I would like to install CM7 from http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...f0000dangerous-test-releasecolor/#entry148754
But to restore back to Froyo, it says to use ODIN to do a restore with the re-partition option. I thought I read that the re-part option would brick a SGH-I896.
Is this correct? or am I just imagining it.
In other words, does the repartition option work properly on Rogers SGH-I896?
Thanks for any answers you guys give.
You want to run an experimental beta ROM for an i897 phone on your i896? Trying to find the fastest way to brick your phone?

I do not believe it will brick the phone. The board is an I897 with slight revisions. I was just wondering about the method used to go back to froyo. I am not a complete noob and am not worried about bricking to install the rom. Just going back.
But I do appreciate your input.
DO NOT USE PIT / RE- PARTITION ( the p in PIT is for partition )
i did that and on reboot had an error
E: cant mount dev/dbdata...
was STUCK. only option was to do ONE CLICK ODIN, even after flashing EVERY AVAILABLE rogers stock image, on the net and my own, I CANNOT GET RID OF ATT bootscreen without the cheap hack of replaceing the ATT image with the origninal (still named ATT boot).
the CM7 is still not ready, you will just be going back to what you have now,
WAIT for it to be ready.
Everything I've read on CM7 up to this point is that it is not yet ready for use other than for developers trying to fix its remaining bugs. A number of threads opened up on it over the past week have been almost immediately closed because of the potential to mislead people to try it and end up with bricked phones.
I flashed there and back with no problem. I did not use the re-partition option to install.
Well answered

Thats what I was afraid of, I didn't want to be stuck with att junk on the phone.
Guess i'll wait a little more, sad to say I can only play with gingerbready on by HTC Dream . for now anyways.
Thanks for the answer
Cm7 is largely stable with some bugs. If you do not read the known issues some funky stuff will happen. Speaking from experience ; ) it is everything the hype says it is. Running since the morning. My one concern is battery but I need to let it cycle a couple of times.
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium App
Been running CM7 since late January, and did some of the early dev work on porting it to the Captivate. I have an i896. Trust me, it won't brick it.
To op, there will never be a non-one click revert. CM7 changes the setup of the mtd blocks (basically the nand where the rom is installed), meaning you MUST repartition to go back to a Samsung rom. However, none of the Rogers images contain all of the rom, meaning if you repartition, you will be missing parts of the rom, and will just bootloop/be stuck in recovery.
Tl;dr: If you flash it, and want to revert, you must use one-click, and that won't change, even when it's at "stable".

Best advice, straight from the source. And OP, as was said before, make sure you know what the known issues are. The CM7 thread has a lot of complaints about issues that were already noted and known. If you can live with those, jump in!
Hi, I have a motorola milestone xt720.
I recently flashed dext3r's Motoblur on it and it is running fine but it has many bugs and I just want to return to froyo.. Which is my problem.
There are a few problems I am running into
-RSD Lite 4.9 doesn't recognize my phone
-Booting in recovery mode doesn't work (It shows a triangle with yellow exclamation with a phone laying down next to it)
I just can't find a guide that solves my problem, if any one could PLEASE help it would be awesome, i'm sick of the bugs on MOTOBLUR (which by the way was downloaded for XT720)

So to solve the rsdlite thing, make sure you have USB debugging on and then it should recognize your phone.
For the recovery issue, what happens after your triangle goes away? How many options do you have? If it is only 4 then you are in stock recovery and not a custom recovery like Androidiani or Mioze's. Both these and their guides are on this General forum.
Now for the "stock" ROM part. Look in the Development threads. There are plenty of options in there from CM6/7, Hellmonger's ROM,...gotta look though. When you say return to froyo, it is cryptic bc aside from Korean, there is no froyo to return too. They are all custom.

