Just rooted with one click root and I'm trying to install a custom recovery so i can flash roms and such... I see something telling me to use ODIN but I have no clue what that is.
I tried to flash the .zip from the sticky in the development section but the stock recovery obviously wouldn't work. This phone is much more complicated to work with when compared to my evo lol

I read them 10 times or more, it says flash them.... I can't flash with the stock recovery.
Maybe you should read them before you answer with nonsense
I just wanna get a recovery on this phone and everything starts with ODIN, no clue what that is. I googled it and downloaded something but it doesn't appear to be what I need.
Something a little more clear would be helpful..
Nevermind, got it
Actually, the link is in a sticky . . . just not in the General section, lol. It's in the Development section, Files to get your Mesmerize back to stock 2.1 and 2.2.1.

Better buy a nomex suit cause you're about to get torched.
Wrong place for a QUESTION. Look in the Bible and there are plenty of odin flashable ROMS as well as a kernel to gain root. Hope I don't come off as offensive it's just a lot of people here are getting tired of this type of stuff(me included).
EDITED TO ADD
Man there are THREE ODIN flashable roms on the front page of the dev section right NOW. LOOK before you post.
Thanks, I will keep looking i guess.

The amount of time that it would take me to go find you a ROM you can flash via Odin would be the same amount of time that it would have taken you to read a little and locate the correct section to post this. Give a little to get a little, until then...

Anyways if your on GB and you want to use Odin why not flash a Dr Honk kernel you will get Cwm/ root and voodoo lagfix and ext4 aat the same time! Lol then you can flash the rom of your choice.
You can also use superoneclick 2.2 if all you want is root.

Umm... that's probably because it's meant for froyo bro. If you can still boot into the rom that you were in, add the su fix in the Doctorz rom and then flash it. If not, odin to stock, root FROYO, 3e, gtg community kernel. You know the deal.
This phone is a headache....my skyrocket is so much less frustrating!!!

So....you are saying ....there is no root for g.bread?!....why do I see 2.3.6 roms everywhere....or am I not looking at this right?.....my goal was froyo to gingerbread ....then root and flash some better performance roms....(scratching head)

If you had really researched it you would have read that SOC won't root the kk3 leak.
The GB roms that you see have been modded or ported.
To root the kk3 leak all you have to do is flash entropy's kernel dated 11/02/11.

I'm sorry, but I'm a total noob with Samsung. I rooted to a particular ROM, but ran into some issues and had to unbrick the phone. Upon doing so, I selected the kk3 leak and then lost root. I used SOC 2.3.3 to try to reroot, but I got stuck at step 7. So I want to try flashing Entropy's kernel as you mentioned. I'm not sure how to do this though. The kernel is in a CWM .zip format, but Odin reads .tar files. Do I unzip the .zip file and then convert to a .tar file? This didn't seem to work when I initially tried it, but perhaps I did something wrong. Any special settings I need to use? Also, do I just need to reboot after I flash it and I will have root? If not, what else must I do?
Sorry again for my lack of understanding. I've been trying to find an answer for hours and have become a little desperate. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

lol. Well another member said "To root the kk3 leak all you have to do is flash entropy's kernel dated 11/02/11." I thought that meant it could be rooted. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I have rooted my phone while still being froyo. I read that kies wont be able to read the phone once rooted. And I understand if i try to use kies to upgrade it. It may cause a error. What are my option??? I have found a thread to solve the problem but I can't seem to find it anymore. Sorry if i repeated this thread. Thank you for any information. have a nice day.

It doesn't really matter whether your phone is rooted or not, that's the beauty of these phones. Just follow lumin's instructions and you'll be set.
He can't use Kies mini because he is rooted. I think he only saw the guide in the first post and that is why he thought it wouldn't work.

Yes i have looked and looked none of them really really help me in my search they just tell me stuff that i dont get im not new to this stuff jsut the help is confusing
Click on my "Helpful Links" signature below. Then see the Guides and Root (How to). That's about as easy as it is gonna get, apart from someone taking ur phone and doin it for ya.
Guide of Guides
I just went through the process of rooting and roming for the first time and wrote this up for a buddy of mine interested in doing the same. The fact that this is the first time I've done this should be a bit of a warning though. Still, it worked for me.
Here's basically what I did. You might want to read through them all before starting.
Backup manually by mounting your phone to your computer and copying everything you care about
Root
I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444382
From a Mac, I think you can do the same, but flash with Heimdall instead of Odin
Now that you have root, get Titanium Backup from the Market and backup
This is an awesome app, you can also use it to remove the AT&T bloatware, which will really improve your phone
Install ClockworkMod (aka, CWM)
Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=566807&d=1302623831
Follow ROM instructions
I used Slim ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517486
Download and install instructions on the web site: http://www.slimroms.com/
Grab a nightly CM9 ROM for that: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=captivatemtd
any other help?
Again what stock ROM are you on?

I think he's saying that instead of Designgear's one-click, which will take you back to stock Eclair, you could use a Froyo-based one-click to go back to stock Froyo.

flashing back to eclair as the OP said is probably easier. With 2e recovery, there's no need to modify the 3e recovery file or flash a custom kernel. Just load up cwm.zip on your SD card and flash away.

I don't know that the thing you're looking for exists right now. AdamOutler made a Heimdall-based Froyo one-click, but I don't think there is an Odin-based one.
At the moment, it looks like your choices are to use the Odin-based one-click (by Designgears or Cezar, depending on your bootloader needs), or the Heimdall-based one-click of Froyo.
I have the Skyrocket (of course) and recently downloaded ICS OTA, or some sort of update. The phone rebooted as normal, but gave me the Clock Work Mod screen. I rebooted the phone from there and got a nice error message on my home screen saying the update was interrupted. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe im wrong but to do an update like that dont you have to be on stock recovery not cwm. I know some of the experts will chime in. FYI make sure you put things like this in Q&A for future ref.
I'm not sure if it was ICS or not. But I simply clicked on "Check for updates" under device management and I have one. The phone downloads the update but when it restarts I get the CWM Recovery screen. I'm new to Clock Work, but I went ahead and restored my phone to a previous setting through Rom Manager and tried again. Same thing. Do I need to disable CWM?

First thing you need to specify, are you with rogers? Which phone do you have exactly?
flash the recovery file from sammobile through odin. Which also has ICS tar for the Rogers equivalent. Download the file, flash through odin. There is an All in one guide for noobs near the top of the general forum with layed out instructions, just find the post you need on the front page and follow those instructions. It should be listed under returning to stock or unrooting.
i would download the ICS tar from sammobile and use the method in the guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
That will show you how to get back to stock. that is the first sticky in the dev section.
Edit: oh beat me to it i type too slow lol.
As this is a question it belongs in Q&A. To OP your questions should should have answers in the stickies and the many Upgrade related thread elsewhere. But since the community pitched in I will just placce in Q&A.
