Hello, I got a new HTC sensation a few days ago and I've noticed an odd problem with my screen. I've heard of the overheating battery, but for me that isn't the problem. Oddly enough the only thing that overheats is the actual touchscreen, mainly the bottom portion with the haptic feedback buttons. The screen only overheats if the phone is in use for a period of time, but if it's sleeping then it stays cool. I just wanted to know if this is common and if I should be concerned with it.

idk if its a problem or not but mine does the same thing too
Phew, glad I'm not the only one. I'm just worried if it might damage the circuitry inside since the screen can get pretty hot.
I got the sensation yesterday. Was dissapointed at how fast it heats up there. but I have to say, compared to my g1 and n1 it cools down reaaallyyy fast!
The dual core cpu is behind there, thats why

I had the same issue and after looking at the screen brightness I noticed that it was not on Automatic, changed the settings and it’s noticeably cooler.
It's actually the battery not the CPU that heats up

Yes it is common mine does the same and it heats up faster when playing HD games but when serfing the web it doesn't heat up at the bottom of the screen

For me the issue of screen was never there, it only appeared yesterday (its been more than a month since i bought my sensation). Yesterday i was playing a game and the battery was at 8 % so i plugged the charger and kept playing for another 15 minutes. When i exited the game and then after 5 minutes i checked i found that screen's bottom portion was heated up and not working properly. Launching other applications and doing weird stuff. I checked the temperature and it was at 40, i let it cool down and when temperature reached 37, the screen has become less hot and it started working properly and is fine since then.
The only thing that i m worried abt is if that heating might have caused some permanent damage to screen.
Have any of you owned an android device before? Pretty much all of the ones i have had heat up ESPECIALLY When connected to wifi, charging and playing games.~Only difference is this one has more than TWICE THE POWER of any of my old devices, i would worry if it didnt get hot.Just my 2 cents

I have owned a fair few phones and had every android t-mobiles released in my hand for at least 48 hours and non show heat problems like some of these devices.. i think when the undervolting is done and a scalling the problem is decreased.. But my first sensation died while on charge and was stupidly hot round the touch buttons.. My second sensation hardly gets hot but is now awaiting UPS to take it in for a power button repair..
The architecture of the chip and the expected heat output should not cause the other components of the phone or the chip die to critically fail.. These are the first generation dual core cpu's and I am sure they will learn by the mistakes made with having the ariel's etc in the wrong places.. shame we have to be guinea pigs.. Will be good to see if they have took notice and the XE doesnt suffer some of the issues..
the back cover issue has certainly beeen attempted to be address'd they have 3 revisions of it out so far...

i havebeen using my phone for the last couple of hours to listen to music and do a bit of surfing whilst bored at work ... the temp has got upto 44 degree's , its not plugged in charging .... is this normal ??
the heat seems to come from the bottom of the phone .....
ive had some hot phones but this is ridiculous - htc really need to sort this before our phones ... excuse the pun burn out !
what temps have your phones got to ?? is 44 degree's ok or is it too high
i dont want to turn the phone screen off every time i use it for a while just to cool the damn thing down.
What phone are you using. I have n HD7 that gets really hot. I mean really if it wasn't for the development on HTC devices no one would be buying them. The build quality is poor from the processor to the display to the housing. That's why Samsung is a trusted manufacturer but lacks development its truly their only flaw.

Yep using sensation - the heat is crazy .... ill try the app
how long do i have to put up with this heat before it settles ???
the temp doesnt seem to come from the battery as it radiates at the bottom
i cant believe htc released a phone which causes so much heat - will a firmware release sort it ?? i wonder

Cool it man I'm using the xda app for android and it doesn't exactly tell you where you are unless you navigate there yourself. well today mine got up to 44 but that was my fault. i always take the case off when charging it and i forgot to do it. also i was using it during this.
the case reduces heat dissipation. as soon as took off the case it went down to 38.
so i recommend that if you have a case on your phone and you see or feel that is getting too hot, take off the case.
I wouldn't want to say it's normal however I've had at least 3 sensations that were hitting around 43 to 45deg C just on battery while using Google Maps or browsing the web. The reps (all three working at the time) in the store found it strange that the phone was getting so hot just to the touch.
May have to underclock our devices like the iPhone. shouldn't be much of a difference considering it has a dual core processor right?

