there's no 4G yet in San Diego (north county coastal) and since it's been some time now since 4G & the Thunderbolt have been available i decided to call Verizon and complain about it. They apologized and gave me a refund for this month.

I'd call that a success.

be thankful they at least gave you that. 4g isn't everywhere yet.
We finally got it turned on today in Memphis. Thank God.

On the other hand, I bought a Thunderbolt while planning on not having 4G for quite some time, and I suddenly got a 4G signal at my house not a week later...
You should try this every month.
Try buying the HTC Evo and paying and extra $10 per month for 4G when it never came for a year. Yes I know they changed the wording to a "premium data fee" after all the complaints but when the phone was released, alot of us had the understanding that we would be rocking WiMax (nowhere near the 4G I have now with LTE) soon after purchase lol.

lol you hit that on th hed. I was about to say I'd be mad more at the fact I was paying $10 more per month for fake 4G rather than the fact it wasn't available yet haha.
I'm in North County as well and it sucks we don't have 4g. Though i've been able to get it in parts of San Marcos. Also, when visiting my friend up in Irvine I get fringe 4g coverage.
They've "expanded" 4G service in San Diego once since they've launched it. Be patient, I'm sure it won't be too much longer before they fill the gaps between LA, San Diego, and Riverside counties.

The bright side is even with paying $10 more for 4G, Sprint still has the cheapest unlimited plan out there (last time I checked anyway).

While indeed this is true to a point, my speeds were not usable. YouTube, Pandora, you name it, were next to useless unless one enjoys seeing a constant BUFFERING. I was getting 200kb dl speeds, sometimes even less then 100kb when I had Sprint. It was so bad that I actually filed a complaint with the BBB about it,saying that because Sprint was failing to provide me a service that I was paying for, I shouldnt have to pay my ETF.
After going back and forth, I agreed to paying 1/2 of what I owed since I broke the contract by going to Verizon and they broke the contract by not providing me with a usable service or speeds NOWHERE near what was advertised at the time of purchase (which was a national average of 700k down). And yes I lived in an area saturated with their 3G coverage (just outside Milwaukee).

yeah sprint 3g is pretty bad, nothing compared to hspa on at&t or t-mobile. I haven't found verizon to be much better, usually getting 500-700 kbps, but with the newest leaked radio, speeds are now about 1mbps which is fine for those times i don't have 4g available.
I wish we would get LTE where we live in GA but I know its not happening anytime soon. How is VZW getting the numbers of covering 50% already if they barely have coverage over the map
They cover the most densely populated areas, not the huge areas where there is next to no population. If you break down the areas they do cover, add up the population, and do the same for the areas they do not cover, you will see they do indeed cover 50% of the population.

See this is where its odd. I have 2 friends, one had the droidx and another had the iphone (with ATT). They stood outside with me at my work and we ran some 3G tests.
Verizon 2.2mb
AT&T 2.4mb
Sprint 250kb
I know about tower placement and other circumstances but that was just plain unacceptable for me

I still somehow doubt they cover 50% of the US population. There are over 300 million people and even though they have a lot of the major cities covered that still will not equal 150 million. Think the numbers are fudged somewhere lol

I love this phone, but t-mobile sucks. I can't take the ****ty service anymore. I've had more dropped calls in the past 2 weeks than I've had with Att, sprint, and Verizon over the past 10yrs.
I originally thought I'd be able to use att towers, but we all know that isn't yet possible.
Not sure what carrier and phone to go with now. hmmmm....
What is Tmo's coverage map look like in your area? If it was bad to begin with, then you should be expecting this coming in.
If not, then you may just have a bad device.
not sure about dropped calls, but T-mobile signal coverage does suck
You meant to say Tmobile sucks in you location because it doesn't suck in mine (Baltimore) but you know who's service does suck in my area. ATT and Sprint. My wife's iPhone gets multiple dropped calls though out the week and there data speeds suck. Sprints WiMax is laughable and always gets static on the line. Tmobile however has insane 4g speeds where I live and I average 8mbs DL and 3mbs UL in and around Baltimore. Not to mention I haven't had a dropped call since I can remember. I don't even remember the last time I went without service. In the end there is no point for me to pay more and get less. A post like yours is all subjective depending on where you live and in the end, this thread is idiotic. Nobody wants to hear you high about carrier service in a forum dedicated to a device.

It shows as covering everywhere. I wouldn't have gotten the phone if the coverage maps were accurate. I get 3g att coverage on my company phone when I have 0 signal with tmobile.
Driving my kids to school 8 miles away I have NO service for 80% of the drive, never had issues with any other carrier. I can pretty much count on ONLY getting service if I'm at or near a city center.
In my area I have great t-mobile coverage and I had att before which was very bad.
So go for the network which works best for you. No point in cribbing here since I guess no can help you. All it does is a flame war.