-Yes the phone is in debugging mode and it doesn't recognize my phone.
-The triangle doesn't go away, it stays there until i take out the battery again
-I will try those mods but knowing my luck they won't work.. I will use dext3r's froyo is what I mean to return to froyo, go through the whole process of flashing it to my phone again
Thanks for the reply
Put on Mio's CM6 RC3. Best ROM created yet for the XT720 in my opinion, really good stuff.
Definitely don't bother with Dexter's stuff at this point, what with all the amazing ROMs that have been created since Feb of 2010.
I will try that! IF I can get this to work without bricking my phone or anything :'(.
I've about given up on this phone, it has SO many problems and it's just slow in regards to processor speed and internet, 4G is out..
Don't give up on it yet. In the last 4 months we have gotten 4 really incredible ROMs. If you can boot up fully, install Mioze's recovery (I was mistaken before, it is in the Dev threads not General). The install CM6 or Hellmongers and never look back.
Most of us got this phone with a fresh 2.1. Now look what we have, thanks to some very talented people.
Good luck. Bedtime for now.
Edit: Aside from screwing with the bootloader, it is almost impossible to actually "brick" your phone. Get it to be unresponsive, yes. You can flash back to stock sbf and redo everything, but bricking is a tough thing to do.
You can overclock your CPU with Milestone Overclock from the market. Good starting point is 1000/66. Now I am going to bed.
Yeah it can boot fine, I can send messages and everything, it just has numerous bugs.
My god I figured it out....
I had to reinstall the Moto USB Driver because I completely forgot that I had to swipe my computer about a month ago and it uninstalled!
Much stress and anger lifted off of my shoulder !!!!!!!!! I can get it from here!

Lol, yeah that is so true. I remember how scared I was when I first flashed dexters the very first time. New to ubuntu, new to android yipe. Its actually pretty close to impossible to brick a phone unless you tamper with bootloaders like you mentioned.
i tried doing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249
and i failed, i got the first part down and i saw the red fish which is the devs logo. then the second part with the kernelKF1.tar file i guess i screwed up, because on reboot it would loop, it would go to at&t screen then it would show my screen really screwed up, with a whole bunch of colors and what not like as if it was tripping on acid haha. anyways now when i turn on my phone it shows a logo of a phone, a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to a computer. I do not want to lose all my apps and what not, i mean i doooo have 27 hours on my final fantasy 7 lol. so please guys what do i do to bring my phone back to life so i can try to root and flash a ROM correctly this time.
Does it say something about firmware upgrade failure, use recovery mode?
Yep. It's a soft brick so you can recovery it!
First: You must flash AT&T Gingerbread Bootloader from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129821. (You must go to download mode by Vol Up + Vol Down + USB Plug or use a jig (google: Jig Captivate)
Then: Flash your kernelKF1.tar again (Download Mode) or Another kernel you like for KF1! (I prefer you flash this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127322)
That's all!
-how do i access recovery mode? says nothing about an update failure.
-that's great news! does it matter that i was on 2.1 eclair first? back in the day i rooted my phone on the stock eclair and i beliiiiiieve did a lagfix as well, but no custom ROMS or anything like that.
-I use odin to flash both the bootloader/kernel correct? on odin i just have to wait for it to says "connected" in that little chatbox right? one of the box's all the way to the top isn't supposed to say anything until its passes right?
sorry for all the real dumb and seemingly obvious questions. But i want to make sure i know what i am doing so i can always do it correctly. thanks for all your help and quick replys guys i really appreciate it!

1. Use combo keys: Vol Up + Vol Down + Power to access Recovery. If you are on AT&T Gingerbread Bootloader, you are good to go!.
2. You must disable lagfix before flash any rom. You can go stock and reflash it but i think you must get KF1 work to backup your game process!
3. If you flash KF1 with bootloader, you needn't to reflash it again. Just reflash kernel and you are unbrick. (If you are on AT&T Gingerbread Bootloader, on screen PC -- /!\ -- Phone, you can run ODIN and reflash kernel KF1. No need to go to Download Mode to flash kernel. If you can't flash from ODIN (try some time, change USB port, change PC, and reinstall Windows), you must reflash AT&T bootloader.
Good luck!
at&T gingerbread bootloader is a program like odin? or does it literally mean the booting of a gingerbread device? im so confuuuuused.
So i have to flash a stock 2.1 eclair? then do the kf1 file to get to 2.3.3 gb?