The most important isnt the Frequency, the most important is the voltage in the processor...
On SGSII, you have practically the same voltage at 1.2Ghz than 1Ghz or 800Mhz...
So i think is the same on Sensation... lower voltages, or you never get decent temperatures.
Am I being to simple here or is it just the fact so much tech is in the handsets now that it will obviously get hot? I would of thought this is the norm for phones nowadays and without sticking a fan on the back there is nothing that can be done?
Can we compare this to a PC? What temp do processors run at on a PC, and is there a limit before they lag or fail?

You cannot compare a smartphone to a PC, due the pc have an active cooling, and an smartphone have a passive one...
So, the smartphone will get more hot than a PC.
This temps are good, but think this components are more delicated than a pc, so the temperature isn't good for her life.
Played 15min of asphalt hd and the phone got very hot. I took off the back cover off to investigate and noticed the microsd is located at the bottom of the phone. The microsd was untouchable. Hope the device heat will not damage it.
All HTC devices have inbuilt thermal protection. If the phone gets too hot it will shutdown and/or reboot.

Mine got up to 52C while outside using the GPS Saturday.
i think the highest mine has got is around 115deg. (around 46C). this is rediculous i think since it only happens when i play a game for like 20 min..browsing the web reaches around 107 sometimes. but im past my 2 week remorse period so i cant return/exchange the phone at t-mobile, dont know what to do since some ppl say this is normal for being a dual core and wut not, but then not everyone has these overheating issues
Hey guys. I'm a new T-Mobile customer with an HTC MyTouch4G Slide (or the Doubleshot if you prefer). I came from Sprint with a Samsung Epic 4G.
For the most part, I love my doubleshot (even if I miss the screen size of the Epic), but I've been experiencing something weird. Every couple of days my phone will just randomly reset of its own accord.
I exchange the phone after the first few times this happened, and the second few. This is my third straight Doubleshot now, and I thought I was in the clear until it hard reset last night without me asking it to.
Relevant info: this has occurred with phones that were both S-ON and S-OFF, rooted and unrooted, stock ROM and with ROMs made by both CK23 and Undead.
Is anyone else experiencing this with their Doubleshot, and do you have any suggestions on fixing it? It's not a major dilemma, more of an annoyance, but I figure it's a $600 phone - it shouldn't do crap like that.
Never had or even heard of anyone else with this issue. How do you carry your phone, in your pocket with other kinds of electrical devices?
Just throwing random stuff out there because I've never head of this (not saying it cant happen)
If I'm out and about it's in my pocket with absolutely nothing else. No keys, no coins, no other gadgets. I'm a bit paranoid about keeping my screen as scratch free as possible (yes, I have a screen protector).
If I'm not out, it sits on my desk near a couple of Acer monitors and two small Sony satellite speakers for my computer.
Do you think the magnets on those speakers could be affecting your phone? I remember on older TVs if you kept speakers next to it, it would distort colors and picture
Not likely. The magnetic drivers in these satellites are tiny to begin with. My phone isn't that close to them, and there are few, if any, parts inside a phone like this which are susceptible to weak magnetic interference.
Seeing as how this hasn't really happened to any others, here's some ideas:
Are you running modaco recovery 4.0.0.9?
Since it has happened to you on several phones, do you think it could be software related? Maybe there's something which is running process(es) in the background which are causing your phone to freeze up and become unresponsive at which point it simply resets itself.
Yes, as to MoDaCo Recovery 4.0.0.9. It's entirely possible the problem could be software related, but I can't think of anything that would be consistently running on my phone to cause the problem.
I have a rather strong addiction to the built in task killer and tend to open it and run a "kill all" any time I'm done using my phone to ensure memory is already free for whatever game/ap I intend to run when I start up again.