I'm having a fair amount of problems with lost signal, and all I did was upgrade from my Nexus 1. Still live in Chicago, still drive the same routes, but before where it was not an issue it is now. Which forces me to conclude it's either SW that still needs improvement, or hardware a la Apple's infamous antenna problems.

I have to say though that I think the I'm leaving posts have their place. If I'm researching a potential phone, I'm interested in disgruntled customers and their rants. They helped me decide on this phone for instance.
While there are a few(I'm leaving posts) for the G2X, there are not that many. And when someone is leaving for a bs, unenlightened, not ever gonna be satisfied reason, it's usually pretty apparent. But go to Androidforums and see all the complaints about the Indulge. There are legions of users who are unhappy. If one person is detered then the people who've posted have helped.
Thank Zeus for the forums. An educated consumer is a powerful one. You have to have a lot of opinions to make an informed decision. Even the redonkalous ones LOL.
I drive between NJ and PA around 70 miles to work everyday. Never dropped a call even while on drive all the way. Tmobile coverage is very good. It sure hops between 2g and 4g, but that is due to the software. AT&T is not at all good in my area.

8 miles to school!!! damn. Must not be in the city
Tmobile works well in the cities but not so much in-between. I travel and it sucks sometimes. Airports are the worst. ALL AIRPORTS SHOULD HAVE GREAT COVERAGE ON ALL CARRIERS... but they don't. With AT&T and Tmobile I'm often left with little to no cell signal. Verizon has the best coverage and is the most reliable. AT&T is second with Tmobile last.
90% of the time I am within the city and get great 4G data speeds and a reliable network.
I am always amused by how people are so easily affected my the media machine. BMW is the ultimate driving machine, Verizon is the best, Mercedes never break, blah blah blah...
I have Tmo in SoCal...I've had ATT, Sprint and Verizon. I would not trade Tmo's customer service for any or all of the other 3's claims. Sprint and ATT's data speeds are laughable here. Verizon is good but not worth 3x the price. ATT I think spends all their time trying to make their automated phones menus more torturous. The last time I needed to call ATT, I spent 2 hours calling number after number and never got my issue resolved. I cancelled all my ATT services at that point...took nearly all day to do it but boy do I feel good about it now.

We have to admit, AT&T‘s current “4G” offering – which uses HSPA+ – has left us pretty much cold, with underwhelming speeds in comparison to Verizon’s LTE network. Happily AT&T also has LTE plans of its own, and the carrier has just announced the first five markets to get the speedier 4G access: Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio will all get some AT&T LTE-lovin’ as of this summer.

Sadly, you're probably right.
"Hmm, let's give them phones that they'll want to do more on, give them higher speeds, and then give them stupid low caps!"
They either didn't think that through or are simply evil.
I wouldn't doubt that att would say they have to place a cap because of infrastructure limitations. But hopefully us grandfathered ones would keep holding on to the unlimited data. But if they don't I will demand they give me a huge ass sweet deal or I would leave lol. Hopefully it won't be the latter.
The only reason anybody on any planet would want LTE speeds, let alone hsupa speeds is to download large files. Its like giving us all ferrari's and sayin, "now you only get to drive it for 200miles a month and after that its gonna cost you". Too bad their the ones with the ferrari's... and it almost seems like a huge evil plan. I always get these texts with a "tip" that using wifi is free. Ok, so, you limit all your phones to 2gigs a month, charge the for going over, then HEY whada ya know, wifi is free! Bless us all were SAVED! OH, WAIT!! I dont have wifi, - then the rep tells me, well we can take care of that, you can get 6mbs for only $19.99 a month! Whoa wait, I thought wifi was free? Hmm... I wonder how many people got new internet service along with their iphone 4 or shortly after. I call shenanigans...
@ BAleR
I pay more per month for my two data packages w/ ATT than I do for my unlimited 25/5 Verizon Fios home interwebs. Somethins wrong w/ that piktar.
As with Sprint, will take a long time before they come to the hampton roads area
What I'd like to know will the current roms & kernels support lte or will they have to be redone to enable the lte technology.