its questions like these that make people say 'read, read, read, read, then read some more'
the answer is literally everywhere in these forums......
i just made it so much worse, i used the gb bootloaders as well as used that ROM by using the kernel and a previous file in odin. i can still go to download/recovery, and if i just power on the phone it will loop at the at&t screen
when i get to recovery, the vol bottoms dont let me select anything. so my only option is to keep rebooting. i cant apply update from sd; even though im sure its because im doing it wrong!! someone please help i need this phone for the upcoming work week didnt think it would take 4 days to figure out.
Can Someone Please Please tell me step by step what i should do, i understand how to work the programs i just dont know the order in which to do them in. what am i to do? remember i was initially on 2.1 eclair with a voodoo lagfix, yet, i dont know what i am on know, i tried flashing ROMS as well as gb bootloaders.
so your volume buttons are broken?
just boot into download mode, flash back to stock with ODIN or Heimdall, whichever is easier for you to use, then leave your phone the fk alone, because you are compounding the problems by panicking.
its obvious that you havent truly understood what you have been flashing on your phone, and you are about to wind up with a pretty brick that will need to get sent to jtag/unbrickable mod.....
until you understand and comprehend what you are doing, leave it the hell alone, this isnt childs play here

OK! So i finally got the phone up and running late late last night. its on firmware 2.3.3 on build: cognition v2
kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
its definitely GB; thats something obvious. yet, i cant shake the feeling that it still feels slow. i ran quandrant and its a shy 1040. I know, I know, quadrant scores dont mean anything, but still.... i would think it would be in atleast the 1300+ especially with the lagfix from cognition5.

But in all seriousness, I think were all a little surprised to see that you have a working phone and even more so one with a custom rom. You need to read up on here before you start messing with things again or your going wind up with a brick.

thaaaanks for the life lesson; but I wouldnt be able to sit here and tell you im Running a custom ROM unless i did do my research. The time differences between my posts was me literally finding and reading countless articles. I'm asking questions not figuring out fallacys..
Don't be so defensive, they weren't talking down to you and belittling, just making sure you don't end up in a worse situation. Looking out for your best interest.
I know that....If my posts were that bad at least show me the simple corrections.I know the value of my phone, ill deal with it if it comes to that and even then nothing has happened since. Regardless, I got out of the soft brick and now I'm on DG's 2.3.3.
Hello all,
I've been lurking the XDA forums for a couple months now. I had a couple posts in the past referring to my phone and my girlfriends phone and was looking for help mainly with hers at the time... Hers is fixed... Perfectly even, despite her phone being a total piece of garbage (an LG Optimus.... *barf*).
I have a SGH-T959V.
I have read the 10 commandments.
I KNOW my phone is NOT a Vibrant OR an i900.
I have read the noob guides.
I have become completely confused.
Here's my details:
I have running the stock GB that I installed with Kies Mini some time ago.
Phone Data:
Firmware Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: T959VUVKJ6
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKJ6-CL694130
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I rooted my phone with one of the one-click apps after the stock GB update so that I was at least able to overclock it and get rid of the T-Mobile bloatware, etc.
I notice that my phone reboots entirely on it's own completely randomly, has random application hangs, all the bad icky stuff that sucks... (right????)
Anyways, I've looked at some of the Custom ROMs available and I'd like to check out some of them, but I'll be quite honest, I've read the instructions for how to do it, but I'm getting extremely confused as the current instructions seem rather daunting.... It's like information overload...
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not some kid that really doesn't know what he's doing... I'm 33 and work in IT for The Nielsen Group... so I kinda know what the heck I'm doing MOST of the time. This is something I'm unfamiliar with and am being EXTREMELY cautious about because i don't want to brick my phone....
Question time!:
1. Is there a COMPLETELY SIMPLE step-by-step process/Video Demonstration for the CORRECT method of how to put a custom rom on the SGH-T959V?
2. Does it matter that I ALREADY rooted my phone in respect to me loading a custom rom? (ie. is my already rooted phone going to have issues loading a different rom?)
3. I would like to stay with a GB based rom unless there is absolute NEED to use a Froyo based Rom - Or is this a non-point when using custom roms?
4. If i want to load a custom rom to my phone, do I need to use a specific loader? (Like, does Odin work for everything??? Loading roms and unbricking your phone? Or do I have to have different loaders for the specific roms that I want to load and try out????)
5. Please don't jump down my throat with the "read the guide" responses... I HAVE been... really. As many as I've found... and every time I read a new one, rather than feeling like I'm coming out of the darkness of knowledge and into the light of understanding the correct process for how to do this, I feel like I'm being cast deeper down the confusion pit.
Would someone KINDLY please help me. Really... I don't want to screw up this thing... I'm not worried about the warranty. From what I've read, these things are mostly fixable unless it's an actual hardware issue or if it's totally fried. I just want to do it once, do it right, move on to my next project.... Dig?
First and foremost, we keep the most updated information in the wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G
We've been updating it a lot lately so you're better off checking there. I'm sure you'll wanna bookmark it since you know what you're doing already.
1) Specifically you'll want to look at this section:http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Installing_a_ROM
2) If you're using Odin/Heimdall you won't need to be rooted since this bypasses the phone's OS and flashes firmware directly to the phone which may or may not be pre-rooted. The only Odin 2.3.6 KJ6 rom that's out right now does NOT come with root though, it's just the stock version you're already running.
3) For our phone you're either going to use Odin/Heimdall (learn Heimdall, it's much more useful) and CWM Recovery. Most roms available right now are for CWM.
Here's the list of custom GB roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G_ROMs
4) Honestly the forums are too cluttered and as I stated above, knowledgeable senior members are the ones who update the wiki, so that'll be your most useful resource.
If you already have some experience with computers I'll gladly help you, you're already asking the right questions.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