That might be the problem right there. Try not doing that.
Task killers are a no go.
Sent from my MyTouch 4G Slide using xda premium
That doesn't make a lot of sense though. One, this is the one built into Android, so I can't imagine it hurts anything. Two, why are the resets seemingly random? This particular phone has only done it once, that I've noticed. The previous phones did it damn near every hour in some instances, a few times a day in others.
They don't appear to have any correlation to task killing.
OP, maybe you're really pressing the phone's limits with intensive use. Have you noticed that the phone and battery becoming hot after even 10 min or so of gaming/surfing/texting,etc? Perhaps the battery is overheating, which causes these random reboots. It's only a guess though...
Oh and I hate how the battery gets so hot. Anyone else experiencing this dilemma? My previous Android phone's battery didn't become nearly as hot as the MT4GS's.
No the task killer is only to kill sense items and basic apps. HTC added it not Google.

I am having the hot battery issue too. Even with the Anker 19 mah battery... I swear it actually could cook something. My boyfriend has the same phone, and it doesn't happen to his.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using XDA App
Anthonayy, nope. Not really. I can go more than a day without needing to recharge with my usage pattern. I am not a heavy user.
Undeadk9, even if the task killer is only to kill sense items and basic apps, I'm not using it to kill anything besides that. Also, my use of the task killer has shown no apparent correlation to the rebooting. The reboots are seemingly random. Typically they occur when I am *not* using the phone. I'll look over and all of a sudden, boop! My phone is resetting itself. It might happen far more often than I think, but I've only witnessed it one time with the current phone.
I may have over-exagerated my use of it before. I typically just use the task killer before I open a memory intensive game (like Asphalt) because the games tend not to run right if I try to open them without enough available RAM (big shock).
Seconded.
I have not rooted and run a stock mt4gs and have had this happen once every 3-7 days. Again sometimes I am using it and sometimes not. No apparent cause.
I did just chalk it up to a bad out of memory error, and the device just resets as a failsafe.
In re: to hot batteries the Anker has been a big win in that area. It will heat up once in a while but not nearly as much. I have had the reset occur with both batteries (OEM and Anker). Also the reset is not a problem just a minor annoyance.
I haven't ever experienced a hot battery. On my G2 and wifes Glacier both got hot batteries big time.

"Sense" as in HTC Sense or the actual phone?
We're talking about the phone resetting, if the Sense interface is rebooting, we got another issue. lol
For those who already have a One S, do you also have a contact noise in the background when you're talking to someone on the phone?
It gets louder if you turn up the volume and it is pretty annoying. Am I the only one having this problem?
What could be the reasons for this?

In comparison to my hd2 it has a better battery life. I would say about 6-8 h online time. The only disturbing thing I found so far is the noise when calling someone.
The processor is devilishly good, everything is smooth and fast. Also it fits perfect in the hand, not too big and not too small either.

6-8 hours immense browsing with the phone. After that I have to recharge the battery, but not sure yet.
After 15 hours (about 30 mins using internet, most of this time in standby) I still got 75% of battery life.
I have 53% battery life after 24h not charging.
I used it for some surfing, sync, whatsapp, facebook and some other apps most time in wlan. 8h was completely standby, the rest was a mix of using and standby.
My first impression is, that the battery has an acceptable life.
That seems to be decent, though I do wonder how it'll be once it's all settled in, but back on topic. Do you still get that sound while using the headset or a bluetooth? Related to this, but is it just you or does the other person hear it, it might be the mic (or does the One S have a dual mic setup?) backfeeding or something like that.

I have this problem too. It also feels like there are sometimes kind of interruptions in the conversation.
Haven't had a call yet...if the issue is there I hope it is a software bug. That can be fixed easily. I also hope they will get rid of that ugly on screen menu button and bring the htc sense blur live wallpaper back!
And the flip clock should always flip and not occasionally.
I received my replacement one s due to call quality issues and the new one is even worse. everyone says i sound like im in a tin can as my voice is SUPER muffled. they can hear when i start and stop talking but the words just arent sharp enough to hear anything. wtf is going on with this phone?
This can be operator issue.
Yup I've had that too. I get it about every time that I call a new number. Completely muffled and can't hear other side. But that might just be me sincevI'm convinced that my phone is completely defective.
I've noticed that my phone lags in basic tasks that even my mytouch 4G handled smoothly. It'll even freeze halfway through a song quite often. Not sure what's going on but I've had major performance problems with my One S even after a full reboot.
My battery dies in about 10 hours of mostly being on standby. I go to school so I listen to music for about a total time of an hour and half throughout the day.
I turn my Internet off, wifi off and Google location services off and still the same result.
Battery settings says it's mostly using the screen even though it's off for about 85% of my use... Anyone else?

