I'm trying to to create a wifi hotspot (not bluetooth tether) on my iphone 3gs, that parts ok, but when my TF101 try's to connect i get the error "Android does not support connecting to Ad-Hoc (IBSS) type networks.
What the..?
Is their a workaround for this?
If you're rooted there's a work around. Look in the dev section
There's also an app of not rooted.

Thanks mate, but I can't find any reference to a workaround anywhere. Can you please post the link.
use ios build in feature. do you have saved shsh blobs for ios 4.3.3? if so, upgrade your iphone using tinyumbrella ("Start TSS Server").

Not relevant, AT ALL.
In the iOS feature, he might get extra charges
If he has blobs, what's the point to UPGRADE ... lol ...

I just purchased the gtab after careful deliberation and i have just one woe.... The only way to get internet access here is to connect to the local provider through the wireless routers they have distributed throughout the installation... Thats the easy part... after that you have to connect using a PPPOE vpn.... i do this with my laptop but i want to use my gtab on the net also.. call me greedy... So my question is; is it possible in anyway to connect to their VPN? Or maybe bridge the connection between my lappy and the gtab?
It might be possible thru Bluetooth? That is if your laptop has Bluetooth. Otherwise I think you will need a small wifi router or something and setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).
Bluetooth won't work....
You can use VPN software on your tab but that needs specific settings [ the same from your lap top ] just need to find compatible VPN software for the tab that will work with your network.
Easiest solution is to use your laptop as a wireless router.
depending on your OS [ assuming windows ] there are many guides online on how to set it up.
May be as easy as selecting your network connection and turning on network sharing....
Goodluck homie
EDIT: i don't know what your base's restrictions are but if your "tech" team helped set up your laptop they should help on the tab too.

Make sure you restrict your hot spot on your laptop to the mac address of your tab and see if you can hide your ssid as well. The base techs lock you down to VPN access for their security so they will not like you opening up their network for everyone to access using your vpn connection.

Thats not necessary as the internet we have is not supplied by the base techs.. we get our personal internet from a local civilian contractor called IO Global.... and the thrid country nationals they have working the branch are no where near enough tech savvy to care what im doing... but thank you for your concern...

Firstly! Thank you to all for your service to our country!!!! As the people in Egypt are finding out FREEDOM is not FREE.
Second... I do not know which ROM you are using; however Clemsyn's KERNEL does support configuring VPN on your tablet. Please go to this thread for more information:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895825
With the above you should be able to configure your tablet and be able to roam around your area without having to go through your laptop.
This should meet the need you have
I hope the above helps and stay low !!!!

You should at least consider doing this anyway, for your own peace of mind: you don't want some random stranger abusing your network connection or potentially accessing your personal data, do you? You wouldn't take chances with your physical security I am sure. Your data security is important too.

+100!
Yes, thank you!
thanks everyone for both your support of my mission and of my gtablet... I will most definitely try out the clemsyn kernel and see what comes of it because then i could roam the entire base.. And as far as hiding the ssid, i really dont think thats warranted as the people in my unit or anyone else in the area are not the type of people that would know how to get around what simple security i have in place.... They arent the type of people that you would encounter on this forum, or any tech forum for that matter.... but thanks for your concern ill keep it monitored and if i dont have the warm and fuzzy i will put more security in place, but at this point its just an inconvenience.....

This may cause some problems. Android some some well documented issues with non-broadcast SSIDs. It may work, it may not. It may work today, but not connect again tomorrow.
You'll need to test different configurations (if you even can hide the SSID) and see what works. But you may NEED to broadcast for the Tab to connect (again).
Also, from a security stand point, hiding the SSID adds nothing, really. Restrict access to the MAC address and you'll be fine. Use WPA2 if at all possible.
And I'll add to the thanks for serving. You are a true American hero.
lol my first thanks lol you welcome man, i agree hiding your ssid does nothing as far as i know connectify does not work unless password protected and the default method is wpa2, even with the usual method of wpa hacking, macc address filtering should cover you so your good and thanks for tour service man
Jbro,
Thanx so much for starting this thread. I've been "there" and am going back to the same place and forgot that they use pppoe there! And I agree, you don't want to deal with the response from them when you tell them what you're doing.
It sucks bad enough standing in the line in the first place.
Have they improved connection speeds? It used to be steady but nothing to write home about. Also, can you a wifi signal base wide now?