When I last played with my phone, I had used Odin on Windows... I have replaced Windows with Linux... I have installed Heimdall and did an initial test. So it is working.
My question is: Is Heimdall a valid replacement for Odin? In other words, I am wanting to use your guide, but it only refers to Odin. Can I go through those steps replacing Odin with Hamdall?
Yes it should work fine. The csc files for kc1 should be extracted over the pda files though

FBis251,
Thank you so much for the quick reply! I had seen it immediately after you responded, but was driving home from work and went right to bed. I'm back at the office now for the evening and perhaps may have some time to look into these tonight... I don't know as of right now.
If you are serious about the offer of some assistance, I would be more than open to it if I honestly felt it was needed. I am MORE than experiences with computers, i'm a full on uber-geek (just not with smartphones...... yet....), so VNC, etc would not be an issue.
I will most certainly get back to you about this in the next few days (perhaps even tonight). Let me see how my work load looks this evening and I will update the thread later.
Thank you again so much!
I'm usually in #teamnerd on freenode if you do IRC.
It doesn't take much to confuse me these days...
Moved my issue into a new question in the Q&A forum...
Hey, just an FYI (even tho I'm sure that ultimately you don't really care - just being realistic, not a douche... ), I haven't had a single moment to look into this beyond briefly skimming the Wiki's you linked up for me. (thanks for that one). I've had a butt-load of server issues at work that have taken a lot of my time. I'm HOPING to be able to look into some of this stuff a little deeper tonight (god willing)....
I will drop a note if I have issues....
Thanks again!
Hey everyone.
Im generally pretty savvy with androids. I rooted and S-offed my HTC Desire, I had a nexus S for a bit until it got ran over... Now im stuck with this Galaxy S 4G, which has been nothing but headaches because for some reason... this thing is impossible to root to me. Ive tried Hemidall, Super1clicks, Odin etc..
Can someone please just point me in the direction of rooting this POS? Im hoping that once its rooted and running stock, I wont hate this thing as much... because so far, Its a horrible purchase.
I just need someone to post a link to where I need to be. Ive searched.. and im absolutely lost. Even the Rootz wiki was useless to me.
Thanks.