I migrated over from a mt4g as well. The call quality on that thing was perfect. You might want to try and do an exchange on your one s because mine doesnt hang on basic tasks and ive been really surprised by the battery life in comparison to my mt4g. With some moderate morning use (some games, surfing, app downloads) and then forgetting to charge it afterwards my phone lasts on stand by from 9pm to 1pm the next day with some charge still left over. it sorta lags a tiny bit but nothing to complain about. the only game ive really played on it is temple run and it seems to glitch in the beginning a few times by freezing and continuing the game but it sort of fixes itself? My screen, like yours, is apparently always the culprit for battery time even though i have it set to auto brightness and have it so it turns off in 30 seconds.
the call quality is what i can't handle. this phone is great but if i can't make a phone call whats the point!? i'll be getting my 3rd replacement on monday =/
3rd? Wow. I had about 17 exchanges on the mytouch 4G (no joke) and was hoping that I wouldn't have to go through any on this phone. Was there anything special that you did with the phone? (ie charge before 1st use?). I'll probably just tell Tmo about the call quality and lag for them to exchange it. I hate that they won't take battery probs seriously and ask you to do a factory reset.

!! You sound like me. I lost count on how many returns I did on my mytouch4g. In fact... that's how I got my one s.
I b*tched and had so many returns they offered me whatever android I wanted (after threatening to cancel and not pay them sh*t and getting into an argument with their "customer loyalty" department when she tried to "upgrade" me by sending me a sidekick -_-) for free... so I waited until the release date of the one s and ordered it =3
Even though nothing too special must be done with these phones batteries I still let it get an entire charge before I started to play with it. The phone is perfect in every way and I honestly had no complaints until everyone I spoke to told me I sounded like I was muffled =/
My first phone - Everyone could hear me fine, i couldn't really hear them...everything was high pitched and muddy and buzzy sounding for me and it actually hurt my ears to talk to anyone
My second phone - The complete reverse. I can hear everyone fine but no one can hear me.
My third phone - I'll let you know... I'm stuck at work but I'll find out tonight.
(i still haven't sent any of my phones back in case todays phone is even worse.)
They don't take anything seriously -_- every time i call them I'm prepped for the argument because they never know wtf they're talking about. I always had to tell them "HEY...This is my 20th mytouch...CHECK MY ACCOUNT...(by then they just sit silently when they see i'm not lying)... i'm PRETTY SURE i know how to trouble shoot and reset my phone, no there isn't any water damage, so stop wasting my time and send me another phone so we can both get back to whatever the hell it was we were doing >_<" all of my rage.
EDIT:
Received my phone and the call quality isn't 100% but its SUCH an improvement from my other two devices. I'm keeping this one. It'll do. I can hear everyone (not as great as on my mytouch4g) fairly well without any muffled sounds and they can actually understand everything I'm saying. Finally! Definitely try and return your OneS.... i know it's a pain in the ass but it's worth it in the end =/

Haha yup I was offered a sidekick too! I will never know how in the world they find a sidekick a "comparable model" to the mytouch4g and not a Galaxy S 4g at least.
I called about an hour ago, they said my replacement will arrive on Wednesday. They charged me a $5 fee though. I'll definitely charge that one for at least 8 hours and hopefully get more than 4 hours of heavy use out of it.

My first one i had to foot the $5 too, but the other two it was more of a "you guys f*cked this up" type situation so they didn't bill me anymore for returns. Good luck =)

Well I got my replacement Wednesday. Charged it for 13 hours and still have insanely weak battery life. Apart from that, my phone rebooted once while on my pocket and being unused. Then it was lagging during browser use and rebooted again. I'm pretty ticked off considering my mytouch experience with T-Mobile and HTC. At this point I might just return the phone, reverse my upgrade and cancel in November when my contract is up and I could get a good black Friday deal on whatever new iPhone Apple offers by then.