ya, it seems motorola modified settings.apk
I can't start the Tethering function neither using barnacle or 3G Mobile Hotspot

Yes, I know about that. just wondering if we can enable the one that's built into Android...
Would you happen to know how to re-enable it?
I'm thinking it's a setting in /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/ but I don't know what line to add to the database.
I've searched the whole Android Developers Guide but couldn't find anything...

Hey
I want to use WiFi to transfer files from one Android phone to another Android phone. The only way to do this is thru a Adhoc connection (without a router). Is there a app that allows me to do this?
Thanks
I dont think so
Please add me on twitter. Just search for AndroidPhoneOS
Don't forget its Android, anything is possible, just need to find out a way.
Isn't bluetooth sufficient? Some apps allow you to view the other phone's files.
Enable wifi tethering on one phone and connect the other phone. Then use FTP or something to transfer files.
I don't have an extra phone to try this, but it should work.
I believe this is what you are after:

A 100MB file took about 50 minutes. WiFi would have allowed it to go much faster.

No. Hoccer works like a cloud so you need a internet connection.
It works !!!
I'm using "Wireless Tether for Root Users" , "DroidFTP PRO" and "ANDFTP".
The transfer via adhoc works perfect !!!
You can try wifi cast! I search for it in the market but i cannot find it anymore! So i have oploaded it! Its the lite version so it should be no problem! @mods: otherwise please delete the link! THX!

I am using a program called ZAPYA from playstore (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dewmobile.kuaiya). It is exactly what you want. You can transfer at lightning speed.. even full movies in few seconds without need for routers...Create a group from one mobile and Search & Join the group from other mobile/Tablet. It will do all other things for you. Very simple to connect and transfer files. We use this will all our devices.

Use WiFi-Direct or SuperBeam(2.3.3+).
By the way, I'm looking for a tool to send/receive file between two android devices over internet( not on a same network) in real time(without using wifi), just as yahoo messenger does. Any standalone app(P2P) ?

Did you try searching for the stock WiFi Hotspot app that came on the Sensation (at least for tmobile)? I'd search for that.

i think he has the same issue as me, currently my phone is stock rooted, when doing wifi tether, the browser from the connected device takes you to the upsell page from T-Mobile. i have tried all the apps in the play store and still get the same message. anybody knows of an App that works well with stock ROM?

You have to modify a DB file on your device to get any tethering app to work.
Here are instructions from another thread in this QA forum:
yakman66 said:
I have the T-mobile $30 unlimited prepaid plan and I ran into the tethering block after getting my Nexus 5.
I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.
I hope this helps.

you need an SQL editor, like SQL lite.
The stock tethering is working fine after I rooted however I am worried T-Mobile will find out I am tethering sooner or later. I would rather use this app to tether
I solved with this app: WiFi Tether Router
on Google Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
the developer has done a compatible update
I contacted the developer via email and he told me after a few hours
the developer advised me to select these settings
Interface wlan0
Method 0 - Auto
works also with
Interface wlan0
Method 2

I am interested to know if anyone has gotten the original app in this thread, the Wifi Tether for Root users working with the Nexus 5.
Unlike the other posters, I am interested in this app because it enables you to spoof the MAC address, which I am interested in for making a streetpass relay point for my 3DS, so the alternative app suggested is not a viable alternative for me.
Any ideas how I can get this working on my Nexus 5? It is rooted, stock ROM, and have installed Busybox.
I would try mailing the Dev of the paid app. The screenshots of the options and the description of the methods available look similar to those in the free branch, and if the code is similar it may be simple to add the feature.