I'm currently on Verizon, 4 lines together with my family.
I'm hitting some bad times financially so my parents are paying for it, I'm trying to save some money for them though, so I was considering switching to TMobile or Sprint.
I need some real time advice on their services and data coverage.
3G and "4G" speeds, what the signal is like, etc.
I know about their phones so I'm worrying about that later.
I've heard bad things about both carriers' speeds and signals but I'm sure that depends on where you live, hence I need real discussion from different people.
I live in central NC if that helps.
I'm not too keen on AT&T but if anyone has anything to add about them, go ahead, I'll consider it.
I would change to Sprint, the best coverage prices and the network is decent.

Sprint has a 30 day money back guarantee so you might try them first.

im on t-mobile its cheap and i get good signal at my house but if i go a few miles out of this area i lose coverage when i leave the town and i dont have any 3g/4g coverage in my area t-mobile is spotty about 3g/4g i dont get any 3g coverage unless i travel 30 minutes west of here to get any 3g signal depending on where u live i would check coverage maps if ur area has 3g/4g go ahead with t-mobile
Whoa man!
Periods. Use them.
I know what you mean..but it comes down to $40 for me per month for my family on Verizon...I personally was on ATT for 18 months..really bad service in all ways you can think of..now they are buying tmobile..be prepared for you r bills to go up as well with this merger...when/if it happens..Sprint has only 1 carrier and that is ClearWire with its 4g backbone support..so far their testing 4g speeds have been really badnot to mention here in California my wife ALWAYS made sure our bill with Sprint was where it was supposed to be..meaning we got bills for $600..then down to $0 due to their irresponsibility (2009) ..not much of a price between tmo/sprint when compared to Verizon..personally..its not worth nickel n diming as I did for my family for 18 months and we hated it..and didnt pay off at all..good luck with your choice..try to consider MetroPCS or BoostMobile (cheap pre pay)
(if you choose not to stay)

If I had to choose between staying with Verizon and switching to AT&T ... for the price, I would definitely choose Verizon.
I would consider Sprint, but not T-Mobile since I've had more than one bad experience with them and also because they are being absorbed my AT&T.

but I feel like I need more testing though.

been with sprint since 1998. Good coverage, good service and competitive pricing.
When I was on cm7 I could change to the t-mobile tower without incurring roaming charges and achieve 4g data but now that I am on SKY ICS, I can't...
I didn't have to do anything with setting up apn through the dialer with cm7, I just went to mobile operators and chose the tower I wanted on cm7. Is there a way to do the same on SKY ICS? Thanks.
Will I had the same deal except I was on T-mobile. Back in the g1 launch days. T-Mobile and AT&T have since redefined the roaming agreement and don't allow free roaming unless there its no AT&T or T-mobile coverage in that area. Other wise you get that "cannot register on network" error. This hadn't work from the T-Mobile side for a while. At least 6 to 8 months. But recently T-Mobile expanded coverage from Edge and now they have their 4g(hspa) coverage here.
I would much rather have T-Mobile then AT&T anyway. My wife rubs it in my face now that they have 4g(Hspa) coverage. She never switched over with me, and she is darn happy the merger never went through.
But I don't think its possible anymore. And if it worked while on cm7 I'd stick with it for a while longer. Maybe it had to do with open apn because I can't even choose a different carrier, its locked.

I've been feeling more tempted of late to buy out of my contract for T-Mo. When LTE was first lit up here, I averaged around 15Mbps down. Lately, it's been around 6MBps. While some of my friends on T-Mo have been averaging 8-9MBps on their G-Nex. WTF?
There's a family plan on T-Mo: 1000 min, 2GB ea= $70.
My current family plan on ATT: 550 min, 2GB ea= $110.
That's $960 ($480/line) over two years. This essentially wipes out any savings I had from buying my phone subsidized on AT&T even if I factor in my 15% company discount, especially if I look at the new price of the Galaxy Nexus on the play store.
I'm just a bit wary of their future since they're trying to get themselves bought out.
Won't matter if they get bought out because you have a contract with them so it wouldn't effect you at all. And if something happened such as price increase etc you could cancel and move to another company for free. It waives the cancellation fee if they change the contract. I don't see them getting bought out anytime soon.

Jackson is a service black hole, as you probably already know. The town basically banned towers from being constructed, it's a nightmare. Surprisingly, T-Mobile has decent service in Jackson, my AT&T service is fine, Sprint's was a bit iffy there. My experiences have been along County Line Road, where I have family.
Outside of Jackson, I'd highly recommend AT&T. Sprint's 3G data varies wildly, anywhere from 2mb/s down in Brick, to maybe 200k in Holmdel. Since AT&T upgraded our area, I'm getting about 5mb down during the day, a high of 7-8mb down at night.
For the record, if you don't care about LTE, Straight Talk works GREAT around us. Same speed as AT&T's normal service, for $45/month.