Read that then understand what bhundven means by DONT FLASH BOOTLOADERS!!
You can use the heimdall one clicks he created to get root access and then flash any rom that DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS INCLUDED. That means do not use gremlin remover period. Once you get rooted make a backup and keep it stored in as many places as possible. If you flash the ics variants you will have to use the stock kj6 HOC and then need to flash the HOC for antonx kernel to get root back. At that point you can flash your nandroid or whatever rom you want. AGAIN AS LONG AS IT DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS included.

Sure, here you are!

Good luck sir, you have the patience of a saint and the drive of a tiger!
OK let's be honest you gave up kinda quick.......
The forum that eollie linked you to was a forum talking about the phone that you bought, which is an apparent offshoot of the t-959v and according to what Masonite found out, "our" roms work on the t-959w but you cannot flash the bootloaders.
Here is the one click link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498 just boot into download mode and use this but absolutely don't flash bootloaders and it should be OK, no promises.
Eollie was right for linking you there, all the info you needed about your model phone was on that forum, that one click is in the dev sticky which everybody should read.
There has been a flood of people not researching a little bit first before posting and that's why people flamed you but you should not give up, its a good phone and our devs are dedicated and have put in a lot of time on this model, you should be happy your phone can even support all the great roms that are available.
I'm not being mean but seriously, come on, all the info is there, no need to get mad.

Edit: or Google search how to use heimdall if your confused, I learn off a damn YouTube video..........
Our devs didn't create heimdall and don't support it but it is a great program and the dev has to build the individual one click for the phone, we should be happy to have it that easily available.

You'll need to flash one of the back to stock files that you got linked to in that thread which will put you on stock GB with no root. DO NOT FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS. You'll very likely brick if you do.
After this download the AntonX kernel from bhundven's one click thread and flash that. That will give you a custom kernel with CWM built in and root.
Needless to say, this is all for the SGH-T959V which theoretically should work on the SGH-T959W. As you'll read any disclaimer on this forum, you're resposible for anything you flash and the damage that may occur to your device.
Thanks for that fb I forgot a few steps if he wants to be on mtd roms, I assumed he could read from that point............ but your right for knowing better

Thank you very much, and I'm sorry for getting angry. I've had this phone for almost 4 months now, and haven't been able to do anything with it. Quite frustrating.
So, I currently have the Tmobile ROM on my phone, so I'm halfway there it appears!
I'm going to download the other ROM as soon as I get home.
Thanks so much! Next up.. Learning to flash with Odin, and not ROM manager.
It seemed like everything I tried wasn't working with 2.3.6. Superoneclick etc.
I was waiting for a new exploit, but it never came. I tried YouTube tutorials, text directions.. Everything would fail, or give me "read only" errors. I feared bricking, so I stopped.. But I searched the forum and came across the thread he linked me to, but it said no bootloaders, and all the ones I saw had bootloaders. Wasn't until tonight that I noticed it's a 2 part flash process, with the second being the bootloaders.
I think I started this thread at 3am.
Lesson learned.
In heimdall, you can click a little box that says "flash bootloaders" to toggle flashing them on and off! .... or maybe it was odin? I can't remember... been a while since I used them!
After being away for the weekend, I came home, and BAM... fully rooted. Amazing! and FINALLY!!!
Thanks everyone for your help...
I just have another issue.
I wanna flash this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
It says its CWM.. but there is a huge disclaimer that we shouldn't use ROM Manager on the development page, which is a bit confusing. Since this ROM isnt Odin flashable... what do i do?
Thanks again.
So I was confused about this when I first started. I'm not at my computer but I can help. In order to flash Roms via cmw you have to turn off your phone hold both volume rockers on the phone then hold the power button and hold till you get into cwm recovery. That will get you into cmw recovery mode. Then wipe data factory rest, from there go back to the main menu and select the install zip from sd card and find the zip file you want to flash and select it and install. Should be good to go.