I have a normal quality whit stock rom. then i upgraded to maximushd and in call sound quality issues begin.
here is all i did, and no improvement until last step.
1. tried different radios. 1.13 and 1.15 and reflashing 1.20, no improvement
2. installed ElementalX 6.1 kernel and nothing
3. tried In-Call Quality Fix for Sense 5 here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482089
4. finally i tried flashing phone.apk from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46945481&postcount=1844
after 2 days, it seems the problem is solved.
I came with an issue in my Sensation XE and I want everyone to share their experience.
Ok, here is the story: my phone gets warm pretty easily, the most heat is produced on the lower right corner, exactly where the memory card is. It scares me since I can feel the heat on the screen too, and the lower part of the screen is literally hot when I'm using the phone. I'm thinking of sending it to a repair center, but before doing so I want your experience with your phone.
Please note the lower right is my hot spot! Your comments are most welcomed.

Hello
I too have a heat problem with my sensation, but not in the same spot.
Mine gets abnormally hot sometimes around the middle on the back of the phone, and over time spreads out over a good portion of the back cover.

Can you please tell me if you feel the heat on the screen too? Is it an XE?

My phone also gets hot in the exact same area.
As far as I know this is not a problem with the phone, but just arises from regular use.

What I had before is that I have network location base turned off but GPS turned off. Some apps wanted to check location but couldn't because I was inside ad the GPS was heating off. I uninstalled that app and it stopped happening. But no matter what, you should check which apps are on a lot...
I have that problem too, mine's a normal Sensation.
I've lifted the back off, held one of my fingers on the metallic memory card holder, and it was hot hot hot!
Also the same prob. After ICS update my Sensation heats up too much at the bottom. The same temperature at the back cover and on the display. Very hot! I am not really sure if it is normal, but the only thing that crosses my mind is the second core.

You are not alone:

Don't worry, its fine. It's because the Sensation is a real Powerhouse. I am also lucky enough to own a S2, and that also heats up with usage.
The GPS and Gaming will dramatically make the device hotter.
Keep an eye on the temperature using a monitoring App, and if it's of concern to you, then give HTC a call.
The link above mentions that an alternative battery may help. But I wouldn't worry too much.
Battery monitor App:

Cheers.
GPS, Wifi Tethering, Games with GPU rendering, large I/O operations all cause large heatups. Try refrain from using the modules/ activities or change ROM to see if it makes a difference!
Same device, same issue. Interestingly, mine did not start heating up until I swapped the battery one afternoon while on the go. My phone got the ICS update 3 weeks ago, still the same.
Since ICS, I havent had the need to swap out the battery as I have experienced much better battery life but it still gets hit, all lower part of the phone, front and back, screen also.
*I did call HTC to report it, my phone is still under warrenty and so they were willing to repair it, with one caveat... You're out a phone for a week or two. I havent yet gone trough the repair as I am pretty close to purchasing a new phone (international One X or T MoUSA One S) but may do so once I have my new toy in hand.
Friend just called me few minutes ago and now I'm still on the phone it's been like 10 minutes and now my phone is starting to get very hot warm.
Should I get worried?

Any tips then?
Or should I go to the store and exchange it?
Curiously, were you holding it in your left hand during the call?

Mine gets hot too. It happens during a call, using GPS, and playing graphically intensive games. I think the unibody design has some part in causing the heat issues.
The phone does cool down pretty quickly after finishing one of the activities mentioned above.

No games. Nothing else before, just regular browsing. No GPS either and it was right hand and right ear.

My phone gets a little hot and I always use my left hand to talk -- is there something about holding the phone in the left hand?
Well, oddly might be, I think there could be a little signal death grip happening.
I know I can choke out my WiFi using phone in left hand an cause it to warm up.
Though it might not be the issue here, just an out there idea and thought of mine.
Other oddity I have noticed, every day about 2pm until 5ish, it runs way hotter.
I have written that off as poor signal due to schools letting out and sudden increase of bandwidth Usage by younger users.

Posting threads in the correct section will prevent your phone from overheating ...well, maybe not, but it will prevent further action on my part.
