people who i had no buisness seeing their facebook account in the "people you may know" or whatever i deleted the app and let a few of those people know who probably would want to stay anonymous so that they could do the same.
at this point i'm not sure why i still have a facebook. but i probably wont for long. google+ is no better. i'll stick to the traditional google services in the future, ya know the ones that only allow me to see what's going on in my life.

This one doesnt sync phone numbers which I find pointless. It will however bring over all your friends as contacts to your phone with their pictures attached... still pointless if you cant call/txt them.

Friendcaster has a built in fb to contact sync and from what I can see that doesnt import numbers either.

[Q] Contact Linking?

Coming from a HTC One X+ with Sense 5, contacts are linked to Facebook/Twitter etc which is really useful and a feature I really miss with pure Android.
So, in light of this I have two questions:
Can it be done with stock Android without a 3rd party app?
If not, is there a better solution than Contacts+? Whilst this app is ok, it's not as refined as I'd like.
Still love the phone though, by far the best I've had! If I can solve this contact linking issue then I'll be happy as Larry!
I use HaxSync for syncing Facebook contacts
For Facebook, I use the sync contacts option from Friendcaster. I don't actually use the app otherwise.
Thanks guys, do either of these apps change anything in the contacts? I.e. Can you see Facebook statuses and things when you go into a contact or does it just keep the profile photo synced?
